Irani Cup drop prompted my decision – Ganguly

Stop speculating about my future – Kumble
  • Anil Kumble, India’s Test captain, has asked the media to stop speculating whether he will follow Sourav Ganguly’s lead and retire at the end of the series. “I’ll let you know when my last series is. I’m someone who’ll take the call on that,” he said. “I’m not someone who’d like to announce before. I’d like to take things as they come. Let’s stop all this for now and let the players decide when they need to go.”
  • Kumble, who turns 38 later this month, however said that this will be his last Test in his hometown. “I don’t know when the next one [here] is. I don’t want to look that far ahead. I’ll take one series at a time.” The earliest Bangalore will get to host another Test is during the series against Sri Lanka towards the end of 2009.

A day after announcing his retirement from international cricket, Sourav Ganguly said the decision came at the right moment. “I just felt it was time for me to go,” Ganguly said on the eve of the first Test against Australia in Bangalore.Ganguly said he had not rushed into the decision and had arrived at it after he was ignored for the Irani Cup. “Obviously I can’t deny the fact that I was disappointed after the Irani Cup selection. To be honest, I felt I’d two outstanding years except the Sri Lanka series,” Ganguly said. For the record, Ganguly has scored 1667 in 21 matches at 45.05 in the last two years. Still he undercut the sense of sadness with wit.Asked as to why he was the most scrutinised among the Fab Five, Ganguly smiled and replied, “Probably people didn’t like my face.”On Tuesday, after briefing the media, Ganguly made the surprise announcement to call it a day. He said he didn’t want the attention focused on him since the series was the priority. “I didn’t want to make much of a fuss and that’s why I announced it at the end of the press meet because the series is more important,” Ganguly said.Asked if there was a sense of relief now, Ganguly said, “The pressure of doing well will always be there and that probably brings the best out of everyone. Whether it’s a relief or not, all I can say is I’ve not been sad.”Ganguly also rubbished all the rumours about him intending to stick around for a couple more years. “I’ve not said anywhere that I wanted to play for two years. It was picked from an interview a year ago after I played against Pakistan,” Ganguly said.Well aware of the fact that a lot speculation will surface about his decision, Ganguly said he wasn’t bothered about it. “I know what is the right thing and you will find out in due course,” he said.Picking his debut, at Lord’s in 1996, as the best moment of his career, Ganguly said if there were any unfulfilled expectations, it was the India’s loss in the 2003 World Cup final.

Tottenham Hotspur: Lilywhites open Dodo negotiations

Tottenham Hotspur are in negotiations with Shakhtar Donetsk right-back Domilson Cordeiro dos Santos, known as Dodo [International Football via TEAMtalk].

The Lowdown: Tottenham look to deal with right-back inconsistencies

Facing the challenge of rejuvenating an underperforming group of players going into 2021/22, Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo will no doubt be keen to add new faces to his recently inherited roster.

Right-back has become a particular area of concern in North London in recent times, with inconsistencies within Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier’s performances potentially putting them in the firing line to be moved on this summer.

On a more positive note, they could well have identified a replacement for one of the duo from the Ukrainian top-flight, following recent reports.

The Latest: Tottenham Hotspur remain in talks with Dodo despite rejected bid

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly already failed in an opening bid to land Brazilian full-back Dodo, which is said to have totalled around £17 million [TEAMtalk].

Despite this, the deal is mooted to still be on the table, with both clubs still firmly locked in talks for the 5 foot 5 ace.

Bayern Munich are also believed to have had a bid of around £22 million turned down for his services in the not-too-distant past.

The Verdict: Dodo would be an exciting right-back reinforcement in North London

Needing fresh ideas in their quest to challenge for trophies in the forthcoming campaign, Dodo would provide a sense of intrigue and excitement to the Spurs support.

In 2020/21, he excelled for his current employers, notching a very impressive nine goal contributions in 34 appearances; two goals and seven assists [Transfermarkt].

His speed and ability to find targets in the box either through whipped crosses or cutbacks would fit into Nuno’s style of football, whilst his rate of 4.5 progressive carries (dribbles) per fixture over the last year shows he is a forward-thinking player who will get fans off their seats [FB Ref].

If Spurs are to replace one of Doherty or Aurier, Dodo could well be a viable candidate to add speed and attacking potency down the flank.

In other news, Spurs are interested in a La Liga ace.

Leeds suffer blow over Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher

Leeds United have suffered a transfer blow over Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher amid speculation linking him with a move to Crystal Palace.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days had suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side were one of the clubs interested in landing the 21-year-old on a season-long loan, with The Athletic’s Phil Hay delivering an update on where he ranked among their targets.

Taking to Twitter, he said: “Bielsa is very keen on him. Likes his attributes and skill set.”

He then added: “Leeds do prefer to have permanent options and they would try for one but like with Ben White, they’re not always possible. Palace battling very hard for Gallagher too. He’s the midfielder they’ve been targeting.”

But now, TEAMtalk claim that the midfielder has opted to join fellow Premier League side Palace instead on a season-long loan, and thus remaining in the capital.

90min have since added that Gallagher actually underwent a medical at Thorp Arch, and that he had been on the verge of joining the Whites. They said: “That change of heart has left a sour taste in the mouth for the Whites, who believed they had got their man. Gallagher had visited the Leeds training ground, agreed personal terms and even undergone a medical with the Yorkshire club.”

Bielsa will be gutted

Given Hay’s claim that “Bielsa is very keen on him”, missing out on Gallagher to another Premier League side is sure to leave Bielsa gutted.

Young, English and with the kind of energy and attitude that would have made him a dream for the Leeds boss, the Chelsea ace seems to have everything in his locker that Bielsa would have wanted.

During his loan spell at Swansea, Sky Sports pundit Keith Andrews raved about the midfielder’s “unbelievable” energy, and insisted that while he does his bit off the ball, he could also be a threat going forward too.

He said: “The one thing he has got is a fantastic engine, much like Lee Bowyer or Frank Lampard – it’s amazing, the resemblances between those two in their younger years particularly. But for me, he’s a classic No 8; he has an unbelievable energy, he does the ugly side of the game, but you have to let him off the leash and let him get forward.”

Despite not making his mark on the first team at Stamford Bridge, Gallagher has received high praise wherever he’s been, with former Charlton manager Lee Bowyer even calling the £13.5m-rated dynamo a “jewel” who was “impossible to replace.”

Given that Leeds finished well above Palace last season in the Premier League, and the fact they’ve got a proven manager in Bielsa, there no doubt would have been hope and even optimism that they could convince Gallagher to join up at Elland Road.

Instead, the Chelsea man has opted to stay put closer to home, and it’s an update that will leave Bielsa gutted. With Hay claiming that Gallagher was the man they were targeting to bolster that midfield position, this comes as a major setback for the Whites.

Meanwhile, Leeds United have made an exciting transfer breakthrough…

Western Province 'B' seize the initiative on day one in Constantia

The home team seized the initiative on the opening day of the UCB Bowl match at the picturesque Burt Oval in Constantia

Peter le Grange25-Oct-2002The home team seized the initiative on the opening day of the UCB Bowl match at the picturesque Burt Oval in Constantia. After winning the toss, Western Province struggled at first but some splendid batting from Derrin Bassage and skipper Jonno McLean left the hosts in a comfortable position at stumps.Under overcast skies, Andrew Pringle in particular worked up some disconcerting pace. Rashaad Magiet was flummoxed playing back in the 5th over, and Andrew Puttick should have been caught off the next ball. Puttick and Bassage weathered the immediate crisis, but were far from home and dry when Puttick was bowled by first change seamer Ryan Shutte. However, Bassage and McLean turned the innings around with a magnificent 170-run partnership, made almost at even time. Their task was made easier with the pitch flattening out as the cloud cover disappeared.Bassage reached his century shortly before tea, but the left hander was dismissed immediately afterwards looking for the big shot. McLean went to tea on 99, but showed no nerves as he went to his hundred soon after the break. WP lost some cheap wickets as the compulsory declaration after 100 overs loomed closer, but must have been more than happy to pass 300. They earned 4.18 bonus points for batting to Border’s two for bowling.Left ten overs to bat, the visitors lost Bevan Bennett when he misjudged a Rory Kleinveldt deliver which came back just enough to win the lbw decision. Fellow opener Michael Smith and nightwatchman Siyabulela Nelani saw them through to the close with no further alarms, Border ending the day still 304 behind.

Rangers dealt Salih Ozcan transfer blow

According to Kicker (via Glasgow Live), Glasgow Rangers transfer target Salih Ozcan has agreed a new contract in principle with current club FC Koln.

The Lowdown: Rangers eye Ozcan

The Gers have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old midfielder this summer.

As it stands, the Germany under-21 international’s contract is set to run out at the end of this month (Transfermarkt), but it seems that there has been an update in that regard.

The Latest: Ozcan set to sign new contract at Koln

As per Kicker (via Glasgow Live), Ozcan is closing in on a new contract at the German club.

He has agreed a deal in principle, with the influence of new Koln manager Steffen Baumgart said to be an important factor in the midfielder’s decision to stay put.

The Verdict: Disappointment

You can certainly see why the Gers were in pursuit of Ozcan this summer. A 23-year-old with 64 Bundesliga appearances to his name, he started both the semi-final and the final of the European Under-21 Championships this summer as Germany won the trophy.

Valued at £3.15m by Transfermarkt, the Gers would have been able to secure a bargain if they could have captured his services on a free transfer. It appears that he is set to remain in his home nation, though, which means that Ross Wilson and co will have to go back to the drawing board in the search for midfield reinforcements.

In other news, Rangers are set to ramp up their interest in this 27-year-old.

Kenya defeat Sri Lanka A in Six Nations final

Kenya and Sri Lanka A, after a washed out last round between the same two teams, played in the final of the ICC Six Nations Challenge in Windhoek withKenya eventually coming out on top with a three wicket win

Keith Lane14-Apr-2002Kenya and Sri Lanka A, after a washed out last round between the same two teams, played in the final of the ICC Six Nations Challenge in Windhoek withKenya eventually coming out on top with a three wicket win.Asked to bat first, Sri Lanka started well with Jehan Mubarak continuing his late-tournament form, scoring 82 before being stumped. At the other end none of the Sri Lankan batsmen could consolidate and wickets fell at regular intervals.Chinthaka Jayasinghe (28) and Thilan Samaraweera (20) had a short flourish in the middle of the innings allowing the Sri Lankans to finish on 211 having been bowled out in 49 overs.Maurice Odumbe (2/30 in seven overs) was the early wicket taker but it was left to Steve Tikolo to race through the lower order taking 4/29 in his nine overs. With a good pitch to bat on, the Sri Lankan total always looked about 40 runs short, and early runs from all the top order batsmen made it even harder to defend. David Obuya (41), Tikolo (39) and Kennedy Otieno (38) laid the foundation for the middle and lower order to take them to victory in the 44th over.Akalanka Ganegama and Rangana Herath had limited success with the ball, bothtaking two wickets apiece.Zimbabwe A finished third in the tournament followed by Namibia, who were the surprise of the tournament beating the more-fancied Kenyans in round three. A reverse of some very close last-over results for the hosts could have seen them contest the final.Canada and Netherlands propped up the bottom end of the table, but gained valuable experience ahead of next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
