Essex leapfrogged Gloucestershire into second place in the Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B with a six-wicket win at Bristol. The home side could muster only 184 for 8 on a slow pitch, despite an unbeaten 70 from James Franklin, as Chris Wright (3 for 43), Ryan ten Doeschate (2 for 30) and David Masters (2 for 26) maintained a tight line and length. Essex were given a good start in reply by Ravi Bopara (45) and Mark Pettini (37), before Grant Flower (45) and Matthew Walker (32) did their bit to clinch victory with an over to spare. It was dour fare for the crowd, but a precious result for the Eagles, who now stand a chance of reaching the semi-finals as at least the best second-placed team in the three groups. The Gladiators were unable to gain much momentum, having been put in to bat, after an opening stand of 46 in eight overs between Alex Gidman (20) and Will Porterfield (27).The only other partnership of note was between Franklin and Steve Snell (32) for the fifth wicket after a collapse to 65 for 4. Franklin came in at the fall of the first wicket when Gidman was dismissed in the eighth over and had to battle hard throughout, reaching his half-century in the 37th over, having faced 77 balls and hit only two fours. Gloucestershire could hit only eight fours and one six, lofted straight by Franklin in the final over of the innings off Tony Palladino.Essex timed their run chase well on a night of few batting thrills. Bopara coped with the conditions better than most and was clearly aggrieved to be given out caught behind off David Payne having faced 42 balls and hit seven fours. Pettini was content to push ones and twos for the majority of his 69-ball innings, which ended when he was yorked by Gidman’s first delivery of the match with the total on 92.That was in the 23rd over and Gloucestershire still had a glimmer of hope. But Flower had sensibly taken time to gauge the pace of the wicket and Walker added some vibrancy to the innings at just the right time. The Gladiators bowlers did not enjoy much luck, particularly Steve Kirby, whose first six overs cost only 14 runs. But the partnership of 74 between Flower and Walker proved all-important. Flower was caught behind attempting to pull Jon Lewis and Walker then fell to a slip catch, but by the fall of the fourth wicket only 15 runs were needed and Essex eased home.

Anderson angry over World Twenty20 snub

England fast bowler James Anderson has revealed his anger at being left out of his country’s ICC World Twenty20 winning squad, and thinks being rested for the tour of Bangladesh that preceded the tournament was part of the problem. Anderson was part of the 15-member squad for the Caribbean but was benched for all games.”I suppose you have to take your hat off to the selectors, don’t you?” he told the . “But it did take the wind out of my sails and I felt angry about being rested, because I felt that might have had something to do with it. I thought if I had gone there and gone to Abu Dhabi [for the warm-up mini-tour] it might have been different.”Not being picked during the World T20 has forced Anderson to re-evaluate where he stands in England’s thinking. “I now have to work my way back into the team and unless they play only one spinner I can’t see me starting,” he said. “I admit it has changed my thoughts on where I am in the side.”During the South Africa tour I felt I was becoming a key part of the team and now I don’t feel like that. That said, I believe that if I had played in the World Twenty20 we would have still won. My self-belief remains intact.”He also feels the upcoming one-day series against Australia isn’t necessary and believes the England players would be better served by playing country cricket. “I don’t think there is a need for the ODIs but that is what the ECB wanted to do. For me it would be a perfect time to send the England players back to play for their counties, but it’s out of our hands.”That said, every series against the Aussies is huge and we are very hopeful it will be closer than the series we played after the Ashes last year.”England were demolished 6-1 in that series and Anderson admitted Australia’s uncanny ability to keep producing new players makes it difficult to beat them. “They are a great side who keep bringing out these new players who just slot into the international scene. They keep churning out results, so we know it’s going to be very hard for us.”But any time you play Australia it’s a big deal and we will be treating it like that. We also know if we get a good series win here it will give us extra confidence.”

Andrew Hudson, South Africa’s convener of selectors, has said Makhaya Ntini’s form for Kent in the County Championship was encouraging and that he would be considered for selection along with everyone else when the squads for upcoming series are chosen. Hudson’s comments came closely after Ntini expressed his disappointment at the lack of communication from the selectors since he was dropped from the South African team following a poor home series against England in 2009-10.”There are other players that are also performing well and we have not spoken to them either,” Hudson told . “It’s excellent to see how well Makhaya is doing for Kent in England. He has to keep on playing, keep himself fit and will certainly be considered when we pick the squads for the series’ against Zimbabwe [in September] and Pakistan [in October].”We will take everyone’s performances into account, irrespective of how many games they have played for South Africa.”Hudson was not part of the selection group that axed Ntini following a wicketless Durban Test – his 101st – last year and took over as convener following the sacking of the Mike-Procter led panel. Since then Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Wayne Parnell have emerged as South Africa’s first-choice fast bowlers.Ntini, 32, had said that he was “slightly disappointed that no-one at Cricket South Africa” had told him if he was part of their future plans. He is currently in England where he has taken 24 wickets at an average of 19.75 in four games for Kent, a performance that drew praise from coach Paul Farbrace.

Everton linked with Coutinho move

Given Everton’s spotty run of form in the Premier League, winning just one of their 11 previous league games, the upcoming January transfer window could allow the Merseyside club to strengthen and freshen up their squad to put them in a good shape for the second half of the campaign.

However, it seems as though Everton have been mentioned with a potential move for a player that not only would be a very familiar face to a lot of fans in Merseyside but would also be a player that some fans would not want to see wearing their club’s shirt.

What’s the news?

According to Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Everton are in the frame, alongside fellow Premier League club Newcastle United, for a potential swoop for Barcelona and former Liverpool attacker Philippe Coutinho.

The report claims that the Brazilian is not wanted at Barcelona and that his agent is waiting on the likes of Everton and Newcastle to make a formal approach for Coutinho.

During his time with Liverpool, Coutinho managed to rack up 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 appearances across all competitions before making his mega-money move to Barcelona in a deal worth a reported overall total of £142m in 2018.

With 106 appearances under his belt with the La Liga side, Coutinho’s spell at Barcelona has been widely regarded as a disappointing one, which is presumably why the club are looking to get rid of him despite the huge amount of money they paid for him.

Last month, Coutinho, who is currently picking up a weekly wage of £380k-per-week according to Salary Sport, answered some of the criticism thrown his way during his time at Barcelona after being called “lazy” by the Spanish media, which apparently surprised him.

It’s hard to see many Toffees fans being excited about potentially seeing the former Liverpool man, who has scored three goals and provided two assists in the nine games he’s played against Everton, join Rafa Benitez’s squad.

Given how Benitez previously criticised former Everton midfielder James Rodriguez for not wanting to work hard for the team and preferring “a comfortable life and money more than the competition,” it seems as though Coutinho could be the next version of the Colombian at Goodison Park given the doubts over his work rate in Spain.

Overall, it would be worth Farhad Moshiri not risking any further fury at Everton from the supporters by stepping away from a potential move for the Brazilian and looking elsewhere for potential reinforcements in January.

Shingirai, the younger brother of Zimbabwean vice-captain Hamilton Masakadza, has also been in stellar form.Prosper Utseya has been named captain of the touring side that also included Tatenda Taibu. Sean Ervine, who was one of the rebel group which openly clashed with Zimbabwe Cricket in 2004, and Anthony Ireland, who has also returned to Zimbabwe ahead of the domestic Twenty20 competition, are still restricted by contracts with teams overseas.Zimbabwe will play one Twenty20 and five ODIs against West Indies ahead of the ICC World Twenty20, which begins in late April.Squad: Prosper Utseya (capt), Brendan Taylor, Tatenda Taibu, Hamilton Masakadza, Ray Price, Graeme Cremer, Charles Coventry, Vusi Sibanda, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Greg Lamb, Elton Chigumbura, Shingirai Masakadza, Timycen Maruma, Chris Mpofu, Kyle Jarvis.

Tottenham transfer news on Sayers

An insider at Tottenham Hotspur has now dropped some insight on their new signing Charlie Sayers.

The Lowdown: Sayers signs

As confirmed on Tuesday afternoon on the official website of the Spurs faithful, Sayers has now joined the Academy from Southend United on a scholarship programme.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The North London club were reportedly ‘impressed’ with the young left-back, who has spent the last few weeks on trial with them, as per Lilywhites insider John Wenham.

He had played in six matches for Southend in the National League earlier this season, before making his debut for THFC’s U18s (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Wenham on Sayers

Speaking to Football Insider, Wenham has now given some insight into Sayers, and claims that he could be promoted to the U23s soon:

“I knew he was going to sign as soon as he captained the Under 18s last week.

“We wouldn’t have given him the armband if he was still on trial.

“From what I understand he’s already trained with the Under 23s as well.

“Everything else I have heard about him is really exciting. He’s already played for Southend’s senior side.

“He can carry that experience into the Under 18s and he will be looking at a space in the Under 23s too.

“Dennis Cirkin left and joined Sunderland in the summer and we haven’t replaced him.

“So, is there a chance for him to go even further straight away? I wouldn’t rule it out.

“This is a really exciting move and I can’t wait to follow Sayers’ development.”

The Verdict: Bright future

The fact that he is only 17 years of age and could be promoted to the U23s already suggests that Sayers has a bright future on his hands.

Having already played senior football with Southend, he would have learned a lot from his experience, and playing in those physical games will only speed up his development.

If the Englishman can now impress with the U23s as well as the U18s, he should certainly catch the eye of Antonio Conte, who could use some cover for Sergio Reguilon at left-back, given that Ben Davies has been playing as a central defender in his new system.

Nonetheless, Sayers is a player that you can see coming through the Academy and into the senior squad at a later date.
