Dhoni slams Jadeja's guilty verdict

MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said the guilty verdict against Ravindra Jadeja for his role in the incident involving James Anderson at Trent Bridge was hurtful and negligent

Sidharth Monga at Ageas Bowl26-Jul-2014MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said the guilty verdict against Ravindra Jadeja for his role in the incident involving James Anderson at Trent Bridge was hurtful and negligent. In his verdict, the match referee David Boon had said he was “not comfortably satisfied” that Jadeja’s role amounted to a Level 2 charge, and punished him for a Level 1 offence. The allrounder was found guilty of “conduct contrary to the spirit of the game” and fined 50% of his match fee.For the first time, one side’s account of the incident that occurred as the players were walking off for lunch on day two of the first Test has emerged. “To me, it is a very hurtful decision,” Dhoni, who was witness to the incident, said. “A lot of things were neglected in judging the case. If you see, what exactly happened, the umpires called for lunch and we started walking. I don’t want to take any other individual’s name. We started walking, and the other individual started using foul language against Jadeja. I had to step in the middle. And by the time we reached the ropes I thought the thing has diffused.”By the time we were going through the members’ area I was ahead of Jadeja. Jadeja was a couple of yards behind me. Again something happened. Something was told to him. And he just turned across to the individual, and after that he was pushed. And he barely gained his balance, and he turned to see as to what is happening. And on the basis of that he is fined.MS Dhoni has come out in strong support of his allrounder Ravindra Jadeja•Getty Images”It was said that it was against the spirit of the game, and everything. What we have to see is, we can’t ignore what has happened. If someone is saying something to you from behind and you just turn and you look, that is not aggressive. Especially the fact that the bat was under his armpit throughout – right from [calling of] lunch till he entered the dressing room. Not one word was spoken by him.”Dhoni insisted Jadeja had not been aggressive in his conduct. “So a lot of things were neglected,” he said. “It’s for you guys to decide the things I am saying and if I have not lied. When it comes to factual matter, Jadeja – whatever he did – was not aggressive. I don’t think there was even a little bit of aggression in that, and that is why I am very hurt by the verdict that has been given.”Dhoni was also unhappy about not being allowed an appeal because the first guilty verdict for a Level 1 offence does not have a provision for an appeal. “That’s the beauty of it,” he said. “Allegation is of Level 2, and Jadeja gets punished under Level 1. The beauty of Level 1 is you cannot appeal against it. But BCCI and legal are working things out. We are definitely not at all happy with the verdict. I have dictated what the facts were.”India had pressed Level 3 charges against Anderson, who will have his hearing on August 1. England’s response was a Level 2 charge against Jadeja. India’s accusation was that Jadeja had been abused and pushed by Anderson; England said Jadeja had turned around and approached Anderson in an aggressive manner.

Regime change suits Carberry

A change of England management has brought Michael Carberry’s international career in from the cold and he now has his sights on a summer for England across all formats. Carberry criticised his treatment by England having not being selected for any one-day cricket this year but has been recalled for the Sri Lanka series.Carberry emerged with more credit than most during England’s disastrous Ashes campaign but was left out of the following one-day series, which England lost 4-1. Carberry subsequently gave a newspaper interview where he reproached Ashley Giles and his backroom staff and said he doubted things would change much in the England camp even with a new coach. But Carberry’s fears were unfounded and quickly after Peter Moores was installed as England’s new head coach, he was quickly in touch with encouraging news.”It wasn’t looking great but I had a chat with Peter Moores and the new selectors and they’ve made it clear to me that I’m still very much a part of things, which is good to know,” Carberry said. “I’ve not been cast aside. So I’m really looking forward to what lies ahead.”Pete’s been open and honest with me and where he sees me and has make it clear to me that I’ve not been put on the scrap heap and that I’ve still got a big future with England. I’d worked with him before at England A level so I’m used to him and I know the type of guy he is. He made it clear to me that I’m very much a part of things going forward.”Carberry struck out at his omission from any one-day cricket post-Ashes, despite an outstanding 2013 in both 40- and 20-over cricket that earned him an initial England call-up. Of his non-selection Carberry told , “I don’t think it’s a cricket reason” and said he received more constructive feedback from the Australian players than England management.Six weeks on from the interview and with Carberry recalled, England’s new chairman of selectors James Whittaker described the issue as “water under the bridge” and Carberry holds no regrets over the frank comments.”I’m a man’s man,” he said. “I stand by what I believe rightly or wrongly. Thankfully it wasn’t taken personally by England because it wasn’t meant as a personal dig at them. We’re in a business where we all have to take criticism as players and as an establishment.”So as James Whittaker rightly said, we’ve had a chat about it and they’ve put it as water under the bridge and so have I. They know where I’m coming from and I know where they’re coming from and they’ve expressed to me that they still see me as part of their plans so hopefully we can all move forward.”I guess I’m just good at speaking from the heart. I’ve been through a lot in this game and I’ve never been one to hide what I really say. If you want to move forward as a player and as a team sometimes you have to be honest, not only with yourself but with your team, and I’m sure the England team want to move forward from a difficult winter and I’m sure there would have been a lot of other things said as well, honestly, from other players. Players are allowed to express their opinion.”Carberry could now have five ODIs and a T20 to prove his international limited-overs credentials, with England sounding out a squad for the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in less than 12 months’ time. He will be keen to improve on his showing against Australia last summer, where he only managed one half-century in four innings, and hopes it can serve as platform to retaining his Test spot.”I’m still hopeful of playing Test cricket, definitely,” he said. “I thoroughly enjoyed this winter, not the result, but it was a great challenge against a great Australian bowling attack, I don’t think you’ll get that too many times in your career, to challenge your technique and temperament in six weeks of intense cricket was an unbelievable experience and one that I look back very fondly on.”I competed very well and would have liked a different result and obviously a few more runs. But I hung in there well and that gives me confidence moving forward in my Test career if I’m to play any more.”

Uganda edge Italy in one-wicket thriller

ScorecardFile photo: Gareth Berg’s 67 was in vain as Uganda squeaked through by one wicket•ICC/Getty

Uganda pulled off a surprise victory over Italy to register their first win of the qualifiers in Abu Dhabi. Italy batted first, with the openers putting on a decent stand of 35. Wicketkeeper Andy Northcote was the first to go in the fifth over when he was trapped in front by offspinner Frank Nsubuga. Peter Petricola joined opener Gareth Berg to put on a further 39 runs by the 11th over. A couple of more small partnerships later, Italy were able to reach 148 for 4, with Berg top-scoring with 62 off 34 balls, which included seven fours and two sixes. This continued his good run of form, where he had scored 90 off 47 balls in the previous match against USA.In reply, Uganda started rather abjectly, with opener Roger Mukasa falling off just the second ball of the innings. Abram Mutyagaba and Hamza Saleh then put on 33, before Saleh was bowled by Vince Pennazza. Arthur Kyobe came in next and smashed a 15-ball 36, which comprised five sixes, to help Uganda stay on par with the required rate. But they also lost wickets at regular intervals. At 97 for 8 in the 14th over, there was still another 52 required for victory, with about six overs to go. Cameos from Richard Okia (33*) and Charles Waiswa (21) took them close, and Uganda were able to hold their nerve and score the winning runs with just one wicket in hand, and one ball to spare.
ScorecardAn Irfan Ahmed century, combined with Munir Dar’s 4 for 17, helped Hong Kong make it three out of three as they defeated Canada by 53 runs in Abu Dhabi. Canada won the toss and put Hong Kong in to bat, which proved a significant miscalculation as Ahmed and Waqas Barkat flayed Canada’s rather insipid bowling attack to the tune of 102 runs inside of 12 overs. After Barkat fell for 31, wickets began to fall more regularly, with Irfan plundering on to reach a maiden century in any format, finishing with 100 off 53 balls which included four fours and eight sixes. Hong King finished their quota of overs on 168 for 5.Canada’s innings did not start promisingly as their top three were gone with just 44 on the board in the 10th over. None of the batsmen were able to capitalise on their starts, with Jimmy Hansra (26) and Raza-ur-Rehman (23) being the only ones to cross into the twenties. Dar put on a splendid show with the ball, taking 4 for 17, as Canada stumbled to 115 for 8. This now means that Canada has lost both their opening matches, making qualification an uphill battle from here on.

Afghanistan can cause upsets – Akram Khan

Akram Khan, the former Bangladesh captain, has said that Afghanistan’s achievement at qualifying for the 2015 World Cup is akin to when his side won the 1997 ICC Trophy to seal a 1999 World Cup berth

Mohammad Isam07-Oct-2013Celebrations in Kabul after Afghanistan’s first-ever qualification to the 2015 World Cup evoked memories of the scenes in Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh when they won the ICC Trophy in 1997 to qualify for the 1999 World Cup.It’s a doorway to international exposure and more, but there are several pitfalls to be avoided, said Akram Khan, who led Bangladesh in the 1997 ICC Trophy triumph, and played a pivotal role in its transition to the biggest stage.”One achievement can create a lot of goals,” Akram told ESPNcricinfo. “After we qualified for the 1999 World Cup, I said that my dream was to beat Pakistan. And we did it. Having seen some of the Afghanistan players in Dhaka this year, I am sure they will upset a few teams. They deserve qualification to the 2015 World Cup.””The world will see you play. It will open doors for you, particularly these days when a lot of domestic competitions are looking for performers.”Akram said that the Bangladesh players were slowly getting prepared for the stage they reached in 1997 and 1999 through years of near-misses at the ICC Trophy, and a strong club cricket structure at home. Domestic cricket should be a priority for Afghanistan, he added, and the passion of the general public will be an added advantage.”If Afghanistan has a domestic structure going, if they get the facilities and the security, you will see their improvement. Seeing their passion after their qualification was confirmed, I think they have something big waiting for them in cricket. They have a physical advantage to some of the other teams at their level.Akram also warned against complacency, particularly in terms of maintaining a regular flow of players.”UAE had the chance to make it big in international cricket when we were also an Associate side, but they didn’t utilize the opportunity. Bangladesh did it quite well but there is a lot left to do in terms of playing standards.”When Kenya had their best side, most of them came from one or two families. It is important to hold on to a steady side. We had Mashrafe, then came Ashraful, Shakib, Tamim, Mushfiqur. Kenya and UAE didn’t have this flow of players.”Another factor that the Afghan players must be wary about is a drop in form. They are going to carry around the tag of “minnows” for as long as cricket fans and the media want, and when minnows do badly, calls for their head become inevitable. Just ask Bangladesh. Both teams are coincidentally in the same group during the 2015 World Cup. They have played twice against each other, both in Twenty20 matches, with Bangladesh winning on both occasions, but the likes of Mohammad Nabi, Mohammad Shahzad, Shapoor Zadran, Hamid Hassan and Gulbadin Naib, who have all played in the Bangladesh Premier League and the 50-over Dhaka Premier League, have given a glimpse of what to expect in the forthcoming tournaments. The Afghanistan Cricket Board has expressed unease about their relationship with the BCB. There is mutual admiration, and help has already begun in the form of recruiting Afghanistan players, and their growing popularity in the country. It could all stoke a fine rivalry, and the context is already being set. Bangladesh’s biggest rival has so far been Zimbabwe, so a new rival closer to home could make things more interesting.

Alice Capsey stars as South East Stars claim inaugural Charlotte Edwards Cup

Teenager named Player of the Match for unbeaten 40 off 26 as Diamonds come up short

ECB Reporters' Network05-Sep-2021Alice Capsey shrugged off a mid-innings collapse to smash 40 off 26 balls and hand South East Stars the inaugural Charlotte Edwards Cup with a five-wicket victory over Northern Diamonds. The 17-year-old Capsey, a Hundred sensation with victors Oval Invincibles, arrived in the midst of four wickets falling in 14 balls to both steady the ship and take her side to the finish line.Stars were chasing 139 to win after Diamonds captain Hollie Armitage made an unbeaten 59, and they had a 71-run platform set by their openers, Bryony Smith and Aylish Cranstone. But it was Capsey who once again underlined her big-game temperament to take Stars over the line with two overs to spare in front of 1270 at the Ageas Bowl.Diamonds found a formula in their victory over Southern Vipers in the eliminator earlier in the day, and replicated it steadfastly. Again, they won the toss, batted carefully in the Powerplay, one of their top four – Armitage rather than Lauren Winfield-Hill – did the bulk of the scoring and Jenny Gunn scored an unbeaten 22.This time the openers reversed their dismissals, with Leah Dobson caught at mid-off and Bess Heath run out – by an incredible pick-up and direct hit from Emma Jones.England batter Winfield-Hill scored 65 in the victory over the Vipers but fell for a third-ball duck when she was leg before to Grace Gibbs. But Armitage, whose previous highest score for Diamonds this season was 21, took control with a run-hard approach – only scoring four boundaries despite a strike rate in excess of 120.The skipper reached her half-century in 41 balls, identical to Winfield-Hill in the afternoon, as she added 43 with Sterre Kalis – who was caught and bowled by Linsey Smith – and an unbroken 50 with Gunn.Where the Vipers stuttered in response, Stars attacked in the Powerplay, Smith and Cranstone both striking three fours apiece, with the former also adding a slog-swept six as 50 was smashed in the first six overs. After a further 26 runs in 13 balls, Cranstone stepped on her own stumps before Smith chopped her namesake on in the following over. A collapse was in full effect when Katie Levick’s legspin accounted for Gibbs and Phoebe Franklin – caught deep midwicket and mid-on respectively – in four balls, with four wickets falling in quick succession.Amid the chaos, the precociously talented teenager Capsey had arrived at the crease, scooped to the boundary first ball and was motoring. A straight six, a sweetly timed flicked through midwicket were the eye-candy among 14 singles and two twos. She added 51 with the equally impressive Alice Davidson-Richards, who was caught at extra cover with three still required, before Capsey flicked off her legs to give her side their first piece of silverware.
