Image: How Lee Cattermole reacted after Sunderland’s defeat to Fleetwood

[ad_pod ]

Sunderland were on course to take the fight for automatic promotion to the final day as they led Fleetwood Town for 44 minutes during their League One clash at Highbury on Tuesday night, but a late collapse ensured they were officially consigned to the play-offs.

Defeat for Portsmouth on the same night meant that the Black Cats had the perfect chance to jump above the south coast club in the table and still have something to play for this weekend, even if they needed a win and a goal difference swing.

However goals from Paddy Madden and Ashley Eastham in the final 17 minutes ensured that wasn’t going to happen.

Sunderland fans have suffered a lot of heartache over the years but one fan manages to pick his ultimate low in the video below…

The latter found the net in the 94th minute to rub salt into the visitors’ wounds, with Jack Ross’ men struggling for form and only taking only two points from the previous nine available ahead of their trip to Southend United on Saturday.

Midfielder Lee Cattermole is known for his committed performances – and yellow cards – on the pitch, and you may have expected that he in particular would have been furious after the late goal that ensured the Mackems would return to Wearside with no points.

However, the 31-year-old instead cut a forlorn figure as you can see from the photograph above, which indicates the lack of confidence he and his teammates have right now.

Sunderland need to pull themselves together in the coming days and weeks if they are to secure an instant return to the Championship, especially given they could face either Pompey or an in-form Charlton Athletic in the play-off semi-finals.

Charlton line up Lee Clarke as Bowyer successor

[ad_pod ]

According to Sky Sports, Lee Bowyer would consider trading Charlton for QPR, who recently sacked their manager, Steve McClaren, and the Addicks hierarchy are already looking at a replacement for the man who has guided them into the play-off places despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding his future.

Bowyer, who was appointed as permanent boss back in September, has yet to be offered a new deal at The Valley despite the excellent job he has done and the club could soon pay the price for their procrastination, with Championship outfit QPR circling.

While the prospect of letting Bowyer go, be it before the end of the season or after, is unthinkable from an Addicks fan’s point of view, Roland Duchatelet and co already seem to have accepted that the 42-year-old could depart and have subsequently set their sights on former Newcastle manager Lee Clarke, according to The Sun.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

The 46-year-old has been out of work since a brief stint with Bury two years ago but is ready to make a return to management – could that be with Charlton? What do you think, Addicks fans, would you be happy if Bowyer was replaced by Clark in the coming weeks or months? Let us know in the comments below…

Transfer Focus: How Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic deal could damage Liverpool’s bid for Thorgan Hazard

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool’s lack of strength in depth in advanced positions has been masked by the brilliance of Mo Salah and Sadio Mane over the course of the past two seasons, but Jurgen Klopp needs to rectify that problem to keep in touching distance of Manchester City next season.

What’s the word?

Well, according to a recent report from Het Nieuwsblad, Klopp has already set the wheels in motion to add a quality talent to his forward-thinking options.

The report claims that the Reds are interested in Borussia Monchengladbach’s Thorgan Hazard, and the Bundesliga outfit want the 26-year-old attacker to move to Anfield instead of Borussia Dortmund, another interested party.

However, crucially, Hazard is eager to acquire regular opportunities and he views Dortmund as the destination which offers him greater guarantees of first-team football.

Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic deal is key

It’s easy to sympathise with Hazard’s feeling that Liverpool may not offer him the opportunities he naturally craves at this stage in his career. Mo Salah and Sadio Mane are practically untouchable in their respective wide positions, and dethroning them would represent a monumental task for him to undertake.

But the situation is less complicated at Dortmund, especially now Chelsea have agreed to sign Christian Pulisic in a stunning £58 million. Not only was the deal stunning in the enormity of the transfer fee, it was one which very few had seen coming when the deal was announced.

Jadon Sancho has represented Dortmund’s first-choice attacking wide player for the majority of the season so far, while Pulisic, Jacob Bruun Larsen and Marius Wolf have all been vying for a spot in the starting XI.

The soon-to-be Chelsea talent has endured a stop-start season through injury but his departure undoubtedly leaves a gap in Dortmund’s squad which needs to be filled, and it appears Hazard, who has scored 12 goals in all-competitions this season, has been identified as the man to step into the USA international’s shoes.

Neither Larsen or Wolf have done enough to prove they are ready to cement a place in the starting line-up, leaving Dortmund with a place which is blatantly up for grabs.

At Liverpool, meanwhile, Xherdan Shaqiri has been a bit-part player at best and his inability to hold a place down in Klopp’s XI proves that opportunities are not easy to come by. Naby Keita has also struggled for regular opportunities since making his move from the Bundesliga, and his career will hardly be filling Hazard with deep enthusiasm over a potential switch to Merseyside.

There is compelling evidence to suggest that, in comparison with Liverpool, Dortmund will offer solid assurances over a regular starting berth next term – a notion that has been enhanced by Pulisic’s decision to move to Stamford Bridge.

Man United fans on Twitter discuss Toby Alderweireld links

[ad_pod ]

Manchester United fans on Twitter are fuming over links to Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld after strong rumours emerged on Wednesday evening.

The Mirror have reported that the Old Trafford club have been given the green light over a move for the Belgian international, and they could pay as little as £25 million for the Barcelona and Juventus target in the summer transfer window.

United supporters may remember Jose Mourinho chasing the 30-year-old last summer to no avail, with the hierarchy in Manchester blocking the deal over tactical fears.

Now, it seems the shoe is on the other foot and the board are keen on the defender, this has led fans to accuse Ed Woodward of “going the cheap” option by waiting for Alderweireld to near the end of his contract when Spurs will be forced to sell up or risk losing him on a free transfer, to swoop.

But supporters are not happy that the centre-back could be the marquee defensive signing of the summer as Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli seems to be the much better option.

Relive the glorious moment that Aubameyang won redemption against Man Utd in the video below…

He’s younger, right in the middle of the prime years of his career at 27, and many have called for his signing instead while others have focussed on Alderweireld’s abilities solely, accusing him of being a fraud and begging United not to bring him in.

شطة للاعبي الأهلي: احذروا من موسيماني!

Swansea Injury News: Oliver McBurnie emerges as doubt for Leeds clash

Swansea City boss Graham Potter has conceded that Oliver McBurnie could miss Wednesday’s Championship clash with Leeds United at Elland Road.

McBurnie, who has been in excellent form for Swansea this season, has been hindered by illness in recent weeks and his spot against Leeds is far from certain.

What did Potter say?

Swansea’s official website quotes Potter as saying:

“Oli has just had a period where he has picked up a few things, so we just have to be careful with him and monitor him.

“He trained lightly yesterday (Sunday), so we will see how he goes. I think it was tough for him to come on, but we will make a decision for Leeds closer to the time.”

McBurnie is enjoying a terrific season for Swansea, having found the back of the net on 15 occasions in 30 appearances in all competitions this term.

In the Championship, the striker has 13 goals in 29 appearances, including a brace in the recent 3-3 draw with Birmingham City.

McBurnie came off the bench in his team’s 1-0 win over Millwall at the weekend and it had been thought that he could return to the XI against Leeds.

Potter, however, has conceded that Swansea ‘have to be careful’ with the centre-forward as they risk losing him for a longer period without the right treatment.

What is the state of play for Swansea?

It has been a strange season for Swansea and not too many of their fans were happy with the club’s business in the January transfer window.

The Welsh outfit have only lost one of their last seven in the Championship, however, with a total of 44 points leaving them in 11th position in the table.

The former Premier League team are just six points off the playoff positions and a win over title hopefuls Leeds this week would send out a huge message.

Leeds have really wobbled in recent weeks, but did manage to pick up a good point away to Middlesbrough on Saturday afternoon.

It promises to be a fascinating clash at Elland Road on Wednesday night and the Swansea fans will be hopeful that McBurnie passes a late fitness test.

The Chalkboard: Everton may have found their shock Baines replacement in Dowell

[ad_pod ]

Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell was handed a surprise new role for loan side Sheffield United when they hosted Middlesbrough at Bramall Lane on Wednesday night, and it may have indicated that he can be the club’s surprise Leighton Baines replacement.

On the chalkboard

Well, the 21-year-old moved to the Championship high-flyers on loan until the end of the season during the January transfer window having found first-team opportunities hard to come by under Marco Silva, and he had largely featured in his preferred attacking midfield role to date.

However, Chris Wilder decided to hand the England U21 international a slightly different job by lining him up at left wing-back against Boro, and he certainly didn’t disappoint with an impressive and tireless display as his temporary team kept a clean sheet in a 1-0 win.

Dowell will be determined to make a positive impression for the Yorkshire outfit to prove to the Toffees that he has a long-term future at Goodison Park, and his latest display may have done his chances of doing exactly that the world of good.

Baines replacement?

It is clear to see that Lucas Digne will be Everton’s first-choice left-back/wing-back for the foreseeable future, but the Merseyside club don’t have a lot of depth beyond the Frenchman.

In this era of ‘big 6’ dominance, has finishing 7th become as good as winning a trophy? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have their say in the video below…

That has meant that when he has been absent that veteran Baines has filled in, but sooner or later they will have to find a replacement for the 34-year-old whose contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Dowell may well have just proven that Silva already has his successor in the squad, and that he has the ability and quality to be Digne’s understudy.

Phil Hay says Pablo Hernandez showed his "class" in Leeds win

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay has said that Pablo Hernandez’s performance during Leeds United’s 1-0 win over Reading last weekend “proved his class again”.The Spaniard has faced some recent criticism from some Leeds fans. However, Hay has praised the 34-year-old for his contribution against the Royals.Hernandez scored the only goal of the match in the 57th minute of the contest, but his overall statistics from the Championship affair were also impressive.

A true test for any Leeds fan: Can you match these iconic images with the right results?

Indeed, according to WhoScored, the attacker had six shots, made two tackles and completed 58 passes during his 85 minutes on the field.

Hernandez has taken on a new role for the Whites this season, operating in a central position for the promotion hopefuls, who go to Middlesbrough tonight.

And it will be fascinating to see whether the Spaniard can lead Marcelo Bielsa’s side into the Premier League following the disappointment of last season.

Hay’s words on the experienced campaigner are available to view below:

Meanwhile, a number of Leeds fans have been reacting to some Bielsa footage.

Between The Lines: Steven Gerrard hints at return to 4-4-2 system

[ad_pod ]

In his post-match press conference following Rangers’ 3-0 win over Livingston, reported by The Scottish Sun, Gers boss Steven Gerrard made it clear that it was not a change in formation that brought his side victory, following their defeat to Kilmarnock in the previous match.

What was said?

Rangers lined up in a 4-3-3 formation to take on Livingston on Sunday. This marked a change, with the side having switched to a 4-4-2 system against Kilmarnock in the previous match to accommodate both Alfredo Morelos and new boy Jermain Defoe in the starting XI.

The Gers fell to a bitter 2-1 defeat to their fellow title contenders however, but were comfortable winners against Livingston. Gerrard was keen to stress that this turnaround in fortunes was not due to his formation change.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

“I don’t think the change of formation was responsible.

“If you’re comparing it with Kilmarnock, we beat ourselves on Wednesday night.

“It was nothing to do with tactics or formation, it was to do with a defender gifting Kilmarnock a lead, then us giving a square pass and getting done on a counter attack.

“It was nothing to do with personnel, 4-4-2 or 4-3-3.”

What he meant

It is clear then that the former Liverpool midfielder has not ruled out a return to a 4-4-2 set-up. In fact, such a system makes a lot of sense when considering the options available to him.

20-goal star striker Alfredo Morelos and January signing Jermain Defoe both have the capacity to be lethal up front and could form a prolific partnership at Ibrox Stadium. A 4-4-2 formation is the most straightforward way of getting the Colombian and the 36-year-old veteran playing up front together.

With Gerrard clear that his formations can change, a return to a 4-4-2 system could soon be on the cards.
