Jan Bednarek’s new contract could be bad news for Jack Stephens

Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek committed to a new contract with the Saints earlier this week, which could spell bad news for Jack Stephens, with regards to his chances of breaking back into the first-team.

The English centre-back has struggled for game time this season, with Bednarek and Jannik Vestergaard often preferred by Ralph Hasenhuttl, as he has made just four appearances in the Premier League, averaging a disappointing 6.40 rating (per WhoScored).

Following the announcement that the Polish international had committed to a new deal until the summer of 2025, it seems unlikely that he is going to be displaced from this Southampton side any time soon.

Meanwhile, Vestergaard has started the season in superb form for the South Coast club, averaging a 7.08 rating across his nine top-flight appearances.

Considering the Saints also have young Mohammed Salisu available to them now, with Hasenhuttl confirming that the summer signing was in contention to play against Brighton on Monday night, you worry that Stephens could soon be surplus to requirements at the South Coast club.

The academy graduate has gone on to make 116 appearances for the Saints, in which he has contributed six goals and five assists (per Transfermarkt).

Hasenhuttl was full of praise for the centre-back earlier this year, but also pointed out areas in which he could improve, saying:

“With the ball, definitely he’s one of our best defensive players we have.

“Against the ball, not always so happy with him, I haven’t been, at the beginning of the season.

“It is sometimes getting better, but this is still a part of his game where he can be more aggressive sometimes.

“If he is, then he has a very good package as a centre-back because he reads the game very well, he has a fantastic build-up of the game and then he is a very good player.” (per Daily Echo)

It seems as if Hasenhuttl hasn’t seen enough of those improvements from Stephens, as he has found himself on the bench more often than not so far this season.

If he can’t re-establish himself in the first-team at all during the busy Christmas period, then it would perhaps not be a surprise to see the £4.95 million-rated defender leave Southampton in the not too distant future.

Glasgow Rangers defender Borna Barisic deserves a new deal

Glasgow Rangers must give Borna Barisic a new deal if recent reports are to be believed…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, Barisic has received praise from former treble-winning Rangers boss Alex McLeish. McLeish admitted that he had doubted him when he first arrived at Ibrox, but believes the “tremendous” defender is now an important part of Steven Gerrard’s side.

He said: “There was talk that he wasn’t quite good enough for the Rangers level, he’d again hit a bit of a patch of bad form and looking a wee bit vulnerable.

“But that’s confidence and you don’t know what a person is like, you’ve never walked in their shoes and it’s difficult to know what he’s feeling in his stomach or what he’s feeling in his head at a certain moment.

“In my days at Aberdeen, I remember losing my form and Sir Alex dropped me and I was humiliated.

“Then I played in a game and I thought I did pretty well but we got battered 3-0 by Dundee United, 3-0 at home. I thought, ‘that’s it, I’ll be dropped again’ but he said to me: ‘That was more like yourself tonight,’ and all of a sudden my mentality came back strong again and my confidence was there.

“They’re only human so I think Barisic has actually exceeded expectations now such is his tremendous form.”

Barisic was part of the back four alongside Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and James Tavernier that prevented Celtic from taking a single shot on target during the first Old Firm derby of the season. It’s now up to Ross Wilson to convince the left-back to sign a new deal after he attracted interest from elite clubs in the summer.

Deserves new deal

Alright, we get it – the Croatia international recently signed a contract extension at the start of the year, whilst his wages have increased to £18,000-per-week, which is more than what club captain James Tavernier currently earns.

Rangers slapped an £8m price tag on his head, although that may not be enough to deter potential suitors if Premier League clubs like Leeds United rear their ugly heads in January. In fact, Leeds were willing to pay £13m to prise Robin Koch away from Freiburg, who now earns £50,000-per-week at Elland Road, which just goes to show the amount of money they are willing to throw at their defence.

However, Gerrard once again insisted the Croatian is not for sale, saying: “We’re not surprised if there is any interest in Borna.

“Of course we’re not because he has been a consistent performer for us for some time now and he has started the season so brightly again.

“But he has signed a long-term deal here, everyone loves him, the fans like him and he was in the running for Player of the Year.”

Even so, the 27-year-old may be unable to resist such a tempting lucrative offer in the future. As we all know, money talks.

Whilst Barisic may not be going anywhere anytime soon at the very least, a hike in wages should be more than enough to fend off any lingering interest from elsewhere in the winter transfer window for the time being.

SofaScore gave him a high grade of 7.4 for his performance at Parkhead – he completed one interception and two clearances, whilst he made one key pass, two crosses, created one big chance, and won three out of six ground duels, as well as five out of seven aerial duels.

He received a rating of 7/10 from Sky Sports, whilst The Daily Record gave him the same score, claiming he “was able to match the attacking runs of Frimpong down his side with good positional sense and one brilliant ball almost volleyed home by Kent.”

If the Gers are to regain their title, we suspect that he may have a part to play bombing up and down the flanks. That’s if he stays until the end of the season, of course.

AND in other news, Rangers must watch out for Standard Liege’s Mehdi Carcela in Europa League…

Leeds news: Marcelo Bielsa suffers a blow as Arsenal set to hijack Draxler

In a rather surprising turn of events, Leeds United have been linked with Paris Saint-Germain’s Julian Draxler. No one really expected Marcelo Bielsa to be aiming that high but then again, it is in his nature to do so.

The Argentine coach is slowly but surely building a team worthy of competing in the Premier League and with the addition of the midfield star, his squad would be almost complete.

However, it seems that Bielsa has now suffered a heavy blow in the pursuit of the player’s signature as the latest report from L’Equipe suggests Paris Saint-Germain are set to offload Draxler to none other than Mikel Arteta.

In fact, the Parisiens want to sign Matteo Guendouzi and would then offer their player in return to get the deal over the line. Of course, this also means the Whites don’t exactly stand a chance in the race.

Arsenal want to offload Guendouzi anyway and the French titans are keen on bringing the 21-year-old back home. Seeing how the midfielder is out of favour at the Emirates, this deal should be more or less straightforward.

Still, nothing is set in stone and we will have to wait and see how Bielsa responds to this news. As of right now, it does seem like getting Draxler to Elland Road might be a task too tall for the Argentine coach.

But we should never really bet against El Loco and the transfer window can be extremely unpredictable at times.

Let’s wait and see what happens.

Verdict

Even though Leeds are on the rise, it would be fairly unexpected to see them land Draxler at this point in time. Now that Arsenal are reportedly in the race and have the upper hand, it might be a good time to look elsewhere.

After all, there are other targets that could still improve the Whites immensely.

Sunderland: No offer for Jay Spearing from Bradford City

Bradford City have not offered Sunderland target Jay Spearing a deal as the Black Cats look to make a summer move.

According to The Sun (5 July, page 61), Phil Parkinson is keen to take a punt on the former Bolton Wanderers and Liverpool midfielder after he became a free agent.

Parkinson will have a difficult summer ahead of him as he looks to rebuild his side after a second consecutive season without gaining promotion from League One to the Championship.

Finishing eighth in the League One table, the Wearsiders missed put on a play-off place and pressure will firmly be on Parkinson to make the right signings.

The Sun claims that Spearing is emerging as a transfer target after spending time under Parkinson at Bolton.

Spearing is reported to have been offered the chance to return to Merseyside with Tranmere Rovers, whilst Bradford were also said to be interest.

The Gazette report that despite the latter’s interest, a deal has not been offered, essentially making it a two-horse race between Sunderland and Tranmere.

This looks like good news for Sunderland, as it means that it remains a level playing field in the race to sign Spearing given no offer has been made by Bradford.

Signing the ex-Liverpool man could be good business from Parkinson. As mentioned he knows the player well from their time at Bolton and he is a player with lots of experience, not just in League One but also in the two divisions above – he has played 30 times in the Premier League.

Manchester United: Jadon Sancho’s potential move to Old Trafford ‘needs time’ according to Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United may be hit by a ‘surprise’ in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho this summer, according to reports.Â

German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung claimed, as cited by The Daily Star, that Borussia Dortmund believe they can force Man United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to cave into their demands by paying £110m forÂthe 11-cap England international.

While Woodward has made it clear that he will not pay over the odds for the right winger, Dortmund are confident he will surprise them by meeting their asking price.

United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made the 20-year-old his top target in the summer but both clubs remain far apart in their valuations, even though he has apparently agreed personal terms with the Red Devils.

Dortmund have also issued a deadline of August 10 to sort out a deal for Sancho before the Bundesliga challengers return to pre-season training, and it seems as though time has almost run out.

However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that both clubs remain locked in negotiations, which “needs time” to find satisfactory solutions.

The Italian transfer guru added that the Englishman is willing to wait and see what will happen, admitting that he would love to join the Red Devils in the summer.

Despite conflicting reports suggesting otherwise, it appears nothing much has changed as they are still trying to figure out a suitable fee. Daniel Geey noted that, as transfers get more complicated, deals can take a significant amount of time to sort out the finer details.

Sancho’s potential move to Old Trafford is not an easy process by any stretch of the imagination, as discussions over fees, employment contract, image rights and third-party investments are most likely taking place behind closed doors.

With so much work to get through, it is hardly surprising that the two sides are yet to reach an agreement. Put simply, fans simply have no other choice but to stay patient, as there are bound to be more developments in the weeks ahead.

United fans, do you think Ed Woodward will sign Sancho this summer? Let us know your views in the comments below!

Liverpool fans react to Dejan Lovren exit update

Arguably one of the forgotten men of what had been another incredible season for Liverpool, Dejan Lovren’s game-time at Anfield has been majorly limited.

The Croatia international has featured just 14 times across all competitions under Jurgen Klopp this year, with only nine of them coming in the Reds’ charge for the Premier League title.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

A muscle injury has played a big part in his lack of first-team action, and it now appears, he may have played one of his final games for the club.

According to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Serie A giants AS Roma hope that their good working relationship with Liverpool can allow them to strike a deal for Lovren.

After hearing about the update on the Croatian’s future, Liverpool fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the situation.

A couple of Liverpool fans name-checked Michael Edwards, and his incredible work in negotiating.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez helping to form a formidable partnership at the back – the Reds have conceded just 21 goals all season in the Premier League – it’s difficult to see how Lovren realistically fits into Klopp’s plans.

The Merseyside club may well just be better off cashing in on the centre-back this summer.

The Verdict: Should Wolves sign Franck Kessie this summer?

Wolverhampton Wanderers could go back in for one of their former targets this summer and our writers have given their verdicts on the potential move.

According to Calciomercato, AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie is being monitored by the west Midlanders as well as West Ham ahead of a possible end of season switch to the Premier League.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Nuno Santo was previously in for the box-to-box powerhouse during pre-season and again ahead of the January transfer window, so maybe it’ll be third time lucky for his Molineux-based side.

Kessie is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, although it remains to be seen how much the 23-year-old would cost Wolves.

He’s featured 25 times this season for the Serie A titans, so you’d imagine he wouldn’t come on the cheap.

Here’s what we think about the speculation…

Jack Saville

“Nuno could be making a huge blunder with a deal for Franck Kessie.

“The AC Milan regular’s form is erratic and Nuno would need to work wonders to make him a valuable asset in the Premier League.

“Boasting a passing accuracy of 88.1%, and given the fact he is dispossessed just 1.2 times per game, there’s no doubt the 23-year-old is neat and tidy in possession of the ball, but he is simply not effective enough in recovering possession to merit a move to Molineux.

“Kessie has averaged just 1.7 tackles and 0.7 interceptions per Serie A appearance this season while, by comparison, Joao Moutinho has made 2.7 and 1.4 respectively.

“If Wolves wish to progress and challenge the elite in English football, they’ll need to land a vastly superior long-term replacement for Moutinho at the base of the midfield.”

James Beavis

“There is a reason Franck Kessie was once compared to Yaya Toure, and that’s because he is a good football player.

“Yes, he may not have quite hit the heights with Serie A giants AC Milan, but it doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have that potential and quality to still be unlocked in those central areas.

“Look at Adama Traore, for example. The Spaniard was far from the finished article when he moved to Molineux from Middlesbrough, but now he is arguably one of the best in his position in the Premier League thanks to how Nuno Santo has developed him.

“If Wolves did get a deal over the line for Kessie, Santo could turn him into another Traore and finally have his long-term Joao Moutinho replacement at Molineux.

“Fosun would strike gold again by signing the 23-year-old.”

Lewis Blain

“As I have previously written about here, the addition of Kessie to Wolves’ midfield armoury would be an astute acquisition as it would allow Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho to thrive further forward up the pitch.

“Nuno is crying out for a proper defensive midfielder that can help protect his back three as Leander Dendoncker has been a bit hit-and-miss as seen by his recent exclusions from the starting XI.

“Kessie would bring the solution to Molineux with him averaging 1.7 tackles and 1.7 fouls per game in Serie A this season. That added bite could be the necessary factor to bring success through an elite and industrious midfield trio at Wolves.”
