The Lowdown: Spurs prepare for 2021/22

Moving into 2021/22, newly appointed manager Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping to re-scale what is a fragmented Spurs side, in order to challenge for continental qualification once again.

Making inroads in the transfer market, the Londoners have reportedly agreed terms with Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, which will come as a relief to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful.

Now, it looks as if Nuno may be chasing another deal in the coming days following recent developments.

The Latest: Spurs hold talks with Vestergaard; potential Alderweireld replacement

Tottenham have entered into discussions with Denmark international Vestergaard [Daily Mail].

Advantageously, the 6 foot 6 colossus’ contract is set to expire in twelve months which has made him an appealing pursuit for the Lilywhites [Daily Mail].

Recruiting in the centre-back area will be of particular importance to the UEFA Conference League qualifiers, owing to reports suggesting that current stopper Toby Alderweireld could depart this summer [CaughtOffside].

The Verdict: Vestergaard would be an astute signing for Spurs

Vestergaard would be an astute piece of business by the Spurs hierarchy.

Strong in aerial duels and disposing of dangerous situations, the 28-year-old would provide some much-needed leadership qualities within the Tottenham backline.

In 2020/21, the Dane made 33 appearances for the Saints in all competitions notching three goals [Transfermarkt]. Furthermore, he made an astounding average of four clearances every 90 minutes across the previous year which was the most in the entire Southampton squad [WhoScored].

Once labelled as ‘outstanding’ by popular Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer, his immense qualities would shine within the Tottenham Hotspur defence [The Boot Room].

Currently excelling in the EURO 2020 Championships with his native Denmark, it may be worth snapping him up now before other clubs take notice.

Pundit insists selling Llorente would not be major Leeds blow

Carlton Palmer believes selling Diego Llorente would not come as a major blow to Leeds United.

The central defender has attracted interest from fellow Premier League clubs despite seeing his first campaign in English football hampered by a string of injuries.

Llorente joined Leeds from Spanish side Real Sociedad for a fee believed to be in the region of £18million last September.

But groin and hamstring problems resulted in Llorente, who was a member of Spain’s Euro 2020 squad which reached the semi-finals, being limited to just 15 Premier League appearances.

With three years remaining on his £22,000-per-week contract, Leeds are not in a position where they are under pressure to sell the 27-year-old.

But former England international striker Palmer, who enjoyed a three-year stint with the Yorkshire club during his playing career, would understand Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa being open to Llorente departing within 12 months of switching to Elland Road.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Palmer said: “I think he’s a talented player but he has struggled with injury and he must have a decent-sized salary. You’ll miss quality players if they leave but they missed him already last season because of his injuries.

“You need players who are going to play 25-30 games a season. He’s undoubtedly got quality because he wouldn’t be a Spanish international if he didn’t.

“It’s a blow if he goes but it’s a blow anyhow because he’s not playing.”

'I'm trying to make sure that I'm fit for Lord's final' says Marcus

England star Marcus Trescothick was back at the County Ground this afternoon, after returning from his holiday in Spain

Richard Walsh05-Aug-2002England star Marcus Trescothick was back at the County Ground this afternoon, after returning from his holiday in Spain.I asked him how he felt about Somerset getting to the final of the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy at Lords. He told me: "It’s really fantastic news. I might not have been at the ground but I kept in touch all day with phone calls and text messages. It was pretty exciting at the end so I can’t wait to see the video of the match."Was he going to be able to play in the final I asked. He told me: "Funny you should ask me that because I have just had Michael Vaughan on the telephone about the same thing. I told him that I’m trying to make sure that I am fit for the Lords final. In fact the target for my return to cricket is the championship match against Lancashire at Blackpool just a few days before the final."He continued: "It’s too soon to be sure at the moment because it’s less than three weeks ago that I did it. However after another week hopefully we will have a clearer indication as to how things are progressing."All Somerset supporters will be hoping that Marcus will be there on August 31st to lead the side out onto the field, to open the batting and at the end to lift the trophy aloft.

Southampton handed Williams boost

A major update has emerged on Manchester United fullback Brandon Williams, regarding the chances of him joining Southampton on loan next season.

What’s the talk?

According to Hampshire Live, Manchester United are coming around to the idea of loaning Brandon Williams out next season. United rejected the chance to send Williams out on loan in the 2020/21 campaign as they wanted to keep him around Old Trafford as cover.

The report claims that United are now open to letting him leave on a temporary basis. Southampton and their Premier League rivals Norwich are both interested in landing the young full-back to bolster their respective squads this summer.

After handing Williams his Manchester United debut in 2019, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed him as being “brave” and praised his defending. He told MEN:

“The performance and debut of Brandon, fantastic. You can’t see any nerves, he’s so brave, the courage to take the ball and go forward. Great defending, very pleased, some big, big pluses today.”

Ralph needs him

Southampton’s fullback situation is in a dire state at the moment. Heading into next season, Kyle Walker-Peters is the only senior fullback, right-back or left-back, on Southampton’s books.

Ryan Bertrand is set to leave the club on a free transfer, whilst Sam McQueen remains on the sidelines and youngster Yan Valery was shipped out on loan to Championship side Birmingham. This means that Southampton are in desperate need of fullback reinforcements in the coming weeks.

Williams, therefore, could be an excellent addition to Hasenhuttl’s squad. Not only is he a solid option to potentially come in at right-back, but he is also capable of playing at left-back and has played on both sides at first-team level for Manchester United at Premier League level.

This shows that Solskjaer trusts Williams to put a good shift in on both sides of the pitch, which means that he could act as cover at right-back and left-back for Southampton – essentially providing two signings in one. Instead of bringing in a back-up for both positions, Martin Semmens can sign Williams and kill two birds with one stone – saving the club money in the transfer window.

The £65k-per-week dynamo has also proven his quality at Premier League and Europa League level. He averaged an exceptional WhoScored rating of 7.19 in the Europa League and 6.70 in the Premier League for United in the 2019/20 campaign as he started 19 games across those competitions.

He could be a useful and quality signing for the Saints, one that Hasenhuttl needs to fill out the gaps in his defensive ranks, so Semmens should pounce on this opportunity to sign him on loan next season now he’s likely to be available.

AND in other news, Semmens must avoid Saints error over £30m dud who “goes backwards”, fans would hate it…

Rites of Spring

It’s mid-April and on the fields of England the cricket season is under way. With temperatures barely above freezing in the early morning, rising to highs of only 12 celsius, slip fielders dread the sharp chance, spin bowlers struggle to gain a grip with numb fingers, and batsmen look to run sharp singles to keep warm. A description of the weather is an essential cliche in reporting theopening day of the first-class season, and the English climate usually co-operates in providing a suitably hostile environment for cricket. Today the weather was cold but fair, and play got underway on time at Fenners, Grace Road, the Parks, Canterbury and Millfield School. The first match of the English season used to be a showpiece, featuring matches such as champion county against the rest of England. These days it consists of gentle warm-up games for the counties against the University Centres of Cricketing Excellence. Their sides lack experience, and there are few familiar names in the team lists. Only three of the centres can field strong enoughsides for matches to be considered first-class, Durham, Oxford and Cambridge.

Warmup routine at Grace Road

The counties fielded near full strength squads, although no overseas players were on display – perhaps not needing the practice after full seasons, or otherwise committed elsewhere. Those who toured with the full England squad were also conspicuous only by their absence, apart from Paul Collingwood, making a useful 74 at number four in the local derby, Durham against Durham UCCE.The UCCE sides drew first blood, with the first wicket of the season, Phillip Weston of Worcestershire, playing in his 163rd first-class match falling to Toby Sharpe of Oxford UCCE, playing in his third, for a duck.A very familiar name recorded the first 50 of the season, a certain Graeme Hick, narrowly beating out Andrew Strauss. Only the first rain interruption of the season slowed his inexorable progress to his 118th first-class century.Robert Key was first to reach the three-figure mark, but Kent’s match against Loughborough is not first-class. Andrew Strauss won the race to the first first-class century, an entertaining innings with his hundred coming up off just 107 balls. Hick soon followed, completing perhaps one of the less demanding of his 118 centuries with his seventeenth boundaries.Hick then hit out – scoring his next 50 runs off just 15 balls, and reaching 164 before being stumped. After reaching his century he faced just 23 balls, and hit 12 of them for boundaries. Who knows what the season will bring for Hick? Perhaps passing Graveney and Compton on the most centuries list, perhaps yet another England recall, but certainly many runs in the Frizzell County Championship. Runs came freely for the county batsmen against the friendly bowling of the UCCE teams and by the end of the day JJB Lewis of Durham, BF Smith of Worcestershire, and Koenig of Middlesex also had centuries to their name. The start of the season carries the promise of spring, but also a touch of sadness. Who knows what might be achieved by the many new faces on display? Discerning eyes will be trying to pick those who might go on to greater things. But the arrival of the new marks the absence of names that have been familiar for years. Mike Atherton has retired, and Gus Fraser is shortly to do so after only a few matches. Other county stalwarts are no longer playing but are learning a new trade – Hartley, Kettleborough and Robinson are appearing in umpires’ coats for the first time today. Most missed of all when perusing the scorecards on CricInfo will be the names of Ben Hollioake and Umer Rashid; many watching the games today will have their recent tragic deaths very much in mind. Their teams, Surrey and Sussex, meet next week in the opening match of the Championship. But now cricket is underway and spring is here. The blank sheets of the scorers’ books await the recording of the runs and wickets that will outline the course of the year. For the players, anything is possible – runs galore, trophies, championships, England caps, and more. For those of us who watch, perhaps we hope to see the arrival of a new player to excite the imagination – a tearaway fast bowler, a thrilling hitter, a crafty spin bowler. Here’s hoping for a great season.

Is this Celtic’s new Scott McDonald?

When the summer transfer window opens, the new manager of Celtic should only have one thing on his mind at Parkhead; adding more to his attack.

This is a period where it looks increasingly likely that Odsonne Edouard will depart the Hoops and if he does, a replacement will be needed.

Edouard spoke excitedly of his desire a year ago to win ten in a row but after a dismal season for the Bhoys in 2020/21, it looks as though he’s finally had enough.

A move to Leicester City appears to be on the cards but with Leigh Griffiths also potentially leaving, it could leave Celtic particularly light in attack.

One option in the market could be Hibernian striker Kevin Nisbet.

He finished as the second top scorer in the Premiership this term with 14 goals to his name, making a big splash under Jack Ross at Easter Road.

As a result of his promising performances, he’s been linked with a move to Celtic.

It’s not the most appealing of moves on paper, especially if you’re trying to replace Edouard. Though, you only need to take a look at the impact players like Kris Boyd or Stuart McDonald have had since making similar switches to one of the Old Firm clubs.

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show this week, reporter Mark Guidi was speaking about Nisbet and a potential move to Paradise:

“He knows his way about this league, he can score goals. When you think back, we’re going back 15-20 years. When you’ve got goalscorers like that, I think they can step up. If you look at the classic example – Kris Boyd, Kilmarnock to Rangers for £400k, more than 100 goals,” he said.

“Scott McDonald – Motherwell to Celtic, £600k, handled it, no problems. So if you’ve got Kevin Nisbet available, he’s been linked with Celtic, I do think that for sure he’ll be on a list of names presented to Eddie Howe to look at and go and do his homework on,” Guidi added.

McDonald was a roaring success at Parkhead after making the leap from the Steelmen in 2007.

The Australian bagged 59 goals in 117 outings, proving that forwards can flourish after moving from a side lower down the table to Celtic.

Like McDonald, Nisbet had a habit of scoring goals throughout Scottish football before making his mark in the Premiership. The Celtic target has now had a fabulous two years, netting 23 in 33 for Dunfermline during 2019/20.

The Bhoys had similar success with Leigh Griffiths. After he scored 38 in 78 for Hibs, he made the move to Glasgow and has beaten the ‘keeper on 123 occasions in Celtic colours.

Nisbet wouldn’t just offer goals to the team either. According to Alan Archibald, the 24-year-old has plenty of qualities. Talking about his time at Partick Thistle, the coach said: “He had everything to his game; touch, strength, physicality and he was quick when he opened up as well.”

This proves they don’t necessarily need to spend big in order to replace Edouard this summer; there are plenty of jewels in the Premiership for them to lap up.

AND in other news, Report claims £7.2m “horror show” will never play for Celtic again, fans surely elated…

Villa got one over on Saints with Targett

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern, former Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie believes his old side have done a number on Southampton after signing Matt Targett.

Villa brought in the £15.3m-rated 25-year-old from St. Mary’s last summer and he has not disappointed.

In fact, his form has been so good, Villa recently decided to hand him a contract extension despite him only joining the club last season.

As for Southampton, Ryan Bertrand has nailed down that left-back spot under Ralph Hasenhuttl. However, with the England international 31 years of age and heading towards the exit door as his contract runs down, Hendrie thinks the south coast club might have missed a trick with Targett.

On the two English defenders, the former Villa player told TT in an exclusive interview:

“I do feel like they [Villa] have got one over on them [Southampton]. Ryan Bertrand, you know, he’s been a fabulous player and losing him when you haven’t got that strength in depth…

“So, yeah, I feel that Villa have got one over on Southampton by bringing Matt Targett to the football club and he’s relished, he’s blossomed into a good left-back.”

Going forward, Targett will be aiming to break into Gareth Southgate’s England squad, though that could be difficult due to the presence of Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell and Manchester United’s Luke Shaw.
