Premier League Transfer Roundup: Tierney bid rejected, Spurs bid for Zaniolo, Reds eye Coutinho

[ad_pod ]

Friday’s Premier League transfer roundup brought you an enquiry made for Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, West Ham’s offer for Sebastien Haller and Manchester United’s prepared bid for Yusuf Yazici. Today’s edition includes Arsenal’s rejected attempt to bring in a Celtic full-back, Tottenham’s offer for a Serie A youngster and Liverpool’s eyes on a former Anfield star.

Arsenal’s Tierney bid rejected

Unai Emery has a relatively slim budget to work with this summer at the Emirates Stadium, so you can forgive him for attempting to stretch it as far as possible. However, other clubs who are having their players targeted are unlikely to be so understanding. That is the case with Celtic, who have rejected a bid from the Gunners for left-back Kieran Tierney. The London outfit offered £25m for the 22-year-old, but that was not good enough for the Scottish Premier League champions. For them, Arsenal wanted to pay too much of the sum in add-ons, with the Bhoys instead looking to receive a bigger portion upfront.

Tottenham make Zaniolo offer

Tottenham have already done some good business this summer, with both Jack Clarke and Tanguy Ndombele having joined. And they aren’t about to stop there, it seems. According to journalist Alfredo Pedulla, the Lilywhites have made an offer to AS Roma for their 20-year-old playmaker Nicolo Zaniolo. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have lodged a bid of €27m (£24.3m), with Toby Alderweireld also included the deal. That will bring the overall package to €50m (£45m). With the former Southampton defender already being a target for the Giallorossi, it may be enough to convince the Serie A club to part with the Italian international.

Liverpool eye Coutinho return

Philippe Coutinho signed for FC Barcelona for a huge in January of last year after having impressed during his time in the Premier League. However, since then, things have not gone his way. He may even be on the move this summer, and a return to his former club is a possibility. According to Italian outlet Calcio Mercato, the Reds have made a bid for the Brazilian. Jurgen Klopp and co are looking to take him on an initial two-year loan, with a purchase option of £88m. The 27-year-old has also agreed to the Merseyside’s club’s proposal.

Leeds United summer signing Ben White already delivering on Victor Orta’s promise

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United defender Ben White impressed again during his team’s 5-1 pre-season friendly win against Tadcaster Albion on Wednesday, and he is already delivering on Victor Orta’s promise when the Brighton centre-back joined.

On the chalkboard

With Pontus Jansson departing for Brentford, the Yorkshire outfit are short of options at the heart of the defence right now, with Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi the only two senior players available.

However, 20-year-old White has arrived from the Seagulls on July 1, and the early signs are that he is capable of stepping up as a starter for the Championship promotion hopefuls during the 2019/20 campaign.

When he signed, Orta explained about the process of bringing the youngster to Elland Road, saying: “It’s difficult to find a centre-back with his quality with the ball, with his pace, he always defends really high.

“With his intensity, and with his experience in League Two and League One, he’s a professional player that’s always passing the challenges of his career.”

Decent showing

White started alongside Leif Davis in the middle of the backline on Wednesday and followed up his impressive debut against Guiseley, showing he has the attributes that were mentioned when he put pen to paper on the season-long loan deal.

The Yorkshire Evening Post gave him a 7/10 rating for his latest display, and they too picked up on his ball-playing abilities as well as some of the impressive diagonal passes he played on the night.

Of course, it was hardly the highest level of opposition, but his fundamental qualities are still there for all to see.

Given Marcelo Bielsa’s lack of options right now and if no other new centre-back signings arrive before the window slams shut, White could easily find himself in the starting XI for the trip to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City on August 4.

He may never have played above League One level before, but he looks ready to take his chance and repay the faith shown in him by Orta and Co.

Season In Numbers: Mark Noble’s Premier League 2018/2019

[ad_pod ]

It’s been a talking point among the Claret & Blue Army for a couple of seasons now; when will Mark Noble be stepping aside to allow a younger player to take up a first-choice role in central midfield?

The Academy of Football product is 31 now and not many central midfielders make it into their 30s without taking up more of a squad position.

Noble is the skipper at London Stadium although that’s not the reason he’s still a regular, it’s more down to him losing very little of his ability, quality and stamina over the years.

It was thought that the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini, a manager that would perhaps prefer more dynamic options in the centre of the park, last summer would be the beginning of the end for Noble.

However, not only was he able to keep his place in the starting Xl when fit, the former England under-21 international was offered a contract extension during the 2018/2019 season.

But was there anything in that campaign to suggest that Noble will finally lose his place next campaign? Today we look at the statistics in order to answer that question.

As you can see from the above infographic containing stats from WhoScored, Noble impressively only missed seven league matches last term.

The 31-year-old, known for both his defensive and attacking capabilities, managed an eye-catching five goals and five assists during 2018/2019 enjoying playing with some new expensive attacking players and certainly flexing his so-called old muscles going forward.

The number 16 also weighed in with an average of 85.3% pass success playing mostly alongside Declan Rice in the centre of the pitch, precision as ever from the club captain.

One little bit of evidence that an aspect of Noble’s game is starting to fade ever so slightly can be found in his 0.7 key passes per game, suggesting that he’s not quite as creative as he used to be on a regular basis – he made 1.4 per appearance in the 2015/16 campaign, for example.

However, the boyhood Hammer comes roaring back with a superb average of 1.5 tackles per encounter, displaying that he hasn’t lost his bite in protecting the defence.

Overall, these figures tell us that Noble is far from ready to give up playing every weekend and that the Irons must wait to introduce a long-term partner for Rice, for the time being.

Liverpool transfer roundup: No move for Ligue 1 star, young duo could depart

[ad_pod ]

The dust continues to settle on what has been a fantastic season for Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, but their attention will soon turn to the upcoming campaign as they look to continue on from the past term’s successes. In terms of the transfer market, there are likely to be more outgoings than incomings, although one or two may be added to improve the squad even further. Here’s a look at the latest gossip involving the Merseysiders…

No move for Pepe

According to the Liverpool Echo, one of those potential new arrivals will not be Lille’s Nicolas Pepe. The 22-year-old Ivorian has had a fantastic campaign with the Ligue 1 side, notching up 22 goals and 11 assists, and will likely be on the move this summer. RMC Sport’s Mohamed Bouhafsi had reported that Liverpool were interested in the player, but the Echo has rebuffed those claims, saying the player is not under consideration.

German stay for Grujic?

Serbian midfielder Marko Grujic may be on this way to the Bundesliga, according to Goal.com. The former Red Star Belgrade player spent the past season on loan at Hertha Berlin, and the side from the German capital are looking to bring him in on a permanent basis. However, Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen are also interested in Grujic, who is valued at £25m by the Anfield club.

Wilson eyed by Bundesliga

Harry Wilson could be following Grujic out of the door this summer, according to the Daily Mirror. Following a successful season with Derby County in the Championship, the Reds are prepared to let the 21-year-old leave for £21m. Some of the interest is coming from abroad, with Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig keeping an eye on the Welshman, but Leicester and Aston Villa are also interested alongside Valencia and Getafe.

West Ham hand Joe Powell a new contract ahead of huge season

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United have handed Joe Powell a new contract, the club have confirmed.

What’s the word?

The attacking midfielder has extended his stay at the club by one year following a promising 2018-19 season.

A versatile player, the 20-year-old can play on both wings and through the middle and enjoyed a loan spell at Northampton Town this term.

He played 10 times in League Two, scoring twice and laying on one assist, and has clearly outgrown Premier League 2 level; he played 12 times and scored seven goals while adding six assists.

Powell was also on the bench for the Hammers’ 1-1 draw with Leicester City in the Premier League and made his first-team debut in the EFL Cup thumping of Macclesfield Town, laying on two assists in a 28-minute cameo in the 8-0 win.

And the youngster is hopeful of adding to those appearances this term, telling the club’s website: “I’m delighted as I’ve got another year now to try and prove myself and hopefully this is the one where I push on into the first-team squad.

“I can’t wait for pre-season to start now and hopefully I can have a much better season than I did last year, then West Ham will want me to stay for the long term.”

First-team beckoning?

It is easy to latch onto youngsters coming through the academy at West Ham and tip them to make a breakthrough.

But Powell looks to be set for much more involvement next season.

He is perhaps right to claim he simply has another year to prove himself, but he has the natural ability to feature, particularly with Mark Noble approaching the twilight of his career and Jack Wilshere notably injury-prone.

Powell has been with the club since the age of eight and his longevity is likely to be rewarded next term.

And if he makes a first-team spot his own, he could end up saving the Irons a fair few million in the process.

Either way it’s a huge make-or-break season for the promising youngster.

He’d be good: Wolves fans react to Domagoj Vida transfer report

[ad_pod ]

Wolves have had issues in defence recently but they could be about to attempt to solve them by renewing their early season interest in Croatian defender Domagoj Vida.

This is according to Turkish outlet Sporx who claim the Midlands side are keen on the no-nonsense centre back.

The report sparked reaction from the Molineux faithful on Twitter who took to the social media platform to share their thoughts on a possible deal for the player.

There was a mixed response as one fan laughed at the fact another rumour regarding the 29-year-old had resurfaced. However, they did state they’d love Wolves to sign him.

Another individual tweeted that his price tag seemed a bit steep considering his age. A further fan joked that the Croat, who sports an interesting hairstyle, needed a trim.

Vida was one of the stars of the World Cup as Croatia reached the final in Russia last summer and could be the experienced central defender Nuno Santo is looking for.

He’s currently rated at £9m according to Transfermarkt but Sporx states that he would likely cost around €15m (£12.95m).

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Javi Gracia says Doucoure and Capoue are the best midfielders in the country

[ad_pod ]

Watford meet Wolves at Wembley this weekend, where they will be hoping to dominate the midfield in the manner they did when the two sides met in October.

Abdoulaye Doucoure and Etienne Capoue smothered Wolves’ own pairing of European countrymen with ease and since then Nuno Espirito Santo has often opted to include some physical support for Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in the form of Leander Dendoncker.

That performance was far from a one off – the Hornets’ French duo have gone on to become one of the most frightening pairings in the league, and Javi Gracia thinks they are at the pinnacle.

Speaking ahead of the FA Cup semi-final clash, the Spaniard said:

“I said it a long time ago, for me Capoue and Doucouré are the best midfielders in this league. They have a good balance, score goals, they cover a lot of space, they help defending, they help attacking, are very organised and are clever. I think both are playing at a very high level.”

High praise indeed, although something Paul Pogba, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and co may have something to say about. There is no mistaking, though, the incredible displays registered by Gracia’s giants – they stop attacks with ease, pass coolly and accurately, cover every blade of grass on the pitch and score goals too.

Tottenham should listen to Spurs fans and keep Fernando Llorente amid exit report

[ad_pod ]

According to a report in The Guardian, Tottenham Hotspur striker Fernando Llorente looks likely to leave the club when his contract expires in the summer, but the club should actually listen to what some fans are saying in this case and keep him.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Guardian report that big changes could be afoot for the north London outfit come the end of the season, following two successive transfer windows without signing a new player.

The report states that Spurs have plenty of potential new players on their radar, which means that some current individuals could be on their way.

The Guardian reports that 34-year-old Llorente is likely to be one of those when his deal is up, and if you asked supporters a few months ago whether they wanted the Spaniard to stay it might have been a different opinion to the one some have now.

Give him another 12 months

The problem for Tottenham is that if they do allow the tall centre-forward to go, they are tasked with finding a striker who will be happy to settle for being Harry Kane’s back-up.

Find out why not a single Spurs fan will miss Wembley in the video below…

Llorente is at an age where he is clearly happy to do that as long as he gets his fair share of minutes here and there, and he has often stepped up – especially in 2019 – with seven goals and four assists in 24 outings in all competitions.

The former Swansea City man was particularly impressive when Kane was absent through injury, enjoying a run of one goal and three assists in three successive Premier League appearances from the end of January and into February.

The impact he made then – as well as in other games – seem to have convinced the following Spurs supporters that Mauricio Pochettino should look to keep him ahead of next season, and they have got a point because he can be a real handful from the substitutes’ bench and appears to have a great attitude.
