ScorecardFile photo – Piyush Chawla scored 73 and followed up with a five-wicket haul•BCCIA five-wicket haul from Piyush Chawla brightened Uttar Pradesh’s hopes of beating Railways and dragging themselves off the bottom of the group table. Chawla, who had added 20 runs to his overnight 53 to help UP narrow their first-innings deficit to 53, ran through Railways with his legspin to help bowl them out for 189 in their second innings. Chasing 243, UP’s openers saw out the last 10 overs of the day and added an unbroken 25.Having taken the last three UP wickets for 26 runs in the morning, with Ranjit Mali picking up a five-for, Railways made a strong start to their second innings, with their openers adding 63. Wickets fell steadily, thereafter, and even though five of their batsmen went past 20, their top score was Anustup Majumdar’s 40. At 125 for 3, Railways were still in a position to set UP a 300-plus target, but they fell well short of that, and lost their last seven wickets for 64 runs.
ScorecardA half-century from Swapnil Singh steered Baroda out of trouble and helped them set Tamil Nadu a 200-plus target at the Moti Bagh Stadium. Swapnil walked in with Baroda 100 for 6, their lead a mere 61 at that stage, and built fighting stands with the lower order before he was last out for 83. Chasing 207, Tamil Nadu lost Abhinav Mukund after an opening stand of 38, and were 51 for 1 at stumps with M Vijay batting on 26.Tamil Nadu could go through to the quarterfinals even if they lose, depending on other results, but Baroda will almost certainly have to win to go through, given the likelihood of Mumbai, MP and Railways going past their points total were they to lose.Tamil Nadu’s seam attack began the morning with a flurry of wickets, removing three Baroda batsmen for the addition of 27 runs to their overnight 73 for 3. Swapnil added 58 with captain Aditya Waghmode for the seventh wicket, 30 with Gagandeep Singh for the ninth wicket and 46 with Sagar Mangalorkar for the final wicket before he became L Balaji’s third victim. Swapnil’s 178-ball innings contained 10 fours and a six.
ScorecardA five-wicket haul from Yogesh Rawat helped Madhya Pradesh bowl Bengal out for 219 and enforce the follow-on in Indore. Bengal, who conceded a 295-run first-innings lead, made a strong start to their second innings, with their openers Abhishek Das and Abhimanyu Easwaran putting on 91. MP dismissed Easwaran close to stumps but the debutant Das was still at the crease, batting on 69 off 119 balls, having struck seven fours and three sixes. With him was Sudip Chatterjee, the first-innings half-centurion.Chatterjee hadn’t added to his overnight 58 when Rawat had him lbw in the second over of the morning. Bengal lost four more wickets in quick time and were 146 for 8 before Amit Banerjee stitched useful partnerships with Veer Pratap Singh and Ashok Dinda to drag their score past 200. Rawat, playing his fifth first-class game, picked up his second five-wicket haul with his medium-pace.

'I was ready to bat another 50 overs' – Rohit Sharma

After his record-breaking innings, Rohit Sharma has said he feels it’s important “to think” about an innings while compiling it, and that’s what he did at Eden Gardens

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Nov-2014After becoming the first batsman in history to record two ODI double-centuries, and breaking the record for the highest score in the format, Rohit Sharma said he felt it was important “to think” about an innings while compiling it. And that’s what he did at Eden Gardens, he said.”It’s important to look at the team score, because that’s how you will build your innings, you need to know where your team stands,” Rohit said, after his 264 off 173 balls powered India to 404 for 5 against Sri Lanka. “It’s important to know what the score is and how many overs have been bowled, and how many overs of each bowler are left. I think it’s very important to think when you’re batting, and that’s what I did.”Rohit was playing his first match for India in two and a half months, having been sidelined by a finger injury and a shoulder strain. He had shown signs of hitting the top form straightaway in his return to competitive cricket – the warm-up game in Mumbai against the Sri Lankans before this series – when he scored 142 off 111 balls. After that break, Rohit joked, he was relieved to get time in the middle. “After a few months’ break, so I’m not really tired, I was ready to bat another 50 overs,” he said, adding that the pitch made it necessary for him to not throw away his start.”But yeah, jokes apart, I was determined and dedicated to getting a big one. Once I got to fifty, I knew that I had to convert, because it was a good batting wicket. The scores here, even 300-350, are easily chaseable. We wanted to get a big score and that made me stay there as long as possible.”Getting going, he said, was not the easiest, but he was determined to fight it out. “The initial part, the first 10-15 overs were not easy. Coming back from an injury, playing after two months, I was feeling a little out of place. The free-flowing strokes were not coming as naturally as it comes to me, but I wanted to get stuck in the middle and that required a lot of dedication and determination.”I kept telling myself that no matter what, how many balls I play, I need to stay there because I know I can [make up the scoring rate] any time. That was the idea.”Luckily the quickfire 30 [28 off 24] from Ajinkya Rahane helped me to settle down. It helped me take my time, because after an injury coming and giving it away was not the idea. I just wanted to make it count.”Rohit was out off the final delivery of India’s innings, and that gave him great pleasure, he said. “The fact that I went on to play 50 overs, that was really pleasing to me because I’ve been working on it, to bat as long as possible. So finally to do that was really good.”Did he know when he broke the record 219 scored by Virender Sehwag then? “I knew he got 219 because when I scored 209 the last time, someone said I had missed the world record by 10 runs. But while batting I was not looking at that, which is why you must have seen on TV also, I was a little surprised when I saw my team-mates standing and giving me an ovation from the dressing room. I was a little surprised as to what happened, but then I realised I must have surpassed the 219.”When asked if he would go after a triple-hundred next, he laughed, saying: “I will try my best to get there, but as of now I will take 264.”And 264 should be enough to top the charts in ODI cricket for a long time, stand-in India captain Virat Kohli said at the post-match presentation. “Today is the kind of day I can tell my kids I was there,” Kohli said. “I don’t think this record is getting broken anytime soon.”This was Rohit’s first ODI at Eden Gardens, and he pointed out that it seemed to be his lucky ground. “Very special ground to me, I made my Ranji Trophy debut here, my Test match debut here [and] got a 100, got a hundred in IPL as well, and now this. A lot of memories here, which will remain close to me, and this one was really special.” The Cricket Association of Bengal, which was celebrating 150 years of Eden Gardens, agreed that it was really special, announcing a cash award of Rs 2.64 lakh (US$ 4300 approx) for Rohit after the game.

'Childish' behaviour won't be tolerated – Mangongo

Zimbabwe coach Stephen Mangongo has denied excessive heavy handedness in the suspension of Tinashe Panyangara from the national squad

“We are not going to be missing Dale Steyn,” Stephen Mangongo on Tinashe Panyangara•AFP

Zimbabwe coach Stephen Mangongo has denied excessive heavy handedness in the suspension of Tinashe Panyangara from the national squad. Panyangara will not feature in the remainder of the triangular series against Australia and South Africa after what ZC’s press release described as “indiscipline” and what Mangongo explained as being “unacceptable by any stretch of the imagination.”Panyangara’s crime was sharing a video with his team-mates via WhatsApp of Mitchell Johnson battering England with a barrage of short balls .”In any sport, to post a video of the opposition annihilating another team will not be tolerated. I was perplexed that a senior bowler behaved in such a childish manner,” Mangongo told ESPNcricinfo. “On the eve of such a serious match, you don’t do that.”Zimbabwe’s batsmen have been concerned with the reputation of opposition bowlers from the start of their incoming tours this winter. Some were concerned about whether Dale Steyn would play for South Africa during the one-off Test. They had heard that the speedster may be rested and were hopeful they would not have face him. Steyn played and claimed a five-for but Zimbabwe’s batsmen acquitted themselves fairly well against him. However, during the opening game of the tri-series on Monday, Zimbabwe’s batsmen were hesitant to put bat to ball if it came out of Johnson’s hand. Johnson conceded seven runs in six overs along with striking Elton Chigumbura on the helmet in the dying stages of the matches. Mangongo was concerned Panyangara’s sharing of the video contributed to Zimbabwe’s apprehension.Mangongo said he was “not making an example of Panyangara, just taking action where it needed to be taken” and that Panyangara had “not been banned. After the tri-series, he will be back and that’s it.” Zimbabwe’s next assignment is against Bangladesh in October and Panyangara is currently training with the A side in preparation for that. Before that, Zimbabwe have at least three more matches in the ongoing series but will have to do without Panyangara, their most experienced frontline bowler. But Mangongo did not see Panyangara’s unavailability as a decisive factor.”We have eight other bowlers so I am not worried about who comes in or who goes out; we have heavy competition in the bowling department,” he said. “There are not vast differences between the bowlers we have. We are not going to be missing Dale Steyn. Tinashe conceded more runs in Harare than he did in Bulawayo.”While some of the bowlers Mangongo referred to are already in the XI, the other options to replace Panyangara are uncapped Cuthburt Musoko, teenager Luke Jongwe, Neville Madziva, who made his debut last week or Shingi Masakadza and Brian Vitori, who are both struggling for form. Even that reality does not bother Mangongo. “We are a work in progress and we are playing against the big operators in world cricket. We are determined to improve so that is what we are working on,” he said. “And we are working very hard.”Zimbabwe had a rest day on Tuesday but four members of the squad reported to practice, which Mangongo took as a sign of their commitment. “Brendan Taylor was at the head of that group so that was pleasing to see,” Mangongo said. “Everybody is working hard and trying to improve. We cannot fold our arms and do nothing; if we do that, we are not doing our jobs.”Mangongo’s sunshine outlook is overshadowed by the mood in the team camp. Insiders have revealed morale is floundering and the unhappiness with Mangongo’s strict methods growing. “He is abusing his power beyond comprehension,” an insider said. “There is every chance the players will protest at some stage but for now, they are just waiting to see whether anything will change.”Apart from Panyangara’s suspension, Mangongo has also enforced strict disciplinary measures including a curfew and shown no mercy to underperforming players, even stalwarts. Taylor was dropped for the final match against South Africa after scoring just 20 runs in the previous two games while Vusi Sibanda has been put on the sidelines twice in the last month. “Nobody is safe” is Mangongo’s mantra and this time, it was Panyangara’s turn to learn that.

Middlesex seek to build Lord's fortress

If you want to be a contender for the Championship title then becoming unbeatable at home is a good place to start. Middlesex will hoipe to underline that against Lancashire on the final day

If you want to be a contender for the Championship title then becoming unbeatable at home is a good place to start. Middlesex have begun the season in such a vein and have a good chance to make it three wins from three at Lord’s with an excellent forecast for the final day. Then they will just need to figure out how to not implode on the road.Their advance on the third day was frustrated by heavy showers, but they made good use of what was available to them by scoring 184 runs in 55 overs before declaring with a lead of 193. They had hoped for a decent-length session at Lancashire’s top order, but rain trimmed it to a 10-over burst as the ground was bathed in even sunshine. It was enough time, however, for them to remove Luis Reece, the left hander who has struggled this season, when he was caught on the back foot against Tim Murtagh. Steven Finn was promoted to the new-ball in this innings and looked in better rhythm during his five-over spell which included an edge off Paul Horton which may have carried low to third slip but which was not held.Quite how many players Middlesex provide for England this summer is still up in the air, but Eoin Morgan, key to the limited-overs set-up, reached a significant milestone, with his first Championship hundred since 2009 – although since then he has only played 20 matches – before becoming the second batsman caught down the leg side in the innings. It was a definite nudge to the England selectors if not quite a forceful push. His technique (barring the occasional flirt outside off) did appear tighter than has previously been the case.Lancashire’s bowling during a truncated morning session was probing, as it was with the first new ball before they faded yesterday. Glen Chapple had a touch more zip about him and Hogg continued his excellent return to the Championship line-up.They deserved the rewards which came their way after lunch. Hogg removed Neil Dexter, who was bowled trying to pull to end a stand of 126, and had Joe Denly caught behind as he pushed forward. That made it four single-figure scores for Denly this season.Middlesex were threatening to fall away with a lead of under a hundred, but a robust partnership of 124 in 33 overs between John Simpson and Ollie Rayner soon reasserted their authority. Rayner is one the spinners-who-bat to attract attention from the England selectors and he was on the Lions tour to Sri Lanka earlier this season, but he remains some way down the pecking order for further elevation. He has just two wickets so far this season – albeit in conditions that have not favoured his art form – but lower-order runs is that vital second string until a spinner becomes more of a matchwinner later in the summer.Still, while Middlesex will expect their seamers to do most of the work to bowl Lancashire out a second time, if the forecast is as warm and sunny as it promises to be he could yet have more work on the final day.

Abelão ainda fez outras avaliações do rendimento do Flamengo no Maracanã diante do Madureira.

Injured Morkel out, Morris picked as replacement

Morne Morkel, the South Africa fast bowler, has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to a quad strain, and will be replaced by Chris Morris

Firdose Moonda07-Jun-2013South Africa’s Champions Trophy hopes have suffered another setback, with Morne Morkel ruled out of the tournament with a quad strain. Allrounder Chris Morris has been announced as Morkel’s replacement and approved by the ICC’s event technical committee*. ESPNcricinfo understands that Morris will join the squad in Birmingham on Saturday.Morris is uncapped in ODIs for South Africa but played two Twenty20 internationals last season. He opens the bowling and can reach speeds into the mid 140s. He has just completed his first IPL, in which he was one of the standout players for Chennai Super Kings with 15 wickets at 26.73. He is also a handy lower-order batsman.Morkel is the fourth big-name player to become unavailable for South Africa after Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and Dale Steyn, although there is hope Steyn will return. Morkel bowled 6.5 overs during South Africa’s opening match against India before he left the field in obvious discomfort. He was taken for an MRI scan following the team’s defeat which revealed a Grade 1 injury that is more serious than it initially looked.”There is a tear in the layer covering the muscle which means the recovery time will be longer than we thought. He will take at least three weeks to recover,” Mohammed Moosajee, South Africa’s team manager who is also a medical doctor, explained. That leaves South Africa’s pace stocks severely depleted, especially as Steyn is still nursing a side strain. Steyn picked up the niggle during South Africa’s warm-up match against Pakistan at The Oval on Monday. At the time Moosajee said he would need five to seven days to recover, a period that ends in time for South Africa’s next match against Pakistan at Edgbaston. That does not mean Steyn is a guaranteed starter, though. “Dale is a work in a progress as far as recovery is concerned. We can only get him to start bowling once he is symptom free,” Moosajee said. “It’s a challenge, because if we allow him to bowl and the injury is aggravated, we will be back to square one. The physiotherapist is working hard on him and taking it day by day. It’s a wait and see thing.” More information on Steyn’s condition will be known when the squad trains on Saturday. Both Morkel and Steyn played in the IPL but Moosajee did not want to lay all the blame on that competition for the problems South Africa are experiencing. “There is a huge volume of cricket for guys who play across all formats. While I can’t blame the IPL, at the same time, there is no guarantee that the volume of cricket is not leading to this.”From a South African perspective, for both your marquee fast bowlers to be ruled out of a major tournament… I guess it could have happened at any time. Dale and Morne are our premier bowlers and we want them to play but I’d like to believe we have become a very resilient team. We’re hoping other guys have a chance to shine.”Morris was preferred over Wayne Parnell, who played four games in the IPL for Pune Warriors and has been on the fringes of the South Africa squad in recent months, and Marchant de Lange, who made a return to cricket late in the 2012-13 season after recovering from stress fractures. He also beat competition from a man former players such as Michael Vaughan and Pat Symcox are pleading for: Vernon Philander. After Tsotsobe and Kleinveldt conceded heavily against India and looked tactically out of sorts, Philander’s lengths were spoken of as being missed. However, the Test ace is not considered part of South Africa’s one-day plans. He has represented them in the fifty-overs format eight times, with his last appearance in January 2012. Philander is usually reserved for Test cricket only and injuries have also hampered his progress in the one-day format.*11.30GMT, June 7: This article has been updated after Morne Morkel’s replacement was approved by the ICC
