Liverpool could sign a "monster" £34m Leny Yoro alternative

Liverpool supporters rejoiced at seeing new head coach Arne Slot sit down and conduct his first interview after replacing Jurgen Klopp at the helm, with a particular piece of information gleaned.

Indeed, Slot revealed that he has been in near-daily contact with Anfield's sporting director, Richard Hughes, to discuss transfer strategies and the best players to boost the functionality of the Dutchman's possession-centric, heavy-pressing system.

Feyenoord manager Arne Slot

With Joel Matip now gone after his contract expired this month, signing a centre-back is arguably the most pressing concern, with sights indeed set on some exciting targets.

Liverpool lining up new defender

David Ornstein stirred up some excitement when revealing last week that Liverpool – alongside Manchester United – are actively pursuing precocious defender Leny Yoro, though with the acceptance that Real Madrid's rival interest makes the Santiago Bernabeu the 18-year-old's optimum location.

FSG understand that there's a good chance Yoro won't end up at Anfield and thus are searching for alternatives, with The Athletic reporting this week that Liverpool are among the Premier League clubs to have enquired about Bologna's Riccardo Calafiori.

Bologna are determined to keep the versatile 22-year-old and can offer Champions League football next season, but Liverpool's pedigree holds sway and a deal could be completed for €40m (£34m) – a fee that could prove to be a bargain down the line.

Riccardo Calafiori's 23/24 season in numbers

Liverpool bosses will no doubt have one eye fixed on Italy's Euro 2024 fixture against Spain tonight, eager to see how Calafiori performs against ostensible title challengers after a commanding, dynamic display against Albania in the opener, instrumental in the 2-1 victory.

Calafiori only made his Italy debut three weeks ago but he has been called up to Luciano Spalletti's squad on merit. Bologna enjoyed an incredible 2023/24 campaign, qualifying for the Champions League after finishing fifth, opening the door to Europe's elite club competition after Serie A was awarded an extra spot via the UEFA coefficient rankings.

As per Sofascore, the £12k-per-week centre-half featured 30 times – keeping ten clean sheets – in the Italian top flight last season, scoring two goals, providing five assists, completing 90% of his passes and averaging 1.7 interceptions, 1.6 tackles, 2.5 clearances and 6.5 ball recoveries per game.

Given that Bologna only conceded 32 goals in Serie A last term (the third-best tally in the division), his skill set clearly played an important role.

Competent at left-back too, Calafiori would be an excellent addition to a Liverpool team in transition, and while he doesn't quite carry the prodigious air of Yoro, his modern-suited, ball-focussed style of play could actually make him an ideal player under Slot.

Why Riccardo Calafiori could be perfect for Arne Slot

Athleticism and energy are fundamentals for Calafiori's success – by his own admission, Manchester City and England centre-back John Stones is his most stylistically similar player.

Crisp in possession, creative on the ball and effective in driving it forward, the Italian differs from Yoro, who has innate maturity and exceptional reading of the game – a bit like Virgil van Dijk – but is more languid and straightforward in his play.

That, of course, is not a bad thing. Talent scout Jacek Kulig has declared the young Frenchman to be "world-class material" – corroborated by the vested interest of Real Madrid, but for Slot's expressive style of football, Calafiori would dovetail right into the backline.

Slot's philosophy is characterised by aggressive, front-footed attacking football, not too dissimilar to that of Klopp, his predecessor, but he has admitted that he's somewhat more possession-centric, with a tactical approach drawing parallels to Manchester City's brand under Pep Guardiola.

There's also an element of completeness to his game. Analyst Ben Mattinson has hailed the defender an "aerial monster", and indeed he won 71% of his aerial battles in Serie A last season, though he only stands at 6 feet tall.

Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori

He's certainly not diminutive but he would be the shortest of Liverpool's central defenders – Van Dijk is 6 foot 3, Ibrahima Konate 6 foot 4 while the 21-year-old Jarell Quansah is a veritable giant at 6 foot 5.

But he's shaping into an all-action defender with elite passing acumen and the fitness quality to succeed. Slot's hyper-energised Feyenoord team undoubtedly played a defining role in convincing Michael Edwards and Co to make the appointment, with the pace and power only deepening the argument for Calafiori's inclusion.

While Liverpool have three talented central defenders in the fold, Calafiori could be the final piece of the puzzle to ensure that the structural transition runs without a hitch.

However, with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur among the Premier League rivals to have been credited with an interest in recent months, FSG might need to move fast, especially with his stock likely to rise after his international escapades this summer.

No entanto, o time terá vários desfalques importantes em meio à suspensões e lesões.

– Remo – Lisca elogiou a comissão técnica do adversário do Vasco nesta sexta-feira.

Arsenal can supercharge Saka by signing "exceptional" £55m "goalscorer"

The Premier League season finally came to an end on Sunday, and while Arsenal put in another brilliant showing and pushed Manchester City all the way to the end, it'll be another summer of working out what they need to do to take that next step.

It would be hard to find too many holes in Mikel Arteta's current side. After all, they produced the best defence and second-best attack in the league this season, but something they do lack is a prolific number nine.

Arsenal right winger Bukayo Saka

However, based on recent reports, that could be about to change, and Bukayo Saka could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of this potential deal.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from the Standard's Simon Collings, Edu's 'key priority' this summer is a new forward, and one of the main targets is RB Leipzig's Benjamin Šeško.

Over the last week or so, the Slovenian's name has been constantly touted for a move to North London, with reports from Germany, via Collings, suggesting his new release clause is around £55m.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, there are two issues.

First, the clause is set to expire at the end of June, and second, many other sides, including Manchester United and Chelsea, are also interested in the striker.

It might be tough to secure a deal for the 20-year-old forward with so many other clubs interested, but if Arsenal can get it done before his £55m price tag increases, it would be excellent business.

Benjamin Sesko

How Šeško can supercharge Saka

So, with Šeško having only started one game in his career in a position other than striker – it was left-wing – he would only join Arsenal to play up top. This means his direct competition would be Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz, and when it comes to goalscoring, he has them both beaten.

In his 42 games this season, the Radeče-born dynamo scored 18 goals and provided two assists, while the former Manchester City star scored eight goals and provided eight assists in 36 games, and the German found the back of the net 14 times and provided seven assists in 51 games.

However, the "exceptional" prospect, as described by data analyst Ben Mattinson, has his potential competition beat not just in goals and assists; when looking at the trio's striker-relevant underlying numbers, he once again comes out on top.

For example, the 6 foot 5 marksman produces a higher non-penalty expected goals figure, scores more non-penalty goals, has a higher percentage of his shots on target, takes more shots on target, converts his on-target shots more often and even though he takes fewer overall shots than Jesus, he has a better conversion rate there as well, all per 90.

Overall, it's hard to deny that the former Salzburg gem is a "real goalscorer", as Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell put it, which is precisely how he would help supercharge Saka's assist figures.

In his 35 league appearances this season, the Hale End superstar racked up a seriously impressive haul of 16 goals and nine assists, but he should have had more.

11.33

According to Understat's expected assist figure, he should have had at least two more, or 11.33 to be exact – they have not recorded his assist for Gabriel's goal against Crystal Palace.

So, had the Englishman had a more accomplished out-and-out striker in the centre as opposed to the midfielder-come-forward in Havertz and the notoriously profligate Jesus, who has underperformed his expected goals by over three, he would have reached a genuine world-class return of 27 goals and assists in the league alone.

Ultimately, while the forwards at Arteta's disposal this season have been impressive, neither one has shown themselves to be a killer in front of goal in the same way Sesko has.

So, if Arsenal can activate the Slovenian's release clause before it expires, they may well have the perfect number nine to help their wide players explode next season.

Newcastle could play "spectacular football" by appointing Howe successor

Newcastle United have gone through lots of changes since the Saudi PIF took over in October 2021. They have spent millions of pounds, £379.6m to be exact, according to Football Transfers, and have been transformed into a side in European contention by manager Eddie Howe.

Under Howe, they have made some major signings, which include Alexander Isak for £60m from Real Sociedad, Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon for £40m, and Anthony Gordon from Premier League rivals Everton for £45m.

Howe’s achievements in getting his side to a Carabao Cup final, which they lost against Manchester United, and getting Newcastle into the Champions League for the first time in 20 years are two of his best during his time at the club.

However, the 2023/24 season has not gone to plan for the Magpies. Newcastle crashed out of the Champions League at the group stage, are 13 points off the top four in the Premier League this season, and seem unlikely to qualify for the competition again this season.

With that being the case, there are a few whispers of Newcastle potentially looking to bring in a new manager next season. One of the names on their rumoured shortlist is an old Premier League manager, whose most recent club was Lazio.

Newcastle’s manager target

The manager in question here is former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, who left Lazio on 13 March this year. He has also spent time as Juventus manager since leaving Stamford Bridge and is now a rumoured target for Newcastle.

According to a report from Italian outlet Il Messaggero earlier this week, Sarri’s agent Frank Trimboli has 'brought him offers' from Newcastle, although he has not responded to that. The report then goes on to say that West Ham United are also interested in appointing Sarri at the end of the season.

Lazio manager Maurizio Sarri

Sarri did not achieve any domestic success with Chelsea but did win the Europa League in 2018/19, beating Arsenal 4-1 in the final at the Baku National Stadium. However, Sarri is said to 'regret it when he left Chelsea', as per the report, intending to return to England, and perhaps take over at Newcastle if the rumours are to be believed.

How Sarri could benefit Newcastle

Sarri could well be the manager to take over from Howe and take Newcastle to the next level. Back in 2017 in an interview with Goal.com, legendary manager Arrigo Sacchi hailed Sarri’s famed 4-3-3 system because it “produces spectacular football”.

The main principle of Sarri’s football is to play a possession-based yet attacking style of play, with the 'regista' – or midfield controller – the key player to the entire system. At Chelsea, the midfielder asked to play as a regista under Sarri was Jorginho. The Italian was superb when pulling the strings of his side in possession from a deeper role, screening the back four whilst out of possession.

At Newcastle, this could be a role Bruno Guimaraes operates in, and although this could limit the time he spends in the final third, it is one he would perform to a tee. According to Fbref, his 7.50 progressive passes per 90 minutes ranks him in the top 9%, something that would be vital should he act as a regista under Sarri.

Sarri also likes his teams to be explosive in attack on the left-hand side, which is where the likes of Gordon could thrive. At Chelsea, Eden Hazard was the man with that responsibility, able to drive into the penalty box and have the support of an overlapping fullback. Gordon’s pace and ability to dribble in tight areas could work well in this instance, and Tino Livramento or Lewis Hall playing at left-back would be an excellent option to pair with him.

Should they appoint Sarri, Newcastle might have to recruit at centre-back. One issue with Sarri-ball is the fact that there can be lots of space behind the defence, and his side can be liable to being caught in transition. Newcastle might have to sign more athletic defensive options to ensure they are better set to prevent counterattacks.

Should Newcastle decide to appoint Sarri, they certainly have some profiles who would fit his system well. Perhaps he can be the manager who will help them kick on and begin to push for major honours.

West Brom could sign a "fantastic" replacement for Alex Mowatt

West Bromwich Albion look to be wobbling their way to a playoff spot being secured, the Championship promotion hopefuls picking up just one win in their last six league matches after crashing to a 2-1 defeat at Leicester City at the weekend.

Carlos Corberan's men won't be too alarmed, however, believing they will have enough to get over the line to then compete in the lottery of the playoffs.

Looking more long-term, the Baggies know they will also need to tie a number of their main stars to extended deals this summer with the likes of Cedric Kipre and Alex Mowatt nearing towards the end of their current deals worryingly.

Jayson Molumby

West Brom might well view this rumoured transfer target as a long-term replacement for Mowatt if the former Leeds United man does leave this summer or sometime in the future, with the 20-year-old in question tipped to become even more of a star as he grows.

West Brom transfer news

The West Midlands outfit are reportedly keen on adding Huddersfield Town midfielder Brahima Diarra to their roster in the summer, but West Brom are not a lone suitor going after the Terriers starlet's services.

The likes of Leicester and Hull City in the Championship are also rumoured to be going after Diarra with a view to getting a bargain deal owing to his contract running out soon, alongside RB Salzburg being interested from Austria.

It's been a breakout campaign for the 20-year-old, seen in this clip against the Foxes earlier in the season where Diarra shone, who could be due a move to a higher-up club subsequently.

Corberan will hope his prior connections to Diarra, having overseen his development in West Yorkshire during his spell as Terriers manager, can seal a deal in West Brom's favour who will need more bodies in midfield if Mowatt does walk away from the club soon.

Brahima Diarra as Mowatt's replacement

Diarra hasn't quite been a regular first-teamer at the John Smith's Stadium this season but has shown in flashes when starting why clubs such as West Brom are eyeing up a move.

From 23 appearances this campaign, the Mali U23 international has tallied up two assists with his last coming against Hull City in February in league action.

He's got some way to go to be as impactful as Mowatt has been for the Baggies this season, with the 29-year-old picking up five assists in the Championship and helping himself to a solitary strike.

Known for scoring pearlers throughout his lengthy stay in West Midlands to date – firing in five strikes from 80 games including this screamer away at Cardiff City in 2022 – losing a player of Mowatt's quality in the summer for nothing would be a bit of a disaster for Corberan's men.

The deal for Diarra could be long-term thinking to try and solve that situation therefore, but the 20-year-old won't be able to fill the gap left behind by the experienced midfielder immediately.

In an ideal world, Corberan and Co will end up sealing a deal for Diarra – who was described as a "fantastic" talent by former Baggies player Carlton Palmer recently – to then utilise him as Mowatt's understudy, before allowing the youngster to thrive at first-team level further down the line.

West Brom could well have to thrust Diarra into the senior fold sooner than anticipated if a deal goes through and Mowatt does exit the Hawthorns, hoping the midfielder can go on to be another raw gem that excels in the first-team alongside a previously untested Tom Fellows.

Alex Carey 'nipping at the heels' of Tim Paine – Adam Gilchrist

The former wicketkeeper, who feels Paine’s future as Test captain is in his own hands, lauded him for helping reshape the team after the ball-tampering scandal

Andrew McGlashan in Perth11-Dec-2019

Alex Carey is “nipping at the heels” of Tim Paine but the future of Australia’s Test captain remains in his own hands, according to Adam Gilchrist. It is not beyond the realms that the New Zealand series, which starts in Perth on Thursday, marks Paine’s last home internationals. After the Sydney Test in early January, Australia’s next assignment is a two-match series in Bangladesh in June before the next home summer.Steven Smith’s leadership ban will be completed at the end of March which means he will be eligible for a return to captaincy, and Gilchrist picked out him and Pat Cummins as potential options to replace Paine. The upturn in Australia’s Test form this year has cemented Paine’s position and it appears unlikely he will be pushed out, but having turned 35 a few days ago there may also come a time when he feels it is time to move on.From a batting point of view, Carey has made 143 and 73 in his last two Sheffield Shield outings and is the natural successor to Paine. It is a position Gilchrist has first-hand experience of, having been the man who replaced Ian Healy in 1999.”I reckon while ever he is in the team he should be captain,” Gilchrist, who is a commentator, said. “And then let’s see after these three Tests – that is the summer for him. See how he feels at the end of this summer. I feel it was more of a light-hearted comment when he said it might be his last summer. But like all players that are getting to that age bracket, it’s almost a summer-by-summer analysis.”It’s almost like deja vu – not for him, but for me – when you’ve got a guy like Alex Carey nipping at his heels. He’s starting to show some really promising signs of consistency now in his Sheffield Shield cricket. With his overall game and where the attention gets drawn to is his run-scoring. His wicketkeeping seems to be extremely consistent. As is Paine’s. But Carey is now starting to really accumulate important runs in first-class cricket, so that is going to really put pressure on him.”If he is playing next summer, Paine should be captain of the Australian cricket team. But we will have to see at the end of the summer if he is still in there – whether it’s his own personal judgement or the selectors’. As long as he warrants a spot in the team, he can keep leading the team. I’m amazed at the way he has helped rebuild and reshape the team after the disaster of South Africa.”Tim Paine with Steven Smith at training•AFP

Though Paine’s Test average remains a modest 30.97 (he has barely been needed so far this summer with the prolific returns of Australia’s top order), Gilchrist believes he has a significant innings him should Australia need it.”Tim’s chipped in with some really important innings,” Gilchrist said. “He hasn’t got the breakthrough runs but he plays a decent role with the bat. I’d be surprised if in this series there’s not a time when we’re under pressure whether it’s a 40, 50 or a 70 that he plays his role. He’s so experienced he can fulfill that. The only time the attention is drawn to him is if someone else is breathing down his neck that they may be able to add value.”From Paine’s point of view, he said he had not given his future any more thought since the start of the international season. “In terms of competition, when you are playing for Australia as the wicketkeeper, there’s constant competition,” he said. “We are renowned for having excellent wicketkeeper-batsmen and that’s no different at the moment. As I touched on, it’s a great environment in our set-up and I’m enjoying every minute of it and will continue to do so as long as I can.”

Tottenham Hotspur were hammered 3-0 by London rivals Fulham and that created an opportunity for the Villans to extend the gap between themselves and Ange Postecoglou's side in the hunt for Champions League football.

Unfortunately, they only gained one point as they moved three clear of Spurs after Michail Antonio's first-half header was then cancelled out by Nicolo Zaniolo's second-half strike at the London Stadium.

Unai Emery

Two players – Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers – were handed their first Premier League starts of the season and one of those players, the Colombian centre-forward, failed Unai Emery's big test badly.

Morgan Rogers' stats against West Ham

The January signing from Championship side Middlesbrough did not grasp his opportunity with both hands but also did not do himself a huge disservice.

Rogers was selected to play on the left flank and tried to get himself involved in the match with 44 touches of the ball in 63 minutes on the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, the former second division starlet did complete 67% of his attempted dribbles and managed to win four physical duels throughout the game, which shows that he put himself about and worked hard to make things happen.

The 21-year-old dynamo also registered one shot on target, as he forced Alphonse Areola into a save, but failed to create a chance for his teammates.

These statistics show that Rogers was average without being terrible on the wing as he did not have a howler but did not stand out as a key performer for the Villans.

Why Jhon Duran was worse than Morgan Rogers

Duran also made his first Premier League start of the campaign, having scored two goals in 14 substitute appearances before Sunday, and let Emery down badly after the Spanish head coach placed his trust in the striker.

The Colombia international was worse than Rogers as he was completely ineffective at the top end of the pitch, which led to the manager taking him off to be replaced by Moussa Diaby – who went on to assist the equaliser – at the break.

Jhon Duran

Duran was a lightweight for the Villans out of possession as West Ham's players beat him in 80% (4/5) of their duels with the former MLS forward, which shows that he was far too easily beaten in physical contests.

The 20-year-old attacker also failed to register a single effort on goal or chance created for his teammates, along with a 0% (0/1) dribble success rate, on the ball. Whereas, Rogers had a shot on target, completed two dribbles, and won four of his duels.

These statistics show that the young marksman struggled with both sides of the game as he failed to make the most of a huge chance to showcase his quality from the start in a Premier League game and let Emery down badly.

He was worse than Rogers, who at least tried to make things happen and did win some of his physical contests, and may not get another opportunity to start in the league any time soon, based on this disappointing performance.
