Bid made: Newcastle pursuing £26m ace who’s even better than Summerville

Crysencio Summerville is a huge talent who has been on the radar of Newcastle United in the last couple of months, hardly a surprise given his excellent form from last season.

The Dutch winger registered a total of 28 goals or assists, but it wasn’t enough to secure an immediate Premier League return for Leeds United as they suffered defeat in the play-off final.

As a result, it’s all but guaranteed that Summerville will depart Elland Road ahead of the upcoming campaign, with Newcastle battling the likes of West Ham United, Chelsea and Fulham for his signature.

Any deal would cost upwards of £30m, a fair price in today’s market, but a huge risk on a player who’s previously only scored four goals in England’s top flight.

He’s not the only forward on boss Eddie Howe’s radar, with the Magpies submitting a bid to sign a star who has enjoyed huge success during the off-season.

Newcastle make £26m bid to sign attacking talent

According to Spanish sources, Newcastle have submitted a €30m (£26m) bid to sign Barcelona forward Ferran Torres this summer.

The 24-year-old has scored seven goals in his 29 LaLiga appearances this season, with his goalscoring exploits potentially able to complete the Magpies’ frontline in 2024/25.

ferran-torres-barcelona-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-vinicius-jr

Barca desperately need to raise funds this summer to help combat their current financial issues, with Howe’s side needing to take advantage and sign the former Manchester City ace.

Torres was a part of the Spain squad that won Euro 2024 this summer, making five appearances, while scoring one goal in the 1-0 victory over Albania in the group stage.

The 24-year-old has previously starred at St James’ Park, scoring a hat-trick against the Magpies during City’s 4-3 on Tyneside back in 2021, with the Spaniard a much better addition than Summerville for Howe’s side this summer.

Why Torres would be a better signing than Summerville for Newcastle

It may be a bold statement to say Torres is a better signing for Newcastle than Summerville, especially considering the fact the Leeds talent registered 19 more goals or assists last season, but the Spaniard’s stats in attacking areas could see him thrive in England once more.

When comparing the pair on FBref, it’s clear that Torres is a better option in the final third, being more clinical than the Dutchman, despite his significantly lower goal tally.

ferran-torres-barcelona-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-gabriel-martinelli

The “exceptional” Barca forward, as described by Pep Guardiola in the past, averaged a slightly higher goal per shot average last season, whilst registering more goals per 90 – having only featured for a combined 1211 minutes compared to Summerville, who managed a total of 3498.

He also produced a higher shot-on-target accuracy rate than the in-demand Leeds ace, allowing the Magpies to recruit a player who needs fewer chances to produce the goods in front of goal – a crucial feature if Howe’s side are to increase their goal tally in 2024/25.

Torres also is predominantly a right-sided attacker, whereas Summerville featured on the left in the vast majority of his appearances under Daniel Farke last season – a role he simply wouldn’t be able to dislodge Anthony Gordon from after his tally of 21 league goal contributions in 2023/24.

The Spaniard has been unfortunate in his move to the LaLiga giants, finding himself behind Lamine Yamal after the youngster’s impressive breakthrough season, with a move needed for him to regain his excellent form that saw the Catalan outfit fork out over £50m for his services.

His stats produced this season with limited minutes prove that he’s an excellent option in the final third, providing an added cutting edge in attacking areas for Howe’s side this season.

After the disappointment of missing out on European football last season, Torres' experience of featuring consistently in those competitions could give the Magpies the difference in front of goal that they’ve been hunting for the majority of the transfer window.

Los Blancos made two major additions to their attack this summer as Kylian Mbappe joined them from Paris Saint-Germain for free and Endrick arrived from Palmeiras. The club, however, did not make any major defensive signings despite Nacho and Rafa Marin's departures from the club. They were chasing Lille's Lenny Yoro closely, but the young French defender eventually moved to Manchester United.

Man City women's player ratings vs Aston Villa: Lauren Hemp sparks another come-from-behind win for WSL leaders

The England star heads off to international duty in flying form after scoring the equaliser on Sunday before then setting up Jill Roord for the winner

Lauren Hemp continued her incredible early-season form and inspired Manchester City to another comeback win on Sunday, scoring the equaliser before setting up Jill Roord to net the team's second in an important 2-1 victory over Aston Villa.

It was a result that looked unlikely at the break, when Villa led through Gabi Nunes' first goal for the club and City had looked extremely passive. However, with Hemp on the pitch, a turnaround was always possible and her contributions helped the title hopefuls return to the top of the Women's Super League table.

The England star would have had City level at half-time, too, if it wasn't for a brilliant save from Sabrina D'Angelo. It was a rare bright spot in a rather dull first period from the hosts' perspective, with poor communication and marking from the centre-back pairing of Laia Aleixandri and Alex Greenwood the big grumble, as it had allowed Nunes to run in and convert Kirsty Hanson's cross to open the scoring.

That all started to change after the break. Villa looked more and more reserved and City pinned them in, finally getting the goal that had been coming just after the clock ticked past the hour. Leila Ouahabi's cross could only be punched by D'Angelo and Hemp was there to stop the ball getting away, controlling with her head before hooking a volley into the empty net.

Less than 10 minutes later, Hemp then turned provider for what would be the winning goal. An injection of pace allowed her to dart past a couple of defenders and cut back for Roord, who bagged her first goal since suffering an ACL injury back in January, one which secured the three points.

Ayaka Yamashita (5/10):

Distribution just wasn't quick enough for large parts.

Kerstin Casparij (6/10):

Done for pace for the goal, which happens. Didn't put a foot wrong besides that, though.

Laia Aleixandri (5/10):

Had no idea where Nunes was for the goal. Passing was too slow and not positive enough in the first half especially.

Alex Greenwood (5/10):

Has to communicate with Aleixandri about Nunes' positioning for Villa's opener. Should have done more with possession too, though did improve in the second half.

Leila Ouahabi (6/10):

Got forward plenty and it was her cross which caused D'Angelo problems for the equaliser.

Yui Hasegawa (7/10):

Could've injected more pace in the game in the first half and did that in the second.

Jill Roord (7/10):

Grew into the game and got a goal that will mean a lot to her, after only recently returning from her ACL injury.

Jess Park (7/10):

Burst into life a little more once Villa scored and was always trying to make something happen.

Mary Fowler (5/10):

Wasn't positive enough when she got on the ball.

Khadija Shaw (6/10):

Struggled for service so dropped deep a lot to contribute to build-up and drag defenders out.

Lauren Hemp (8/10):

Always looked like the player to inspire a comeback and so it proved, with an equalising goal and a match-winning assist.

Wasim, a former Warwickshire player, is believed to have guaranteed good quality training facilities and opposition. If the tour goes ahead, it seems likely the side will be based at Aitchison College. Two senior Warwickshire players, Will Rhodes, the club captain, and Oliver Hannon-Dalby, went on the MCC’s tour to Pakistan in February, which was also based at Aitchison College. Both enjoyed the experience and have given positive reports about the facilities on offer.A final decision will not be made until the club are satisfied that the tour is safe in terms of both security and Covid-19. Finances could also be an issue, with the club also understood to be considering La Manga, in Spain, as a pre-season option.Either way, the fact that Pakistan is being considered for such visits is a sure sign of progress. England have not visited the country since late 2005 due to security concerns.

Szoboszlai had a golden chance to score the fourth goal when he was presented with an open goal – however, he decided to take a couple of touches which allowed the United defenders to close in on him inside the penalty area, resulting in a wasted opportunity.

The Hundred will feature equal prize money for men’s and women’s teams, the ECB has announced.A total prize budget of £600,000 will be split equally between the men’s and the women’s competitions, in a move that the governing body says “is a step towards the ECB’s long-term commitment to making cricket a gender-balanced sport”.The announcement mirrors a similar move by Cricket Australia, which equalised the prize money on offer in the men’s and women’s editions of the Big Bash League in 2017, and last year pledged to top up their women’s national team’s prize money at the ongoing T20 World Cup to match the men’s.ALSO READ: The Hundred – full squad listsThe prize money on offer in the women’s competition is particularly significant after criticism over the gender gap between salaries on offer, with the pot on offer for the winning team (£150,000) bigger than the total wage bill for a women’s squad (£120,000).Women’s salaries in the competition range from £3,600 to £15,000, while players in the men’s competition earn from £30,000 to £125,000.The majority of the prize money on offer is awarded to teams, with the winners, losing finalists, and losing semi-finalists taking home £150,000, £75,000 and £50,000 respectively. There are also awards on offer for the MVP (£10,000) and leading run-scorer, wicket-taker and fielder (£5,000 each) in both competitions.Beth Barrett-Wild, the head of the Hundred women’s competition, said: “We’re really proud of our movement towards making cricket a gender-balanced sport and whilst we’re aware there is more to do in this space, this is an important step in the right direction. It’s recognition for the women’s players and the huge value they bring to the Hundred.”The ECB is committed to transforming women’s and girls’ cricket, from inspiring young girls to pick up a bat for the first time, through to establishing the women’s game as a professional career option. This announcement today represents one signal of intent towards that commitment.”England captain Heather Knight, who will lead London Spirit in the tournament, said: “This is a great announcement for women’s sport. Women’s professional cricket is on an exciting journey and whilst, there is still a way to go to realise gender parity, this move from the Hundred is a significant step in the right direction.”We’re all really excited about playing in the new competition and hopefully inspiring more young girls and boys to pick up a bat and ball.”

Spurs were rinsed by star who earned more than Porro & Bentancur in 22/23

It's been a bit of a turbulent campaign for Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou, albeit marked with plenty of promise. But then it's never plain sailing in the Premier League, is it?

After falling by the wayside last term, chairman Daniel Levy appointed the Australian to lead the revival and entering the final stretch, Spurs are just two points off top four, with a game in hand on fourth-placed Aston Villa.

Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy.

As we all know, the defence wasn't great last year, and while much criticism is laid onto the names of Eric Dier, Clement Lenglet and co, it's easy to forget that the man between the sticks, Hugo Lloris, sadly ended his lengthy Lilywhites career with a whimper.

Hugo Lloris' 22/23 season in numbers

Tottenham signed Lloris from Lyon in a £13m package way back in 2012 and the 37-year-old completed 447 matches for the club across more than a decade of service, named club captain in 2015.

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris

He was on the books until the 2023/24 campaign's midpoint but he failed to register a single appearance under Postecoglou, in any competition. He was not trusted.

Featuring 25 times in the Premier League last year and playing all six Champions League group games, Lloris was discernibly declining and played a big part in a Tottenham team that shipped 63 league goals across the year.

These poor displays led pundit Chris Sutton to rebuke the veteran shot-stopper's campaign, saying: "There can be no disputing Lloris has been a brilliant goalkeeper and there is a real pressure that comes with being the person between the sticks. But there can also be no denying he has turned into a liability."

Perhaps most shocking of all, Lloris made four direct errors leading to a goal in the Premier League last term. Inexcusable. No wonder all the stops were pulled to secure the right replacement at the dawn of a new era.

Not only was his effort on the pitch leaving more than a little to be desired, but the 6 foot 2 Lloris was also earning a pretty pay packet that only underscored the urgency to ship him on.

How much Hugo Lloris cost Spurs last season

Lloris penned a new contract with Spurs in January 2022, running until the end of the current campaign, but the former Les Bleus star would not feature after that Newcastle fixture and signed for Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC on a free transfer in December 2023.

In the time between playing his final fixture and departing Tottenham on a permanent transfer, Lloris actually cost Levy and co around £3.6m in wages, not playing a single minute of football.

Hugo Lloris

Richarlison

£90k-per-week

Pedro Porro

£85k-per-week

Rodrigo Bentancur

£75k-per-week

Yves Bissouma

£55k-per-week

On £100k-per-week, Lloris was earning a larger pay packet than stars such as Pedro Porro, Rodrigo Bentancur and Richarlison before completing his move away, underscoring how heavy the financial outpour was for a player performing at such a substandard level – and then not at all.

The 145-cap ace was hardly helped by a shoddy defence but there's little doubt that he was past his best last season and it's understandable that Postecoglou acted accordingly.

Without a doubt, Lloris is a modern legend for Tottenham and rightly cemented himself as one of the finest goalkeepers in Europe when at the acme of his development – winning the 2018 World Cup with France too – but he declined quite spectacularly last season.

His £17m replacement, Guglielmo Vicario, has been a breath of fresh air, really emphasising just how important it was to make the change for a long-time servant who left with great fondness but was perhaps a little too long in the tooth at the end.
