Rahane encouraged by Dhoni to 'be Ajinkya Rahane and play like Ajinkya Rahane'

“I just want to back myself, I’ve never tried to be someone else,” the Super Kings batter said after his 27-ball 61 vs Mumbai

Moody: ‘It was vintage Rahane on show tonight’

Ajinkya Rahane only found out that he was about to make his Chennai Super Kings debut “just before the toss” during their seven-wicket win over Mumbai Indians on Saturday night. But he took advantage of the opportunity presented by Ben Stokes’ injury and Moeen Ali’s illness, hitting 61 off 27 balls to set up a cruise to victory with 11 balls to spare.Coming in at No. 3 after Devon Conway fell to Jason Behrendorff in the first over of Super Kings’ run chase, Rahane was the aggressor in his partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad and struck 23 runs off a single over from Arshad Khan, the fourth of the innings, to get his new franchise ahead of the required rate.”When we were bowling, we got the idea of how the wicket was playing and how the ball was behaving,” Rahane said. “When you’re chasing 150 or 160, it’s important to bat with intent in the first six overs. If you get a good start, it becomes really easy. When I went in, it was all about playing my normal game, backing my strengths.”Related

Rahane had been a peripheral figure across the last two IPL seasons, playing twice for Delhi Capitals in 2021 and seven times for Kolkata Knight Riders last year, and had not made a half-century in the tournament since November 2020. Super Kings signed him for INR 50 lakh at December’s auction, and Rahane said that he had been encouraged by captain MS Dhoni to be himself.”Every player is different,” Rahane said. “I don’t want to be someone else; I just want to be Ajinkya Rahane. The way I know how I play, my strengths, my timing. I just want to back myself. I’ve never tried to be someone else. It’s all about trying to remind myself that if I can just be Ajinkya Rahane and play like Ajinkya Rahane, I think I’ll be fine.”The preparation we had as a team before IPL started… we came to Chennai on March 2. [Dhoni] was there and the instructions from him were pretty simple: back your game, play to your strengths rather than trying to do something else. It’s all about knowing your game and, when you get an opportunity, just back that game.”‘s instruction was completely clear, just play with intent, back yourself, don’t change anything else. If your intent is good, I have the shots that I can play at any ground so it was all about keeping it simple for me. I’m happy to bat anywhere. It’s all about your mindset and what you want to do for your team.”Ajinkya Rahane: “Whatever format I play, it’s all about giving my best every time rather than thinking ‘what if?’ or thinking about the future which is not in my hands”•Associated PressSpeaking on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time:Out, Tom Moody suggested that Rahane’s innings owed in part to the fact he had prepared for the IPL with a strong Ranji Trophy season, hitting two hundreds for Mumbai. “It’s a great story,” Moody said. “I think everyone enjoys when Jinks scores runs because he’s just one of those likeable characters.”He’s always got a smile on his face and he’s been a great servant to Indian cricket. In recent years, he’s had his ups and downs in IPL for whatever reasons. The thing that first came to mind was that I believe he’s had a very good first-class season leading into this, so he’s clearly got some good form behind him.”He was gifted a few balls early on which just lit the fire and he then just took it on from there. He wasn’t doing anything out of the ordinary. He was just playing proper cricketing shots, cuts and drives and flicks off his pads. But it was vintage Rahane on show tonight.”Rahane has not represented India since the Test tour to South Africa in 2021-22, but his innings on Saturday night prompted suggestions that he could be in contention to play in the World Test Championship final in June, in the absence of the injured Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant.”Anything can happen… as I always say, I will never give up,” Rahane said. “For me, it’s all about playing with enjoyment, and playing with passion. Whatever format I play, it’s all about giving my best every time rather than thinking ‘what if?’ or thinking about the future which is not in my hands, not in my control.”For me, it’s all about, as a player, giving my best every time and trying to be as positive as possible and, whenever I get an opportunity, I should be ready for that.”

As good as Asensio: Aston Villa ace proved he’s a £39m star in the making

Aston Villa secured passage to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a battling win over Championship strugglers Cardiff City on Friday night.

It wasn’t a vintage performance, but Unai Emery’s side were in control throughout and now step into the last eight of England’s top cup competition for the first time in a decade – and doesn’t Emery just love a knockout-style trophy.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

The Bluebirds were resilient and thwarted Villa Park’s hosts before the interval, with Ollie Watkins and Marcus Rashford missing great chances to put Villa in front, but it was Marco Asensio once again who came up with the goods to avoid a cup upset and shift one step closer.

Marco Asensio strikes again

Aston Villa welcomed Asensio from Paris Saint-Germain in January, bringing him to England on loan until the end of the term.

After scoring twice during last weekend’s dramatic victory over Chelsea, the 29-year-old was benched at Selhurst Park as Villa were thrashed by Crystal Palace, but he proved his clinical worth once again in the FA Cup.

Sharp positioning and cutting finishing left the second-tier opponents unstuck, thwarting a determined defence and giving Emery something different in attack when Watkins doesn’t have his shooting boots laced.

That’s four goals from six matches for the Spaniard, who’s proving to be a real asset as Aston Villa step into the business end of the season.

However, he wasn’t the only one to shine in the FA Cup, with a much younger teammate showing the signs of becoming a top player.

Emery's new £39m star in the making

Dutch defender Lamare Bogarde has been at Aston Villa since joining the academy from Feyenoord in 2020, with his technical quality and strong defensive skills seeing him become an increasingly familiar face in Emery’s first team.

Cardiff were limited in their attacking play, but he was composed and cultured, very much settled among his more experienced teammates.

Lamare Bogarde in action for Aston Villa

As per Sofascore, the 21-year-old was willing to get on the ball, taking 89 touches, winning three of four contested duels and making three clearances. He was crisp in possession too, completing 96% of his passes (79/82).

Birmingham Live’s John Townley was impressed by the young centre-half as he reprised his starting berth, handing him a 7/10 match rating and praising him for his partnership with Ezri Konsa, chasing back effectively when Cardiff attempted to play in behind the home side’s high line.

Konsa has risen from good to great over the past few years, regarded as a “Rolls-Royce” of a defender by former boss Dean Smith, but since becoming an enviable cog in a rounded and thriving team.

His versatility is one of the things that makes him so impressive, and Bogarde is demonstrating similar positionally flexible virtues, as you can see below.

In fact, Bogarde’s noteworthy ranking among the top 4% of positional peers for pass completion and the top 5% for tackles per 90, as per FBref, has seen him drawn as one of Konsa’s most comparable players right now, among those in Europe’s top five leagues.

According to Football Transfers, the 27-year-old Konsa is valued at £39m, a measure of his progress since signing from Brentford for £12m in 2019.

But in actuality, Aston Villa would be within their rights to field enquiries totalling much more.

In Bogarde, Emery may well have a new young prospect to fashion into a top-class star. He will face tougher tests over the coming months but has come up trumps in recent weeks to help combat injury issues and indeed keep the trophy dream alive.

During the heavy defeat at Selhurst Park, Bogarde still won five of eight duels on the evening, making four clearances and preventing the likes of Ismaila Sarr from dribbling past him even once.

There’s real potential with this one.

West Ham contact Man United in late January move for £120k-per-week player

Contact has been made with Manchester United as West Ham chiefs eye up a late January move, with co-chair David Sullivan and manager Graham Potter tipped to oversee a busy end to the window in east London.

West Ham target last-gasp January deals in multiple positions

The Hammers are in active pursuit of a new striker, following long-term injuries to Niclas Füllkrug and Michail Antonio, but a fresh centre-forward option isn’t their only potential incoming before the deadline.

West Ham make late January contact to sign ex-Liverpool star on loan

The Irons are chasing late signings.

West Ham had a bid rejected for PSV Eindhoven star Ricardo Pepi (Fabrizio Romano), and could yet go back in with an improved winter bid (Rik Elfrink). The USA international, who’s bagged 18 goals already in all competitions this season, would be a stellar capture for Potter – but if they fail with another approach, it is widely believed that Brighton starlet Evan Ferguson is another primary target.

“The news has emerged last night that Ferguson’s move to Bayer Leverkusen may have fallen through due to Al Nassr choosing to sign Jhon Duran over their forward Victor Boniface,” said club insider ExWHUemployee on Thursday.

“If the club get this confirmed and are confident that his injuries are not long-term, then further negotiations with the hope of completing before Monday’s deadline will occur.

“West Ham are prepared to include an option or obligation to buy in the loan deal to try and get the deal over the line. Talks are continuing with Ferguson, they are going positively as the club tries to work towards a deal.”

Ferguson’s possible move to the London Stadium is looking well and truly on, as Sullivan seeks to back Potter with a centre-forward who can fill in for both Fullkrug and Antonio.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sEvanFergusoncelebrates

However, it is also believed that West Ham are targeting another centre-back before the deadline, with Brighton’s Adam Webster among West Ham’s defender targets for this window.

Now, the 30-year-old has been joined by United’s Victor Lindelof.

West Ham contact Man United over signing Victor Lindelof

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, writing for United in Focus, West Ham have contacted United over signing Lindelof in January – with the £120,000-per-week Swede out of contract this summer and potentially available for a cut-price fee.

The 70-cap international appears out of Ruben Amorim’s long-term plans, motivating the Irons to test United’s resolve with an enquiry and gauge whether a mid-season deal for Lindelof is possible.

However, Bailey reports that the former Benfica star has no interest in joining West Ham, and has made that clear to his representatives.

Given Lindelof’s torrid injury record lately, not to mention the fact he’s now entered the twilight phase of his career, you could make a case that this is arguably for the best – and there could be better options out there for Potter.

Man City now also want to sign £48,000-p/w forward straight after Marmoush

Manchester City now want to sign a familiar face as they look to bolster their ranks under Pep Guardiola after a disappointing campaign to date, it has been reported.

Man City transfer latest

Though now back to winning ways, a rank run of Premier League results convinced the Manchester City chiefs to act in the January transfer window, and they are prepared to do serious business.

The Etihad outfit are believed to have agreed a deal to sign Omar Marmoush from Frankfurt after his electric start to the Bundesliga season, in a deal worth up to €80m (£67.7m) which includes a mammoth €75m up front. The Egyptian marksman is expected to fly to Manchester this week to undergo his medical and will replace Julian Alvarez in Guardiola’s squad.

Elsewhere, Uzbek defender Abdukodir Khusanov has passed his medical at the club and will join from Lens, taking up the number 45 shirt at the Etihad. They have also agreed a €35m deal to sign Vitor Reis, with the Brazilian having also completed the steps to join the club and only the announcement left to confirm the defender’s arrival from Palmeiras.

The Premier League champions also want to sign Juventus starlet Andrea Cambiaso, with a bid having reportedly been tabled for his services.

That is unlikely to be the end of their midseason spending either; they remain keen to add another midfielder to their ranks in the wake of Rodri’s injury, and Douglas Luiz is among those that is under consideration with the midfielder having fallen out of favour after just months at Juventus, leading to speculation that he could be available on loan this winter.

Luiz was once a part of the City Football Group, but has since forged his own path in senior football. Now, it has emerged that he is not the only ex-City talent that Guardiola and co. are considering.

Manchester City now eye move for forward

Now, reports in Spain claim that Manchester City have joined the race to sign Borussia Dortmund talent Jamie Bynoe-Gittens after his impressive performances so far this season in Germany.

The 20-year-old English winger was formerly on the books at the Etihad but left their youth set up to forge a career in the Bundesliga, something that he has done to good effect thus far. So far this campaign, he is the top goalscorer for Nuri Sahin’s side in Germany, while he has also found the net four times in the Champions League.

Dubbed an “incredible one on one” forward by Sahin, Gittens still has three and a half years left to run on his £48,000 a week deal at Signal Iduna Park, but that has not stopped a queue for his services from forming ahead of a potential summer move.

As per the report, Bayern Munich, Man City and Chelsea are all among his potential suitors as they hope to secure one of Europe’s brightest talents, with a move thought to be more likely should Borussia Dortmund fail to secure Champions League qualification, something that looks overwhelmingly likely at present.

With Jack Grealish having struggled on the left of City’s attack, could Bynoe-Gittens be the perfect upgrade to Guardiola’s squad?

As well as Ampadu: Farke must unleash "explosive" Leeds "weapon"

Leeds United are back in action in the Championship for the second time in 2025 this afternoon as they travel away from West Yorkshire to take on Hull City.

The Whites head into this match off the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw at Elland Road against Blackburn Rovers on New Year’s Day on Wednesday.

Daniel Farke’s side appeared to be on course for all three points after Pascal Struijk’s 88th-minute penalty, only for Danny Batth to equalise for the away team just 90 seconds later.

The German head coach, with this game coming just three days later, may decide to make some changes to his starting XI, and one player who should come back in is Ethan Ampadu.

Why Ethan Ampadu should start

Firstly, the Wales international, who only recently returned from a lengthy absence with a knee injury, is the club captain and this suggests that he brings quality leadership on the pitch that will be needed if Leeds are to mount a successful promotion push.

Also, Ampadu brings energy and strength to the middle of the park, which is something that Joe Rothwell did not provide with his performance last time out.

Leeds midfielder Ethan Ampadu.

The English midfielder, who started next to Ao Tanaka, ended the game with zero duels won, zero tackles, zero interceptions, and only one duel contested.

Ampadu, meanwhile, has averaged 2.8 tackles and interceptions per game and won 5.4 duels per match, at a success rate of 69%, which suggests that he could offer significantly more to the team out of possession.

The former Chelsea man is not the only player who should be drafted into the starting line-up, as Farke should also bring Largie Ramazani back into the fold.

Why Largie Ramazani should start

The Belgian forward was an unused substitute against Blackburn after he struggled in his start against Derby, which was his first start since returning from an ankle injury.

Ramazani missed a ‘big chance’ to open the scoring and only created one chance in his time on the pitch, before being substituted for Manor Solomon.

The Leeds whiz, who was described as “explosive” and a counter-attack “weapon” by Jacek Kulig, has shown plenty of signs of quality in a Leeds shirt this season, particularly prior to his injury, though, and should be given another chance to build up his match sharpness.

As you can see in the table above, Ramazani has scored three goals and provided one assist this season, and all of those contributions came in his first eight appearances and six starts.

This shows that the potential is there for the 23-year-old whiz to be an excellent option for Farke in the final third, but he needs game time to build himself back up and that is why he should be unleashed against Hull today.

Big Rodon upgrade: Farke considering Leeds bid for "incredible" £10m star

Leeds United are reportedly keen to add a new central defender to their squad this month.

Solomon started on the left and offered little against Blackburn, with zero shots and zero ‘big chances’ created, and should be dropped from the team to make way for the former Manchester United academy starlet.

Club now preparing bid to sign "outstanding" Celtic hero in £10m deal

A club are believed to be planning a new £10m bid to seal the services of an “outstanding” Celtic player, according to a new transfer update.

Latest Celtic news

The Hoops are preparing for the visit of Motherwell on Boxing Day, but they may have to make do without attacking hero Nicolas Kuhn.

The 24-year-old is struggling with an injury that kept him out of last Sunday’s 0-0 draw at Dundee United – a game in which his creativity and goal threat were missed – with Brendan Rodgers confirming as much, saying: “I don’t know how long Nicolas will be out for. Hopefully it’s not long term. He felt a problem with his knee and then he felt a twinge on Saturday.”

Nicolas Kuhn

Away from the injuries, transfers in and outs continue to do the rounds at Celtic, with left-back Alexandre Bernabei looking increasingly likely to seal a permanent exit away from the Scottish Premiership champions in the January transfer window.

Meanwhile, Stephen Welsh is another player who could be on his way out of the Parkhead exit door next month, with the 24-yeafr-old struggling to be a regular this season. A loan offer from KV Mechelen could be accepted for his signature. Now, another Hoops departure could also be on the cards, following a new update.

Bid planned for "outstanding" £10m Celtic ace

According to The Daily Mail’s reliable reporter Stephen McGowan, Atlanta United are preparing a £10m bid for Celtic star Kyogo Furuhashi, with the MLS side attempting to make a move for him in the summer, too.

They were “offered no encouragement” at that point, however, and are now hoping that an improved offer could be enough to prise the Japanese away from Parkhead.

Kyogo Furuhashi

It goes without saying that losing Kyogo would be an enormous blow for Celtic, considering he has become one of the club’s most influential attacking players in recent years.

The 29-year-old has scored 81 goals in 156 appearances for the Hoops, which is a superb return, also registering 18 assists for good measure. Former manager Ange Postecoglou was also a great admirer of the striker, saying of him last year:

“You look at him, the size he is and the players he is against, and he doesn’t shirk any of it. He puts the opposition under pressure, he’s so clever with movement and he wants to be front and centre when the opportunities are there. He was outstanding and has been from the moment he joined this club.”

Hopefully, Kyogo’s head isn’t turned by a move to the MLS at this stage in his career, instead preferring to keep Celtic enjoying trophy glory for the foreseeable future.

1 ByHenry Jackson Dec 23, 2024

He is still contracted at Parkhead until the summer of 2027, so there is no need for the Hoops to consider cashing in on him, with that decision not having to be made until the end of the current season, at the very earliest.

Vitor Pereira must immediately axe £140k-p/w Wolves trio in January

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly set to appoint Vitor Pereira as their new manager.

The Portuguese boss will replace Gary O’Neil in the hot seat at Molineux after he was sacked from his post on Monday following a 2-1 home defeat to Ipswich Town.

He leaves the club 19th in the Premier League with just nine points to their name so far, with Southampton the only side in the table on fewer points. Incoming boss Pereira has a tough job trying to keep the Old Gold in the top flight.

It seems as though they will have to sanction some exits, with finance expert Stefan Borson telling Football Insider they will have to make some sales to keep in line with PSR guidelines. Three names in particular could be smart for the Midlands club.

1 Rayan Ait-Nouri

Ait-Nouri

One of the biggest names at Molineux at the moment is Rayan Ait-Nouri. Despite a poor start to the season from the team, he has made a fast start on an individual level. In 16 top-flight appearances this term, the left-wing back has scored three times and assisted three times.

According to a November report from The Sun, Manchester United could be a potential destination for the Algerian defender. He is a player thought to be ‘high on the wishlist’ of Ruben Amorim, and the player himself reportedly wants to leave.

He is someone who O’Neil certainly rated highly during his time at the club. Last month, the former Old Gold boss explained the Algerian “can play anywhere on the pitch”, describing him as an “extremely talented” footballer.

There is no doubt that losing the 23-year-old, who earns £10k-per-week, would be a huge blow for Wolves. However, he was valued at a reported £58m earlier this year, and that could be key money for Pereira as he hopes to avoid a PSR breach and reinvest money into the squad.

2 Pablo Sarabia

Pablo Sarabia

Another player who could be on the move this winter is Pablo Sarabia. The experienced Spanish playmaker is only under contract at Molineux until the end of the season. One report from Spain suggested in November that his former side Sevilla could try and bring him back as early as January, although that could be a tough deal to agree with Wolves.

With that being said, perhaps it is a move that makes sense. The 32-year-old brings plenty of experience but is the club’s joint-highest earner on £90k-per-week. This could represent an opportunity to shift his wages off the club’s books. Hypothetically, if he were to leave on the 1st of January, Wolves could save themselves £234k.

Considering the lack of involvement for the Spaniard this season, it might be wise to move him on. He has played just seven times in all competitions, with five of those appearances coming in the Premier League.

Given the midfielder’s game time this season, and the fact he is on such high wages, selling him could be a wise move for Wolves. They could save themselves a lot of money and freshen up the squad in attacking areas.

3 Jose Sa

It has been an odd season for the Old Gold in the goalkeeping department, with both Jose Sa and summer signing Sam Johnstone challenging for a spot in the side. For the Portuguese shot-stopper, it has been a torrid campaign so far.

Although he has not played in every Premier League game so far this term, the 31-year-old was predominantly O’Neil’s first choice between the posts. He has played nine times, conceding 23 goals, an average of 2.5 per game.

His last outing was a shocking 4-0 defeat at the hands of Everton, which was a really disappointing showing from the whole side, as the score reflects.

Just after the summer transfer window, O’Neil admitted that Sa could depart the club if the battle with Johnstone for number one was not one he was winning.

That move is yet to materialise, but with the January window right around the corner, things could change. Given his inconsistent performances and £40k-per-week wage, it might not be a surprise to see Sa leave.

Pereira could turn "lightning" Wolves flop into his very own Neto

This Wolverhampton Wanderers flop could turn around his time at Molineux under Vitor Pereira.
