Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their pre-season campaign with a commanding 5-1 victory over Hearts in Edinburgh. The match saw a dominant second half, with four goals scored after Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the first half. Will Lankshear, Moore, Djed Spence, and Ashley Phillips all contributed to the impressive win.

Following this, Spurs secured a 2-0 win against Championship side Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road, with Yves Bissouma and Dane Scarlett finding the net.

Continuing their summer tour during the Coupang Play Series 2024 in South Korea, Tottenham faced J1 League champions Vissel Kobe, where they triumphed 3-2. Moore once again made his mark by scoring the decisive goal in the 88th minute, adding to earlier strikes from Pedro Porro and Heung-min Son. Spurs beat K-League XI and then wrapped up the Korean leg of their pre-season tour with a defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich. Harry Kane missed the game due to an injury.

Postecoglou's men could be set for a reunion with Kane when Spurs host Bayern again, this time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on August 10.

Alex Carey 'nipping at the heels' of Tim Paine – Adam Gilchrist

The former wicketkeeper, who feels Paine’s future as Test captain is in his own hands, lauded him for helping reshape the team after the ball-tampering scandal

Alex Carey is “nipping at the heels” of Tim Paine but the future of Australia’s Test captain remains in his own hands, according to Adam Gilchrist. It is not beyond the realms that the New Zealand series, which starts in Perth on Thursday, marks Paine’s last home internationals. After the Sydney Test in early January, Australia’s next assignment is a two-match series in Bangladesh in June before the next home summer.Steven Smith’s leadership ban will be completed at the end of March which means he will be eligible for a return to captaincy, and Gilchrist picked out him and Pat Cummins as potential options to replace Paine. The upturn in Australia’s Test form this year has cemented Paine’s position and it appears unlikely he will be pushed out, but having turned 35 a few days ago there may also come a time when he feels it is time to move on.From a batting point of view, Carey has made 143 and 73 in his last two Sheffield Shield outings and is the natural successor to Paine. It is a position Gilchrist has first-hand experience of, having been the man who replaced Ian Healy in 1999.”I reckon while ever he is in the team he should be captain,” Gilchrist, who is a commentator, said. “And then let’s see after these three Tests – that is the summer for him. See how he feels at the end of this summer. I feel it was more of a light-hearted comment when he said it might be his last summer. But like all players that are getting to that age bracket, it’s almost a summer-by-summer analysis.”It’s almost like deja vu – not for him, but for me – when you’ve got a guy like Alex Carey nipping at his heels. He’s starting to show some really promising signs of consistency now in his Sheffield Shield cricket. With his overall game and where the attention gets drawn to is his run-scoring. His wicketkeeping seems to be extremely consistent. As is Paine’s. But Carey is now starting to really accumulate important runs in first-class cricket, so that is going to really put pressure on him.”If he is playing next summer, Paine should be captain of the Australian cricket team. But we will have to see at the end of the summer if he is still in there – whether it’s his own personal judgement or the selectors’. As long as he warrants a spot in the team, he can keep leading the team. I’m amazed at the way he has helped rebuild and reshape the team after the disaster of South Africa.”Tim Paine with Steven Smith at training•AFP

Though Paine’s Test average remains a modest 30.97 (he has barely been needed so far this summer with the prolific returns of Australia’s top order), Gilchrist believes he has a significant innings him should Australia need it.”Tim’s chipped in with some really important innings,” Gilchrist said. “He hasn’t got the breakthrough runs but he plays a decent role with the bat. I’d be surprised if in this series there’s not a time when we’re under pressure whether it’s a 40, 50 or a 70 that he plays his role. He’s so experienced he can fulfill that. The only time the attention is drawn to him is if someone else is breathing down his neck that they may be able to add value.”From Paine’s point of view, he said he had not given his future any more thought since the start of the international season. “In terms of competition, when you are playing for Australia as the wicketkeeper, there’s constant competition,” he said. “We are renowned for having excellent wicketkeeper-batsmen and that’s no different at the moment. As I touched on, it’s a great environment in our set-up and I’m enjoying every minute of it and will continue to do so as long as I can.”

Aston Villa star was even worse than Rogers vs West Ham

Aston Villa failed to make the most of their rivals slipping up on Saturday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur were hammered 3-0 by London rivals Fulham and that created an opportunity for the Villans to extend the gap between themselves and Ange Postecoglou's side in the hunt for Champions League football.

Unfortunately, they only gained one point as they moved three clear of Spurs after Michail Antonio's first-half header was then cancelled out by Nicolo Zaniolo's second-half strike at the London Stadium.

Unai Emery

Two players – Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers – were handed their first Premier League starts of the season and one of those players, the Colombian centre-forward, failed Unai Emery's big test badly.

Morgan Rogers' stats against West Ham

The January signing from Championship side Middlesbrough did not grasp his opportunity with both hands but also did not do himself a huge disservice.

Rogers was selected to play on the left flank and tried to get himself involved in the match with 44 touches of the ball in 63 minutes on the pitch.

Minutes played

63

Dribbles completed

2/3

Passes completed

20/26

Duels won

4/11

Possession lost

11x

As you can see in the table above, the former second division starlet did complete 67% of his attempted dribbles and managed to win four physical duels throughout the game, which shows that he put himself about and worked hard to make things happen.

The 21-year-old dynamo also registered one shot on target, as he forced Alphonse Areola into a save, but failed to create a chance for his teammates.

These statistics show that Rogers was average without being terrible on the wing as he did not have a howler but did not stand out as a key performer for the Villans.

Why Jhon Duran was worse than Morgan Rogers

Duran also made his first Premier League start of the campaign, having scored two goals in 14 substitute appearances before Sunday, and let Emery down badly after the Spanish head coach placed his trust in the striker.

The Colombia international was worse than Rogers as he was completely ineffective at the top end of the pitch, which led to the manager taking him off to be replaced by Moussa Diaby – who went on to assist the equaliser – at the break.

Jhon Duran

Duran was a lightweight for the Villans out of possession as West Ham's players beat him in 80% (4/5) of their duels with the former MLS forward, which shows that he was far too easily beaten in physical contests.

The 20-year-old attacker also failed to register a single effort on goal or chance created for his teammates, along with a 0% (0/1) dribble success rate, on the ball. Whereas, Rogers had a shot on target, completed two dribbles, and won four of his duels.

These statistics show that the young marksman struggled with both sides of the game as he failed to make the most of a huge chance to showcase his quality from the start in a Premier League game and let Emery down badly.

He was worse than Rogers, who at least tried to make things happen and did win some of his physical contests, and may not get another opportunity to start in the league any time soon, based on this disappointing performance.

Pooran, Hemraj, Shepherd help Amazon Warriors keep all-win record intact

Guyana Amazon Warriors kept pace with Trinbago Knight Riders on the opening weekend of CPL 2019, as a fiery half-century from Nicholas Pooran helped them score 72 off the final four overs at Providence, putting a total on the board in the process that was well out of reach of Barbados Tridents. It gave them a 47-run win, which meant that Amazon Warriors ended their initial home slate with three wins from three to equal the Knight Riders on six points, while the rest of the teams remained winless.Pooran struck 61 off 30 balls with five sixes to light up the ground. Romario Shepherd then lit up the stumps in the chase, sitting on a hat-trick at one stage in the process of taking 4 for 13 in just 2.4 overs, as Tridents were bowled out for 133 in just 16.4 overs.A rough night for NurseAshley Nurse had a rough night. Having to go solo after his legspinning wingman Sandeep Lamichhane left the field after one over due to a bad reaction from a topical cream, Nurse went wicketless for 38 runs in his four overs. But worse, he spilled Chandrapaul Hemraj on a fairly straightforward chance off a full toss spliced to extra cover on 37. It allowed the opener to sustain momentum after a pair of early setbacks.Jason Holder had bounced out Brandon King in the second over while Shimron Hetmyer’s sliced drive was intercepted by a brilliant effort diving left at backward point by USA’s Hayden Walsh Jr., on as a sub for Lamichhane. Shoaib Malik was the third batsman to fall for a single-digit score when he edged Roshon Primus behind attempting to run a single to third man, and the tenth over ended on 63 for 3.But the home side scored 117 off their last ten overs, aided in part by the platform laid by Hemraj. Nurse atoned for his error in the 16th, running back from point to claim a skier off of Raymon Reifer’s bowling, but Hemraj had made 63 by that stage, and done a solid job building the foundation for Pooran and Sherfane Rutherford to launch from.Pooran turns it onThe wicketkeeper-batsman put on a sensational hitting display in the waning overs. Rutherford had provided an appetiser with four sixes muscled over the leg side and long-off in a stretch from the 17th through the first ball of the 19th. But Pooran came on strike and provided fans with the main course to lap up when he creamed five sixes off the last eight balls of the innings. He started with a pair of flicks over long-on before working his away around to long-off and finally cover. Almost every ball was pitched on off stump, but his clever use of the crease allowed him to spray the ball at will over different parts of the boundary. The pair left the Tridents shell-shocked heading into the innings break.Striking goldHemraj’s night wasn’t done after his first-innings half-century. He began the chase wiping out prized CPL recruit Alex Hales for a golden duck with a delivery that kept low and Tridents failed to get the wheels going after that. Shoaib continued to cycle through his spinners for the first eight overs as more breakthroughs followed.Shadab Khan struck twice – Johnson Charles caught at deep midwicket and debutant Leniko Boucher at mid-off – before Jonathan Carter dragged Shoaib on defending away from his body. Holder then committed a blunder with a slow response to a drive over cover by JP Duminy, allowing Keemo Paul’s relay to Chris Green to catch him short. Duminy soon dragged on to Paul as well, leaving the score 75 for 6 at the strategic time-out.Shepherd then wiped out the tail in quick time. Nurse’s aggressive counter-attack ended when he was brilliantly caught down the leg side by Pooran, who anticipated an attempted scoop to pull off a fantastic diving catch to his left. Reifer lost track of his stumps shuffling across and was bowled behind his legs first-ball to put Shepherd on a hat-trick. He ended the match in his next over. Primus flat-batted a slog to long-on before Lamichhane was yorked to send everyone home early.

Ian Chappell diagnosed with skin cancer

The former Australia captain has revealed that he has been undergoing intense radiotherapy

Former Australia captain-turned-commentator Ian Chappell has revealed he has been undergoing intense radiotherapy after being diagnosed with skin cancer. The 75-year-old Chappell, who played 75 Tests for Australia from 1964 to 1980, said he had completed five weeks of treatment, having cancers removed from his shoulder, neck and underarm. The pathology has come back clear, according to him, and he expects to be fit to commentate during ‘s Ashes coverage in August.”I didn’t tell too many people early on. Mainly because I just wasn’t sure what the radiotherapy would involve and how weary I’d be,” Chappell told .”But as it turned out, it wasn’t so bad. A bit of tiredness at night and a bit of skin irritation, but other than that I’m feeling pretty good. I told family and gradually a couple of my team-mates and I’ve been getting calls from them pretty regularly which is nice.”With the Ashes coming up now, I’ll speak to Nine and just say, ‘look, I’m ready to go if you need me.”Chappell, who made 5345 Test runs at an average of 42.42, also revealed that he enjoyed a family reunion with his brothers Greg and Trevor.”When you hit 70 you feel (vulnerable) anyhow, but I guess I’ve got so used to bloody skin cancers over the years, and the fact that none of them have been melanomas, probably provides a bit of comfort. It may be naivety on my part,” he said. “I’ve had multiple skin cancers cut off, burnt off and every other way you can get rid of them.”When Richie [Benaud] and Tony [Greig] went … again, it was just a reminder that it happens to everybody.”Benaud, who also suffered from skin cancer, died in 2015 after a long battle with the illness, while Greig died in 2012 having battled lung cancer. Both were Chappell’s long-time commentary colleagues.Chappell had reportedly continued to commentate for Macquarie Sports Radio during his radiotherapy, but had stepped back during the World Cup due to late working hours.

Haseeb Hameed fifty leads Lancashire hold out against spirited Northants

Lancashire have made little secret of the fact that they regard themselves as the strongest all-round side in Division Two, and not too many would argue with that assessment, but for once it was not the bowlers running amok but stubborn resistance from their batsmen that served them well as they seek to regain higher status at the first time of asking. With three counties to be promoted this season as part of a divisional restructuring, a Lancashire failure would be hard to countenance, but it needed some workmanlike resistance on the final day at Wantage Road to protect their unbeaten record and stretch their lead over second-placed Glamorgan to seven points.Lancashire never seriously threatened their target of 391 in a minimum of 89 overs, reaching 275 for 4 when stumps were pulled with six overs remaining. The potential for nine overs with the second new ball insisted that a spirited Northants took the game long but in the first over with it Brett Hutton suffered a refused lbw appeal and an edge short of slip in his first over and reality soon dawned. It is below Lancashire where the jostling really starts in Division Two. Glamorgan are the surprise packet of the season and only 29 points separate the rest, led by Derbyshire, who unexpectedly find themselves third after beating Worcestershire at Kidderminster, and propped up by the perennial strugglers Leicestershire. Those of a mind to dismiss Leicestershire’s chances out of hand risk a pep talk from Paul Nixon until it is mathematically impossible. Forty miles up the M1 at Grace Road, Hassan Azad, knew that only too well, stoutly saying after their defeat against Durham: “We don’t feel we are out of it. The table is so close that with five games to go if we can get some forward momentum there is still a chance for us to get in the mix.”At Wantage Road, Haseeb Hameed, given licence to linger, passed fifty for only the second time this season. He was one of four Lancashire batsmen to do so. Alex Davies followed up his career-best 147 with an in-tune 52 and Josh Bohannon (for only the second time this summer) and Dane Vilas both assembled untroubled fifties before a draw was accepted. Make that five fifties if you count the shots played by the next man in, Steven Croft, on the dressing room balcony, his visualised pull shot against the second new ball being particularly impressive. As ever, though, it was the health of Hameed’s game that attracted most attention. He made a century in the opening match of the season at Lord’s, bringing excitable predictions that he had rediscovered the form that brought him an England Test debut back in 2016 but another run of low scores has followed. Given a chance with England too soon because too many experts were carried away by the of his debut, he has had a long road back.Wantage Road, all of a slumber, was an afternoon made for his passivity. Even as India lost in the World Cup semi-final, a spectator popped his head in the press box, more concerned with a Dead Ball signal that he thought had been made for four byes. The pitch was benign,Hameed left well and worked the bowling smartly off his pads before he shouldered arms to a turning offspinner from Rob Keogh early in the final session and lost his off stump. His most anxious phase came against Ben Sanderson after lunch as the lbw decisions (111 for 3 in the 33rd) gave Northants a glimmer of victory. Sanderson on a roll is often when Northants’ cricket comes alive. Hameed top-edged a hook over long leg for six and withstood considerable Northants squawking, twice for slip catches that fell short and once for a stumping when his back foot remained entrenched, or maybe it was a catch when there was fresh air between the bat and the ball, or perhaps for taking too long to adopt his guard, or having his short collar at the wrong angle, or just for being there, defiantly.During Northamptonshire’s second innings, Lancashire were without strike bowler Saqib Mahmood, who suffered an abdominal injury that ruled him out of England Lions’ squad to play Australia A at Canterbury next week. A shame for a career that is catching light slower than had been hoped.Northants batted on for five overs at the start of the day, thrashing another 49 runs to add to their 341. The security was necessary because without it a Lancashire run chase could well have claimed the game. As it is, a draw takes Northants fifth and with a new captain at the helm, Adam Rossington, it would not be natural if they did not join the chorus of sides asserting that this will be their year. The clever money, though, would be better put on Middlesex whose Australian coach Stuart Law finally seems to be battering them into some sort of shape.

Juventus FFP trouble could hand Arsenal "cash-plus-player" Vlahovic route

As Arsenal look to bounce back from consecutive defeats against West Ham United and Fulham, the January transfer window could quickly become season-defining. The Gunners will be desperate to close the five-point gap on Premier League leaders Liverpool and will be well aware of how winter reinforcements can play a part in that, especially if Mikel Arteta lands his targets this month.

With that said, those at The Emirates outfit have reportedly been told what it would take for them to sign one particular Serie A star this month, in what could potentially see them hand a financially troubled club a needed boost.

Arsenal transfer news

Arsenal's pursuit of another striker is hardly a well-kept secret this month, with Arteta looking to add the goals that Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah have struggled to provide for his side so far this season.

With that said, Sky Sports' Gary Cotterill has claimed that Juventus would listen to play-plus cash offers for Dusan Vlahovic this month. Cotterill said, via The Boot Room: “Not Ivan Toney because I don’t think Brentford will sell him in January. Another player though we know Mikel Arteta is a fan of is Dusan Vlahovic. Juventus wanted £50m, but that was too steep for Arsenal, but Juventus have financial problems. They would listen to a cash-plus-player offer and there are also these tax rules in Italy which is something for them to consider."

Arsenal could finally sign "lightning" Vlahovic

Of course, this isn't the first time that the Serbian has been linked with a move to Arsenal. Arsenal were reportedly interested in signing Vlahovic before he chose a move to Juventus over the North London club in 2022. Almost two years later, the Gunners could finally get the man that Arteta is reportedly a fan of, as he looks to gain an edge in the Premier League title race.

A player who has already earned plenty of praise from English pundits, Vlahovic has previously caught the attention of Micah Richards, who told BBC Radio Five Live, via The Independent: “I have watched him a couple of times now. He is lightning. It’s ridiculous. He has got 16 in 18 this season. His left foot is like a wand. I am telling you now, he is everything, he is everything you need.”

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

With the January window now open, Arsenal would be wise to land a striker if they want to avoid the heartbreak of last season and secure their first Premier League title under Arteta. Currently five points adrift, the Gunners need to find a boost one way or another, or risk falling away entirely in the race for silverware this season.
