Saqib Mahmood will make his return to competitive action on the white-ball leg of England Lions’ tour of Sri Lanka in February, following the stress fracture in his back that ruled him out of the 2022 home international season.Mahmood, 25, impressed on England’s tour of the Caribbean in early 2022, where he made his Test debut and claimed six wickets at 22.83 in his two appearances. However, he has not played since his solitary County Championship fixture for Lancashire against Gloucestershire in May.He was, however, part of the pace bowler rehab programme in the UAE in October, as was his fellow quick, Brydon Carse, who is also included in the white-ball squad after sustaining a toe injury during last summer’s ODI series against South Africa.Yorkshire’s fast bowler Matt Fisher, who made his Test debut alongside Mahmood in Barbados in March, is one of four players named for both the red- and white-ball legs. Somerset’s captain Tom Abell, Lancashire’s left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, and the prolific Essex seamer, Sam Cook, are also included in both 16-man squads. The Test squad includes two other capped players in Alex Lees, who opened alongside Zak Crawley throughout the 2022 home summer but was dropped for the recent tour of Pakistan in favour of Ben Duckett, and Haseeb Hameed, who made a century for the Lions against the senior squad in the UAE in October, having been dropped after the last Ashes tour in 2021-22.With several contenders for England’s squads set to be in action at the SA20 and ILT20 tournaments in the coming months, the 28 players in the Lions party include three members of the Under-19 squad that reached the World Cup final in Antigua last year. Jacob Bethell, Tom Prest and James Rew were all key figures in the team that helped propel Rehan Ahmed towards his memorable Test debut in Karachi last month. Ahmed is not included in the Lions set-up, but two other legspinners feature, in Hampshire’s Mason Crane and the Essex allrounder Matt Critchley.Bethell and Rew are both currently playing grade cricket in Australia, and will rejoin the Under-19s squad for this month’s two Youth Tests in Australia before joining the Lions ODI squad.ECB Performance Director, Mo Bobat, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity to expose players to the challenges of playing A-team cricket in the sub-continent, which will be fantastic for their development.”The series also provides us with the chance to observe the players ahead of this year’s World Cup as well as next winter’s Test series in India.”The squads have been selected with careful consideration of each player’s individual programme. We’ve worked closely with the counties to understand the players’ best interests as we map their development opportunities. In some cases that includes enabling players to play in domestic franchise cricket.”The ODI squad takes into account the strength in depth that we have across a number of key roles in our England Men’s white-ball teams and many of the players will join us directly from cricket they’ve been playing elsewhere, in Australia, South Africa or the UAE.”After a hugely exciting and successful first half of the winter for our Test and Twenty20 teams, I am sure the Lions players will be suitably motivated to make the most of this opportunity.”The red-ball tour will begin with a three-day warm-up match in Colombo on January 25 before two four-day Tests against Sri Lanka A in Galle. The white-ball squad will then play three ODIs against Sri Lanka A in Colombo, with the opening match scheduled for 15 February. The ECB is set to confirm the Head Coach and the captains for each squad before the series, while selection is subject to attainment of England Lions’ minimum fitness standards.Lions Test squad Tom Abell, Josh Bohannon, Jack Carson, Sam Cook, Matt Fisher, Nathan Gilchrist, Tom Haines, Haseeb Hameed, Tom Hartley, Jack Haynes, Lyndon James, Alex Lees, Liam Patterson-White, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith, Josh TongueLions ODI squad Tom Abell, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Mason Crane, Matt Critchley, Matt Fisher, Sam Hain, Tom Hartley, Tom Lammonby, Saqib Mahmood, Tom Prest, James Rew, Luke Wood.

TVNZ is set to become the exclusive domestic broadcaster for all of New Zealand men’s and women’s international matches as well as the Super Smash from the beginning of 2023-24 home summer until the end of 2025-26 season. The move, according to an NZC media release, has come following Spark’s decision to exit the sports streaming market. The new deal with New Zealand’s largest free-to-air broadcaster will officially begin in July 2023, with the current home summer programme to be screened on Spark Sport and TVNZ. In addition to over 300 international and domestic cricket matches being screened live on a combination of TVNZ1 and Duke over the agreed three-year period, these fixtures will also be streamed on TVNZ+. Whisper, the production company, will continue to produce the matches for broadcast. The release also stated that the value of NZC’s media rights package has not changed.”Spark Sport has contributed significantly to the New Zealand sports environment, by introducing competition to the market, increasing the volume of cricket produced for broadcast, and implementing cutting-edge technology,” NZC chief executive David White said.”Notwithstanding the disappointment for Spark Sport, this is a very good outcome for the game of cricket in New Zealand. It safeguards the professional game; it safeguards the community game, and it provides unprecedented access for Kiwi cricket fans.”We’re delighted New Zealanders can look forward to this level of free-to-air coverage – it’s a game-changer for the sport in this country.”NZC had entered into a six-year deal with Spark Sport in 2019 to show all home cricket, ending a relationship with Sky that dates back to 1995, with a small amount of cricket broadcast on TVNZ.

Arsenal now considered favourites to sign £83m striker ahead of Real Madrid

Arsenal are believed to be in pole position to sign an £83 million striker, even ahead of European champions Real Madrid, as things stand – with manager Mikel Arteta recently finding out the hard way that his side need further options up front.

Arsenal lose Kai Havertz for the rest of the season

Star striker Kai Havertz, in some terrible news for the Gunners, is set to miss the rest of this 2024/2025 campaign after tearing his hamstring on a warm-weather training trip to Dubai.

The 25-year-old had scored 15 goals and registered a further five assists in all competitions, but Arteta must now find a solution to cope with Havertz’s absence. Raheem Sterling can play as a makeshift striker when required, and the previously out-of-favour Englishman could be about to see a lot more match action.

With Arsenal also seven points behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race, the odds are stacked against Arteta’s side in terms of domestic glory this season, with Emirates Stadium chiefs already having one eye on 2025/2026.

They’ll be eager to ensure that the north Londoners do not find themselves in this precarious position next campaign when it comes to shortages in attack, with RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko firmly on their transfer shortlist.

Arsenal favourites to sign RB Leipzig starlet Benjamin Sesko

Sesko rejected a proposal to join Arsenal last summer, instead deciding to sign a contract extension, on the condition of a “gentlemen’s agreement” that he can leave this year or 2026.

Now, German news outlet SportBILD, via Sport Witness, claim Arsenal are the “hottest contender” to sign Sesko this summer – above Real, Bayern Munich and other big-name sides.

Despite reports of a £65 million release clause, the news website reports that this isn’t a fixed clause, and Leipzig will hold out for a bidding war as they seek to raise around £83 million for Sesko’s signature.

Luckily for Arsenal, this is actually a drop from the price tag mentioned recently, with SportBILD denying claims that Leipzig want as much as £109 million.

The 21-year-old has been in red-hot form again this season with 15 goals in all competitions, and he’s been called a “special” player by former Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell.

All-round Alice Capsey, bowlers hand Birmingham Phoenix their first defeat

Oval Invincibles squeezed the life out of Birmingham Phoenix’s star-studded batting line-up with spin, boosting their qualification hopes and leaving Southern Brave as the only unbeaten side across the women’s Hundred.Alice Capsey, Sophia Smale and Mady Villiers returned combined figures of 5 for 48 from 50 balls, running through Phoenix’s top order while suffocating their scoring, to leave Invincibles needing only 107 to win in their third and final home game. They knocked the target off with 13 balls to spare, as Lauren Winfield-Hill anchored the run chase with 41 not out off 38 balls. Emily Arlott bowled tightly, taking 1 for 8 from 17 balls and dismissing Capsey, but Phoenix needed regular wickets and struggled to make inroads.van Niekerk returns
Invincibles’ decision to leave Dane van Niekerk out of their last two games was a seismic one: she was their captain and the tournament’s MVP as they lifted the trophy last season, but with four overseas players permitted in the squad and Suzie Bates in excellent form, she was squeezed out of the side. But with her wife Marizanne Kapp rested for the Phoenix game with a sore quadriceps, van Niekerk returned to the side. “It has been tough sitting out,” she admitted at the toss, resuming captaincy duties after Bates had been deputised, as her decision to bowl first was vindicated by an impressive performance from her bowlers. With the bat, she was not at her fluent best but still made a telling contribution from No. 4 in what was her first innings since last year’s WBBL final. Van Niekerk was reprieved early on when Amy Jones fumbled a run-out chance, but consecutive boundaries – one swept, one pulled – off Georgia Elwiss removed any scoring pressure from the chase. She ended up unbeaten on 21 off as many balls, leaving Invincibles’ coach Jon Batty with another tough decision to make when Kapp returns to fitness.Phoenix flounder
Phoenix came into this game with a 100% record to protect but never got going with the bat. Sophie Devine fell early, top-edging a sweep into the leg side to be caught-and-bowled by Smale – the 17-year-old left-arm spinner – as Eve Jones’ anchoring, run-a-ball 29 was the only contribution of note.Smale, Capsey and Villiers removed all of the top five between them. Capsey had Amy Jones caught slapping to point, while Villiers’ arm ball accounted for Ellyse Perry, who was smartly stumped by Winfield-Hill. Capsey bowled Eve Jones and Sophie Molineux as Phoenix slipped from 64 for 2 to 71 for 5, and they could only sneak up to 106 despite Emily Arlott’s late blows.Invincibles cruise home
Winfield-Hill and Bates set the tone in the chase with three boundaries in the first seven balls, getting Invincibles ahead of the run rate. And despite Bates falling inside the powerplay, Capsey signalled her intent by hammering her third ball down the ground for six. When Winfield-Hill hit Molineux for four and six in the first set of the powerplay, the rest of the innings was a formality.”It was a big game for us,” Capsey said. “Everyone came out with the energy of wanting to be part of a big occasion. I tend to thrive on the big moments; it narrows my focus a bit more. At the moment, within this team, I’m really backed to take the positive option which is amazing. It gives me great confidence.”

Tottenham now make contact to sign new £15m-per-year international for Ange

Tottenham have now begun exploring a deal to sign a new forward for Ange Postecoglou this month as they look to bolster their ranks in the wake of a disappointing first half of the Premier League campaign, according to a fresh report.

Tottenham need reinforcements

Having been ravaged by injuries, Tottenham are in need of more signings this January. They have already begun in strong fashion, signing goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in a deal worth £12.5m from Slavia Prague, and the Czech shot-stopper going on to keep two clean sheets in his first two Spurs appearances.

However, there are still gaps in the squad. Centre-back remains a concern following injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, though the performances of Archie Gray have gone some way to alleviating those concerns.

Elsewhere, there are problems in attack. Despite scoring the second most goals in the Premier League so far this season, some of their forwards continue to underwhelm. Timo Werner is yet to find the net this season, while Heung Min-Son has only managed five top flight goals, underwhelming by his usual high standards.

Long-term injuries to both Richarlison and Wilson Odobert have also left Spurs light in attack, forcing Dejan Kulusevski to play in wide areas more often than Postecoglou would seemingly like, with his long term future looking likely to be in the centre of midifeld.

With that in mind, it appears that a new forward is needed for the second half of the campaign, and now Spurs are seemingly trying to land one.

Tottenham investigating shock move for England international

Now, a fresh report from The Independent has claimed that Spurs are one of two English sides interested in a move to sign Marcus Rashford this month, with the Manchester United outcast expected to leave. The Englishman has been sidelined since Ruben Amorim’s arrival, despite scoring the first goal of the former Sporting CP coach’s regime at Old Trafford.

As a result, a move away in January looks likely as the Red Devils try to shift his £15m per year salary from their books at least temporarily, though it is suggested that “any move this January is almost certain to be a loan” rather than a temporary exit.

And after Spurs were linked with Rashford over the weekend, this new report claims that “informal talks” have taken place over a potential switch to north London, where he would be a welcome upgrade to Postecoglou’s squad.

Tottenham now want to sign "terrific" new £15m attacker ahead of Chelsea

He could be a low cost addition for Postecoglou’s squad.

2 ByBen Browning Jan 13, 2025

However, there is also talks being held over a move away from England for Rashford, a transfer that is claimed to be “much likelier” at present than moving to another Premier League side between now and the end of the month. Though he has struggled for form this season, his speed, directness and powerful shooting make him a dangerous opponent, as former Barcelona boss Xavi explained when his side faced him two years ago.

“In the transition he is very, very dangerous so, yes, we need to take care of all of them but especially Rashford”, he said of the Manchester United side. “He’s one of the most dangerous players now in Europe, yeah. He’s very fast, he has a very good at dribbling in one-versus-one.”

Missing that so far this season thanks to the form of Son and injuries elsewhere, it is little surprise to see Tottenham exploring a shock move, even if it is unlikely.

Alice Capsey, the rising star of last year’s Women’s Hundred, has been named in her first England squad for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, but there is no place for Tammy Beaumont among the 15 names who will compete in Birmingham at the end of the month.Capsey, who turns 18 in August, played an integral part in Oval Invincibles’ victory in the inaugural season of the Hundred, finishing as the team’s joint-second-highest run-scorer and their third-highest wicket-taker, with her stand-out moment being an innings of 59 from 41 balls against London Spirit at Lord’s.She is one of two uncapped teenagers in England’s ranks, alongside the left-arm seamer Freya Kemp, who has been added to Southern Brave’s ranks for this year’s Hundred, having helped secure the Charlotte Edwards Cup with Southern Vipers already this season.Issy Wong, who claimed three wickets on her ODI debut against South Africa on Friday – only weeks after picking up her first Test cap against the same opponents – has also been included in the squad for a tournament that will take place in her home city of Birmingham between July 29 and August 7. Katherine Brunt, England’s senior pace bowler, who retired from Tests earlier this year, has also been named in the 15.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The same squad will also take on South Africa in the T20I leg of the ongoing multi-format series, starting at Chelmsford on July 21. England currently lead the series by six points to two after two comprehensive wins in the first two ODIs.However, the squad’s shock omission is that of Beaumont – arguably England’s most dependable batter of the past five years, dating back to her starring role in the 2017 World Cup victory, when she was the team’s top scorer for the tournament with 410 runs at 45.55.In 2022, however, Beaumont has made just 34 runs in two T20Is (the format for the Commonwealth Games) while her ODI average for the year (28.21 in 14 games) has dipped below 40 for the first time since she broke into the side in 2016.”We’ve picked what we think is our best T20 squad,” Lisa Keightley, England’s head coach, said. “We’ve got one eye on taking our T20 game forward, but we do believe this squad gives us the best chance of success in the Commonwealth Games – and that’s something to be really excited by.”T20 cricket and women’s cricket in general is evolving all the time – and in order to put ourselves in a position to win global tournaments we have to move forward with it, be aggressive, be dynamic and part of our selection is about embracing that. Similarly we have selected players who are flexible, adaptable, fit in a number of roles and give us the most options for individual match-ups.”It’s really exciting that we’ve got so much competition for places. Obviously, it’s hard for those that miss out, it’s never nice to not be selected in a squad, but we’re not accustomed to having to make such difficult decisions and they are part of the game and an indication of how much the game is progressing.Tammy Beaumont has been a mainstay of England’s batting for six years•ICC via Getty Images

“We now have players across the domestic game putting their hand up for selection, which is testament to the regional game, and we have real strength in depth, and that’s so important.”Heather Knight, England’s captain, added: “It is such a massive opportunity for us and for the game to compete in the Commonwealth Games, especially on home soil.”When you’re younger you watch these multi-sport events but, as a cricketer, you don’t imagine you’ll be out there representing Team England. It also gives us a brilliant chance to engage some young people in cricket who maybe haven’t played or watched it before.”It’s a hugely exciting squad and for us as a group to have a chance to make history and be the first women’s cricketers to medal at the Commonwealth Games is something that can really drive us forward.”The Commonwealth Games will be hosted at Edgbaston and screened live on the BBC, with England’s first fixture against Sri Lanka on Saturday, July 30.

Lost the ball 20x: Pep must drop 4/10 Man City dud who was worse than Nunes

A defeat on derby day is always something of a disaster, but Manchester City’s loss to Manchester United yesterday afternoon was something else entirely.

Pep Guardiola’s side are going through a crisis the likes of which they haven’t experienced under the Spanish coach before.

The Citizens have now lost eight of their last 11 games and look a shadow of their former selves, and yesterday was no exception.

There were poor performances across the pitch for the hosts, but two players, including Matheus Nunes, stood out for all the wrong reasons.

Nunes performance vs United

Now, the first thing to say is that much of the blame for Nunes’ poor showing should be shouldered by Guardiola, as injuries to the squad saw him start the Brazilian at left-back, which is a position he had never played before.

With that said, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers’ inexperience cannot be used as an excuse for his lack of impact throughout most of the game nor his costly mistakes at the end.

For example, while the team as a whole must face the blame for losing last night, it was the 26-year-old who gave away the equalising penalty for a foul on Amad Diallo, who had intercepted his lazy backpass.

Then, less than two minutes later, he failed to get back and clear the Ivorian’s match-winning effort off the line despite appearing to have the time to do so.

Unsurprisingly, such a display saw GIVEMESPORT’s Kerrie Jacobs-Bryant award him a 4/10, which seems more than fair considering his mistakes.

However, while Nunes turned a mediocre performance into a disastrous one in the final five minutes, one of his teammates was poor for the entire game and must not start for City again.

The City dud worse than Nunes

Now, as we said earlier, there were underwhelming performances all over the pitch for the hosts last night, but the worst was undoubtedly Kyle Walker.

The City captain has been lacklustre for some time now, but was notably poor yesterday.

The former Tottenham Hotspurs star was utterly ineffective going forward and, like Nunes, was a disaster in defence, strolling into the box for Diallo’s winning goal.

In fact, the most notable thing he did during the game was feign a head injury during his confrontation with Rasmus Hojlund, an incident Roy Keane said must have left him feeling “embarrassed” after the game.

Such a display left Jacobs-Bryant equally unimpressed, as she awarded the Englishman a 4/10 match rating at full-time and doubled down on the ’embarrasing’ nature of the Hojlund incident.

However, when we look at his statistics from the game, it can be argued that the 4/10 rating is still too generous.

For example, in his 96 minutes of action, the Sheffield-born defender amassed an expected assists figure of 0.03, made just one block, one tackle and one clearance, lost 50% of his ground duels, lost the ball a staggering 20 times, maintained a passing accuracy of just 76%, misplaced nine of 11 long passes and failed 50% of his dribbles.

Ultimately, while the entire City team were poor against United yesterday, Nunes, and particularly Walker, stood out as the worst of the worst, and while the Brazilian may have to keep his place in the team, Pep must drop the Englishman.

Anya Shrubsole retires from international cricket

Anya Shrubsole has announced her retirement from international cricket, calling time on her career at the top level after 14 years.Shrubsole, the hero of England’s 2017 World Cup triumph, was awarded an MBE after bowling her side to a famous and dramatic victory with a record 6 for 46 in the final against India at Lord’s. She is fourth on the list of England’s ODI wicket-takers, and is England’s current top T20I wicket-taker.She will continue to play domestic cricket in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, Charlotte Edwards Cup and the Hundred.”I feel immensely privileged to have been able to represent my country for the past 14 years,” Shrubsole said. “To have been involved in women’s cricket at a time of such growth has been an honour but it has become clear to me that it is moving forward faster than I can keep up with, so it is time for me to step away.”Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would be lucky enough to play for England for so long, I’d have been happy with one game. There have been many ups and downs along the way but it was all worth it to be able to lift the ICC Women’s World Cup at Lord’s in 2017.”There have been so many people who have supported me along the way and I want to thank them all for everything they have done, but most of all I couldn’t have done it without the unwavering support of my family. They have been with me every step of the way and I simply couldn’t have done it without them.”Shrubsole captained her country once, and in 2018 became the first woman ever to appear on the front cover of the .After a 2021 home international season curtailed by injury, Shrubsole was part of England’s Ashes campaign in Australia at the start of this year, and her last appearance for England was during the 2022 Women’s World Cup final in New Zealand, when she took 3 for 46 and was the last batter out in a 71-run defeat at the hands of Australia on April 3.Clare Connor, ECB managing director of women’s cricket, described Shrubsole as “the most tremendous servant to English cricket, and to women’s cricket specifically”.”For 14 years she has given everything for the team so it is fitting that her reasons for retiring are so selfless,” Connor added. “In her last game for England – the ICC Women’s World Cup final in Christchurch – Anya was the team’s stand-out performer with the ball, just as she was on that magical day at Lord’s in 2017 when England Women lifted the World Cup.”Her longevity, skill and impact with the new and old ball are testament to her work ethic and commitment over so many years. Aside from her genius with the ball, Anya was the perfect team-mate – selfless, dedicated, thoughtful and kind. She has already dedicated 14 years to England Women’s cricket and I know that she will continue to have a huge impact on the game post-playing.”Anya loves the game as much as anyone I’ve ever met and we look forward to retaining her expertise and passion as she embarks on her next chapter.”
