Hoping to prove to the world we're strong enough to win World T20 – Tryon

After leading South Africa women to a 2-2 draw against the world champions at their home, Chloe Tryon hoped the team would be battle-ready at the World T20

Cricket Australia

South Africa women have reached two semi-finals in world tournaments in the last four years, and allrounder Chloe Tryon believes they are good enough to go a step further and become the first South African cricket team to claim a world title when they go to the Caribbean for the Women’s World T20 in November.”We know that we are good enough to win the tournament and we are hoping to prove to the world that we are that strong,” Tryon said. “We want to go there and win the competition. But we are not going to get carried away – we’ll take it one game at a time.”South Africa just got home after a promising tour of the West Indies, in which they shared the one-day series 1-1 and fought back from 2-0 down to hold the reigning world T20 champions to a 2-2 draw in the T20s. Tryon captained South Africa in the T20s, after Dane van Niekerk rolled her ankle, and reckoned the experience had been a valuable one in the lead-up to the World T20.”We learnt a lot on our trip now, which is going to be important come the World Cup,” she said. “There is obviously a lot we need to work on, but we have a good idea of what we need to do at the competition in order to do well, having recently experienced the conditions.”I felt that in the ODIs we did lose it a bit,” she admitted. “We were doing a lot of the basics wrong. Yes, it is a bit slow here, but we know we should be better. But, overall, I think we learnt a lot from being here. The team has grown a lot from the ODIs and coming back from 2-0 down to level the series, so I’m really excited to go home, work on those things and come back ready for the World Cup.”Looking back at the ODIs, we were unlucky with the one game that got rained out. I felt we were in a position where we could win that game, and unfortunately, conditions are something you cannot control. It was a bit of a challenge, but the way we went about it was really good. It’s just a few things to work on, but it’s nice to go home with the series shared.”Her rapid 31 in the final T20 tipped that match decisively in South Africa’s favour, but Tryon’s returns from the series were middling, and she said she would spend the two weeks until South Africa’s departure for the World T20 honing her role as the team’s finisher.”I still feel that I can finish off games more,” she said. “I do want to be the match-winner for the team. Obviously, there’s still a lot to work on. I still feel that I lose a bit of concentration now and then, but I need to be more focussed if I want to be there for the team at the crucial stages in the end.Apart from acclimatising the team to conditions they are hoping to prosper in next month, the trip to the Caribbean also allowed the coach and selectors a good look at some of South Africa’s rookies. Three of them – Tumi Sekhukhune, Robyn Searle and Saarah Smith – could make their World Cup debuts as a result.”I felt they did really well,” Tryon said of the new players. “I’m very impressed with Tumi, Saarah stood up when we needed her the most. Robyn and Faye [Tunnicliffe] did really well in the last game, so it’s nice that these girls got some opportunity in the middle. I hope they can now take it back home and know what it means to be here and the level we play at.”

ScorecardLiam Livingstone demolished the Derbyshire Falcons with a brilliant century off 49 balls as Lancashire Lightning bounced back in style with a nine wicket victory in the Vitality T20 Blast at Derby. After Thursday’s defeat to Worcestershire Rapids, the Lightning needed to respond and they delivered by restricting the Falcons to 161 for 4 before Livingstone and Alex Davies surged towards the finishing line on a tide of boundaries.Wayne Madsen made an unbeaten 76 from 49 balls and Calum Macleod 44 on his debut but the Lightning bowled well with Toby Lester taking 1 for 10 in his first T20 appearance as the visitors won with 33 balls to spare. The Falcons struggled from the start, losing a wicket after being put in to the fourth ball of the innings when Ben Slater was run out by a direct hit from Steven Croft at point and Matt Critchley went three overs later when he drove Lester to extra cover.

Lester showed good control and although MacLeod marked his first appearance for the Falcons by driving Jordan Clark into the seats at the City End, the home side were in need of acceleration at 62 for 2 after 10 overs.Madsen scored four 50’s in last season’s Blast and he twice drove Matt Parkinson down the ground for boundaries before pulling James Faulkner just past a fielder at deep backward square for another four.MacLeod swept Livingstone to the fine leg boundary and the Lightning’s ground fielding was starting to look ragged as the third wicket pair moved through the gears. But when Macleod tried to cut Jordan Clark and was caught behind in the 15th over, the Lightning reeled the Falcons back in with only 27 runs coming from four overs.Madsen broke free by cutting Clark over the wicketkeeper for six and Alex Hughes pulled his first ball from Faulkner for six as 30 came from the last two overs.Livingstone launched the chase by driving Wahib Riaz into the sightscreen and Davies pulled Lockie Ferguson for four before driving Wayne Madsen over long off for six.The Lightning’s skipper cut and pulled Ravi Rampaul for boundaries and the game was running away from the Falcons as Livingstone and Davies plundered 17 from Hardus Viljoen’s first over.Livingstone reached 50 off 28 balls and celebrated by driving and pulling Critchley for consecutive sixes as the Lightning passed 100 in only the ninth over.Davies reached 50 off 35 balls before Livingstone smashed Viljoen for three sixes to complete a superb century and although he was caught at slip in the 15th over after smashing nine fours and seven sixes, the game had long been over as a contest

Leeds: Marsch had a mare by selling 6 ft ‘animal’ who’s better than Byram

Leeds United boss Daniel Farke moved to sign one of his – and the club's – former players during the summer transfer window, as Sam Byram made his return to Elland Road after coming through the academy system as a youngster.

The ex-Norwich City defender arrived on a free transfer and has enjoyed a strong start to his second stint in west Yorkshire under the German head coach.

However, things could have been different if Jesse Marsch had not fumbled an exceptional young talent in Byram's position ahead of the 2022/23 campaign – Leif Davis.

How much did Leeds sell Leif Davis for?

Leeds reportedly sold the academy graduate to Ipswich Town for a fee just in excess of £1m and that figure is starting to look like a huge bargain for the Tractor Boys.

Former Leeds defender Leif Davis.

Marsch cashed in on the 23-year-old left-back and that has turned out to be a nightmare of a decision by the former Whites boss as he is now better than Byram and would have been an excellent option for Farke to call upon at the back.

If the former RB Leipzig tactician had a bit more patience with the young defender then the club could have profited from his development on the pitch, instead of moving him on so quickly.

How many chances has Leif Davis created this season?

The Ipswich star, who assisted a staggering 14 goals from full-back in League One last term, has created an eye-catching 23 chances in seven Championship matches this season.

Davis has produced 3.3 key passes per game and produced two 'big chances' for his teammates in the second tier since his side's promotion from the third division.

Ipswich defender Leif Davis.

The 6-foot ace, who has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.47, has also showcased his ability to consistently disrupt opposition attacks with his defensive quality.

As per Sofascore, the English dynamo has made 3.7 tackles and interceptions combined per game and came out on top in 59% of his duels. This shows that he can hold his own in physical contests and can win possession back for his team multiple times per match.

How many chances has Sam Byram created this season?

Byram, meanwhile, has created four chances for his teammates across seven appearances in the Championship this season for Leeds.

The ex-West Ham United defender has produced 0.6 key passes per game for the Whites, whilst mainly being deployed as a left-back, and this shows that Davis could offer considerably more than him when it comes to making things happen at the top end of the pitch.

Leif Davis' Championship statistics this season:

Leif Davis's statistics this season.

As per Sofascore, the 30-year-old stopper has also made 2.8 tackles and interceptions per match and won 53% of his individual battles in total.

This suggests that the experienced full-back, who has averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.25 this term, has offered less than Davis from a defensive perspective, both in terms of the volume and efficiency of his actions at the back.

Therefore, Marsch had a nightmare with his sale of the English "animal" – as he was once dubbed by former boss Scott Parker – as their respective statistics this season suggest that the 23-year-old talent is a better option than Byram at left-back.

Arsenal: TalkSPORT pundit slams "dangerous" Arteta call ahead of Tottenham

TalkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has questioned a "dangerous" team decision from Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta ahead of their clash with Tottenham.

Arsenal vs Tottenham

This Sunday, both Arteta and high-flying new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou go head-to-head in what will be the most fiercely-contested north London derby for quite some time. Both sides are entering the match on a real hot streak; remaining unbeaten over their opening five Premier League games, though in slightly differing fashion.

Arsenal have had to display the mentality of champions; having clinched narrow wins against the likes of Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Everton despite not being at their best.

Spurs, meanwhile, have showcased their new brand of exciting, attack-minded football under Postecoglou; bagging 13 league goals while standing out as the division's third-most potent scorers overall.

Only in-form Brighton and European champions Man City can boast more goals against than the Lilywhites – a stat Arteta will be very aware of going into the game. Regardless, the feeling around both clubs is one of real positivity, and it will be very, very interesting to see if either side can hand a real blow to the other by dealing an end to their unbeaten streak.

Arsenal team news

In their last two matches, Arteta has made one questionable call in the goalkeeping department. Former number one Aaron Ramsdale had started every single league game for Arsenal since March 2022, but that impressive run ended last weekend against Everton when summer signing David Raya was handed the nod.

aaron-ramsdale-arsenal-market-value-transfer-edu-arteta-sheffield-united

Raya retained his place for Arsenal during their 4-0 win over PSG Eindhoven in the Champions League group stages on Wednesday, with the Spaniard saying Ramsdale will have to fight for his place.

"That's his choice, it's not my choice," said Raya on Arteta's decision to drop Ramsdale. "If Aaron comes back in he needs to fight for the team and to win games.

"I think it's the first time that two top goalies are on the same team. That's just part of football now. The gaffer wants two top players for each position and that's what we have to work with."

Given Ramsdale hadn't previously set a foot wrong, Arteta's call has been questioned by sections of the media, with Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard even publicly praising Arsenal's keeper and reminding everyone of his quality.

Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbanlahor, who regularly appears on talkSPORT, has now moved to slam Arteta's goalkeeping decision ahead of the Spurs game this weekend.

“The dangerous thing Arteta is doing by rotating his keepers is risking them not being up to speed," said Agbonlahor to Football Insider. “One of them is going to be out of rhythm. If they were playing in the Europa League, I could see it – but the Champions League is so tough.

“Let’s face it, I think everyone agrees. Raya is going to be the number one, and Ramsdale is going to be the number two. The majority of the games, come the end of the season – I’m sure Raya will have played 75% of the games – no matter what Arteta says.”

Tottenham could repeat Maddison masterclass with £70m swoop

Tottenham Hotspur have continued their fine start to the new Premier League campaign, and could be set to add to the feelgood factor that the Ange Postecoglou era has already brought with a new face…

Who are Tottenham Hotspur signing this summer?

Already the summer signings have taken to life in north London with ease, as James Maddison has immediately become a key cog in attack, with Micky Van de Ven instantly shoring up the defence.

However, despite those huge strides having already endeared the new boss to the Lilywhites fans, there is still a long way to go before they reach the level they will feel they belong.

Read the latest Tottenham transfer news HERE…

Perhaps in an effort to emulate the success earned with one English maestro, they could sign another by reigniting their interest in Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze.

However, the £70m price tag is certain to prove a stumbling block, with Daniel Levy sure to try and push the fee closer to the figure paid for the former Leicester City star.

How good is Eberechi Eze?

Unloading £40m on the relegated magician, many likely wondered how the signing of Maddison would turn out, especially with Harry Kane leaving for pastures new.

Many knew he was too good to stay in the Championship with the Foxes but could he step up for a European place-chasing side?

Already it seems that those fears have been assuaged, with the 26-year-old instantly assuming the role of Spurs' new star man.

This was especially crucial given the crushing departure of the England captain to Bayer Munich earlier in the window.

With one goal and two assists in their opening three games, it is no surprise that he boasts his club’s highest rating for the current campaign.

This 8.03 average rating is buoyed by a further 87% pass accuracy, three key passes and one tackle per game, via Sofascore.

TNT Sports pundit Joe Cole even noted:

“The more I think about it he could be the best signing of the summer. I am so excited for him, especially the way Ange plays.”

Should Eze join, seeking to emulate this kind of form, it could prove to be double trouble for the rest of the division.

Especially given the 25-year-old is a similar creative livewire to Maddison, having scored ten and assisted four last season in the league whilst also boasting 1.1 tackles and 1.5 key passes per game, via Sofascore.

ebere-eze

His creativity is largely unrivalled, and his dynamic ability on the ball would prove imperative in offering a counter-balance to the technical prowess of the £170k-per-week Spurs maestro.

After all, when compared to other midfielders across Europe, he sits in the top 1% for non-penalty goals and total shots per 90, the top 4% for shot-creating actions per 90 and the top 3% for successful take-ons per 90, via FBref.

This form even led analyst Statman Dave to laud his “dancing shoes” and his dribbling proficiency, which would more than align with the beautiful, high-octane football fans in north London are once again becoming accustomed to.

To snag another English star from a team lower down the table could prove to be repeating a masterclass from earlier in the window, which has already proven to be more than profitable despite the initially questionable fee.

Leeds: Farke Eyeing Huge Firpo Upgrade In £27k-p/w Dynamo

Leeds United head coach Daniel Farke has been able to make four additions to his first-team squad during the summer transfer window so far…

Who have Leeds signed this summer?

The Whites have brought in Joe Rodon, versatile midfielder Ethan Ampadu, goalkeeper Karl Darlow, and Sam Byram to bolster their defensive options, and all three of the outfield arrivals featured in the 1-0 defeat to Birmingham City on Saturday.

Rodon was the most recent signing as the central defender joined from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan deal last week.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

There could be further movement in that area of the pitch, though, as the Yorkshire-based outfit were recently touted with an interest in Burnley full-back Charlie Taylor, who could be available if the Clarets are able to source a replacement before next month's deadline.

How good is Charlie Taylor?

The former Leeds academy graduate, who moved to Turf Moor from Elland Road in 2017, is a proven Championship full-back who also has bags of Premier League experience.

He played 133 top-flight matches for Burnley and played a big role in their promotion back to the big time last season with 33 appearances in multiple positions during the title-winning success.

Taylor, who can play at left-back or centre-back, could come in as a huge upgrade on current Whites flop Junior Firpo for Farke this season.

The former Barcelona dud has been linked with a move away from Yorkshire before the end of the window and it is not hard to understand why the club want to jettison him from the squad when you consider his disappointing performances last term.

Leeds defender Junior Firpo.

Firpo averaged a dismal Sofascore rating of 6.55 across 19 Premier League outings, which was a worse score than a whopping 21 of his teammates managed, and only won 50% of his physical contests throughout the campaign.

The 26-year-old liability failed to produce consistently impressive performances and failed to dominate opposition attackers when it came to competing in battles to win the ball for his side.

Taylor, however, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.89 over his 33 Championship matches for Burnley – a score that would have placed him fourth within the Leeds squad – and won an eye-catching 63% of his duels.

The £27k-per-week dynamo, who was once described as "underrated" by journalist Josh Bunting, also produced solid displays in spite of his side's relegation during the 2021/22 Premier League campaign as he averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.85 and came out on top in 62% of his battles.

These statistics show that Taylor performed to a significantly higher level within the context of the top-flight whilst his showings for the Clarets last season in the Championship also prove that he can deliver quality on a regular basis for a team chasing promotion.

The versatile battler is capable of dominating attackers by using his physical attributes to come out on top in duels in a way that Firpo has been unable to do for Leeds. Therefore, Farke could improve his defence by securing a deal to sign the English dynamo to replace the former LaLiga dud.
