Bangladesh management warn Sabbir to watch his behaviour

The Bangladesh team management have made Sabbir Rahman aware of the danger he faces of getting suspended after he accrued three demerit points under the ICC’s updated code of conduct

Disappointed with Bangladesh’s celebrations – Buttler

The Bangladesh team management have made Sabbir Rahman aware of the danger he faces of getting suspended after he accrued three demerit points under the ICC’s updated code of conduct. He has been punished twice in the space of two weeks since the new system was introduced on September 22, and along with India allrounder Ravindra Jadeja, who is also on three points, will be on a good behaviour watch list for the next two years. This is because if they accrue one more point during this period (totalling four points), it will be converted into suspension points which will determine how many matches a player will then miss. The number of demerit points range from one to eight depending on the level of offence the player is charged with. Four points would equate to two suspension points which means they would miss one Test or a combination of ODIs and T20s.Bangladesh manager Khaled Mahmud said they have told Sabbir to be careful of his behaviour, especially with his celebration that brought him the second punishment.”We have already spoken to him about the risk that he is facing regarding the suspensions,” Mahmud said. “He is aware where he stands. After what happened in the last game, I think he has to tone down his celebrations, avoid doing what he did in that incident. He can obviously celebrate but within the appropriate limits.”Sabbir’s first incident was during the first ODI against Afghanistan on September 25 when he argued with umpire Sharfuddoula over a leg-before decision. The next offence was when he and Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza were penalised for “overstepping their celebration” against England. In another change from the old regulations, after serving a ban the player’s disciplinary slate will not be automatically rubbed clean in terms of the demerit points. The points under the 2016 regulations would hold for the next 24 months, and in case of further penalties, add up and will move onto five and above, reaching the next level of suspension – eight and above demerit points – which then make a player liable to be banned for two Tests. The demerit points would only be wiped clean after 24 months.Mahmud however said that the new system is easier for players to understand where they stand in terms of breaching the code of conduct.”I think the new system is quite helpful to the players,” Mahmud said. “They now know where they stand in terms of the demerit points. Previously he may have been suspended after the second incident but now he has another chance.”

England call-up Batty keeps his eye on the ball

Gareth Batty has been summoned by England for the Test tour of Bangladesh but at 38, and after a decade out of the side, he is not about to lose focus as he leads Surrey in the final of the Royal London Cup against Warwickshire at Lord’s

Andrew McGlashan16-Sep-2016At the end of a week where the future shape of the English domestic game was again at the forefront, it was another reminder that the Lord’s one-day final does not have the lustre it once did. However, the cumulation of the Royal London Cup on Saturday should not lack for quality and a lot rests on 100 overs for Surrey and Warwickshire. This is the last match of Surrey’s season, their Championship campaign having finished with a narrow defeat against Durham at Chester-le-Street but their Division One status is secure. The same cannot be said of Warwickshire. If Hampshire win against Durham, who are now safe, in the final round of matches then Warwickshire will be in a relegation dogfight against Lancashire.Dougie Brown, the Warwickshire coach, has termed it two finals in a week. “We know what we are playing for,” Brown said. “We have two finals in effect. We are the ones who have got ourselves into this position in the Championship but we are taking some pretty good form into the final and we are hopeful we can take that into the game and then into the match next week.”While the news of Gareth Batty’s England recall dominated the agenda, the player himself was determined not to lose focus on a game that will also define Surrey’s season.Surrey failed to get out of the group stages of the NatWest T20 Blast – a particular disappointment for a club that puts such a huge stack on the format on and off the field – while a mid-table finish in the County Championship, although very respectable in their first year after promotion, means tangible success rests on this match.”It is a huge day for us,” Batty said. “It will be the difference between us feeling we have had an okay season – maybe just about average – or that we have just flattered to deceive a little bit. We didn’t start particularly well. We had a good bit in the middle and we have just dropped off in the Championship.”I feel like in this competition we have played some good cricket and we are a good team but Warwickshire are too so we need to be at our best. It would be a wonderful end to a progressive season.”Last year there was heartbreak for Surrey when Gloucestershire pipped them to the title in a thrilling final-over finish. They were on track as Kumar Sangakkara and Rory Burns added 101 for the third wicket, but when Sangakkara chipped to mid-on the innings started to unravel with Gloucestershire’s spinners to the fore.It came down to needing seven off the last over with Batty alongside Sam Curran, who had played a fantastically mature hand, but he fell to the first ball of the over and then Batty swung to deep midwicket. It is something he still takes to heart because of his decision to bowl first.”I made a decision at the toss and we lost a game of cricket on the back of that, I take full responsibility and never shirked away from that but it is up to us tomorrow to play our best cricket.”It has the makings of a superb final, involving a mouthwatering blend of players. There are the current internationals such as Jason Roy and Chris Woakes, the new call-ups of Batty and Zafar Ansari, the great Sangakkara, two outstanding batsmen of recent England vintage in Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott alongside those – Sam Hain, the Curran brothers and Ben Foakes – pushing for higher honours.Hain, the 21-year-old batsman, who is a doppleganger for Trott at the crease, is the leading scorer in the tournament with 528 at 66. Trott has also made 433 runs including three centuries. Surrey’s leading run-maker is Steven Davies with 373 at 41.44 this will mark his final match for the county, having signed with Somerset. On a late-season pitch, and despite the heavy rain which swept through London on Friday, spin is likely to play a key role. Surrey have their two England men, Batty and Ansari, who was a crucial absentee for them last year after breaking his thumb, while Warwickshire can call on the leading slow bowler of the competition in Jeetan Patel as well as the promising legspin of Josh Poysden if they require a second option.

Tottenham Hotspur Have "Exciting" 4-3-3 Boss On Their "List"

Tottenham Hotspur have Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Italiano on their "list" of managerial candidates, according to Sky Sports reporter Gianluca Di Marzio.

Who is Vincenzo Italiano?

Italiano is a 45-year-old coach currently in charge of Serie A outfit Fiorentina having first been appointed there back in July 2021, and so far, he’s been in the dugout at the Artemio Franchi Stadium for a total of 101 matches, but his future beyond the summer is currently uncertain.

The Germany-born boss will be out of contract at the end of next season meaning that now is the time that clubs are likely to come sniffing around for his services having not yet signed an extension, and he’s already been linked with Napoli as a potential successor to Luciano Spalletti, but they aren’t the only ones to have identified him as it would appear that he has another admirer based in the Premier League.

Are Spurs appointing Italiano?

Speaking to Fiorentina.it (via Sport Witness), Di Marzio revealed that Tottenham are monitoring Italiano as one of the candidates to take over from Ryan Mason ahead of the 2023/24 term. The reporter said:

“It’s inevitable that he will end up in the crosshairs of big clubs like Napoli. If De Laurentiis were to bet on Italiano, I would find it normal. I know he is also popular abroad. He is on Tottenham’s list. Many say that Italiano has a €10m clause, but there is no release clause to release him from Fiorentina."

Fiorentina manager Vincenzo Italiano.

Italiano is a less high-profile name compared to the likes of Leicester City’s former boss Brendan Rodgers and Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou who Spurs have been linked with, but having been lauded as an “exciting” manager by journalist Josh Bunting, he could be a promising appointment for the long-term future in N17.

The Karlsruhe native, whose preferred formation is an attacking 4-3-3, has won 50, drawn 19 and lost 32 of his 101 matches at Fiorentina, with results this season seeing his side currently just ten points away from qualifying for Europe, but even before joining, he was busy working his magic elsewhere.

During his time at Trapani and Spezia Calcio, the experienced coach secured back-to-back promotions, firstly in 2018/19 followed by in 2019/20, so knows what it takes to compete and be successful at a high level, so whilst there would be an element of risk to this swoop given he’s not as well known, Daniel Levy will like the fact that he's proven himself and may be willing to give him a chance.

Celtic Could Find Mooy Heir in £590-p/w Teen

As Scottish champions Celtic edge closer to wrapping up a second successive league title, the Parkhead outfit's impressive lead at the summit has afforded the chance for manager Ange Postecoglou to blood the youth of late.

18-year-old sensation, Rocco Vata – who has been linked with clubs across Europe in recent times – has notably featured in three of the club's last four Scottish Premiership games, having previously made his senior debut against Hibernian back in December.

The Republic of Ireland youth international is not alone in having been handed a chance to impress of late, however, with fellow teenager Ben Summers having also made his first-team bow as a late substitute in the 4-1 drubbing away to Kilmarnock.

Those recent nods from Postecoglou toward the youth set-up will likely come as encouragement to the Old Firm outfit's other academy prospects, with the climax of the season potentially allowing further debuts to be dished out.

One such starlet who is perhaps deserving of an opportunity at senior level is another teen sensation in the form of Bruno Davidson, with the 19-year-old – who only recently extended his deal at the club until 2025 – having shone in the academy ranks this season.

Who is Bruno Davidson?

The former Scotland youth international, who is also eligible to represent Canada, has been "causing some buzz" among those in North America due to his performances for the Hoops, according to The Athletic's Joshua Kloke, having been identified as "one to watch" – as per Kloke.

The £590-per-week playmaker has warranted the hype of late after providing 12 goals and assists in 34 games in all competitions for this season, including six goals and five assists in 25 Lowland League appearances for the club's 'B' team.

The versatile asset – who can also feature on the flanks – has been with the Glasgow side since signing from Hutchison Vale back in 2020, with the Scottish Premiership side fending off a host of Premier League suitors to secure the youngster's signature.

That rival interest is a marker of just how highly-regarded Davidson is as a prospective talent, with there a potential for the exciting gem to prove a dream heir to Aaron Mooy as Celtic's creative, midfield hub.

Celtic midfielder Aaron Mooy

The latter man has proven something of a revelation since his free transfer arrival last summer, with the Australian having notably been "outstanding" since returning from World Cup duty, according to Postecoglou.

Much like Davidson, the experienced asset has largely operated as a playmaking option in the centre of the park this season, showcasing his threat in the final third after contributing seven goals and ten assists in 40 games across all fronts.

While the one-time Huddersfield Town man has been "different class", according to pundit Frank McAvennie, at 32 it remains to be seen if he will be a long-term fit at Celtic Park, with only just over a year left on his existing deal.

As such, unleashing young Davidson – who is waiting for his first senior appearance for the club – in the near future could allow Postecoglou to find an ideal successor to Mooy for the years to come.

Tottenham: Sky Journalist Shares Important Pochettino News

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has shared an update on Tottenham Hotspur's chances of re-hiring former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Could Pochettino re-join Spurs?

The Argentine has been heavily linked with a move back to Spurs, even before the club mutually agreed to part company with Antonio Conte earlier this week. The Premier League top four hopefuls are believed to be interested in re-uniting with Pochettino, coming nearly four years after he was originally sacked by chairman Daniel Levy.

Indeed, the former Paris-Saint Germain boss is believed to among the main contenders to take over at Tottenham, alongside the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, who was recently fired by Bayern Munich, and ex-Spain coach Luis Enrique.

Those are just the candidates out-of-work and reports suggest that the north Londoners could also move for another free agent in former Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane. Pochettino, however, stands out as a very interesting link given both his affinity for the club and popularity with Spurs supporters.

Sections of the Lilywhites fan base have been pictured singing his name as they call for Pochettino's sensational return to Tottenham, with Sky journalist Dharmesh Sheth now sharing what he knows on the matter. Sheth says that the 51-year-old will wait until the summer to make a decision, especially with Real Madrid linked.

He explained to GiveMeSport:

“Pochettino has been approached by Real Madrid twice before, once when he was with Tottenham and once with Paris-Saint Germain.

"But because he was under contract at both clubs, he couldn't even talk to Real Madrid officially and take on that job.

"This time, he's in a position where he's not in a job and probably why he wants to take his time. He's taken his time to get back into football since losing his job at PSG.

"I wonder whether he'll wait until the summer – because that's the information we're getting now – to see if it's not just Tottenham who would be interested in him and whether Real Madrid would come back in."

Should Tottenham re-hire Poch?

Called a 'genius' by former Spurs players, it is no secret that Pochettino is a popular figure in north London – especially after his work on a shoe-string budget and guiding them to a Champions League final in 2019.

The former Southampton boss also has a league title under his belt from his time at PSG, potentially growing as a coach in the process.

While there could be some reservations around going backwards so to speak, there are few other managers in world football who know Spurs as much as Pochettino and his status as a free agent makes this move a very attractive one for Levy.

Pochettino ‘designated’ Conte replacement

A report by Fantacalcio has suggested that former Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino is Antonio Conte’s ‘designated’ replacement.

The Lowdown: Conte set to leave?

Spurs’ current head coach, going by developments in the last 24 hours, seems set to depart north London with reports suggesting that Conte is on the way out.

The Italian, after being appointed by chairman Daniel Levy in 2021, guided Spurs to a top four Premier League finish last season but has arguably failed to build upon that success since.

Conte took his frustrations out on both the board and Spurs’ squad in a furious post-Southampton rant last weekend, questioning Tottenham’s very culture.

He stated:

“We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, I see players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart (in).

“Why? Because they are used to it here, they are used to it. They don’t play for something important yeah. They don’t want to play under pressure, they don’t want to play under stress.

“It is easy in this way. Tottenham’s story is this. Twenty years there is the owner and they never won something but why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stays here. I have seen the managers that Tottenham had on the bench.”

The Latest: Report suggests ‘designated’ Conte replacement…

Following Conte’s speech which has sent shockwaves throughout football, noise surrounding a possible replacement for the 51-year-old has only gathered pace.

Pochettino is one man to be heavily linked with the job, and a report by Fantacalcio has suggested that the former PSG boss seems to be Conte’s ‘designated heir’.

In terms of where Conte could go next, this report adds that Inter Milan are currently ‘in the front row’ to give him a chance to return to Serie A.

The Verdict: Perfect candidate…

The ex-Southampton manager is a sure-fire candidate to succeed Conte and we believe he is perfect, especially considering his top flight experience and status as a free agent.

Pochettino has earned real praise for his job at Spurs with journalist Alex Crook calling him ‘ruthless’ and a ‘good man-manager’ when talking about the Argentine’s previous links with Man United.

He would also come back to Spurs with more pedigree and experience having managed superstars at PSG, a club he also guided to a Ligue 1 title last year.

Indeed, it would seem Pochettino really should be the favourite to take over.

Leeds blundered with Brenden Aaronson deal

Leeds United backed Jesse Marsch wholeheartedly after he had saved them from relegation last season, with the American taking over from the revered Marcelo Bielsa and earning safety on the final day.

He would add seven new faces in the summer window, and a further three in January, as the coach completely transformed the squad in his image. It was quite clear that plenty of these were signings of the manager’s choosing too, as four of those names came from his Red Bull family, and three of them were compatriots of his.

Perhaps entrusting a polarising manager like him with such faith and financial backing was an unwise decision, which was proven to be the case when the hierarchy decided to dismiss him just last month.

Javi Gracia has since been named as his replacement and the Spaniard is now forced to work with a team assembled by various managers all with varying plans.

It was this failed transfer business that played a huge role in Marsch’s sacking, as he could not get his players to gel. The offensive side suffered the most, with Brenden Aaronson a common culprit when it came to thwarting attacks.

How has Brenden Aaronson played for Leeds this season?

Having been signed for a mouth-watering £24.7m, the 22-year-old was billed as an all-action attacking midfielder willing to lead the press and create for his teammates.

But as of March 2023, he has just one goal and two assists across 26 appearances in all competitions. His last goal contribution actually came at the start of November, and his only goal was scored in just their third league game of the campaign too.

The USA international has averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.53 in his 24 Premier League outings and this places him 23rd in the Leeds squad, which suggests that the flop has been one of the most disappointing players in the team this term.

As such, he has rightly been lambasted for his lack of potency or meaningful contribution by pundits who possibly expected more from such an expensive signing.

Ex-Whites defender Jon Newsome even told BBC Radio Leeds his thoughts on the output of the American last week, claiming: “But over the past couple of months, since the World Cup, he’s not really produced anything, has he? It’s stats, it’s assists, goals, they’re the departments that we’re lacking in.”

With Leeds having scored just once in their last five games in all competitions, the £45k-per-week dud’s anonymity becomes an increasingly pressing matter with each week.

It seems the club have already suffered a disasterclass with this acquisition, as they went full-blooded all in on Marsch much to their potential regret following his dismissal and Aaronson’s continued struggles on the pitch.
