£51 million star now "working very hard" to join Chelsea via his agent

A marquee player is now "working very hard" to join Chelsea via his representative doing all the legwork, as another pretty exciting transfer window at Stamford Bridge continues to offer many twists and turns before deadline day.

Chelsea fail in Omorodion bid as they renegotiate Gallagher exit

Despite reaching an agreement with Atletico Madrid over the signing of young striker Samu Omorodion, with reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano giving his famous 'here we go' to the transfer as well, the move fell through at the eleventh hour due to contractual issues (Sky Sports).

Chelsea could now offer £150k-per-week ace with Lukaku to seal Osimhen deal

The Nigerian is back on their radar after failing to sign Omorodion.

This has resulted in Conor Gallagher's move to Atletico stalling, as the La Liga side were seemingly going to reinvest the cash received for Omorodion to seal a deal for the England midfielder.

As such, despite his medical being completed and documentation finalised, Gallagher has been forced to fly back to London, as he waits for Chelsea to find a solution and reopen the door for his switch to Spain.

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

“The Conor Gallagher situation at Chelsea remains one of the biggest sagas of the summer transfer window," said Romano in a Chelsea update on Gallagher to CaughtOffside.

“The player is back in London and is now back at Cobham to train today, but not with the Chelsea first-team squad as he’s not considered an important player or regular starter under manager Enzo Maresca. So, after everything was done, contracts ready, medical okay with Atletico Madrid, the two clubs have still not signed the contracts because of what happened with Samu Omorodion.

“Now Chelsea and Atletico are negotiating over Joao Felix, trying to find a solution to the situation. Gallagher is waiting and the deal remains on, but the England midfielder is no longer in Madrid, he’s in London waiting to understand if Chelsea and Atletico can find a solution.

“It’s a crazy situation as Gallagher starts training at Chelsea.”

Felix will be key to this situation, as Chelsea enter talks to re-sign the Portugal international as an alternative to Omorodion. The 24-year-old could indirectly grant Gallagher his desired move to Atletico, and it is believed Felix has already agreed to join Chelsea before deadline day.

Felix "working very hard" to join Chelsea via Jorge Mendes

The player's agent, Jorge Mendes, is apparently in England right now – attempting to get his £51 million client a move to Stamford Bridge (Fabrizio Romano).

Reporter Graeme Bailey, speaking to Chelsea News this week, says Mendes is "working very hard" to seal a transfer to Chelsea on Felix's behalf, so it is pretty clear at this point that the ex-Barcelona and Benfica sensation wants to sign for Maresca.

“I think there is a belief that Felix to Chelsea might get done," said Bailey.

"Jorge Mendes is working very hard on that deal. There is a belief that will happen.”

Strikers survive Jimmy Peirson blitz in cliffhanger to snare two-run win

Stand-in captain Peirson’s quickfire 69 was in vain as Strikers defended 17 off the last two overs

Alex Malcolm23-Dec-2020The Adelaide Strikers have survived an extraordinary innings from Jimmy Peirson to pull off a nail-biting win at the Gabba and ensure the Heat remain winless after three games. The Heat were 8 for 68 needing 83 to win from 40 balls. But Peirson nearly stole the game, smashing 69 not out from 36 balls with seven fours and two sixes. He got great support from Mujeeb Ur Rahman but when Mujeeb fell he had no margin for error.Peirson and Ben Laughlin needed just 17 runs off the last two overs but faced eight dot balls between them as Laughlin couldn’t get off strike in the penultimate over and Peirson was unwilling to risk him getting on strike in the last. The result came at a huge cost for both clubs with Chris Lynn and Rashid Khan suffering hamstring injuries. Lynn damaged his left hamstring running to catch a high ball during the warm-up and was unable to play. The injury occurred after the toss but the Strikers allowed the Heat to change their team as per the BBL guidelines. Simon Milenko came into the side and Peirson took over as captain for the first time in his T20 career.Rashid injured his right hamstring chasing a ball in the 18th over and limped off in some discomfort having earlier taken 2 for 30.Renshaw returns
Matt Renshaw was one of a number of players who left the Heat during the off season and he returned to have an impact early. He entered at 1 for 2 in the first over after Jake Weatherald fell. The standard of umpiring in the lack of DRS in the BBL has been a significant issue this season and Weatherald’s dismissal only added to the dismay. Batting well out of his crease against Xavier Bartlett, he was struck well above the knee roll and was adjudged lbw. Ball tracking had it going well over the stumps. Renshaw and Phil Salt put together a 60-run stand which took 53 balls. But in the context of the game on a two-paced surface, it was a significant stand. Salt nearly ran himself out three times but Renshaw looked composed punishing anything short. But both men fell to Mark Steketee in consecutive balls in the 10th over to leave the Strikers vulnerable.Adelaide Strikers celebrate after Jimmy Peirson’s stunning knock nearly stole the game•Getty ImagesUnderstudy Nielsen steps up
Harry Nielsen only got his opportunity because Alex Carey was ruled out due to the Queensland border closure. But he played a brilliant innings to help the Strikers reach 150. He found the rope more than any other Strikers batsman, hitting three fours and a six on the Gabba’s expansive boundaries. Nielsen and Jonathan Wells combined for 57 in just six overs including 25 off the Power Surge overs. Nielsen holed out in the 19th over to Jack Wildermuth and Wells fell in the 20th to Bartlett. The Heat quicks completed outstanding spells taking 4 for 49 from their combined eight overs and conceding just one boundary each.Heat horror show
It was always going to be a challenge without Lynn but the Heat top order did themselves no favours as they collapsed to 8 for 68. Sam Heazlett guided a catch to backward point second ball to start the rot. Daniel Worrall had the ball swinging late away from the right-handers but stand-in captain Peter Siddle turned to his spinner Danny Briggs for the second over, despite the fact he had been subbed out of the last two games. Briggs bounced back in a big way. He picked up Milenko before Rashid Khan completely deceived Max Bryant and Dan Lawrence with neither able to pick him. Briggs picked up two more in the collapse although one would have been overturned had there been a DRS in place. Tom Cooper was given lbw when he got a huge deflection from a reverse sweep onto his pad. The decision could be the most definitive case yet for the introduction of the DRS in the BBL.Peirson Power Surge pyrotechnics
All hope looked lost for the Heat when they took the Power Surge in the 15th over but Mujeeb did what the top order of his side could not, clobbering Rashid Khan for two reverse-swept fours and a six. Peirson then clubbed Siddle for 23 with two attempted yorkers sailing over fine leg’s head into the crowd. Suddenly the Heat needed just 37 from 24. Peirson should have been run out diving for two but a poor throw and the rule change that allows for the bat to bounce once it had been ground behind the line meant he survived. He clubbed two more boundaries off Wes Agar to reach 50 and reduce the equation to just 23 from 18 balls. But Siddle made up for his mistakes in the Power Surge nailing a yorker to clean bowl Mujeeb. That left Peirson will no room for error. A well-placed two off the last ball of the 18th over was the nail in the coffin. Ben Laughlin faced five dot balls in the 19th over from Agar. It left Peirson needing 13 in the last to win. He paddled Worrall’s first ball for four and found a gap at midwicket to run two and leave just seven to get from four balls. But Worrall hit three yorkers in a row that Peirson hit straight to fielders in the deep. He turned down the single on each occasion knowing that an attempt at two would have resulted in a certain run out. It meant he needed six off the last ball to send it to a Super Over but could not get any elevation, slumping to his knees after finding the rope to leave the Heat two runs short.

O’Neil selling "underrated" Wolves star would be a bigger loss than Neto

The 2023/24 campaign was a season in which Wolverhampton Wanderers’ key players stood up for the count. Despite many fans and pundits predicting relegation for Gary O’Neil’s side, including BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty, they defied expectations. Before the start of the season, McNulty expressed that he had a “very, very worrying feeling” about Wolves; and yet they managed to comfortably survive.

The Midlands side’s 14th-place finish made the season much more comfortable than many thought it would be. With 46 points to their name, Wolves were 20 points clear of the drop, and were close to a top-half finish, just three points off tenth place Crystal Palace.

The performances of their key players were largely to thank for this. The likes of Matheus Cunha performed brilliantly for O’Neil, and, despite picking up an injury which kept him out for several weeks, he still managed to score 14 goals and register eight assists. The Brazilian’s teammates including Hwang Hee-chan also contributed, with 13 goals to his name.

Matheus Cunha scores for Wolves

However, with the transfer window around the corner, Wolves could be in line to lose some of their key players, with one man already thought to be subject to interest from one Premier League club.

Wolves could lose key figure

The player in question here is Wolves’ club captain Max Kilman, who is attracting interest from one of the Molineux club’s rivals in the Premier League. This rumoured interest has come off the back of an impressive season once again under O’Neil.

According to Tom Collomosse, journalist for The Daily Mail, the club thought to be interested in recruiting Wolves’ skipper is West Ham United. Should this deal go through, it would see Kilman reunite with his former manager at Molineux, Julen Lopetegui, who recently took over from David Moyes as Hammers boss.

Max Kilman celebrates

As Collomosse reports, it would take an offer of around £45m for Wolves to part ways with their talisman at the back. The Hammers have shown prior interest in signing Kilman, and last season he was a player that they 'followed closely', before renewing their interest in him this summer.

It remains to be seen if West Ham are the only side keen on signing Kilman. During the summer window of 2023, Wolves rejected bids from Italian giants Napoli, and the 27-year-old signed a new deal at the club, keeping him at Molineux for five years. However, he could now be subject to a transfer this summer if West Ham keep pushing.

Why Kilman would be a big loss

Football analyst H described Kilman on X as “one of the most underrated players” in the Premier League. His importance for Wolves cannot be understated. He played every single minute of their 2023/24 campaign in the top-flight, helping to keep five clean sheets. Kilman was only rested in the Carabao Cup Third Round and played just 81 minutes out of the 90 in the Second Round.

As far as box defenders go, Kilman is one of the best across Europe. As per FBref, the 27-year-old averaged 1.68 blocks and 4.79 clearances per 90 minutes last season. That ranks him in the top 14% and top 20% of defenders in Europe.

Wolves centre-back Max Kilman.

However, he is also good on the ball and averages 0.45 key passes and 0.53 switches per 90, which rank him in the top 13% and 27% respectively. Take those numbers with a pinch of salt, because Wolves are not a side who have a lot of possession, just 48.9% according to Sofascore, the 11th highest in the Premier League. This means Kilman’s in-possession numbers could be lower than if he played in a side that dominated the ball.

If their captain were to leave, it could be a bigger blow for Wolves than losing Pedro Neto. The electric Portuguese winger was superb last season, scoring twice and assisting nine times in just 20 Premier League games. He was one of their key contributors last term, albeit while being hampered by injury.

Reports have been intensifying for months about a departure for Neto. The Telegraph reported in May that Manchester City and Newcastle could pay £60m to sign him, and links to both Arsenal and Tottenham were also reported by talkSPORT in February.

However, they may have already brought in a replacement for Neto, signing countryman Rodrigo Gomes from Braga. The 20-year-old is an exciting prospect on the right wing and could get lots of game time if Neto departs.

However, replacing Kilman will not be as simple. Not only would Wolves lose one of their best defenders, but also their captain who is such a big presence in the side – with former teammate and skipper Conor Coady stating that he is "brilliant to have around and is a brilliant professional".

The in-demand talent would not be easy to replace over the course of the transfer window, given his superb box-defending abilities and his leadership.

Should Wolves lose Kilman this summer, it would be a departure that would be felt right throughout the club. Whilst they perhaps do need the money to help strengthen their squad, losing the captain and key man at the back is not an ideal situation. It will be a fascinating transfer saga and one Wolves will no doubt hope to come out on the right side of.

Dawid Malan drives new team into strong spot with unbeaten ton

Malan 145 not out in maiden century for White Rose since move from Middlesex

ECB Reporters Network15-Aug-2020

Dawid Malan reached his maiden century for Yorkshire•Getty Images

Dawid Malan scored a superb unbeaten maiden Yorkshire century in challenging conditions as the hosts had much the better of day one against fellow Bob Willis Trophy challengers Derbyshire at Emerald Headingley. Both sides have won their opening two North Group games, with Derby leading the race for top spot by four points. However, the visitors, missing the experience of Luis Reece, Ravi Rampaul and Tony Palladino, were unable to capitalise on a couple of openings having won the toss and elected to bowl under slate grey skies.Yorkshire fell to 40 for 2 and 106 for 4 either side of lunch before closing on 280 for 4 from 78 overs.Malan finished on 145 not out from 180 balls and Jonny Tattersall unbeaten on 64 from 142. Bad light ended play early.Fluent Malan’s England team-mate Jonny Bairstow – this will be their last four-day group appearance if they win national limited-overs selection for series against Pakistan and Australia – made 22 having been dropped on nought. The feature of Malan’s knock was his dominant driving – both through the covers and down the ground. He shared a third-wicket partnership of 66 with Adam Lyth from mid-morning to early afternoon and then an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 174 inside 44 overs with a quieter Tattersall. This is the England left-hander’s competitive home debut for the White Rose following his winter move from Middlesex. He hit a friendly half-century here against Durham last month before a match-clinching 73 came against the same opponents at Emirates Riverside in the opening round of this competition at the start of the month. It was a helter-skelter start to proceedings under the Headingley floodlights – they remained on all day.Ben Aitchison had Tom Kohler-Cadmore caught at third slip for a duck, off an under-edge as he tried to leave alone, leaving Yorkshire at 2 for 1 in the second over. In the third, Adam Lyth then pulled South African left-armer Michael Cohen for back-to-back sixes.Bairstow was dropped on nought by Derby captain Billy Godleman at mid-off following an uppish drive at Dustin Melton. Bairstow went on to drive three boundaries – two particularly convincing either side of mid-off – and pull another before he pushed aggressively at seamer Anuj Dal and edged behind. That left Yorkshire 40 for 2 in the 16th over, bringing Malan to the crease. He shared that 66 with Lyth until early afternoon before Cohen, particularly wayward at the start of the day, returned with more vigour to remove Lyth for 31 and Harry Brook for nought within the space of four balls. From there, Derby would have hoped for more rewards, with conditions still beneficial. Swing and seam were apparent, while there was also evidence of a two-paced surface. But in Malan they came across a batsman in serene touch as he set about his 26th first-class century. He reached his fifty off 87 balls and then his century off 136, by which time Yorkshire had gone beyond 200 for a first batting bonus point. The century stand between Malan and Tattersall – playing as a specialist batsman with Bairstow taking the wicketkeeping gloves – had also been confirmed. Tattersall’s innings was understated but a crucial foil for Malan, who later lofted Matt Critchley for six over long-off.Tattersall worked the ball well on the way to a 122-ball fifty and will hope to convert to a maiden first-class century against county opposition.

Celtic were rinsed of £5m by a flop who ‘didn’t like’ Scottish football

Celtic did not opt to splash the cash on any big-money signings to bolster Brendan Rodgers' squad when he returned to Glasgow last summer.

They spent moderately on a number of additions across the board, rather than going all-out on one or two names, and the £9m fee once paid for Odsonne Edouard from PSG remains the club-record signing.

The Hoops have not always had the best of luck in the transfer market when they have decided to open the purse strings to make a statement signing.

Former Celtic forward Odsonne Edouard

One big-money addition that turned out to be a waste of money was Brazilian centre-back Rafael Scheidt, who arrived at Parkhead in the summer of 1999.

How much Celtic paid for Rafael Scheidt

Management duo John Barnes and Kenny Dalglish opted to push the boat out to bring the Gremio star in for a reported fee of £5m ahead of the 1999/00 season.

He had been capped three times by Brazil at senior level earlier that year, which suggested that the central defender had been in fantastic form in his home country.

His performances for Gremio in the Serie A and the Libertadores had seemingly been good enough to earn him international recognition for one of the biggest footballing nations on the planet, as they had won the World Cup in 1994 and went on to win it in 2002.

It was later revealed that Dalglish had recommended the signing to Barnes after watching 'impressive' video footage of the colossus, whilst the former England international had never watched the player live before the deal was sanctioned.

This, on paper, was not a great start to his career with the Scottish giants as he had been signed by two coaches who had not seen him play extensively, which meant that they did not know the ins and outs of his style on the pitch, and that turned out to be a key mistake.

Rafael Scheidt's time with Celtic

The Brazil international turned out to be a nightmare signing for the Hoops and £5m, plus his undisclosed wages, that was wasted down the drain due to his lack of impact on the pitch.

Scheidt suffered from appendicitis before his debut for the club and was then hit with a serious knee injury after a collision with a teammate in training, which hampered his progress in Scotland.

Speaking to The Celtic Way in 2022, the defender revealed that he did not "like" the style of Scottish football, due to the overuse of long balls and physicality, and a lack of touches on the ball for him in matches.

Martin O'Neill came in after his spells with Barnes and Dalglish and Scheidt revealed that the manager told him to change his style of play or he would not play for Celtic, and added that the boss claimed the centre-back was not good enough for Scottish football – a claim he refutes.

The Brazilian titan was then sent out on loan to Corinthians, Atlético-MG, and Botafogo over multiple seasons before leaving Parkhead on a free transfer in the summer of 2004.

Therefore, Celtic had a nightmare with the £5m signing as they wasted that money down the drain on a player the coaches had not seen live, who then went on to struggle with the style of Scottish football – which could have been predicted had they spent more time watching him in the flesh – before leaving for nothing.

Crystal Palace issue brutal response to Bayern Munich interest in Glasner

Crystal Palace have issued a brutal response to alleged interest around recently-hired coach Oliver Glasner, as they look to build a new era under the Austrian manager's tutelage.

Palace flying under new boss

Crystal Palace have been a side reborn under the leadership of Glasner, with the Eagles having won five of their last six Premier League games, including a 4-0 thrashing of Manchester United.

Led by the impressive Michael Olise and rejuvenated striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, the south Londonders have shot well clear of relegation, and can finish as high as 11th should they beat Aston Villa on the final day of the campaign.

Crystal Palace star is becoming Glasner's best player alongside Olise & Eze

The incredible ace has been in superb form this season.

ByJack Salveson Holmes May 9, 2024

There is expected to be plenty of change to the playing personnel this summer, with Olise, Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton all among those coveted by traditionally bigger clubs, but there is the hope that this late-season renaissance is just the beginning of a period of prominence for the Eagles. And they are beginning to flex their muscles.

Parish gives brutal response to Bayern interest

Such has been Glasner's success at Palace that Bayern Munich have reportedly come knocking, with the Bavarian side on the hunt for a new manager after confirming Thomas Tuchel would leave the club at the end of the season.

So far, they have seemingly been beaten to the punch on several options, including Xabi Alonso, Ralf Rangnick and most recently Julen Lopetegui, who is thought to be set to take over from David Moyes as West Ham coach.

Now, reports in Germany have revealed that the Bundesliga giants had approached Palace to see if they could poach Glasner from Selhurst Park, having had good conversations with Glasner himself.

And indeed, they were told that they could by Palace chairman Steve Parish, provided that they paid a small fee of 100m euros (£86m). For their part, Bayern were willing to offer 18m euros (£15.5m) to prise him away from south London, but were astonished at the 100m demand.

Any such move would make Glasner the most expensive managerial appointment by a country mile, with the £86m asking price almost 6x the current record, which Chelsea shelled out to bring Graham Potter to Stamford Bridge from Brighton in 2022.

For added reference, it is the same fee that Manchester United shelled out for Antony (though Bayern could probably be confident of landing better value for money), a transfer which ranks joint 17th among the most expensive player transfers in history.
