Kane Williamson, Taijul Islam star on evenly-matched second day in Sylhet

Bangladesh spinner answered New Zealand batter’s 104 with figures of 4 for 89, with the hosts still 44 ahead

Mohammad Isam29-Nov-2023Taijul Islam kept Bangladesh ahead after the second day’s play in Sylhet, even as Kane Williamson levelled with Don Bradman and Virat Kohli on 29 Test centuries. The left-arm spinner took four wickets to inspire a strong reply from the hosts, who held a 44-run lead at stumps. New Zealand reached 266 for 8 when play was called off early due to bad light for the second day in a row.Williamson held the New Zealand innings together with a patient 104 which he essayed off 205 balls with 11 fours. He kept holding one end up with the middle order, but occasional wickets at the other end restricted his partnerships to only 54, 66 and 78 runs for the third, fourth and sixth wickets, respectively. Bangladesh even struck twice late in the day, when Taijul removed Williamson and Ish Sodhi with the second new ball. He had also given Bangladesh their first breakthrough early in the first session. But earlier, they had lost their remaining wicket off the day’s first ball when Tim Southee had Shoriful Islam lbw. In reply, New Zealand made a cautious start before their openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway succumbed to tight spin bowling. Latham, usually a heavy-scorer against Bangladesh, top edged a sweep off Taijul, which was easily caught by Nayeem Hasan. Mehidy Hasan Miraz then had Conway caught at silly point, where debutant Shahadat Hossain took a smart catch diving to his right.New Zealand regrouped through Williamson and Henry Nicholls by adding 54 for the third wicket. Nicholls remained cagey during his stay of 19 runs from 42 balls, before edging Shoriful. It was the first time in 13 years that Bangladesh took New Zealand’s first three wickets for less than a hundred runs.Taijul Islam (right) got Kane Williamson late in the day•AFP/Getty ImagesIn Shoriful’s following over, however, Bangladesh missed out on a caught-behind dismissal when Daryl Mitchell edged the ball but there wasn’t a convincing appeal from Bangladesh. The Snickometer confirmed the nick afterwards. It cost Bangladesh considerably given the match situation, as Mitchell and Williamson added 66 for the fourth wicket. But Taijul, returning for his second spell, got Mitchell, who made 41 with three fours and a six, stumped first ball to give Bangladesh a much-needed breakthrough at that stage.Williamson then got a couple of lives either side of the tea break. First, Taijul dropped a simple chance at midwicket when Williamson pulled Nayeem when on 63. When on 70, Williamson miscued a pull off Nayeem but Shoriful dropped another simple chance at deep-backward square leg. Nayeem was left bemused but the Tom Blundell wicket in between the two dropped catches probably soothed the pain.Against the run of play, part-timer Mominul Haque removed Glenn Phillips just when he was looking dangerous. He made 42 off 62 balls with five fours and a six, before edging the left-arm spinner to slip where Najmul Hossain Shanto took a good, low catch.Williamson reached his century five overs before the second new ball was due; but as soon as it was taken, Taijul removed him with his best ball of the day. Williamson came forward, but had the new ball slip between his bat and pad. Sodhi was Taijul’s fourth wicket of the day, caught neatly at short leg by Shahadat.

Fatima Sana’s three-for and a combined effort from batters helped Pakistan win the first T20I against New Zealand in Dunedin. It was Pakistan’s first-ever win against New Zealand in the format.Having elected to bat first, New Zealand got off to a steady start before medium-pacer Sana struck in the sixth over to remove Bernadine Bezuidenhout for 13. She then went on to dismiss Kate Anderson in the eighth over and pin Suzie Bates in front in the tenth to leave New Zealand at 59 for 3. She conceded just 18 runs off her four overs.Sophie Devine and Maddy Green then cautiously started the repair job but Aliya Riaz came back to remove the former for a 17-ball 11. Nida Dar then dismissed Georgia Plimmer in the 16th over.Green and Rowe then added 28 off 24 balls to take the total past 100. Green hit five boundaries during her stay and was unbeaten on 43, as New Zealand set Pakistan a target of 128.In the chase, Pakistan openers Muneeba Ali and Shawaal Zulfiqar started slowly, scoring 30 runs in the powerplay. Devine broke the stand in the ninth over, removing Muneeba for 23, following which Zulfiqar and Dar built towards the target.Zulfiqar departed for 41 and Dar for 23, leaving Pakistan with 35 runs to get off 38 balls. Riaz and Maroof came together for a fourth-wicket stand of 39 off 28 balls and finished the job with 10 balls remaining. Riaz scored the winning runs, a six off Jess Kerr in the 19th over.

“Hi all, this is my last resort,” he wrote on Instagram, alongside a video, “but my backpack, which contained my Baggy Green, has been taken from my luggage, which was transported to Melbourne airport and flown on @qantas to Sydney a few days ago. @qantas have said they checked their cameras and have not seen anyone open our bags and take the backpack, however they do have blind spots. The bag is understood to contain two caps, including the one that Warner has worn for the majority of his 111 Tests. In 2017 he was provided with a replacement cap when his original could not be located before his wife, Candice, found it in a bag at home.”I think there should be a countrywide search right now from the Australian Government,” Pakistan captain Shan Masood said. “We might need the best of detectives to get that back.”Because he’s been a great ambassador and he deserves every bit of respect and every bit of celebration for his unbelievable career. He’s an example to openers. He was striking at over 70 which is unheared of, especially for an opening batter, averaging 40 or 50. That’s the Davey I remember – walking out there and taking the game away from the opposition in the space of an hour or two, and doing it for over a decade.”His longevity is something that gets overlooked. Just the bulk of cricket he’s played over the last 12-13 years is pretty much more than anyone else in the world. Every time he walks out there, he’s competitive and ready to go. Just a champion of Australian sport. Hopefully he gets a good send off this week.”Cummins confirmed that Australia would take an unchanged XI into the Sydney Test as they look to secure the series 3-0.

Can shell-shocked India even the odds vs Bazball?

India have been in this kind of position many times before and gotten themselves out of trouble, but England will be no pushovers

Karthik Krishnaswamy01-Feb-20242:39

Manjrekar: ‘Selecting Sarfaraz over Patidar would be an over-reaction’

Big pictureIt’s happened before, you know? It’s even happened against England; the last time they were here, in fact. It’s happened before. India have gone 1-0 down at home, and India have bounced back. This is what India will be telling themselves: ‘We’ve been here before. We trust ourselves to find our way out of this. We trust our methods.’It’s what they should tell themselves too. Change is a fact of life, a constant that India aren’t blind to – note their efforts to embrace the sweep and all its variants in the lead-up to Visakhapatnam – but there’s a reason why they’ve been so successful in their own conditions for such a long time: their methods work, and work exceedingly well, most of the time.Hyderabad was one of those exceptions, rare and freakish. India have experienced something very much like it too – Dinesh Chandimal, an almost stroke-for-stroke precursor to Ollie Pope – and they came back to win that series as well.Related

Anderson's recall comes with a point to prove – even at 41

Who is England debutant Shoaib Bashir?

Batters could have a party on traditional Visakhapatnam pitch

Shoaib Bashir to debut, James Anderson recalled for second Test against India

Patidar vs Sarfaraz takes centre stage at India nets

India have been there, and India have done it. They will trust that they can do it again. And for all of the shockwaves they set off in Hyderabad, England will know coming to Visakhapatam that they will most likely need to keep doing freakish things to repeat that result. Having won the first Test with a frontline spin attack with the collective experience of 36 Tests, they now go into the second with one that’s played a combined three Tests. Three. It’s quite likely that Joe Root will once again bowl more overs than at least one of their theoretically main spinners. For all that, though, have England had a better chance in India than this one since their triumphant 2012-13 tour? India were a team in transition in those late-Tendulkar days, and if they aren’t already in another full-blown transition now, the number of absences they’re dealing with has left them in a not-too-dissimilar situation.Who among Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar will feature in Visakhapatnam?•Getty Images

They’ve already felt the effects of losing experienced batters. Bowlers win Test matches, it’s true, but batters can lose them, in ways that aren’t immediately apparent. India came away from Hyderabad with the impression that they lost that Test match on day two, when their batters, one after another, fell while attempting boundary hits. Eight of their top nine got past 20, and three of them got into the 80s, but none of them got to three figures. The aggression that cost them their wickets also brought them their runs, yes, but you could easily imagine Virat Kohli, in the same conditions and against the same attack, going at a not-dissimilar clip while hitting nothing in the air, and piling up what may have seemed to him a double-hundred for the taking. In Visakhapatnam, India will miss not just Kohli but also KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, two of their three most experienced batters from the first Test. And the loss of Jadeja, needless to say, will leave them without half of one of the greatest spin-bowling duos in history. It’s a massive blow, particularly since India are already without Mohammed Shami, whose absence in Hyderabad left them without a supreme wicket-taker in Indian conditions while also – given their seeming lack of faith in Mohammed Siraj – piling extra overs onto their spinners’ shoulders. It’s a reflection of how good India are that Jadeja’s likely replacement is Kuldeep Yadav, a bowler who’d probably be part of England’s first-choice attack in every Test match, home and away, if they could magically change his nationality. Even so, as good as they are, India are not as good as they could be, and in this lies England’s greatest chance.Form guideIndia LWLDW (last five Tests, most recent first)
England WWDWLIn the spotlightHe averages 21.55, has taken three five-fors in just 14 innings, and was Player of the Match in his most recent Test match, but he’s an Indian spinner in the time of R Ashwin and Jadeja. Kuldeep Yadav has missed 56 of India’s 64 Tests since his debut in 2017, and he’s waited patiently for opportunities like this one. Along the way he’s made himself a more resilient bowler, quicker and harder to sit on the back foot against, while remaining just as deceptive in the air and off the pitch. In some ways he might be just the bowler India need against an England line-up prepared to sweep and reverse sweep everything in its path: a bit more dip, a bit more bounce, and the threat of the ball going in unexpected directions. He sent down 48 overs in Hyderabad, the most he’s ever bowled in a Test match, and there’s every chance he’ll have to go through a similar workload again. Can Joe Root cope with it? And what effect will it have on his batting?Team newsIndia have decisions to make with Rahul and Jadeja out. Kuldeep’s wicket-taking ability or Washington Sundar’s all-round utility? Rajat Patidar’s standing in the hierarchy or Sarfaraz Khan’s unorthodox methods? Is there, perhaps, even a case for Sundar Kuldeep, with either a batter or a fast bowler – Siraj – missing out?India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Shubman Gill, 4 Shreyas Iyer, 5 Rajat Patidar, 6 Axar Patel, 7 KS Bharat (wk), 8 R Ashwin, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Jasprit Bumrah, 11 Mohammed Siraj.1:32

Miller: Bashir debut another ‘no fear’ pick from England

England are going 3-1 again, with James Anderson and Shoaib Bashir coming in for Mark Wood and the injured Jack Leach.England: 1 Zak Crawley, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Ben Stokes (capt), 7 Ben Foakes (wk), 8 Rehan Ahmed, 9 Tom Hartley, 10 Shoaib Bashir, 11 James Anderson.Pitch and conditionsOn the eve of the match, Ben Stokes suggested the Visakhapatnam pitch might offer a little less turn initially than the one in Hyderabad did, before “footholes and stuff like that […] come into play the further the Test goes”. The sun will bake down, though, so it may not take too much time for the pitch to begin showing wear.Spinners will bowl the bulk of the overs, but don’t be surprised if the quicks make an impact. Reverse swing came into the picture the last time England played here – Anderson, Stuart Broad and Stokes took 10 of the 20 Indian wickets that fell – and three years later Shami was India’s fourth-innings destroyer against South Africa, taking 5 for 35 on a wearing pitch where the ball frequently kept low.Shoaib Bashir was named in England’s XI for the second Test•Getty Images

Stats and trivia Ashwin is four wickets away from becoming the second India bowler to reach the 500 mark in Test cricket. Ashwin (95) is just one wicket behind Bhagwath Chandrasekhar, India’s leading Test wicket-taker against England. Anderson (139) is a distant first on the England-India Test wicket-takers’ list. Jasprit Bumrah, meanwhile, needs four wickets to get to 150 in Tests. Rohit Sharma made centuries in both innings the last time India played a Test in Visakhapatnam. A similar Test this time will help him go past 4000 Test runs. He currently has 3800. Root (11,477) has more Test runs than India’s entire squad in Visakhapatnam (10,702). Anderson is set to play his 14th Test match in India, joining Keith Fletcher, Gordon Greenidge, Clive Lloyd and Ricky Ponting in joint third place in the overseas players’ list, with only Viv Richards (15) and Derek Underwood (16) ahead of them. Anderson is also 10 wickets away from joining Muthiah Muralidaran and Shane Warne in the 700 club. Stokes is unlikely to bowl, but if he does, he’ll know he’s three wickets away from the 200 mark in Tests.Rohit Sharma plots India’s comeback•Getty Images

Quotes”Playing in India, we play a lot of cricket on these tracks. It’s not that we don’t know how to reverse sweep or sweep or paddle. On that particular day, depending upon the situation of the team, we as batters take our calls. And it’s very clear to us to bat with freedom. We’ve also practised some reverse in the first game as well, but then, yes, playing out in the centre is a batter’s individual plan, and if the team demands us to play in a certain way we are definitely up for it.”
“The way in which they set the tone for everybody else but also the way they put the bowlers under a serious amount of pressure with a new ball. A new ball is always the most difficult period, but you know, consistently not only are they able to negate that but they’re also able to get the scoreboard rolling at a very, very good rate, which is a huge thing for our dressing room and our batting line-up as well. And I think it’s pretty obvious [there’s] a difference in height between the both of them and I think they complement each other very, very well. Balls that Zak plays on the front foot, Ducky plays on the back foot. So it’s very tough, I think, for bowlers to settle into a rhythm and settle into a line and length against those two. One’s left-handed, one’s right. So the way in which they complement each other is brilliant. And yes, they get us get us off to a great start and just sort of set the tone for us in a Test.”

Gill puts India ahead but England hopeful of Bazball miracle

England 67 for 1 (Crawley 29*, Duckett 28) and 253 need another 332 runs to beat India 396 and 225 (Gill 104, Axar 45, Hartley 4-77, Rehan 3-88, Anderson 2-29)Ludicrous though it may sound, the chase is on. No team has ever hunted down a target of 399 to win a Test match in India, but no team has ever come out to play with quite such indefatigable optimism as this England team.By the close of another enthralling day in Visakhapatnam, England’s top order had already chewed 67 runs out of their requirement in 14 overs, for the loss of Ben Duckett, but with Rehan Ahmed’s promotion in the fabled “night-hawk” role reaffirming their determination to chase every scoring option going, and revive India’s recent memories of Edgbaston 2022, when this same side hurtled to a target of 378 with barely a break of sweat.Related

  • Gill: 'Very important and satisfying to be able to score runs at No. 3'

  • Bazball may be facing its toughest task yet

  • A Gill century that showed his struggle and growth

That they were chasing so many was thanks almost entirely to Shubman Gill, whose third Test century, a gutsy 104 from 147 balls, was his first score of note in 13 increasingly under-pressure innings.Gill came through an extraordinary ordeal in the first half-hour of the day to underpin a second-innings total of 255 that, in any ordinary Test scenario, would be plenty given the lead India took into it. But in the wake of the Hyderabad miracle, and into the teeth of another hard-hitting half-century stand from England’s openers, nothing quite seems as safe for India as it ought to. Notwithstanding the strong likelihood that the magnificent Jasprit Bumrah has another huge contribution to come, Gill’s close-of-play suggestion that India were “70-30” favourites rather underlined their misgivings. That curious unease was present in every facet of India’s play, up to and including the cathartic roar that greeted R Ashwin’s dismissal of Duckett for 28 in his first over of the innings. But with Zak Crawley thumping his drives with front-foot dominance to reach 29 not out from 50 balls at the close, England closed the day as they had begun it – self-evidently up against it, but swinging their haymakers with ferocious conviction.James Anderson brought England roaring back in the morning with the wickets of India’s openers•BCCI

India had an overnight lead of 171 with ten wickets standing when their second innings resumed on a hazy morning, and the conditions could not have been more perfect for James Anderson to bring his peerless new-ball attributes to bear. Fresher than he might have been after just 56 overs of rest between innings, Anderson tore out both of India’s openers in the space of nine deliveries; Rohit Sharma, who played for the nipbacker and lost his off stump to an imperceptible hint of away movement, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the first-innings hero, who chased an outswinger across his bows and snicked a low edge to Joe Root at first slip, for a combined addition of two runs.England’s day could scarcely have started better, yet it could and probably should have continued in an even more remarkable vein. For the first 17 runs of his innings, Gill was a catatonic bag of nerves – his footwork so frozen that even his first scoring shot, a freebie pull through a Tom Hartley long-hop, appeared to have been executed against his better survival instincts. One delivery later, even Gill himself thought he was stone-dead as Hartley thumped his planted front pad and extracted the on-field lbw verdict, but after consulting with Shreyas Iyer and deciding to roll the dice, his speculative review showed the slenderest of inside-edges. There would have been no such get-out had Marais Erasmus raised his finger six balls later, however. With the ball still on a string, Anderson jagged another nipbacker into that front pad, but this time Gill was saved by the on-field decision.Gill began to creep out of his shell once Anderson’s spell was done, and a languid launch for six off Shoaib Bashir seemed to suggest he was finding his feet. But there was another near-miss to come, as he snicked a palpable edge off Hartley, but Root was too wide at a lone slip to lay a hand on it.By degrees, however, the panic dissipated and the good vibes seeped back into India’s innings. With a diet of singles against the spinners, Gill and Iyer began to inflate that lead, on a surface that was notably more benign than it had been at a similar juncture of the second day’s play. The fifty stand had come up by the time Rehan entered the attack in the 23rd over with a licence to rip his legbreaks, but two drag-downs in his first over allowed Gill to rush towards his first half-century in 13 innings, which he duly reached with another pair of boundaries in Rehan’s third over of the day.Ben Stokes took a stunning catch to send back Shreyas Iyer•BCCI

By now, England’s problems had been exacerbated by a finger injury to Root, sustained after fielding a low edge off Iyer in the slip cordon, and with Anderson held back, it took all of Stokes’ ingenuity in the field to coax further breakthroughs from his greenhorn spin attack. And just as in Hyderabad, where his stunning run-out of Ravindra Jadeja had been a key moment of India’s second innings, so it was his own incredible running catch off Hartley that prised out Iyer for 29.Stokes’ springing of the trap was only part of the story, as he put his recent knee surgery to the ultimate test with a turn from mid-off and a full-tilt sprint towards the boundary, before diving at full-stretch to grab the over-the-shoulder chance. The opportunity had been created by his adjustments earlier in the over, as he brought up the boundary riders to tempt Iyer into the big stroke over the top, and duly lured him into a wild hack across the line.Though Rehan had been expensive, Stokes was not about to lose faith in his wicket-taking wiles, and three overs later, England had their fourth of the session, courtesy of another superb take from Ben Foakes, whose peerless glovework has been fully appreciated by his team-mates in this Test. Rajat Patidar’s eyes lit up as Rehan fired down an apparent long-hop, but the ball skidded through low to clip his inside-edge, and he was gone for 9.After lunch, Gill sensed it was time to spread his wings, especially once Anderson had come and gone without great impact. Rehan was launched for six and two fours in consecutive balls to propel him towards his third Test hundred, which he reached shortly after the drinks break with a calm nudge off the hips from Bashir. The look on his face was relief first, delight second, but the importance of his endurance would be all the more keenly felt by the close.Nevertheless, even with the lead pushing past 350, England still weren’t done in their relentless pursuit of wickets, and once again, it was Stokes’ tinkering that tampered with Gill’s poise. Bashir had endured arguably his least effective spell of the match, and might already have made way for Root’s offspin instead, when Stokes made a show of shoring up Gill’s leg-side field, and before the over was done, he’d attempted a reverse-sweep to open up new avenues, and gloved his shot straight up in the air for Foakes to earn the verdict on review.Eyes on the prize: KS Bharat moves to catch Ben Duckett off R Ashwin•Getty Images

The door to India’s lower-order had been opened, and Stokes had enough faith in his rookies to rush straight through it. Axar Patel had batted with poise in an unhurried knock of 45 from 84 balls, but played across the line as Hartley skidded another low-bouncing delivery into his front pad, before KS Bharat and Kuldeep Yadav came and went meekly, with a pair of miscued slogs after a period of resolute blocking.Only Ashwin found the gumption to get the scoreboard moving again, with a block-and-bash 29, and even he required a life at slip to do so, but after Bumrah’s 26-ball duck had ended with a fence to gully to give Hartley his fourth of the innings, Rehan wrapped up the innings with his own third wicket, courtesy of another super low take from Foakes.Where previous teams might have viewed an hour of batting against Bumrah with trepidation, England saw it as a chance to make a dent in their target – and a run-rate of 4.78 was precisely what Brendon McCullum had ordered, with Anderson later confirming that he’d told them to go for the win, even if they’d been chasing 600.Bumrah, inevitably, was a splice-hounding menace with the new ball as he beat Crawley’s edge repeatedly and even got one to scuttle on an off-stump line, but Mukesh Kumar’s poor match continued as each opener scalped a brace of boundaries in his two overs for 19. Kuldeep entered the attack to be planted over midwicket for six by Crawley, while Rehan lived up to his billing with two fours in the final three balls of the day, both streaky but effective slaps off Axar. All manner of records will have to tumble if England are to hunt this target down, but it perhaps won’t be lost on India that when they set the benchmark with their pursuit of 387 to beat England in Chennai in 2008, it was a certain Virender Sehwag who broke the back of the chase with his pulsating half-century on the fourth evening. If he was the original Bazballer, there’s a whole brigade of them charging over the brow now.

Why Manchester United reject Marcus Rashford won't just be a bench-warmer in Barcelona despite Catalans' fearsome front three

The England international hasn't looked like a world-class player for two years, but he could see plenty of game time in Catalunya

Rio Ferdinand was right when he claimed a lot of people were taken aback by Barcelona's interest in Marcus Rashford, "given what he's produced over the last two years". Basically, the forward's form and conduct have made a mockery of Manchester United's decision to give Rashford a new contract in July 2023 worth a staggering £325,000 ($438,000) per week.

Consequently, Ruben Amorim decided just over a month after taking over as manager last November that he wanted rid of Rashford as soon as possible. Frustratingly for United, a buyer could not be found – even after a mildly encouraging loan spell at Aston Villa during the second half of last season.

However, Barca have just agreed to sign Rashford with an option to buy for a fee in the region of £30 million ($40m) next summer – which is pretty much the best United could have hoped for in the circumstances. A transfer fee obviously would have been preferable, as it would have raised some badly-needed funds for the Amorim's enormous rebuilding job at Old Trafford, but United have at least managed to remove Rashford's enormous salary from their wage bill.

Furthermore, there's every chance that the loan deal could materialise into a permanent transfer – because while the general perception is that he'll be nothing more than a bench-warmer at Barcelona, Rashford could actually become a bargain buy this time next year…

'One of the top five players in the world'

United have obviously made a lot of dreadful moves during their decade of decline – and Rashford's colossal contract extension will obviously be remembered as one of them. However, we're not exactly talking about blowing £85m ($114m) on Antony here.

Rashford was playing out of his skin at the time, coming off the most prolific season of his career, having become the first United player since Robin van Persie to score 30 goals in all competitions across a single season. The word "unstoppable" was repeatedly used to describe Rashford during that 2022-23 campaign – and not just by then-boss Erik ten Hag.

Casemiro, for example, freely admitted that he had had no idea just how good Rashford was before joining United from Real Madrid. "In my opinion, especially knowing the player off the pitch, I can tell you that if he's feeling good, he can be one of the top five players in the world," the five-time Champions League winner told .

    'Capable of scoring 40 goals'

Casemiro's claim didn't look that ridiculous during the 2022 World Cup either. Rashford was a major problem for opponents during the group stage, scoring three times in three appearances, and many England fans were perplexed by Gareth Southgate's refusal to start the Mancunian in the knockout rounds.

Back then, it really did feel as if a 25-year-old Rashford was capable of justifying comparisons with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, with Ten Hag absolutely adamant that the best was yet to come.

"There's a lot of room for improvement in his game," the Dutchman said in May 2023. "I'm convinced he could score even more. We supported him where we could, with the way of playing but also in his mental mindset, so we are happy with that. But now we have to push for more, as I am sure he's capable of scoring 40 goals in a season."

Rashford has managed just 19 since then, though, and that explains why there's so much scepticism surrounding his Barca move. However, this is a deal that makes both sporting and financial sense for the Catalans.

    Olmo should be worried

There's no denying that Barcelona would have preferred to have signed either Nico Williams or Luis Diaz as they pursued a wide forward this summer. Rashford was, at best, third on their list of left wingers. However, the lack of a transfer fee should (hopefully!) mean that there are no issues registering Rashford, while there is also room for the Old Trafford outcast in Hansi Flick's starting line up.

Barca have wanted another winger for some time now – and not just to serve as Raphinha's understudy. Flick quite understandably feels that the Brazilian would be best deployed as a No.10, given just how much damage he did whenever he drifted into central areas last season.

Consequently, game time will likely be just as much of a concern for Dani Olmo next season as Rashford. Barca went to an awful lot of trouble to ensure that the Spain international was eligible to play after his arrival from RB Leipzig, but Olmo spent a worrying amount of time on the sidelines nursing niggling muscular problems that hindered his attempts to justify the decision to prioritise his signing over that of Williams last summer.

    Another option up front

Rashford's hopes of regular match action will also be aided by his versatility. He has played up front in the past – sometimes quite successfully – and will definitely be an option anytime Flick wants to rest first-choice striker Robert Lewandowski, who turns 37 just five days after the start of Barca's Liga campaign.

Of course, Ferran Torres did a fine job of filling in for Lewandowski last season, bagging a career-high 19 goals in all competitions, and is more determined than ever before to prove himself a potential long-term successor to the prolific Pole. However, Rashford undoubtedly offers Flick another viable option at No.9 – and that's exactly what the German wanted after being unable to rotate his regulars as much as he would have liked last season.
