Time for Thomas Tuchel to tear it down and start again! Winners and losers from England's insipid international break that proved Three Lions are a million miles away from World Cup glory

The German needs to find solutions – and fast – if England are to meet their supporters expectations and mount a serious challenge in North America

It's getting serious now. We're exactly one year away from the start of the 2026 World Cup and, for Thomas Tuchel, time is fast running out to construct an England squad that he feels is capable of flying out to North America and bringing the trophy home. By his own admission, and the length of his contract, that's the target, but judging by the last international camp of the 2024-25 season, the Three Lions are a million miles off being capable of navigating that final step and getting over the line at a major tournament.

If Andorra was bad, Senegal was worse. After delivering so many high points and memorable moments during the Gareth Southgate era, you could forgive England for a wobble in a World Cup qualifier that they ultimately won. What followed a few days later, though, and after a proper public dressing down from their manager too, was unacceptable. Friendly or not, Tuesday's disastrous showing at the City Ground shows just how much work needs to be done to put things right.

Hopefully the first defeat of the Tuchel era is the sobering wake-up call and reality check that the players need. Talked up, and rightly so, as one of the favourites to win the World Cup after reaching another Euros final, England have regressed, and significantly. Make no mistake about it, play anything like they have over the last two matches and the Three Lions will be lucky to make it through the group stages.

GOAL breaks down the winners and losers from England's final camp of the 2024-25 campaign…

Getty Images SportWINNER: Harry Kane

On more than one occasion at Euro 2024, during another unsuccessful quest to finally win a first men's international trophy since 1966, the finger of blame was pointed squarely at Harry Kane. He dropped too deep they said, he'd lost his sharpness they said. Some went as far as saying he was finished, and that it was time for change and to give someone else a go.

The candidates to step in remain plentiful, but Kane's proved yet again during this international break that he really isn't the problem. Another incredible season at club level that saw him finally end his trophy curse provided further evidence that, in their record goal-scorer, England still possess one of the most lethal finishers in the business.

Granted, he wasn't at his devastating best against either Andorra or Senegal, but the service was severely lacking, to put it mildly. And yet, even feeding off scraps in the second game especially, Kane still managed to score his 72nd and 73rd goals for his country, becoming the first player in England history to score in four games in a row for a new manager. Kane is Tuchel's Mr. Reliable and he remains one of the first names on the teamsheet. One thing he's not is the problem.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportLOSER: Kyle Walker

If Kyle Walker was clinging onto his international career beforehand, it's surely slipped from his grasp now. It would be wholly unfair to rip Walker to shreds, given the service he's given England over his 96 caps, and, at the peak of his powers, there was no better right-back in European football – and certainly not one who could rival his breakneck recovery speed that became something of a comfort blanket for England fans and all the managers he's worked under.

That legendary pace, though, just isn't there anymore at the age of 35, and Walker's dire performance against Senegal should be the straw that broke the camel's back. Switching off like he did for Ismaila Sarr's equaliser, as he failed to sense the obvious danger as Nicolas Jackson prepared to send over the cross, was simply inexcusable.

Tuchel jumped to the defence of the Manchester City defender in his post-match press conference, as he well might, but he'll be asking for big trouble if Walker remains in his starting XI come the World Cup. Take your pick between Trent Alexander-Arnold and Reece James – and don't rule out Tino Livramento – for the right-back berth, but Walker must now be out of the running.

AFPWINNER: Jack Grealish & Phil Foden

Rewind only a year or so ago and the thought of BOTH Jack Grealish and Phil Foden, free of any injury issues, being left out of an England squad would've been unimaginable. Pie in the sky. Surely just a printing error. But when Tuchel named his 26-man travelling party for the games against Andorra and Senegal that was the reality – the Manchester City duo were nowhere to be seen, two of the more glaring omissions that also included another Southgate regular in Harry Maguire.

Given the disappointment of City's season, and the lack of meaningful contributions from the aforementioned, it must be said that fans weren't rushing to the German's door with torches and pitchforks. Based on form alone, there were simply more favourable options.

The drab showings in both matches have at least opened the door to Grealish and Foden winning back their places, not only in the squad but perhaps even the starting XI – of which there's surely now only a handful of guaranteed picks. For Grealish, let's be honest, he urgently needs to escape his current situation at City and ensure he's playing far more regularly over the next 12 months. Foden's position at the Etihad is far less terminal, but he won't need to be told that standards must improve. The challenge is on.

Getty ImagesLOSER: Ivan Toney

As the second half ticked on against Senegal, the cameras kept panning to Ivan Toney, sat emotionless on the England bench. It was obvious why he was becoming the focus – the Three Lions were toiling in a home fixture against a nation ranked 15 places below them in the FIFA rankings and yet, repeatedly, Tuchel turned to other options.

Despite replacing Kane with 59 minutes gone, Al-Ahli striker Toney was overlooked, with Morgan Rogers becoming the most advanced player in a desperate and disjointed system despite the ex-Brentford man being the obvious like-for-like replacement. The 29-year-old was eventually brought on for Myles Lewis-Skelly with with a couple of minutes remaining; it was far too late.

It begs the question 'why'? Why call up Toney, who was an unused sub in Barcelona in game number one of the camp, if there was no real plan to use him, especially when the game was crying out for someone of his abilities.

The forward's prospects in an England shirt really don't look great. With Kane being Tuchel's undisputed leader of the attack, and the likes of Dominic Solanke and Ollie Watkins likely ahead of him in the pecking order – plus the expectation that Chelsea's new signing Liam Delap will soon come into the picture – there's even a possibility that's the last we'll see of Toney in a Three Lions shirt.

Tottenham set to bid £34m for Richarlison replacement who is keen on moving

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to test the water with an offer to sign a potential replacement for exit-linked forward Richarlison, and it is believed the Spurs target is keen on a big move elsewhere this summer.

Tottenham prepared to sanction cut-price Richarlison sale

The Brazilian was linked with a move away from N17 last summer, with clubs in Saudi Arabia displaying a public interest, but Richarlison opted to remain in north London and fight for his place under Ange Postecoglou.

Reports suggest this could be the South American’s final season at Spurs, with Everton said to be planning talks to sign Richarlison early on in the summer window as they prepare for life in a state-of-the-art new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock.

Richarlison injured for Tottenham

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is apparently prepared to take a £20 million loss on the 27-year-old’s sale this summer as well. Tottenham are willing to sanction Richarlison’s sale for £40 million, far beneath the £60 million they paid to sign him from Everton in 2022, according to GiveMeSport.

With Everton lurking in the background for Richarlison’s signature, there are now reports emerging of the Lilywhites scouring for possible replacements. As per CaughtOffside, Bournemouth star Antoine Semenyo is firmly in Spurs’ thinking.

Tottenham set to bid £34 million for Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo

According to their information, Semenyo is one of Tottenham’s priorities to replace Richarlison, following his excellent campaign under Andoni Iraola at the Vitality Stadium.

It is also claimed in the report that Spurs are set to test Bournemouth’s resolve with a £34 million bid for the 25-year-old, who will actually face off against Postecoglou’s side later today, so it will be interesting to see how he performs.

In the build up to this game, Semenyo has bagged nine goals and five assists across 30 appearances in all competitions, with his performances also attracting attention from Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Newcastle and Serie A title chasers Napoli.

It is added that Semenyo is keen on a big move elsewhere this summer, which could hand Spurs a boost. The former Bristol City star has also been praised for his top flight performances this season, especially by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp.

“He’s a lovely footballer to watch”, said Redknapp on Premier League productions earlier this term.

“The manager’s taken him to another level, he obviously has that capability because you saw it with Solanke. I’m just seeing him elevate his game right now, we’ll talk about why does that happen, a lot of it is purely on confidence.

“He looks like he’s enjoying his football, his shoulders are back, he’s relaxed, every time he gets it, he plays with a bit of a swagger. He’s actually a joy to watch right now.”

Better than Zubimendi: Arsenal must regret "losing" incredible star in 2021

Arsenal’s injury crisis in recent weeks has highlighted the need for reinforcements in the summer to prevent such an issue from plaguing Mikel Arteta in the future.

The forward line has been the area most greatly affected in the past few matches, resulting in players such as Mikel Merino having to operate in an unnatural centre-forward role.

Gabriel Martinelli returned during the draw with Manchester United last weekend, potentially easing the blow endured by the boss in the last few months.

Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli

However, the setbacks have come at a cost, all but ending the club’s Premier League title ambitions, with the 15-point gap more than likely too large to close in the last 10 matches.

As a result, it’s pivotal that the board back the manager in the summer, handing him the funds to land his targets, with one player potentially moving to the Emirates at the end of the campaign.

Martin Zubimendi's move to join Arsenal in the summer

Back in the January transfer window, it was confirmed that Arsenal were plotting a summer move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The Spaniard was on the radar of fellow Premier League side Liverpool last summer, but the 26-year-old decided to stay put in LaLiga for another season.

However, journalist David Ornstein confirmed that the Gunners have been in long-term talks to sign the midfielder this summer, following in the footsteps of Merino, who also moved from Sociedad at the start of the campaign.

The likes of Jorginho and Thomas Partey are both out of contract this summer, highlighting the need for added reinforcements in the midfield department, with Zubimendi still appearing to be the number one option.

Despite the rumours over recent months, the club may regret allowing one player to depart North London, especially considering his form elsewhere after he left a couple of years ago.

The former Arsenal star who’s outperforming Zubimendi in LaLiga

Countless Arsenal players have moved to Spain after plying their trade in England, with the likes of Thierry Henry moving to Barcelona after his successful spell as a Gunner.

Another player who followed in the same vein is midfielder Dani Ceballos, who spent multiple years on loan in North London before returning to parent club Real Madrid.

dani-ceballos-arsenal

The Spaniard spent two years at the Emirates between 2019 and 2021, but they decided against a permanent move after he featured 77 times during his temporary stint.

He’s since been a regular under Carlo Ancelotti’s side, featuring 122 times since he returned to the LaLiag giants ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

This year alone, the 28-year-old has made 31 appearances for Madrid as they sit second in the league behind Barcelona, producing various key stats along the way.

Ceballos, who’s previously been dubbed “incredible” by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, has outperformed Zubimendi in various key areas – highlighting the mistake Arsenal made in not signing him permanently.

The former loanee has registered a higher shot-on-target rate along with more shot-creating actions per 90 – showcasing his impressive ability in the final third.

However, the Gunners are crying out for a deep-lying option to regain possession, with Ceballos winning more tackles per 90 than Zubimendi, along with more interceptions, having the defensive quality to operate in the desired role.

Given his form since leaving North London, the club may regret not keeping hold of the 28-year-old, with the Spaniard having numerous key qualities that would bolster the current side.

He will remain as a case of what could’ve been, starring at the top level of European football for Madrid, with Arteta needing to put such a mistake behind him and focus on the future as he aims to end the club’s two-decade wait for a league triumph.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Doue was signed by PSG in 2024 from Rennes. The French winger had been impressive in the league but his three-goal contribution in the Champions League final against Inter etched him in the pages of history. Doue might be a new name on the lips of football fanatics but for Deschamps, Doue was a potential waiting to explode. The French manager had scouted the player since his time at Rennes when everybody who coached him could see the dripping potential and this was when Doue got his first call up to the France squad for their clash against Croatia in the Nations League.

  • WHAT DIDIER DESCHAMPS SAID

He said: "I wasn’t surprised. He went from Rennes, where he was doing good things, to PSG, where there were various steps to take and he took them all. I brought him into the France squad. I knew he had the potential and I’ve obviously picked up information on his personality and things like that. Being capable of doing that at his age in a Champions League final… Bravo. And it means he’ll turn up with a big smile on his face!”

The France head coach further said: "He has the ability to beat people. He has the ability to cover a lot of ground, which isn’t always the case (for players with his profile). That’s why he’s able to play in attack and in midfield. And he’s young. He turns 20 on Tuesday (June 3). Things haven’t happened by accident for him. Everything has been planned and mapped out. And you need that."

Jos Buttler's Lancashire homecoming not going to plan as Durham prevail

Michael Jones, Ollie Robinson lead workmanlike victory at Chester-le-Street

Anticipation abounds throughout Lancashire that Jos Buttler finally has the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to their Vitality Blast campaign. His presence is something to applaud, but so far it is not going according to plan. A second failure in successive nights accentuated Lancashire’s gloom as they fell to a third successive defeat, Durham completing a workmanlike six-wicket victory with 10 balls to spare. Many imagined that Buttler looked jaded as he completed his Rajasthan Royals’ IPL campaign with three successive ducks, so as much as he officially pronounces that he is “fresh and raring to go” for the Blast, Lancashire will be wary of expecting miracles from his prolonged availability this summer following a dearth in which he has managed only seven appearances in five seasons. It is easy to mentally lose touch with a county as your life moves on: that perhaps represents his greatest challenge.Buttler’s second-ball dismissal against Yorkshire was followed by 11 in 10 balls against Durham at Chester-le-Street before a short ball from Bas de Leede rose more than he expected and he mistimed a pull to mid-on.Convert his run of scores 0-0-0-1-11 into a Hex colour code and it comes up as overwhelmingly black, so those of a mystical nature will imagine a subliminal message at work here that when it comes to the Blast, Buttler faces some dark times. There again, to a non-mathematician at least, the sequence looks vaguely like a binary progression in which the next number might be 111 or something. Struggling to connect or destined to succeed? Nottinghamshire, on Sunday afternoon, is next up, both counties are now desperate for a win, and we may find out more. From the broiling crowds of the IPL to a relatively sedate Friday evening in a Durham market town is not an easy adjustment, especially as half of the 5,000 crowd were still queueing to get into the ground for the 6.30 start. When he played his one shot of note – a square cut against Wayne Parnell – cars were still driving behind the bowler’s arm. Many missed his dismissal. WFH Fridays can’t be a thing in the north-east or else everybody would have been skiving off from lunchtime.Blast aficionados will hope that Buttler discovers simple pleasures in the competition – it is the longest-established T20 tournament that should remind him of his roots after all – but Eoin Morgan became increasingly apathetic before he called time on his Middlesex career and, at 32, perhaps even the player himself is uncertain how things will fall 10 years after he left Somerset for Lancashire for more regular wicketkeeping opportunities. As he lives in London, even his home appearances for Lancashire represent life in a suitcase. And there comes a time when everybody has had enough of that – even if you are guaranteed on-trend hotel offerings of customised experiences, digital conveniences and nose-to-tail menu options.Chester-le-Street is not the easiest place to make your mark, a ground where the pitches often demand considerable labour for batting rewards. Lancashire posted 152 for 9, their first six batters reaching double figures but nobody surpassing Steven Croft’s 34 from 30 balls, an innings ended when Nathan Sowter spotted him advancing down the pitch and dropped one shorter to bowl him through the gate.Sowter, who added Tom Hartley at long on, a crucial moment as Lancashire limped to 18 from their last four overs. The sub fielder, Jonathan Bushnell, took an exceptional diving catch on the rope at backward square to remove Luke Wood off Wayne Parnell, who followed up by yorking Tom Bailey.Sowter has the second-best economy rate in the tournament to date behind Somerset’s Roelof van der Merwe and he is already showing that he can prosper on this sluggish Riverside square. Durham’s acquisitions of Sowter and Ollie Robinson, as spritely as ever in making 39 from 30 balls, could not have been much shrewder.Lancashire’s other England white-ball batters also had starts that they could not see through as Durham’s Netherlands contingent made more of an impact than Ireland’s attack managed at Lord’s.Phil Salt made a clean-hitting start then whipped Brandon Glover dozily to deep square. Liam Livingstone was more painstaking, in captaincy mode, changed gear by twice muscling de Leede for sixes towards the Health Club but the third fell short at long-on, much to the disappointment of any over-excitable personal trainers looking on from the gymnasium windows.Durham did what Durham do on Chester-le-Street nights like this, grinding down the target with little fanfare. Crucially, Lancashire’s spinners could not make the impact that Sowter had earlier. Hartley and Matt Parkinson conceded 67 in eight overs. Michael Jones’ met them with comfort in top-scoring with 43 from 33 balls. Successive straight sixes against Parkinson left Durham 38 short with seven overs and eight wickets left and settled the game. Their only breakthrough coming when Graham Clark pulled over a quicker, flatter one from Hartley.Once again, North Group confounds predictions. Defeats for Lancashire, Notts and Birmingham have left it closer than logic suggested it would be with Worcestershire making the most convincing audition so far as the surprise contenders for a last-eight place.

Far more than a Hill of Bean(s) for Yorkshire as youngsters shine

Yorkshire young guns Finlay Bean and George Hill posted superb centuries – 114 and 101 respectively – to ensure their side dominated the opening day of the LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Gloucestershire at Headingley.Left-handed opener Bean faced 153 balls for his second century of the Division Two season – and the second of the 21-year-old’s fledgling career. It was the main contribution in Yorkshire’s 393 for 6 from 91 overs. He shared a stand of 57 with Dawid Malan for the third wicket during the morning and then 153 for the fourth either side of lunch with fellow up and comer George Hill, who then faced 180 balls and shared 111 for the fifth wicket with Jonny Tattersall. It was allrounder Hill’s first century of the summer, with Gloucestershire too loose with the Kookaburra ball having been asked to bowl in excellent batting conditions.Left-arm seamer Taylor stood out like a sore thumb amongst his colleagues with three for 43 from 17 overs, including Tattersall late on for 79. Five overs were lost to evening rain.Play was watched by Yorkshire’s new chair Harry Chathli and also their former County Championship title-winning coach Jason Gillespie, the Australian bowling legend who was triumphant with the county in 2014 and 2015.He is back in the UK for the Ashes and back at Headingley for the first time since leaving. Things have changed dramatically since Gillespie departed at the end of 2016, his side having just missed out on a third successive Championship title to Middlesex. Not only has there been upheaval off the field, results have fallen drastically on it as well, highlighted by this being a Division Two encounter.Only Adam Lyth and Matthew Fisher from the current side played four-day cricket during the Australian legend’s golden tenure. But the performances of two young players who were only playing county age-group during Gillespie’s tenure should serve as indication of future promise.Lyth’s opening partner Bean, 21, was playing for Yorkshire Under 14s during Gillespie’s last year in 2016 and Hill for the Under 15s.Bean has enjoyed an encouraging start to life in senior cricket having returned to the club last summer following a brief break to go and work as a mechanic. He earned a rookie contract on the back of a record-breaking 441 in the second team last year and made his first-team bow in August. He played a trio of Championship matches last September, but was a first choice starter at the beginning of April and scored 118 in the opening round defeat here against Leicestershire.Bean watched on from the non-striker’s end as three senior partners departed before lunch, including Lyth and captain Shan Masood within four balls to Taylor as the score slipped to 33 for 2 in the sixth over. Lyth edged to second slip trying to leave alone before Masood was trapped lbw for a three-ball duck.Bean shared 57 with another left-hander, Dawid Malan, who looked in good order for 28 before being caught behind down leg trying pull Ben Charlesworth’s seam – 90 for 3 in the 17th.But Gloucestershire’s good early work was eroded thanks to their inability to limit the fours, especially to the short boundary towards the East Stand side of this ground.Hill, 22, is more advanced in his development than Bean – a right-hander particularly strong against spin. Hill has been frustrated by his inability to build on starts over the last couple of seasons. But he did here. This was his best of four times beyond 50 in the Championship this season.Bean reached his century off 140 balls midway through the afternoon. But he only faced 13 more deliveries and fell caught at deep square-leg pulling at Zaman Akhter – 243 for 4 in the 53rd over. After tea, Hill moved into the nineties and took Yorkshire beyond 300 by helping Tattersall take 19 from the 72nd over against Gohar, including a slog-swept six over midwicket. He reached his century off 177 balls before falling caught behind off Ollie Price’s offspin. And when Taylor, now bowling with the new ball, had Tattersall caught at second slip, Yorkshire were 368 for 6 after 86 overs.

Forget Heaven: Man Utd must unleash teen CB who's a homegrown Branthwaite

With no Premier League football on the menu due to the international break, most of the talk in the air at Manchester United in recent days has centred in on transfer gossip.

Indeed, the rumour mill has linked the Red Devils with a whole host of new personnel particularly in the centre-forward department, with Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike one possible purchase that is being intently looked at.

Another potential signing that is being talked about non-stop is the ongoing pursuit of Everton powerhouse Jarrad Branthwaite, with the Toffees warrior perhaps intrigued by the prospect of calling the Theatre of Dreams his new home if fresh reports are to be believed.

Man Utd's ongoing pursuit of Branthwaite

New reports seem to suggest that the 22-year-old centre-back is considering his long-term Toffees future having been snubbed from Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad.

A move away from Goodison Park could well boost Branthwaite’s chances of more Three Lions opportunities, therefore, with the Red Devils still interested in clinching a deal for their long-term target, alongside the likes of Liverpool now amazingly taking a look.

A deal would well depend on how much United are willing to splash the cash on the Carlisle-born centre-back, with past rumours suggesting that Branthwaite would be available for around the £50m range.

Whilst that isn’t eye-watering money at the end of the day for a club of United’s prestige to splash, they might have a homegrown alternative already to the 22-year-old that will save them plenty of hassle down the line.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Man Utd are brewing their very own Branthwaite

Everton have reaped their rewards now for persevering with Branthwaite when he was still just a raw, wide-eyed defender attempting to cut his teeth.

Amorim and Co will hope their willingness to launch young and hungry talents into their own first-team picture pays off too, with the likes of Ayden Heaven at the back benefitting greatly from the Portuguese manager’s fearlessness in chucking youth products into the main team.

Now, with the teenage sensation finding himself out of action with an injury, Amorim could look elsewhere for a new starlet defensively, with 17-year-old Godwill Kukonki perhaps ready for his moment in the spotlight.

After all – back in December of last year – Amorim proclaimed that the imposing 6 foot 5 presence was adult enough to “handle the Premier League’s demands”, with the potential for Kukonki to take to the top-flight in a similar way to Branthwaite when he was given his breakout moment at Goodison back in 2023.

The United target would never look back when entering into the Everton first-team picture with seven clean sheets under his belt in league action this season, whilst Amorim’s current selection consistently let him down when looking at the table above.

With Victor Lindelof also out of contract at the end of the campaign, the time could now be right to start gifting Kukonki more and more senior chances away from the stale senior set-up, potentially winning the Red Devils a cost-effective Branthwaite subsequently.

Celebrated for his aggressive front-footed nature by data analyst Ben Mattinson – an attribute Branthwaite has in abundance – time will only tell if Kukonki can go on to prove himself as a Premier League calibre talent.

But, with United’s terrific track record of youngsters going on to make the grade on their side, the 17-year-old well might be Amorim’s next superstar.

BOM INÍCIO DO VILA NOVA

Danushka Gunathilaka's sexual-assault case: three out of four charges dropped

The Sri Lanka cricketer has been in Sydney since he was arrested in November last year

AAP18-May-2023Sri Lanka cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has had three of his four sexual-assault charges dropped by the public prosecutor in his ongoing case in Australia.Gunathilaka, 32, was arrested in Sydney in early November last year, while he was with the Sri Lanka squad for the T20 World Cup. He has since been released on bail and had his bail conditions relaxed. The case has also been hit with delays, with Gunathilaka required to stay in Australia while the legal process is followed. The prosecution successfully applied for an adjournment last month, which took the hearing beyond the six-month requirement for charge certification. But Gunathilaka’s lawyer Alen Sahinovic opposed the delay, arguing his client was being subjected to undue hardship as a foreign citizen with limited familial and social support.Related

Gunathilaka granted bail in assault case

Gunathilaka is due back in court on July 13 to enter a plea. The police facts sheet that was submitted with the original charges stated that the woman, whom Gunathilaka had met through the dating app Tinder, had “feared for her life” during their encounter. Having met at a Sydney bar, the pair had made their way to the woman’s home in the eastern suburbs, where the alleged sexual assault happened. The original charges included non-consensual choking, digital penetration, and “stealthing” – sex without a condom without the consent of the complainant – which is a criminal act under New South Wales law.Sri Lanka Cricket has not wanted to outwardly be seen as supporting Gunathilaka but has offered him significant assistance, including paying for some of his legal costs, though the board has said it was expecting this money to be recovered.Gunathilaka’s cricket career has been suspended since his arrest.
