Yordan Alvarez exited the Houston Astros' game Monday night after suffering an apparent injury while scoring a run at home plate.

Alvarez was sprinting from third base and opted against sliding into home. He touched home plate with his left foot and appeared to roll his ankle after scoring. Alvarez could barely walk off the field under his own power, and was removed from the game as a result of the injury.

Later in the game, the Astros provided an update on his status, declaring that Alvarez had suffered a left ankle sprain.

Alvarez has spent more time on the IL this season than off it, and Monday's ankle injury is the latest blow in what's been a difficult season for the 28-year-old. It's unclear if he'll return to the IL, but with the Astros embroiled in a tight playoff race, sitting just two games ahead of the Rangers who they are currently playing against, the injury could not come at a worse time.

Across 47 games this season, Alvarez owns a .794 OPS with six home runs and 27 RBIs.

Fans in attendance at Wednesday's Pirates-Dodgers game in Pittsburgh will have the chance to see Shohei Ohtani, but the three-time MVP will only take part in one facet of the game for Los Angeles.

Ohtani was in line to make his 12th start on the mound for the Dodgers on Wednesday, but has instead been scratched in favor of Emmet Sheehan, per L.A.'s lineup announcement. Ohtani will instead serve as designated hitter and bat first in the Dodgers' lineup.

Ohtani made his pitching debut for the Dodgers in June, after missing nearly two seasons on the mound following an elbow injury suffered late in the 2023 season with the Angels. Because he has been an everyday part of L.A.'s lineup, he hasn't had the chance to ramp back up on the mound in the minor leagues, as is traditional, and has instead done so at the big league level, leading to some shaky outings. His last start, on Aug. 27 against the Reds, was his best of the year so far—Ohtani went five innings allowing a single run on two hits, with a pair of walks and nine strikeouts.

Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts Says Shohei Ohtani Is 'Under the Weather'

A few hours after news broke that Ohtani would not make his scheduled start Wednesday, Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts updated the star's status, saying that he has been feeling a bit "under the weather" since Tuesday, per 's Fabian Ardaya. Ohtani is feeling well enough to hit, but was uncomfortable throwing during a recent side session, leading to the decision.

The fact that Ohtani will still appear at the plate—and the Dodgers' understandable conservatism around his return to two-way status—certainly makes this scratch less concerning than it could be.

Not even when her daughter was born.On Sunday, 16-year-old Kamalini first won the Player-of-the-Match award for her unbeaten 44 off 29 balls for India against Pakistan in the Under-19 Asia Cup in Malaysia, and then earned a INR 1.6 crore deal with Mumbai Indians at the WPL 2025 auction in Bengaluru. For Kamalini’s family, who watched both events from Chennai, it felt like a dream.”Don’t think we were this happy even when Kamalini was born,” Saranya told ESPNcricinfo. “Kamalini’s revelling in the moment. She’s getting a lot of calls and wishes – her team-mates, coaches have all been calling. She’s feeling very happy. She also scored at the Under-19 Asia Cup and got Player of the Match today, she’s so happy that everything is going well.”There was a bidding war between MI and Delhi Capitals for the teenager, and MI head coach Charlotte Edwards and team mentor Jhulan Goswami exchanged smiles after they won. With her father as her first coach, Kamalini and her brother trained almost every day. A natural right-hander, she was trained to become a left-hand batter by her father, who believed that would give her an edge.The family decided to move to Chennai for better opportunities for both children. Her father even quit his business. Kamalini and her brother joined the Super Kings Academy in 2022 and started training under coach Louis Mariano.A hard-hitting opener who keeps wicket, Kamalini also bowls spin. But Mariano was keen that she prioritised wicketkeeping.”Kamalini has everything you look for in a cricketer,” Mariano said. “Be it defence, shots all round the wicket, back foot or front foot. She also has the ability to clear the ground with ease. Even at 16 she can play the ground easily because the technique is so good whatever shots she plays. The technique takes care of her game. She was destined for greatness right at a very young age.”Mariano was all praise for her work ethic. It’s hard even for Kamalini’s coaches to get her out of the nets. She spends at least five hours at the academy every day.Kamalini has made giant strides after joining the academy. In 2023, she was the Player of the Tournament in the Freyer T20 Cup hosted by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. She captained Tamil Nadu Women in the BCCI Under-15 tournament and was also picked for a special National Cricket Academy U-15 camp in Alur.Making the step up to the Under-19 level last year, Kamalini continued her terrific form. She was instrumental in Tamil Nadu winning the Under-19 domestic tournament in October, hitting 311 runs in eight matches. She followed that up by top-scoring with 79 in the Under-19 tri-series final for India B against South Africa A, which earned her a spot in India’s Under-19 Asia Cup squad.It was right before one of those tournaments last year that Kamalini’s family was coping with tough situation. Her father had a massive heart attack, kidney failure, and underwent an open-heart surgery. While he spent days in the intensive care unit, Kamalini and her brother were under the care of their extended family as their mother cared for their father.Kamalini had the Senior Women’s One-Day tournament to play during this turbulent time.”She’s so mentally strong. Even if the situation had worsened for her dad, she wouldn’t have returned from the tournament,” Saranya said. “She has that kind of mentality. She’s been like that since she was small. She left to the tournament crying, I’ll never forget that. Everyone told her father that he’ll live to see the day she wears the India jersey, and I believed in that too.”Kamalini had an excellent run in that tournament, scoring a century and finishing as the second highest run-scorer. Mariano said Kamalini’s biggest strength is her resilience and “fearlessness”.”She’d still turn up for training every day even when her father was critically ill,” he said. “She even attended a TNCA camp at that time. Her parents made sure the situation didn’t stop her cricket. Along with her skills, her fearlessness on and off the field is the biggest strength. She’s never scared to speak out also.”Kamalini father recovered but hasn’t been able to get back to training with her. Her rapid rise, however, has kept him in good spirits. Her parents’ dream is to see her in the senior Indian team for a long time.”We want to see her wear the jersey consistently,” Saranya said, “And play many games for India and have a long career.”

The Brewers punched their ticket to the NLCS by following the same formula that earned them a league-high 97 wins this season—timely hitting, dominant pitching and elite defense. Unfortunately for Milwaukee, its offense didn’t make the trip to the league championship round.

Milwaukee was held to exactly one run yet again in Game 3, falling 3–1 to the Dodgers on Thursday night in Los Angeles. The Brewers, trailing 3–0 in the series, are now just one loss away from being swept out of the NLCS, a round they’ve reached just four times in franchise history.

According to TNT Sports, the Brewers have the fewest hits (nine) through three games of a playoff series since the White Sox in 1906.

It is worth noting the White Sox won that World Series in six games—although they were able to take two of the first three games, unlike the Brewers, who could be packing their bags for the offseason as early as Friday night in Game 4.

Is “everyone”a suitable answer?

Christian Yelich led the team with 29 homers and a .795 OPS in the regular season, but he’s batting just .200/.294/.233 in the postseason and an even worse 1-for-11 (.091) in the NLCS. Young stars Brice Turang and Jackson Chourio are a combined 2-for-23 against the Dodgers, and Andrew Vaughn—a hero in the NLDS—is still looking for his first NLCS hit.

Milwaukee’s best bat this series has been Caleb Durbin, a bottom-of-the-order option in manager Pat Murphy’s lineup who has three hits in nine at-bats against Los Angeles.

“We’re in a big hole,” Yelich said Thursday after the Game 3 loss. “Our goal right now should be to get the series back to Milwaukee. And worry about the rest later. We can’t look at it as we’ve got to win four in a row. Obviously we do, But we can’t win four [games] without winning one or without winning two.”

The Brewers will try to keep their season alive Friday night with the second game of the NLCS at Dodger Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 8:38 p.m. ET.

Mason Miller is ready for whatever role his new team has in store for him.

The Athletics shipped the 26-year-old reliever to the San Diego Padres in a blockbuster deal before the MLB trade deadline and his role is set to change. The All-Star closer has now moved into a setup role for another All-Star closer, Robert Suarez.

The Padres had three relievers on the National League All-Star team this year and have now added Miller, so things could get crowded in the team's bullpen. That's fine with Miller.

During an appearance on , Miller said he's open to whatever the Padres have in mind.

"So far we've had discussions and I think everybody has kind of came to the same conclusion that everybody has the same goal of wanting to make it to October and make a deep run and compete for a World Series," Miller said. "And whatever that role is, I'm prepared to do that. I know that these guys have had a lot of success here, so it's kind of figuring out how I fit into that equation while also keeping everybody fresh."

The big question since the Padres landed Miller is whether or not he'll remain in the bullpen for the rest of his time with the team. He is under team control for another four years after the 2025 season, and came to the big leagues as a starting pitcher. Given the haul San Diego surrendered to acquire him and the team's glut of high-end relievers, a move to the starting rotation would make sense.

The offspinner grew up watching videos of Lyon on YouTube, and spent this winter consuming as much as he could live, particularly during the five Tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Ahmed, like the Australian, is a twirler who is tall in his action, coming over the top of the ball to impart more overspin than your traditional “doorknob” offie.Modelling yourself on a bowler who has 553 Test wickets can only be a good thing. But Farhan aimed to go one better last season by trying to meet the man himself. With Lyon playing in Lancashire’s County Championship campaign through to July, the 17-year old spotted that his club Nottinghamshire would come up against him twice.Through restrictions imposed by Cricket Australia, Lyon sat out the first meeting at Trent Bridge, but that meant he would definitely play in the return fixture. Farhan circled that as the chance to finally meet his idol. Alas, life got in the way in the form of a Mathematics exam.”I was going to, and then I had a GCSE exam that week,” Ahmed recalls, still a little disappointed. “Notts played Lancashire in Southport and that was his last game. He didn’t play at Trent Bridge. I didn’t get to catch up with him.”I’ve watched Nathan Lyon bowl so much and he’s the offspinner that I always look up to. I see how threatening he is from around the wicket on a first day of a Champo game when it’s not spinning. You’re always looking at how to get the guy out and I worked on it quite a bit last year: changing the angle up and it’s helped me so much already.”Farhan continued his development on an impressive Under-19s tour of South Africa•Gallo ImagesHe ended up getting a 6 in Maths – a B in old money – and further studies will get in the way of his 2025 plans on a cricket field. That Farhan is an orthodox fingerspinner and Rehan a legspinner is no accident, by the way.”Dad said: ‘Rehan’s going to be a leggie so you’re going to be the offie, that’s how you’re going to play in the same team in the future – you can’t be two leggies and one misses out. I want you all to play together in the same team’.Farhan beams when talking about Rehan, who now has 11 England caps across all formats. “I’ve always said that he’s a role model. We live together and we eat together and everything. He’s already a role model that I’ll always look up to.”Two years after Rehan became the youngest man to play Test cricket for England against Pakistan (where their father, Naheem, was born), and then the youngest to take a five-wicket haul on debut, in the second innings at Karachi, Farhan emulated big bro with his own pair of red-ball records.In his maiden County Championship appearance last August against eventual champions Surrey, Farhan’s 7 for 140 in the first innings put him in the books as the youngest to take five or more in a first-class match in Britain. Mentality formed a key part of their discussions.”Swanny’s been very good. He’s always helped me in whichever way. The main thing with Swanny is he’s in the wicket-taking mindset.”It’s not like if he gets hit for a six, he’d go defensive. It’s always coming back. I’ve worked with Swanny more tactically, the different fields and stuff like that.”What sets Farhan apart from his peers – and spinners a few generations above – is his unerring accuracy. Developmentally, he is ahead of the curve. But he has stock deliveries to fine-tune and, taking inspiration from Saqlain Mushtaq – perhaps the first exponent of the “doosra”, which turns away from off stump – tricks to hone.”I’d say at the moment I’m consistent with bowling different balls,” he says. “I think, over time, it’s just about working out what sort of pitch I need to bowl what kind of spin. “I’ve got one coming,” he says of a doosra-like variation. “It’s been on display in the 19s, it’s just about bringing it over to the Champo. I reckon it will take three or four months and hopefully it will come out. It’s just the pace and the consistency of it.”Farhan carries a refreshingly practical outlook for what lies ahead this summer. At 17, he would be forgiven for wanting it all right now. But he appreciates Liam Patterson-White and Calvin Harrison have their own claims to the No.1 spinner spot at Nottinghamshire.
