Leeds United summer signing Ben White already delivering on Victor Orta’s promise

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United defender Ben White impressed again during his team’s 5-1 pre-season friendly win against Tadcaster Albion on Wednesday, and he is already delivering on Victor Orta’s promise when the Brighton centre-back joined.

On the chalkboard

With Pontus Jansson departing for Brentford, the Yorkshire outfit are short of options at the heart of the defence right now, with Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi the only two senior players available.

However, 20-year-old White has arrived from the Seagulls on July 1, and the early signs are that he is capable of stepping up as a starter for the Championship promotion hopefuls during the 2019/20 campaign.

When he signed, Orta explained about the process of bringing the youngster to Elland Road, saying: “It’s difficult to find a centre-back with his quality with the ball, with his pace, he always defends really high.

“With his intensity, and with his experience in League Two and League One, he’s a professional player that’s always passing the challenges of his career.”

Decent showing

White started alongside Leif Davis in the middle of the backline on Wednesday and followed up his impressive debut against Guiseley, showing he has the attributes that were mentioned when he put pen to paper on the season-long loan deal.

The Yorkshire Evening Post gave him a 7/10 rating for his latest display, and they too picked up on his ball-playing abilities as well as some of the impressive diagonal passes he played on the night.

Of course, it was hardly the highest level of opposition, but his fundamental qualities are still there for all to see.

Given Marcelo Bielsa’s lack of options right now and if no other new centre-back signings arrive before the window slams shut, White could easily find himself in the starting XI for the trip to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City on August 4.

He may never have played above League One level before, but he looks ready to take his chance and repay the faith shown in him by Orta and Co.

Everton must secure summer deal for Wilfried Zaha

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Sky Sports News, Everton will meet with Crystal Palace this week to discuss a potential move for Wilfried Zaha ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

What’s the word, then?

Zaha been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal this summer, with the Gunners already said to have had a £40m bid rejected.

According to Sky Sports News though, Everton are now very much in the hunt for the Ivory Coast international as they prepare to meet Palace for talks.

The report does not mention a transfer figure, but it seems likely that the Toffees would also have to meet Palace’s £80m asking price in order to complete a deal.

The Merseyside giants have been relatively quiet in this summer’s transfer window, but turning Andre Gomes’ loan deal into a permanent transfer is excellent business, whilst Fabian Delph could turn out to be a shrewd signing from Manchester City.

A swoop for Zaha, though, would certainly send out a clear message that Marco Silva’s team are ready to seriously challenge for a top-six spot next season.

What would Zaha’s signing mean for Everton?

Some will claim that Zaha has already had his chance at a big club, but his switch to Manchester United in 2013 came far too early in his career.

The attacker has come on leaps and bounds in recent years and enjoyed an impressive 2019-20 campaign – scoring 10 times and registering 10 assists in 34 Premier League appearances.

The gap from eighth-placed Everton to sixth-placed Manchester United last season was 12 points and it is difficult to imagine the current top six being broken up due to their financial power and quality across the board.

The signing of Zaha, though, would be a huge step in the right direction. Everton only managed 54 Premier League goals last season, but it would be fair to assume that Zaha would contribute both goals and assists if he arrived at Goodison Park.

A lot will have to go Everton’s way to complete a deal for the Ivorian, but the attacker would be worth every penny as Silva’s team look for a return to Europe.

Leeds journalist Phil Hay says club would replace Anderlecht-linked Kemar Roofe

[ad_pod ]This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…The Yorkshire Evening Post’s former Leeds United writer Phil Hay is still in the loop with goings-on at Elland Road, and he has provided a four-word response on Twitter when questioned by a fan about whether the Anderlecht-linked Kemar Roofe would be replaced if he left.

What did he say?

Well, reports broke late on Thursday that the Belgian giants were in talks over a move for the 26-year-old, whose current contract with the Championship club is due to run out next summer.

Hay took to Twitter to confirm Vincent Kompany’s men’s interest in the attacker, and was quickly flooded by a deluge of comments from supporters.

One asked the journalist if Leeds would replace Roofe if he did end up going before the deadline next Thursday, and he replied: “They would have to.”

No surprise

All of Leeds’ summer transfer incomings so far this summer have been loan deals – although the one for Helder Costa is going to turn into a permanent £15m deal next year and they have an option to do the same with Jack Harrison – but there has been no sign of a new centre-forward.

Some frustrated fans on Twitter believe they needed a striker even if they had Roofe and Patrick Bamford in their ranks, so it will be a relief for them to know that if last season’s top marksman does leave a successor would be brought in.

Given the duo missed 15 and 22 games respectively between them in 2018/19 because of injury, there is no way that Bielsa could rely solely on Bamford going forward, with only youngsters Ryan Edmondson and Kun Temenuzhkov to back the former Middlesbrough man up.

It could be interesting few days ahead for the Yorkshire outfit then, who were linked with a big-money move for SPAL centre-forward Andrea Petagna earlier this week.

Tottenham fans not keen on £30m Ryan Sessegnon deal

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans are not keen on signing Ryan Sessegnon in a £30m deal, which also includes Josh Onomah.

Goal reported on Monday that Spurs had made a significant push to bring the 19-year-old to the club by tabling a fresh bid prior to Thursday’s transfer deadline.

[ad_pod ]

The deal, the report states, is worth £30m plus Onomah, who has made a total of 32 appearances for Spurs.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino, Goal reports, has made Sessegnon one of his primary summer targets and the left-back, who can also play as a winger, is said to be keen on the move.

However, the latest development has not gone down well with a number of supporters, with some urging the club to save the money for another deal.

Indeed, the club have also been linked with both Giovani Lo Celso and Bruno Fernandes, of Real Betis and Sporting Lisbon respectively, while there is also a lack of depth at right-back following the sale of Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid.

Leeds fans react as Phil Hay says club want Ryan Kent to replace Kemar Roofe

[ad_pod ]Reliable Leeds United insider Phil Hay has told a fan on Twitter that the club want Liverpool winger Ryan Kent to replace Kemar Roofe as he closes in on a move to Anderlecht, and Whites supporters have been quick to react.

Hay provided an update on the 26-year-old on Monday, saying that he was in Belgium for a medical with Vincent Kompany’s men, and was then asked whether the Yorkshire outfit would look to bring in a successor to last season’s top marksman.

The Athletic journalist responded by saying United want Kent from the Reds, which is confusing in many ways given he has tended to play out wide during his career to date.

Of course, Roofe was a winger when he first arrived at Elland Road before being successfully converted into a striker, and perhaps Marcelo Bielsa’s plan is to do the same with Kent.

However, Leeds certainly have plenty of competition in wide areas already with Helder Costa, Jack Harrison, Pablo Hernandez, Jack Clarke and Ezgjan Alioski all in contention, whereas Patrick Bamford would be left as the only senior centre-forward.

Thogden ranks all 24 Championship away kits in the video below…

While he did find the net against Bristol City on Sunday, he has concerned supporters previously.

It is a situation that has left many Whites fans confused, with more than one responding to Hay’s transfer claim with a similar message explaining that he isn’t a striker.

Everton fans say same thing as Lincoln drawn out as Carabao Cup opponents

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Everton fans on Twitter have demanded that the club take the Carabao Cup seriously after they were drawn away to League Two Lincoln City following the draw for the second round on Tuesday night.

The Toffees haven’t won a major trophy since they lifted the FA Cup 24 years ago, and with their chances of winning the Premier League slim – despite what Leicester City did in 2016 – their best chance of doing so is by winning a domestic trophy, as they did in 1995.

The Merseyside outfit actually beat the Imps in the third round of the FA Cup at the beginning of this year, but they were only narrow 2-1 victors after the visitors ran them close at Goodison Park.

They went on to be beaten by Millwall in the next round, while they were knocked out by Southampton on penalties in the third round of the League Cup last term having overcome Rotherham United at the previous stage.

Everton supporters clearly want to see their club take the competition more seriously this time around – especially as they are facing lower league opposition – and many have urged manager Marco Silva to treat Lincoln with respect.

While one individual said “let’s take it seriously”, another said “take it seriously please”.

The closest they have come to success in recent times is when they reached the semi-finals of both competitions in 2015/16, but having been knocked out at that stage now is the time to try and go one better in order to try and boost their trophy cabinet and give the Goodison faithful something to shout about.

Leeds forward Patrick Bamford has one recurring trait that keeps coming back

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Leeds have had a flying start to the season and currently sit top of the Championship after the opening four games.

The Whites have begun with three wins and a draw, snatching a win against Brentford on Wednesday evening courtesy of a debut home goal for Eddie Nketiah.

His fellow striker Patrick Bamford only mustered two attempts but it was a recurring trait that came back to haunt him against the Bees.

On the chalkboard

Just how Marcelo Bielsa chooses to play Bamford and Nketiah this term will be interesting.

The former struggled to get involved, having just 28 touches of the ball, the fewest number of any Leeds man in midweek.

The striker has got off to a flyer in terms of goals, netting three in four games, even if he did miss six shots against Nottingham Forest on the second weekend.

Bamford has a tendency to miss chances on the evidence seen against Forest but it’s another trait that’s causing him difficulties and served as a particular cause for concern against Brentford.

Considering he had so few touches, the fact he was dispossessed five times on Wednesday is incredibly alarming.

To add to that, the 25-year-old was unsuccessful with three touches in total as he endured a completely ineffective evening at Elland Road.

But this isn’t the first time he’s had a torrid time in this department.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He was dispossessed three times during Leeds’ opening match with Bristol City which carried across from the previous campaign.

Throughout 2018/19, Bamford was unsuccessful with 4.3 of his touches every 90 minutes whilst he lost the ball to a member of the opposition 1.7 times on average across the same metric, per WhoScored.

Bringing someone closer to him like Nketiah could prove fruitful, therefore, as he may find himself holding onto the ball less. However, if he doesn’t improve this aspect he could still be found wanting at times this season.

As seen, that was the case earlier this week.

Leeds loan man Illan Meslier proving to be a pointless addition so far

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Leeds’ business by all accounts was fascinating this summer.

They moved on some key members of their squad in Pontus Jansson and Kemar Roofe whilst replacing them with little more than loan players.

Of course, a number could become permanent with deals in place for Jack Harrison and Helder Costa next summer but it was perhaps alarming that expenditure was kept at a minimum.

Another of Leeds’ six loans that can become permanent in under a year’s time is Illan Meslier.

The Frenchman arrived at Elland Road on deadline day with quite the reputation.

This was a young stopper linked with Chelsea and Monaco in the past with over 20 appearances in Ligue 2 under his belt.

But despite that, he still hasn’t featured for Leeds’ senior team.

Granted an outing for the U23s a week and a half ago, he kept out a spot-kick but that wasn’t enough to earn him a start against Stoke in the League Cup.

Considering it didn’t have much riding on it, it was perhaps a little bizarre that Marcelo Bielsa chose to stay in favour of Kiko Casilla.

The Spaniard became Leeds’ number one after arriving last January but Meslier wasn’t afforded a chance to play against Salford either.

Given the fact Leeds are now out, a first-team debut may be some time away for the 19-year-old.

It could be that the teenager needs time to adapt to Bielsa’s methods but if he isn’t being trusted in cup action, it seems difficult to see how faith will be placed in him in the Championship anytime soon.

For Meslier, he feels like a rather pointless squad member at the moment.

Watch Leeds United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

One of the main issues for Leeds this season is ensuring they don’t break a rule of having more than five loan players in a single matchday squad.

The Whites currently have six on their books and arguably, their summer arrival from Lorient is keeping Jack Clarke’s role on the bench at bay.

Meslier still has plenty of time to make an impact but with Kamil Miazek still at the club and now 23 years of age, perhaps a greater sense of trust could have been placed in him.

Miazek’s potential feels limited without first-team minutes but it would surely have made more sense if Leeds kept their loan quota to just five players heading into the current term.

Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden should feel disappointed with England snub

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

As quoted by The Shields Gazette, Newcastle ace Isaac Hayden has opened up on why he thinks he hasn’t received a call-up to the England squad yet.

What did he say?

The 24-year-old has enjoyed an impressive start to the current campaign in the centre of midfield for Steve Bruce’s side, but missed out on a place in the Three Lions squad for the upcoming EURO 2020 qualifiers.

Now, Hayden has suggested England boss Gareth Southgate’s intent on getting more attacking players into the side has hurt his chances of a call-up.

Watch Newcastle United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “I think the issue is that with the way that England play, they tend to go with a lot more attacking, ‘flairy’ type of players in that area. They rarely restrain themselves – from what I see looking in from the outside, Gareth only really has one or two players who can play in that more (defensive) position.

“Unfortunately, for me, I’ve got Jordan Henderson, Liverpool captain and Champions League winner, who in the last couple of years has really stepped up his game to the levels where he is now. Then you’ve obviously also got Declan Rice, who’s 20, and who has quit the Ireland, so it’s difficult to leave him out.

“It’s difficult for me to get in there, but I think the most important thing for me is to just keep playing the games I’m doing. If I’m playing the games and performing to the required level, then if I get in, I get in. If not, I’ll carry on playing and working.”

Disappointment

Despite claims he wanted to move back to London with his family, Hayden stayed put at Newcastle over the summer, and has shown incredible professionalism in knuckling down and getting the job done.

The former Arsenal academy product can consider himself desperately unlucky to miss out on a place in the England squad. The holding midfield role is a specialist position, and the 24-year-old has taken to the task well under both Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce.

Hayden averaged an impressive 2.9 tackles and 1.6 interceptions in the Premier League last season, whilst Henderson managed just 1.4 tackles and 0.9 interceptions.

If the comparison with the Liverpool star is unfair because the Reds tend to dominate games, then the fact Hayden’s numbers slightly better what Rice produced at West Ham too (2.9 tackles and 1.5 interceptions) should underline how unlucky the Newcastle man is.

Hayden’s biggest problem perhaps? He simply goes about his job with the minimum of fuss. But if he continues to keep up his form over the course of the campaign, Southgate would be foolish to ignore him.

Tottenham turn in classic Jekyll and Hyde display in frantic north London derby

[ad_pod ]

The north London derby has emerged as perhaps the best game in English football in recent years and Sunday was no exception.

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal went toe-to-toe at The Emirates Stadium and there was no desire to sit back whatsoever; this was two heavyweight boxers slinging haymakers at each other.

Indeed, there hasn’t been a 0-0 draw in the game since 1998, and on Sunday, there was a 2-2 draw.

For the neutral, it was brilliant. This was a chaotic, fevered encounter that saw Spurs take a 2-0 lead, only for the Gunners to fight back. Arsenal could have won it. Harry Kane scored a penalty and hit a post; it could have ended 3-3 or 4-4, like that famous derby in the same ground in 2008.

Yet it also suggests that something is amiss in the white half of north London.

This was, at its core, a Jekyll and Hyde performance from Tottenham.

The positives first: Spurs came out like a house on fire and threatened to overwhelm Arsenal with their counter-attacking threat. Mauricio Pochettino instructed his side to sit back, soak up the pressure and break with speed.

It led to both the first and second goals, as the likes of Christian Eriksen, the first goalscorer, Kane, Son Heung-min and Erik Lamela sliced through the Gunners defence like a hot knife through butter. Harry Winks, too, played superbly in midfield, playing the pass that led to the penalty and generally mopping up assiduously in the centre of the pitch.

Indeed, this is a player who can do this regularly; he is an exceptional midfielder and showed as much against the Gunners.

And then. Well, it all stops. Aside from Giovani Lo Celso’s excellent cameo in the second half, there isn’t much more you can give Spurs.

Defensively, they were absolutely atrocious. This is a far cry from the Spurs defence that had Kyle Walker on one flank and Danny Rose on the other. Through injuries and circumstance, Pochettino played Davinson Sanchez at right-back and Rose on the other flank.

Both of them were appalling. Now, this is not Sanchez’s fault. He is an exceptional ball-carrying centre-back and a good tackler. He is a fine centre-back. Yet to pick him over Serge Aurier was beguiling, to say the least; a penny for the Ivory Coast international’s thoughts.

Sanchez struggled and it led to numerous overloads on the right flank and a number of chances for Unai Emery’s men. They had a total of 26 shots on goal, per WhoScored. That’s double Spurs’ number of 13. It was an even starker situation when Spurs played Manchester City earlier this season, in another 2-2 draw. The Premier League champions had 30 shots on goal; Pochettino’s men had three.

This is not how a big team is meant to operate in big games and it speaks to a tactical uncertainty that Pochettino has to fix.

It is all very well instructing your team to counter-attack but it has to be built on a defence that can repel the initial foray forward from the opposition. This is defending 101. Too many times, against both Arsenal and City, Spurs simply allowed the opposition to have a shot on goal.

A similar thing happened in the north London derby at The Emirates last season; the Gunners won 4-2 and had 22 shots to Spurs’ 11.

This is a recurring issue.

Think, too, of the fact that Spurs headed into half-time in that game with a 2-1 lead, just as they did on Sunday.

And yet there was never a measure of control to their performance. Perhaps this was deliberate and designed to bring Arsenal onto them; maybe Pochettino felt his side could manufacture more openings if they continued to cede possession.

Or perhaps it speaks to an inability to control the ball, to get their foot on it and slow the game down.

The best sides in England and in Europe win the majority of their games when they are 2-0 up.

Watch Tottenham Hotspur Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Even if they are pegged back on the stroke of half-time, they regroup, refocus and come out with the same intensity that gave them the lead in the first place.

That didn’t happen on Sunday. There was an inevitability to the visitors dropping points as soon as Alexandre Lacazette hit the back of the net.

That is a major problem for Spurs.

Of course, they didn’t have everyone fit: Tanguy Ndombele, Ryan Sessegnon, Dele Alli and Kyle Walker-Peters were all either injured or not fit enough to start.

But this was a performance that should fill the majority of Spurs fans with doubts.

In isolation, this was a good point for the club, particularly in the context of the second-half.

Throwing away a two-goal lead, though, is a cause for concern; it must be fixed over the international break.
