Transfer Focus: John Souttar has ability to make Joe Worrall a distant memory at Rangers

[ad_pod ]

Rangers are still interested in a move for Hearts defender John Souttar, according to The Express.

What’s the story?

The Gers have been linked with the 3-cap Scotland international previously, with The Daily Record reporting in April he was one of Steven Gerrard’s big summer targets.

The latest report from The Express states that interest has been maintained as the club consider moves for other defensive talents such as George Edmundson.

Do Rangers need him?

There’s no doubt that Gerrard needs to add some defensive reinforcements to his squad in the upcoming transfer window.

Joe Worrall has already exited back to parent club Nottingham Forest and having made just a handful appearances throughout 2018/19, Gareth MacAuley is also expected to leave after his contract expires.

That leaves just Nikola Katic and Connor Goldson, both of whom are good enough to be considered starters but will need back-up across a long hard season with multiple competitions.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

Is he good enough?

Souttar has been a key part of Craig Levein’s Hearts side this season and his form would suggest he is ready to make the step up to Rangers.

Still just 22 years of age, he has an impressive amount of experience already having made close to 200 career appearances for Dundee United and the Tynecastle outfit.

A prospect with ball playing ability who can also stand up to the physical demands of a central defender, he could help Rangers fans forget all about Worrall, whose possession skills left a lot to be desired in his spell at the club.

The Gers dominate possession in most games they play and it’s crucial the ball is recycled through the defensive line effectively and that they do not invite pressure onto them unnecessarily. Souttar definitely has the ability to do that.

The Chalkboard: Virgil van Dijk proved again in Champions League final that no-one can get past him

[ad_pod ]Liverpool are European champions for the sixth time in their history after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 on Saturday night. When people look back on the performance of Jurgen Klopp’s side, special attention will be paid to a defensive line that limited Spurs’ attacking talent to long range shots and set piece opportunities.A key part of those efforts was of course centre-back Virgil van Dijk, whose massive performance again puts him in the conversation of being the world’s best defender right now.The Dutch international proved again to be an immovable object at the back for Liverpool, as he has been for the vast majority of the time since arriving at Anfield last January.Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

On the chalkboard

Joel Matip was the busier of the two defenders on Saturday, another who has produced on the big occasion for Liverpool when needed this season, but then that is the Cameroonian’s role in the Liverpool team.

He actively committed to the threat of Spurs, while van Dijk played a much more considered role analysing situations and marshalling his teammates across the defensive line.

He’s every bit a leader in that department and about as efficient as it gets.

Perhaps the former Celtic and Southampton man’s greatest achievement at Liverpool is improving the players around him. As imperious as he is personally, the solidity he has inspired in the other defenders at Anfield is remarkable, especially considering Liverpool had something of a joke defence prior to his arrival.

He’s helped transform that backline into European champions quality and although Matip arguably deserves the plaudits when considering individual performances on Saturday, it’s van Dijk who has brought him to that level and it’s his presence that allows Matip to defend in the manner he does.

Defining Madrid moment

Spurs dominated possession during the final, with Liverpool happy to soak up a bit a bit of pressure and protect a shock early lead from a Mohamed Salah penalty.

They were wasteful when approaching the final third though, with van Dijk and his defensive partner keeping the ineffective Harry Kane on a short leash and isolating the striker from his teammates.

Reds goalkeeper Alisson did have a number of saves to make, but the best ones were from long range shots and Spurs barely created a clear cut opportunity all evening.

One of the only penetrating pieces of Spurs play came in the second half when Son Heung-min managed to find a burst of pace that initially took van Dijk by surprise and threatened to create the space that the South Korean would need to finish past the goalkeeper.

In typical fashion though, the Dutchman eventually matched that pace and robbed the ball from Son with a well-timed tackle. It was in fact the only tackle that either of the centre-backs made all night but was a defining defensive moment in the match. In a show of his class as well, van Dijk performed his tackle without riskily sliding in or going to ground – in such a high-pressure moment, plenty of other centre-backs would have simply dived in.

No-one was getting past Liverpool. That’s not an understatement either. As pointed out by Opta after the match, no-one has beaten van Dijk with a dribble in his last 64 matches for Liverpool. No-one gets past Virgil van Dijk.

It’s a remarkable statistic that demonstrates just what an asset he is to Liverpool – power, pace, timing, leadership – he has it all and the club’s investment in him last January must be seen as a turning point for Klopp’s side and their eventual European success.

Nice and easy start: Liverpool fans want Man United in first game of new campaign

[ad_pod ]

A number of Liverpool fans are keen for their club to begin their 2019-20 Premier League campaign with a clash against Manchester United.

The fixtures for the new season will be released on June 13 and the Liverpool supporters were asked by the club’s official Twitter account who they would want to tackle on the opening weekend.

A large amount named their biggest rivals, Man United, as the team that they wanted to go head-to-head with in a bid to collect an early three points.

Jurgen Klopp’s side ultimately missed out on the 2018-19 Premier League title due to the incredible form of Manchester City.

However, the Reds managed to gather 97 points to finish second, whilst Ole Gunner Solskjaer’s men ended the season down in sixth after struggling for large periods.

It would certainly be some start for both clubs if they were to lock horns on the opening weekend.

Crystal Palace: Two fixtures standout ahead of 2019/20 season

It’s here, the new season has officially kicked off with the announcement of the 2019/20 fixture list.

It’s now the time for each respective club to analyse their opening and closing day fixtures, periods of difficulty and – of course – when the rival teams are coming to town. So, we’ve been looking at which games should worry teams throughout the campaign and our latest instalment of that leads us down to Selhurst Park.

Indeed, Crystal Palace experienced an up and down season last time out, but ultimately finished a respectable 12th. After a period of consolidation in the Premier League, it’s surely got to be time to kick on. Breaking into the top ten on a consistent basis has to be the aim.

So then, let’s have a look at some fixtures that will already get the blood pumping.

Brighton vs Palace

Up first we have one of the more bizarre derbies in the Premier League, with Brighton set to host Crystal Palace. It’s certainly one that both sets of fans look out for at the start of the season and this one takes place on the 29th of February. A real winter warmer.

It’s one that Palace will look forward to, but with caution. They lost both Premier League games last season, a painful one indeed. In fact, they have now lost three of the last four encounters in all competitions. This must be a particularly damaging stat, given that Brighton finished 17th last season!

The fixture comes just weeks before a tricky spell of fixtures against Watford, Bournemouth and Liverpool. As a result, it may go down as a must-win game, and it’s already raising the excitement.

Arsenal vs Palace

Here we have perhaps an unexpected fixture to feature on the list of dreaded games. However, it comes in the middle of a rather horrific looking run of fixtures. Between October and November, Palace will play West Ham away, before playing Manchester City, Arsenal, Leicester, Chelsea and Liverpool consecutively. It’s a brutal set of fixtures to say the least.

Everyone loves a London derby, but runs of this sort can dismantle a season. Palace will enter each game as underdogs and failing to win a single game could be nothing short of disastrous. Historically, it’s not a fixture that would fill Palace fans with much hope – just the five wins from 45 for Palace in their history. However, a tremendous 3-2 win at the Emirates last season will certainly provide some fuel to the fire.

Palace fans, which fixtures are you looking forward to? How important are the games mentioned above? Comment below.

Manchester United fans unhappy as move to sign Sean Longstaff inches closer

[ad_pod ]

After a breakthrough season in English football’s top-flight, Sean Longstaff seemingly has the world at his feet.

The Newcastle midfielder has been a revelation at St James’ Park since making his Premier League debut before the end of 2018, and understandably has had his name linked with some of the division’s biggest sides.

Reports in recent weeks had suggested that Manchester United were interested in bringing the 21-year-old to Old Trafford this summer, and now The Mirror claim that the Red Devils are ‘confident’ of getting their man in a £25m deal.

Despite appearing to close in on their second major signing of the summer after securing Swansea’s Daniel James, many United fans took to Twitter to voice their disappointment at the potential deal.

Some supporters of the Old Trafford side felt underwhelmed by the prospect of signing an inexperienced midfielder with just nine total games in the Premier League.

Indeed, a few seemed to take the decision to even target Longstaff in the first place as showing “no ambition”, and questioned why the club weren’t in for Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele.

With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side ending a dismal campaign last year in sixth in the Premier League, some United fans felt that Longstaff’s signing was another indication of them finishing outside the top four again next season.

Not Smith’s man: Villa fans are keen for Kalinic to leave this summer

[ad_pod ]

According to French media outlet 20 Minutes, Nantes are in talks with Aston Villa over a move for Lovre Kalinic in this summer’s transfer window.

Villa signed Kalinic from Gent in January with the view to the Croatia international being the club’s number one goalkeeper.

The 29-year-old was initially handed the gloves but struggled to show his best form and was eventually replaced by Jed Steer.

Kalinic’s last Championship appearance for Villa was in the middle of February.

According to 20 Minutes, the goalkeeper could now be heading away from Villa Park this summer with Nantes keen to bring him to France.

The Villa fans have been on social media offering their views on the transfer speculation.

Kalinic arrived at the club with a big reputation but it seems that the majority of the supporters believe that a summer exit is for the best.

Spurs fans unhappy with potential signing of Real Madrid’s Ceballos

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans are unhappy at the prospect of signing Dani Ceballos from Real Madrid after AS claimed that the club had entered into talks with the midfielder.

The 22-year-old is reportedly deemed expendable by manager Zinedine Zidane this summer, with Real placing a minimum €50m (£44.6m) asking price on his head.

Ceballos made just 13 starts in La Liga in 2018/19, and has played a total of 56 times for Los Blancos.

A full Spain international who has won six caps, Ceballos is reported to be a “priority” for manager Mauricio Pochettino this summer, with the Argentine having not added to his squad since January 2018, when Lucas Moura joined the club.

A number of Spurs fans, though, are confused by the wording, with many believing that Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, a player to whom the club have been continuously linked, should be their top target, along with Real Betis star Giovani Lo Celso.

Maxi Gomez could make a terrible mistake over transfer amid Spurs & West Ham links

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Maxi Gomez is waiting to see if Tottenham Hotspur want to sign him this summer as he stalls over a move to West Ham United, per the Daily Mirror.

What’s the word?

The Hammers want the Celta Vigo striker this summer.

Football FanCast understands that Mario Husillos, the club’s Director of Football, remains in negotiations with the Spanish club over the prospective signing as Manuel Pellegrini looks to reshape his squad.

However, the Mirror now report that Gomez is waiting to find out if Spurs will target him as they look to find back-up to Harry Kane this summer.

The Hammers remain hopeful of completing a deal, but this update could throw a spanner in the works.

Guaranteed football

Gomez should surely be seeking out regular first-team football.

He played 36 times in all competitions last season, with 33 league starts. That could more than halve at Spurs.

Fernando Llorente, the back-up to Kane in 2018/19, made just six starts in the Premier League.

A move to Spurs will cut Gomez’s momentum from under him and it makes more sense for him to make a move to the Hammers.

Pellegrini, FFC understands, is keen to secure the striker as a potential starting forward, and game time simply cannot be guaranteed in the same vein in north London.

This, then, feels like a mistake on the forward’s part.

How Phil Jagielka could fit in at Sheffield United

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

12 years to the day since Phil Jagielka left Sheffield United he returned to Bramall Lane, becoming the Blades’ second signing of the summer.

While this signing may seem like a sentimental one, the former England international still has a lot to offer on the pitch.

While the 36-year-old played in just seven games last term, the Toffees kept clean sheets in five of them including against top four contenders Chelsea and Arsenal.

He even scored against Arsenal and was one of the best players on the pitch that day as the Gunners were limited to just two shots on target.

The former Everton man may be of value to Sheffield United, but how would he fit in at the club?

In Wilder’s current system

With Chris Wilder playing in such a unique way with his centre-backs, there’s really only one player Jagielka could replace in that backline.

Indeed, the 51-year-old encourages his outside centre-halves to attack, and the veteran legs of Jagielka probably don’t have the energy to do that anymore seeing as he only played the full 90 minutes three times last term.

Therefore, he would have to step into John Egan’s role as the sitting defender, and he could accomplish that competently as he has the defensive acumen to stop the best of attacks in the Premier League, as he showed by keeping Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at bay last season.

A new system

With the Blades’ promotion to the Premier League, they may have to experiment with new tactics, and Jagielka could fit into one of those.

Nothing captures the unpredictability of the Championship better than the video below…

Rather than playing a 5-2-1-2 with overlapping centre-halves, Wilder could adjust that into a 4-3-1-2 late in a game by subbing Jagielka on for Jack O’Connell and moving Chris Basham into the midfield where he has played before, namely against Leeds last season.

This would allow the Blades to have two much more rigid centre-backs in Egan and Jagielka with a strong defensive midfielder in front of them in Basham, and if they need to defend a lead late on this could be the way to do it.

Five Chelsea youngsters who need to be a part of Frank Lampard’s new-look Blues

[ad_pod ]

Frank Lampard has officially been appointed as the new manager of Chelsea.

Onlookers would be well within their rights to consider the probable appointment to be a risk given Lampard’s lack of managerial experience. That said, during his first season in management with Derby County, the 40-year-old demonstrated his willingness to entrust young players – a significant factor given the Blues’ current predicament.

Chelsea are banned from signing players for the next two transfer windows, and the need for serious youth integration has never been more pressing.

In Lampard, the Blues will have a manager who recognises the importance of trusting youth players – as his reliance on the likes of Harry Wilson, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori at Derby suggested – which could provide many of Chelsea’s young talents with their eagerly awaited breakthrough at Stamford Bridge.

Resultantly, here are five youngsters that must be incorporated into Chelsea’s squad under Lampard next season.

Mason Mount

Mount proved to be an integral figure in the Derby side that reached the Championship playoff final. His goal tally reached double figures in all competitions for the second successive season, contributing towards 17 goals – 11 goals and six assists – for the Rams.

Chelsea’s midfield requires an injection of creativity, particularly given that Ruben Loftus-Cheek is sidelined with a ruptured Achilles Tendon. Loftus-Cheek was the Blues’ highest scoring central midfielder in the league last season with six goals, and following the departure of Eden Hazard, Chelsea’s need for a variety of goal scorers is pressing.

Mount is an exceptional footballer who exhibits excellent technical quality and clinical proficiency in dead-ball situations. He has scored four direct free-kicks in his career.

His tremendous passing quality and habit of scoring from long-range would make him a valued member of Chelsea’s squad, and after two years away from the club acquiring regular first-team football, he deserves an opportunity to make a major step up in class.

Tammy Abraham

Not many teams are fortunate enough to have a 21-year-old with two international caps, top-flight experience and 60 senior club goals to their name. Given Chelsea’s need for a clinical striker, it would be foolish of the Blues not to utilise Tammy Abraham.

The forward was indispensable in Villa’s return to the Premier League, scoring 26 goals for Dean Smith’s side.

Collectively, Morata, Giroud and Higuain scored just 12 Premier League goals for Chelsea last season. Lampard’s need for a consistent goalscorer is clear, and Abraham could provide an answer.

The forward is supremely clinical in the penalty area, and he has also proven to be a dependent penalty taker – having scored 13 out of 16 penalties at all levels. His composure from the spot could be vital for Chelsea following the exit of Eden Hazard.

Ethan Ampadu

The Welshman enjoyed a frustrating season under Maurizio Sarri’s tutelage, one marred by limited involvement and injury concerns.

Despite his restricted opportunities at club level, Ampadu has shone on the international stage with Wales, becoming one of their most important players.

Rarely do you see an 18-year-old command proceedings as coolly and authoritatively as Ampadu. The Welshman displays splendid vision, and he has the technical quality to accompany his foresight.

He’s equally competent playing in defence or as a holding midfielder and displays an extensive passing range.

Ampadu plays without fear, and his physicality and tenacious nature ensure that he’s an imposing player.

The Guardian reported last month that Aston Villa are eager to sign him, and it’s unsurprising that other Premier League teams are courting his services.

His versatility and evident quality would be of enormous worth to Chelsea.

Reece James

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a phenomenal season with Wigan Athletic, where he won their player of the year, was named in the Championship team of the season and captained the side on the last day of the campaign.

James is supremely talented, and he can play in multiple positions, namely, right-back, centre-back and central midfield.

The Englishman flaunts a vast array of attacking qualities, notably his dribbling and crossing ability. He is also a potential threat from set-pieces. He managed to claim an assist from a free-kick during his time with the Latics and his presence would significantly augment Chelsea’s threat from wide positions.

Ousting a man of Cesar Azpilicueta’s pedigree will be a difficult task, but he has shown enough promise to earn a genuine opportunity in the senior setup.

Fikayo Tomori

Tomori’s impressive season with Derby County and close relationship with Frank Lampard could carve a pathway into Chelsea’s first-team next season.

Having played a staggering 55 appearances for the Rams under the soon-to-be Chelsea manager, one would expect Tomori to have a decent chance of featuring for the Blues in the forthcoming campaign.

The 21-year-old is another Chelsea youngster that provides tactical adaptability: he can play at centre-back or as a right-back.

Tomori’s impressive performances for Derby were rewarded with the player of the season award, and that alone is enough to suggest he can be a very capable player for Lampard to call upon next season.
