India lucky to have bowlers like Umesh, Aaron – McGrath

‘Being a fast bowler in India as hard as it gets’ – McGrath

Former Australia fast bowler Glenn McGrath has said that India are lucky to have quicks like Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron with the ability to bowl in the range of 150kph despite conditions that did not offer much support for fast bowlers.”To be a fast bowler in India is probably as tough as it gets. The wickets are not conducive to fast bowling,” McGrath said at an event hosted by ESPNcricinfo in association with Hardys, of which he is a brand ambassador. “The harder you bowl into the wicket, the slower it comes off sometimes. To be a quality fast bowler, you have to be able to adapt to different conditions around the world. To grow up in Australia, it’s fine. You get the pace, you get the bounce, it carries through nicely.”I think when the Indian team tours Australia, the fast bowlers must love the quicker wickets but here in India, it is tough. There’s no doubt about that. You’ve got to find different ways to take wickets and I think the MRF Pace Foundation was set up – Dennis Lillee with Ravi Mammen back about 28 years ago – to find that express Indian bowler. India are pretty lucky at the moment – in Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron, they’ve got two bowlers who bowl up around that 150kph mark, which is unusual. (Mohammed) Shami had a great World Cup and he can bowl quite well, too. So there are a few going around.”The Indian pace trio of Umesh, Aaron and Shami had also earned praise from former West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts, who said that Umesh was India’s first “genuine fast bowler”.McGrath said that his stint as director of the MRF Pace Foundation had helped him understand the technical aspects of fast bowling better, making it easier for him to train young quicks at the foundation. McGrath, who took over as director of the foundation from Dennis Lillee in 2012, said he had initially been hesitant about the role, but had taken it up as an opportunity to give something back to the game. He said the lessons he had learnt on the job would have helped him in his international career.”When Dennis asked me, my first thought was, ‘No I don’t want to coach’, because when I retired, I said I never wanted to coach, I never wanted to commentate. I am now doing both of those and enjoying both of those. The more I thought about it, I had been out of the game for five-six years and I thought it was now time to give something back. I went over and did a bit of work with Dennis, watched the way he went about it. My involvement with the foundation over the last two-and-a-half years is something that I have really enjoyed but I have also learnt myself.”What I learnt about fast bowling and the technical side of things, I wish I knew when I was playing. I could have fixed my action up a bit, probably been a little better. So now I feel I can teach a young person how to bowl, how to fix someone’s action if things aren’t going right. I feel very lucky that I am still learning. You can never know enough. You should always look to improve yourself and I have definitely done that. Hopefully, a bit of my experience, the mental side of the game, the routines, the game plans, the thinking, the thought-processes I can pass that on to the next generation of players coming through.”

Sorry Middlesex thrashed by Surrey

Chases do not come easier than the 106 Middlesex asked Surrey to knock off and the hosts did not have to break sweat in ensuring success

Many very real battles took place at the Kia Oval on Friday night. Spectators battled end-of-week queues on tubes and roads to make it into the ground, then further queues to make it to the equally congested bars. Stewards battled those spectators as they grew restless and unruly, sculpting their beer snakes and shouting their chants. The crowd – barely a spare seat was visible – can claim emphatic victories in both. That they then stuck around in their thousands at play’s end to watch and cheer some of their number sprint across the outfield – battling, as ever, those unfortunate, officious stewards – suggested that they felt somewhat shortchanged by the action in the middle.Out in the middle, either side of the “mascot derby” – adults dressed as furry animals from sports club across London and perhaps the closest the crowd came to seeing actual sport – came the cricket. Chases do not come easier than the 106 Middlesex asked Surrey to knock off and the hosts were not about to break sweat in ensuring success. Middlesex were abject, for the second time in as many days, and have a seventh consecutive defeat in the format to show for it.Insights

Zafar Ansari produced the sort of intelligent containing bowling performance that explains quite why he is so highly regarded in South London and beyond. Brought into the attack with Gubbins and Malan set and just after Batty’s first over had cost 12, Ansari dried things up and picked up three crucial wickets too. He varied his flight and pace and bowled just short of a hittable length that meant his 24 deliveries yielded 17 singles and seven dots, including those three scalps.

The similarities with their defeat to Sussex across town on Thursday were striking. Once again they batted first, lost wickets frequently, failed to clear the rope enough – seven times to Thursday’s nine – and posted a target wildly under par. They did not score a boundary in the final 80 deliveries of their 120, and no batsman outside of their top three managed it. Sussex beat them with 28 balls to spare, Surrey 32.Surrey must take some credit. They fielded like hawks and bowled parsimoniously, giving Middlesex no rope. The sight of Kumar Sangakkara, 38 this year and a wicketkeeper by trade, haring round from long-off, diving full stretch and flicking the ball up to James Burke in order to save two runs off the bowling of Sam Curran just about epitomised Surrey’s effort.Middlesex’s start did not tell of the inadequacy to come. The runs didn’t flow, but wickets didn’t tumble. Paul Stirling skied Sam Curran to Zafar Ansari at cover before Dawid Malan, who pulled with disdain, shared 40 with the organised Nick Gubbins, who pulled then cut Burke for boundaries. The pair ran sharply as Malan looked to dominate but never quite could, carting Gareth Batty for a cow-bound six in his first over nevertheless. But when Ansari joined Batty in the attack the runs dried up and the rot set in. Gubbins skied the first ball of Batty’s second when trying to follow Malan to the short cow fence, taking on a strong breeze that held it up and saw him caught. Even then, a handy enough platform had been laid at 55 for 2.Eoin Morgan scratched and couldn’t settle before being bowled by Ansari as Middlesex contrived to lose six wickets for 13 runs and end all hopes of a contest. Simpson was bowled by Batty, Malan – who had acted as the innings’ glue – sent Ansari straight to long-on and Neil Dexter attempted to turn a sharp turner to leg next ball and was bowled. Ansari was outstanding, varying his lengths trickily to make each delivery tough to hit.Young bowlers – men who should not be required to bat in a game this short – Harry Podmore and Ravi Patel saw the line and were determined to limp over it, taking Middlesex to the last over with a series of singles and the occasional two before the latter was castled by Tom Curran. It had been a sorry showing indeed. In reply, Jason Roy did as Jason Roy does, but Surrey were in no hurry. He flashed through off and attempted a switch hit, while his pinch-hitting partner Tom Curran – perhaps a permanent fixture up top in this format now – sent Gurjit Sandhu over long-off for six. He then moved to 16 with a French cut off Podmore, who gained his revenge by bowling him four balls later. Roy would follow, also bowled, attempting an audacious ramp.Wise old heads Sangakkara and Gary Wilson new they needn’t rush. Sangakkara strolled to 12 off 17 before hunting Patel. There was a sweep for four, a bunt over long-on for six and a pulled four. Stirling and Malan were given a bowl as the action wound down and the crowd ramped up, both were dispatched by Sangakkara and the game was up. Middlesex can forget this competition once more but Surrey – up to sixth now – might just be on the charge.

CSK, RR owners suspended for two years

The RM Lodha panel has suspended the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals franchises for a period of two years

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jul-20152:54

What options do Super Kings and Royals have?

In an order with far-reaching implications, the RM Lodha committee has suspended India Cements and Jaipur IPL, the owners of the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals teams, for a period of two years. The committee has also banned for life Gurunath Meiyappan, a former team official of Super Kings, and Raj Kundra, a former Royals co-owner, from any involvement in cricket matches. The committee’s order effectively leaves the two companies with teams that cannot play. Super Kings have twice won the IPL, and are perennial tournament favourites, while Royals won the inaugural edition. The onus is now on the BCCI and the two companies to work out the way forward, to decide whether the teams will be in a two-year limbo or play under different ownership. The news sent officials of the two franchises, and also of the BCCI, which owns the IPL, into a series of meetings as they began to make sense of the judgement. The IPL governing council is likely to meet over the weekend, and the BCCI’s working committee might meet before that. In a brief statement Jagmohan Dalmiya, the BCCI president, said it was “committed to honour and respect judicial decisions and it would give its observations after the entire report is read and a collective decision is taken.”Among the franchises, the initial sense was that both would appeal against the decision, though the sheer composition of this committee – Lodha is a former Chief Justice of India and Ashok Bhan and RV Raveendran are retired judges of the Supreme Court – suggests any court would be wary of overturning the decision. The committee, which made its report public in a 45-minute session in New Delhi, said its ruling was based on disciplinary grounds, on behalf of the BCCI. It refused to accept the argument that the acts of Gurunath and Kundra were personal, and that the franchises could thus not be held responsible.”Disrepute has been brought to cricket, the BCCI and the IPL to such an extent that there are doubts abound in the public whether the game is clean or not,” Lodha, a former Chief Justice of India, said.”Jaipur IPL claims it is highly celebrated as a nursery of players. But three of its players have accused of alleged spot-fixing. This shows that all is not well in their handling of affairs. The position of Raj Kundra with the Rajasthan Royals franchise – part owner and team official – means his actions brought the game, BCCI and IPL into disrepute.”Kundra responded on Twitter by saying, “Many inaccuracies…Have requested for a copy of the judgement. Obviously very shocked and disappointed…”Gurunath Meiyappan has been suspended for life from any involvement in cricket matches•Hindustan Times

The panel came down hard on Gurunath, who they felt had caused “huge injury” to the image of the game, and said that India Cements had not shown to have taken any action against him.”Any agony suffered by him because of media coverage or any hardship that may have been caused to him is too small in comparison to the huge injury he caused to the reputation and image of the game, the IPL and the BCCI. If the reputation and image of the sport are lost, what remains? Being 40 years of age, he is not young but middle-aged. It is difficult to accept that he has passion for the game.”Not only that no urgent action was taken by India Cements against Gurunath Meiyappan but as a matter of fact no action has been shown to have been taken against him. The order of suspension passed by the BCCI against GM after his arrest is not an action by India Cements against its official.”Former High Court Judge Mukul Mudgal, who was part of the three-member probe panel which conducted an independent investigation into the corruption allegations, called the verdict a “temporary setback” for the IPL, but one that was taken for the “greater good” of cricket.”I’m sorry, but if the franchise is banned, how can the team escape? So this has to happen,” Mudgal told the news channel. “It’s a consequence of some wrongdoing and it also sends a message all across, right to the top, don’t indulge in any wrong doing.”Please remember however great it may be, however popular it may be, it’s about the game of cricket. And therefore in the long run it will benefit the IPL. There is a current feeling that all matches in the IPL are fixed, which is a totally wrong feeling. I can only think that this step will restore people’s confidence in the game of cricket and in the IPL.”

Queensland made an ordinary start to their bid for a Sheffield Shield final place by being bowled out cheaply by Western Australia on day one at the Gabba. The Bulls are currently second behind Victoria on a tightly packed competition table, and may have allowed their destiny to slip out of their hands in being dismissed for 147 after being sent in by the Warriors.Michael Hogan claimed four wickets for WA in his final match for the state, and was well supported by the teenager Jhye Richardson, who picked up three of his own. Hogan’s return was typical of his career, probing around off stump and finding the outside edge of the bat with subtle movement.Having placed themselves under pressure through an indifferent batting display, the Bulls were given early hope with the ball when Cameron Bancroft and Marcus Harris fell to Jack Wildermuth. However, the international pair of Shaun Marsh and Adam Voges steadied the Warriors, and will hope for more runs on the second morning.

Rohit eager to open for rest of IPL

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma has said he is likely to open for the remainder of the IPL season, ahead of their match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday

Nagraj Gollapudi in Kolkata12-Apr-20161:00

‘We can’t take any baggage with us as a team’ – Rohit

Just over a month ago, Rohit Sharma had scored an unbeaten 98 at Eden Gardens. It was in India’s first warm-up match of the World Twenty20, against West Indies. Incidentally, Rohit had made the same score at the same ground in last year’s IPL opener against Kolkata Knight Riders, who Mumbai Indians will face on Wednesday evening. Although Rohit had succeeded that day last year, Mumbai had failed. Eventually, they won the IPL with three Mumbai batsmen featuring among the top-10 run-scorers – Lendl Simmons, Rohit and Kieron Pollard. This IPL season is Pollard’s first competitive tournament since his knee surgery last year. In the tournament opener in Mumbai on April 9, Pollard struggled against Rising Pune Supergiants, labouring for eight balls to make just one run.Simmons, one of the heroes in West Indies’ triumph over India in the World T20 semi-finals, is now likely to be rested for the next few matches. He had originally dropped out of the West Indies squad due to a bad back, only to be flown in as a late replacement for the knockout matches.Ambati Rayudu, Hardik Pandya and England batsman Jos Buttler, playing his maiden IPL, form the Mumbai middle order, but it is difficult to imagine and expect them to play the lead batsman’s role in case the top order fails as it did against Supergiants. That leaves the onus on Rohit, the team’s best batsman and captain. T20 history is abundant with examples in which a good beginning often ensures a team defends a big or huge total. Rohit has been opening regularly for India in limited-overs matches since 2013. However, with Mumbai Indians he has not done the same. Last IPL, he opened only twice. This season, though, he has decided to open with a longer stint in mind.”It’s important to get the balance and the position of each player right, where they have batted for their country/state, it’s important to keep that going,” Rohit said on Tuesday. “For me, I’ve been opening for a while – three years now – so I’d like to continue that for the remainder of the series. But everything depends on the balance, if I feel me batting top of order is not right for the team, I’ll come down as a middle-order batsman. If it helps the team, I’m ready to do whatever it takes to help the team win.”According to Rohit, the Mumbai batting has depth, including batsmen who are proven matchwinners in international cricket. “We have to share the responsibility. I cannot be just one person winning the tournament,” Rohit said. “Last year, we hardly had anyone in the top five in the batting list which shows that everybody contributed and shared the responsibility. You will have individual performances and brilliance at times, but if you want to win the tournament, it has to come from everyone not just one person. In the last three years, we have had so much success because the responsibility was shared. I would expect the same, but as a leader, I would like to step up and perform every game.”Building momentum in the first half, especially in the first few matches, is what Mumbai coach Ricky Ponting has always said is the key to succeed in tournaments like IPL. Last year, Mumbai had a horrid first half. In order to not repeat the mistakes, Rohit and co. will have to play their roles convincingly.Mumbai have two IPL editions in the last three seasons – 2013 and 2015. And which Mumbai batsman was among the top-10 run-scorers in those two seasons? Rohit would once again like to lead from the front, although in a different role.
