RCB lose after having game in the bag

Royal Challengers were in control of the game nearly all the way through, till a stunning Chris Lynn catch turned the match in the final over

Agarkar: RCB lost it, more than KKR winning

How quickly does a Twenty20 game change? Ask Royal Challengers Bangalore. For virtually the entire duration, the match was in their grasp: their bowlers had combined to limit Kolkata Knight Riders to 150 on a flat track in Sharjah, their openers had put them on course in the chase, and even though Yuvraj Singh flapped about towards the end, the asking-rate was never out of hand. Even at the start of the final over with two renowned finishers, AB de Villiers and Albie Morkel, in the middle, Royal Challengers were favourites.Nine runs were needed, and Knight Riders’ two major threats, Sunil Narine and Morne Morkel, had bowled out. Vinay Kumar stepped up to the job and delivered an over filled with full deliveries that kept his old team down to six, sparking delirious celebrations from the Knight Riders camp. When a bowler defends nine off the final over in a Twenty20, that too against some of the finest hitters in the world, you’d expect him to hog the headlines. However, it is Chris Lynn who everyone will be talking about after he took a preposterous, acrobatic catch to send back de Villiers and turn the game in the final over.De Villiers was looking to clear the long boundary at midwicket – the pitch was at the edge of the square – and though he connected well, there wasn’t enough to clear the rope. He might still have survived, as Lynn had slipped and fallen before the ball got to him. That didn’t deter Lynn, who leapt up and plucked that powerful hit bending his back like a high-jumper, and flopped to the ground, somehow managing it all without touching the rope which was a yard behind.Given the sheer athleticism involved, the stage of the game, and the player who was dismissed by it, it’s hard to see how Lynn’s catch will be topped this season. “I slipped and I thought if I stood up and dropped the catch, it would look very silly, so just stayed down,” was Lynn’s straight-faced explanation when asked about his game-changing grab. After de Villiers’ exit Royal Challengers needed six off two, not entirely out of reach, especially for a hitter like Morkel. But the catch left Royal Challengers stunned, and even though the final delivery was a hittable full toss, Morkel couldn’t put it away, and Knight Riders’ jailbreak was complete. The high drama at the end masked a diffident performance from Knight Riders for much of the game. The only other passage in the match when they looked in control was when Lynn was in the middle, swatting sixes off the returning Muttiah Muralitharan. Lynn, bought as an afterthought in the IPL auctions, showed some of the big-hitting that has earned him loyal fans in the Big Bash League.Lynn put on 80 for the third wicket with Jacques Kallis, after Gautam Gambhir fell for his third successive duck and the in-form Manish Pandey faltered. Lynn’s dismissal in the 12th over drained the momentum from Knight Riders’ innings and they finished on what seemed an inadequate score. Varun Aaron showed he had control as well as pace, and legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal turned in his third impressive performance in a row to keep the Knight Riders in check.Royal Challengers’ dominance increased after their openers, Parthiv Patel and Yogesh Takawale, provided a strong start, and Virat Kohli was at his usual best to guide the chase along. Narine was watchfully played out till Kohli was bamboozled off the penultimate ball of his spell to give Knight Riders a faint chance. Yuvraj couldn’t force the pace towards the end, reviving memories of his painful World Twenty20 final innings and giving Knight Riders more of a grip on the game, before Vinay and Lynn yanked it out of Royal Challengers’ hands.

Middlesex seek to build Lord's fortress

If you want to be a contender for the Championship title then becoming unbeatable at home is a good place to start. Middlesex will hoipe to underline that against Lancashire on the final day

If you want to be a contender for the Championship title then becoming unbeatable at home is a good place to start. Middlesex have begun the season in such a vein and have a good chance to make it three wins from three at Lord’s with an excellent forecast for the final day. Then they will just need to figure out how to not implode on the road.Their advance on the third day was frustrated by heavy showers, but they made good use of what was available to them by scoring 184 runs in 55 overs before declaring with a lead of 193. They had hoped for a decent-length session at Lancashire’s top order, but rain trimmed it to a 10-over burst as the ground was bathed in even sunshine. It was enough time, however, for them to remove Luis Reece, the left hander who has struggled this season, when he was caught on the back foot against Tim Murtagh. Steven Finn was promoted to the new-ball in this innings and looked in better rhythm during his five-over spell which included an edge off Paul Horton which may have carried low to third slip but which was not held.Quite how many players Middlesex provide for England this summer is still up in the air, but Eoin Morgan, key to the limited-overs set-up, reached a significant milestone, with his first Championship hundred since 2009 – although since then he has only played 20 matches – before becoming the second batsman caught down the leg side in the innings. It was a definite nudge to the England selectors if not quite a forceful push. His technique (barring the occasional flirt outside off) did appear tighter than has previously been the case.Lancashire’s bowling during a truncated morning session was probing, as it was with the first new ball before they faded yesterday. Glen Chapple had a touch more zip about him and Hogg continued his excellent return to the Championship line-up.They deserved the rewards which came their way after lunch. Hogg removed Neil Dexter, who was bowled trying to pull to end a stand of 126, and had Joe Denly caught behind as he pushed forward. That made it four single-figure scores for Denly this season.Middlesex were threatening to fall away with a lead of under a hundred, but a robust partnership of 124 in 33 overs between John Simpson and Ollie Rayner soon reasserted their authority. Rayner is one the spinners-who-bat to attract attention from the England selectors and he was on the Lions tour to Sri Lanka earlier this season, but he remains some way down the pecking order for further elevation. He has just two wickets so far this season – albeit in conditions that have not favoured his art form – but lower-order runs is that vital second string until a spinner becomes more of a matchwinner later in the summer.Still, while Middlesex will expect their seamers to do most of the work to bowl Lancashire out a second time, if the forecast is as warm and sunny as it promises to be he could yet have more work on the final day.

Ansari and Batty spin Surrey to win

Zafar Ansari and Gareth Batty spun Surrey to a convincing 10-wicket victory against Leicestershire at The Oval, but not before Charlie Shreck had played the innings of his life.It was not long after Shreck had tottered to the middle at No 11 – with his side on the brink of another feeble spanking – that an official was ordered to lower the Leicestershire flag on top of the pavilion.Batty, Surrey’s veteran offspinner and the young slow left-armer Ansari, who led the way with 5 for 93, had shared the spoils as Leicestershire’s middle order offered little resistance on the final morning, collapsing from 213 for 5 to 225 for 9.But Shreck hit his maiden first-class half-century, at the age of 36, in an improbable last-wicket stand of 94 with Jigar Naik to leave Surrey requiring 69. Ansari and Rory Burns chased down the victory target of 69 with an element of disdain and minimal ado.Ansari’s stock is rising with every passing week and after scoring his maiden first-class century at Derby last week, he followed that up with his first five-wicket haul here to leave Leicestershire floundering. The prospect of them salvaging something from this game may have seemed improbable but was not unmanageable.Conditions, even on the fourth day, facilitated heavy run-scoring once batsmen had attuned themselves. The top-order all managed to pass twenty but Angus Robson apart, none could reign themselves in for the long haul. Until Shreck’s grandest hour, that is.Ned Eckersley, who had played with such composure on Tuesday evening, fell across a straight one from Matthew Dunn in the first over of the day and that set the tone for what was to follow. Such was the extent of their batting disintegration, Surrey were afforded the extra half hour before lunch to take the one wicket they required. But Shreck, unlike many of his team mates, has no inhibitions when he straps the pads on. An innings consisting of seven boundaries highlighted that as he and Naik, who played second fiddle but looked equally assured on his way to an unbeaten 37, curbed Surrey’s victory charge – temporarily at least.”I really enjoyed it,” Shreck said afterwards. “I was actually quite nervous over lunch which is strange because it’s normally over fear of getting hurt with bat rather than needing to score runs.”It was a lovely wicket to bat on but their spinners bowled nicely today. There was a bit of rough but we didn’t do ourselves any favours. There is a lot more ability in that dressing room than we’re actually showing which is disappointing.”We have a lot of learning to do especially when we have the opposition of that calibre seven down for not much in the first innings. We ran out of steam and we have to give them credit but we just didn’t bat properly first time and then we collapsed again today.”Leicestershire lost seven wickets in a morning session. Moreover, the manner in which the wickets fell typified a side devoid of all confidence as the procession had an element of inevitably about it. One member of the crowd even resorted to applauding each Leicestershire run as he looked to get value for his entry fee.”We’ve had a tough month,” Shreck continued. “There has been a lot of cricket that hasn’t gone our way and games in which we’ve been in a good position at the halfway point have been let slip. It’s not a fitness issue but just a knowledge thing. We need to keep going because the third day often decides the outcome of a game and it did here.”Surrey must take much of the credit though. Batty and Ansari bowled with patience as they induced the type of shots that hinted at a side completely out of their depth. Nathan Buck was lbw attempting an expansive sweep when the situation called for no-nonsense defence while Josh Cobb, the Leicestershire captain, managed to get bowled around his legs trying to work the ball for a single. The hosts could have been forgiven for contemplating what they would do with their afternoon off but found patience and composure when Shreck and Naik weathered the storm and overturned the deficit.”We are very proud of the guys because it was tough out there,” Graham Ford, Surrey’s head coach, said. “We were made to work hard and the group have come together quite nicely over the past few weeks, sticking together and supporting one another.”We’re building up some momentum now and hopefully we’re going in the right direction but it doesn’t always go to plan but we’ve got a good mix of guys and we just want to build on each performance from now until the end of the season.”A second successive ten-wicket triumph edged Surrey closer to the top two but for Leicestershire, things are not as rosy.

Trescothick sets new Taunton mark

Marcus Trescothick’s 54th first-class hundred took him past Lionel Palairet’s 100-year-old record for the most runs scored at Taunton by one batsman

Marcus Trescothick has scored more first-class runs at Taunton’s County Ground than any other batsman. That’s one fact. Another is that the vast majority of them will have been made on pitches a lot less stodgy than this slow, bare and dry surface, which has tested the patience and staying power of players and spectators alike. It has been tough going so far – and one can only assume it will get tougher still for most of those out in the middle. But while a bit more pace in the pitch would be welcome, watchers who like slow burners and not too much biff, bash, bosh have been in their element. Above all, this contest between the title-dreaming hosts and the relegation-haunted visitors could bubble up into a brilliant finish come the final afternoon – and make the terrific centuries of either Trescothick or Paul Horton look even more valuable than they do now.Where Lancashire opener Horton trod in making 140 out of a total of 266, Somerset opposite number Trescothick was desperate to follow. In fact, so determined was the former England batsman not to make a mistake during the searching new-ball spells of Glen Chapple and Kyle Hogg that he needed 31 deliveries to get off the mark, and 38 to reach 3.Three? That not usually significant score took Trescothick’s total first-class runs on this ground to 7,229 – one more than the previous record-holder Lionel Palairet, who served Somerset splendidly well between 1890 and 1909.No doubt Palairet was popular, but few have been more popular in these parts than Trescothick. His loyal fan club suffered with him last season when he could not even sniff a century and now those members who insisted normal service would resume in 2014 have been proved right.Hundreds against Sussex (at Hove) and Durham (Taunton) contributed to victories. This innings might have a similar impact – and, if it does, Lancashire will look back with regret on the moment Trescothick edged Wayne White hard and fast towards second slip where a seemingly startled Ashwell Prince could only help a shoulder high ball on its way to the rope.Trescothick had made 25 at the time and, despite having already hoisted left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan for a six, was by no means finding life straightforward. He soon added three authentic fours, though, and almost instantly looked if not at ease then at least in control of the situation. With Kerrigan turning the ball quite a long way at times, there was no question of batting with real freedom. Indeed, the slow bowler was convinced he had taken a return catch to remove Trescothick on 50 (umpire Rob Bailey ruling that no bat was involved) while Somerset’s captain almost ran himself out going for the single which completed his half-century. Always built more for comfort than speed, Trescothick, at 38, really shouldn’t try anything quite so risky and was fortunate here that former team-mate Jos Buttler missed the target with his throw from short cover.By then, however, Trescothick had found just the partner he needed in Alviro Petersen. Both Chris Jones and Nick Compton failed to kick on after digging in but the hosts’ third wicket pair prospered in the warmest sunshine of the day. Most eyes, understandably, were on Trescothick, who completed the 54th first-class century of his career with a scampered two. Despite the slow start, this one still came from a perfectly acceptable 219 deliveries and included 15 fours as well as that early six.Petersen, though, deserved plenty of praise, too. He did have a moment of luck, on 37, when slightly top-edging a pull against offspinner Steven Croft to deep midwicket where Kerrigan, perilously close to the rope, could only push the ball, above his head, for six. But the South African played with reassuring certainty for most of his knock and contributed fully to a priceless, and as yet unbroken, stand of 144.”They dovetailed nicely because we were almost getting ourselves into a corner,” Somerset’s director of cricket, Dave Nosworthy, said. “Now we are in a decent position but not yet a controlling position.”And what of Trescothick’s innings? “It was right up there in terms of quality and he’s a pleased man tonight,” Nosworthy added. “Being able to cope with the pressure and conditions like those is what sets players like Tres apart.”

L! Espresso: O Flamengo mandou avisar…
