Is this Man United striker really overrated?

A lot of bad press is given to Wayne Rooney, sometimes unfairly and the player has a lot of people saying he is over rated and does not deserve to be England captain.

The player had shown a lot of early promise in his career after making a big impact for his boyhood team Everton as a sixteen year old. He was playing some outstanding football from the word go and scored a lot of important goals for the Merseyside club, including a whopper of a goal against Arsenal for which I think he went down in history for. After only two season at Everton, scoring fifteen goals in sixty seven appearances, he was signed by Manchester United for a £25.6million transfer fee.

He had a promising start to his career at Manchester United and justified the move becoming United’s top scorer that season with eleven goals. He started to get a bit of a reputation for the wrong reasons however, with his bad temper and poor discipline becoming a regular feature in the newspapers and a and attitude was clearly visible at times like when he was needlessly sent off in September 2005 against Villareal in a game which ended goalless, when he was booked he sarcastically applauded the referee and bagged himself a second yellow. It seemed the youngster, for all the talent and promise he had, it was over shadowed by his silly behaviour and bad attitude, coming across as a bit of a wild child who was in serious need of piping down and being tamed by the mighty Sir Alex Ferguson.

His international career followed suit in similar fashion, with some promising goals and good play from the forward being marred by a shoddy disciplinary record and more bad press in the papers.

The most famous scandal was of course about his apparent taste for ;mature’ women with a story breaking that he had sexual relations with an elderly prostitute. He sadly became a bit of a laughing stock and people started to lose patience with the player who would continue to get himself in trouble on and off the pitch. What followed  was a goalless period in the 2006/2007 season where he went ten games without scoring, until hitting the back of the net three times against Bolton to earn himself a two year contract extension.

For me, I think that a combination of bad press (some of it justified) and his previously poor attitude has earned the new England captain a bad name, more attention is focused on him as a person than as a player. But not only that, he has failed to perform for his country in recent years as a goal scorer and he hasn’t really been that great for his club either. But I think that he is most definitely NOT over rated. The guy has a bag full of talent; that much was obvious from the word go when he was at Everton and scoring top drawer goals, providing vital assists for his team mates, and he has continued to play like that throughout his career with some truly memorable goals being bagged in the process.

The general consensus is that Rooney is used in the wrong way as a player. He is consistently played in the number ten role behind a striker, and at times by Fergie he would be used on the wing. Both England and United are missing out on the best of Wayne because he isn’t used in the way he should be used, which is as natural number nine. He played in that role for Everton and he would hassle and bully defenders, win headers and get himself on the scoresheet regularly.

He is one of the best strikers in the game in that role and I would go as far as comparing him to Alan Shearer, who played that role superbly throughout his entire career as a player. Rooney is not utilised in that way these days and, despite glimpses of his genius, we do not see him living up to his full potential . As a result, he is classed as over rated by many and continues to get a lot of stick by fans and pundits alike.

Rooney will lead England out tonight against Switzerland in the Euro 2016 qualifier. Let’s hope Hodgson has read this and plays him as a number nine tonight.

Arsenal boss believes injury struck squad to blame for Southampton defeat

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger remained firm on his decision to field an inexperience defence, but revealed that his injury struck back-line finally took its toll on the squad following his side’s 2-1 lost against Southampton in the Capital One Cup, Skysports.

The loss saw the Gunners get knocked out of the domestic competition for the first time in 12 years as an on-form Saints squad registered there first ever win at the Emirates.

Wenger refrained from blaming his defenders as he believes his opponents were the better side and deserved their win.

“It’s disappointing because we had a good start and we made two unneeded errors on the two goals – and big ones,” he said.

“We lacked a bit of experience at the back, but overall they did well. We gave a lot and it’s frustrating not to be able to score in the second half.

“When you look at the amount of possession we had, we have to give credit to Southampton, they played well and were well organised.

“They abused a bit the fouls in the middle of the park, but they are a good side and they played well tonight. Overall it is frustrating because we gave a lot.”

The French boss decided to field Hector Bellerin, Calum Chambers, Issac Hayden, and Francis Coquelin in the back four, in order to allow his first-team players to get back to full fitness.

“We are a bit short, yes, because of the injuries we have,” Wenger added.

“You sit there and think: (Kieran) Gibbs had a little hamstring problem and we could not play him, (Per) Mertesacker is a bit on the edge, and then we have no choice.

Arsenal hero: Sign this German ace & win we’ll win the league

If Arsenal sign Sami Khedira from Real Madrid in January they can win the Premier League title, according to former Gunners star Perry Groves.

The Gunners are rumoured to be one of a host of clubs – including Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City – chasing the 27-year-old midfielder.

Khedira helped Germany to World Cup glory earlier this year, but he is believed to be available for just £10m this January with his contract at Real due to expire when the season ends.

Arsenal are rumoured to be a club the rangy ace would be willing to join, with various reports suggesting that he’s open to a deal in the New Year to link up with Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski at the Emirates Stadium.

And Groves believes that if Arsene Wenger makes the move, his old side could go on to become champion of England:

“They need to strengthen that defensive midfield area and the one that stands out in my mind is Khedira,” he told the London Evening Standard. “He would be perfect for them.

“Khedira knows that role. He has the physicality and a great passing range. His attitude is good with a great winning mentality and it wouldn’t take him too long to settle because he would have his three German team-mates with him [Ozil, Mertesacker and Podolski].

“He would give Arsenal something different. A lot of their midfield players are very similar, very technically gifted players but Khedira will win the ball back to allow others to go and play. He’s proved he can handle life at a massive club and he could fit straight in.

“If they can get to within six or seven points by the time the January transfer window opens and then sign Khedira, they could win it.”

West Ham to beat Arsenal and Spurs to highly-rated defender

West Ham could beat London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham to the signature of Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, according to Hammers legend Frank McAvennie.

The Dutch defender has been heavily linked with a move away from Celtic Park in recent months, with north London clubs Arsenal and Spurs reported to be the front runners to sign him.

But McAvennie believes van Dijk would be better off signing for West Ham, who are enjoying a sparkling start to the season and currently occupy a top four spot in the Premier League.

He told London24: “I’m sure the manager will already have told him he’s going nowhere in January.

“I know there’s been talk of Arsenal but at this stage I think that’s ambitious.

“But, he can still get a really big club – and if he does well against Inter Milan then who knows. I can tell you for a fact, the English clubs don’t care how well players do against other Scottish teams.

“To get a move like that, you’ve got to do well in Europe. That’s where you are judged. It’s one thing doing well in Scotland but it’s Europe where the English clubs will judge you.

“Everyone is talking up the prospect of him maybe going to one of the big four in England – I don’t think he’s going to get to that level at this stage. Maybe a West Ham is more realistic.

“My advice would be to stay because he’s learning all the time. He’s certainly a very good player but if he’s got ambitions of going straight to a top four or six team in England then another season would do him no harm at all.”

With Winston Reid’s Upton Park future in the balance, the Hammers are in the market for a central defender in January and are expected to enquire about the possibility of bringing the 23-year-old Celtic defender to east London next month.

Just how vital is this superstar to Tottenham’s cause?

Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Christian Eriksen is in the form of his life at present. Not only has the midfield maestro netted four goals in his last five outings, he is quickly becoming Spurs’ most vital player as they push for a top four spot in the Premier League.

Eriksen has been in outstanding form of late with his two goals in the second-leg of the League Cup semi-final earning Tottenham their first Wembley final appearance since 2009. The Dane’s league form has been very impressive too, as he has played a huge part in Tottenham’s recent turn around in fortunes that has seen them rise up to sixth in the table and just two points off a Champions League place.

Eriksen’s rich vein of scoring form isn’t the only thing that has caught the eye recently either. The Spurs ace has taken the bull by the horns in the Tottenham midfield, and his 89% pass-accuracy on Saturday speaks volumes of his current form. Eriksen has hit 11 goals in all competitions so far this season, and if the 22-year-old continues to find the net on such a regular basis, it will be very interesting to see how many goals he can go onto get this season.

When the Danish international arrived at White Hart Lane from Ajax in August 2013, not many people could have envisioned just how great an impact Eriksen would make in the Premier League. This season though, the midfielder has upped his game to the next level, and along with the excellent Harry Kane, the the Dane has been Spurs’ standout player so far.

[ad_pod id=’football-friends’ align=’center’]

It’s hard to believe that Eriksen is still only 22 – he plays well beyond his tender years – and when the playmaker doesn’t perform as well as his high standards allow him to, Tottenham noticeably suffer as a consequence . Few 22-year-old’s have that sort of effect on their team. Since the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane, the Spurs boss has seemed to have nurtured and developed Eriksen into an even better player.

Eriksen’s excellent performance at Bramall Lane last week has set up a League Cup final against Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea later this month. The last time Spurs won a major trophy was the League Cup in 2008. With Tottenham hitting the right sort of form at just the right time – including beating Chelsea 5-3 last month – the Lilywhites will fancy their chances of upsetting their London rivals at Wembley on March 1st.

Despite being disappointingly knocked out of the FA Cup at home to Leicester City, Spurs have qualified comfortably for the knockout stages of the Europa League. They face Fiorentina over two legs within a month, as Spurs gear up for an influx of fixtures that will shape their season.

After a tough start to life in north London for Pochettino, he’s really stamped his authority on the club and things are really starting to click into place for the ex-Southampton boss. The Argentine is starting to get the best out of his players; the incredible emergence of young Harry Kane coupled with Christian Eriksen’s stunning form. With a cup final to look forward to, as well as the ongoing Premier League and European exploits to get their teeth into; the future is certainly starting to look bright again for Tottenham Hotspur.

Would this Liverpool star have succeeded for Man United?

He’s been making moves in Merseyside, but Liverpool’s Emre Can has recently revealed that he could have been playing for his side’s fiercest rivals. Apparently, before David Moyes was relieved of his Manchester United managerial duties, a deal was in place to bring Can to Old Trafford.

The deal then fell through upon Moyes’ sacking in April, but had he been able to sign Can, would this have changed things for the Scot?

Emre Can is not the only player David Moyes had failed to bring to his new club. Before his first and only season in charge of Manchester United, Moyes was also supposed to secure the signing of Ander Herrera. But this massive blunder should have been an indication of things to come. In the end, Moyes could only secure the signing of Marouane Fellaini.

One of Can’s greater attributes is his versatility on the field. He can be utilised as a midfielder, but has also dropped back into the defensive line for Liverpool. Can has become a constant at the back for his new side, but had he been signed by Moyes, he surely would have been kept in midfield. This is due to the fact Moyes inherited a defence that still included Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra.

Can’s recent confession highlights yet another failing of Moyes’s tenure at Manchester United; another player that he ‘almost’ signed. When players would have once flocked to play under Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes simply just did not have the same appeal.

[ad_pod id=’football-friends’ align=’center’]

Although Moyes could not land Can, he did sign a slightly older, but incredibly talented, Juan Mata. At Manchester United at the moment, Daley Blind is essentially doing what Emre Can has had to do at Liverpool. He was initially played in midfield, but in the past two games, Blind has himself dropped back to left back.

Whether David Moyes had signed Emre Can or not, this transfer alone would never have been enough to salvage his career in Manchester. His days were numbered before he had ever really began. It was not the right appointment for him, and he is far better off at Real Sociedad.

Emre Can himself was also better off signing for Liverpool on the basis of how things ended for Manchester United last season. Fellaini was branded a flop and a waste of money under Moyes, and Can would have likely suffered a similar fate.

As the season progressed, it was blindly obvious that Moyes’s side just did not want to know any more. Can is now proving himself to be a useful member of Liverpool’s team at only 21-years-old, and will continue to improve.

City fans can’t understand Pellegrini’s surprising starting XI choice

Manchester City returned to their clinical self against Newcastle United on Saturday, with the Citizens finding themselves five goals to the good before the hour-mark.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side’s impressive showing against the Magpies was helped greatly by the performance of Edin Dzeko, who bagged a decent brace whilst outshining his strike partner Sergio Aguero in the process.

[ad_pod id=’football-friends’ align=’center’]

Despite the forward’s showing at the weekend, it doesn’t seem to have appeased too many of the Citizen’s faithful, with calls rife around social media for January transfer window signing Wilfried Bony to start against Barcelona tonight.

The former Swansea City man made his Man City debut against Newcastle United, coming off the subs bench, but was unable to make it the perfect start to life in Manchester with a goal.

It would’ve taken a brave man to drop Dzeko after his almost perfect performance on Saturday, however, given the fact Bony was the Premier League’s top scorer in 2014, it seems that Man City fans wouldn’t have minded!

Man United, Arsenal… Five stars on their way to the Premier League

With just a few weeks remaining until the end of the season, Premier League clubs are already busy planning for the next campaign and the transfer rumour mill is in full swing ahead of the opening of the summer window.

And, as ever, there’s expected to be plenty of comings and goings as managers look to strengthen their squads as well as get rid of those players who have failed to impress this term.

While there could be a few big deals done between Premier League sides, there are also plenty of names from some of Europe’s biggest clubs that have been heavily linked with a move to England’s top teams in recent weeks as speculation continues to grow.

With links to the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City; here a five of those players who could well be involved in one of the summer’s biggest transfers.

[interaction ]

Edinson Cavani

PSG striker Edinson Cavani is just one player who has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United this summer as Louis van Gaal looks to strengthen his squad.

The Uruguayan has been one of Europe’s most sought after strikers since his Napoli days, and could require a similar fee to the £50m the French giants paid for him back in 2013.

Following their defeat to Barcelona in the Champions League this week, Cavani dismissed rumours he could be on his way to England stating that he would respect his contract. But as we know in football things can change very quickly.

Mats Hummels

Another player that has been heavily linked with a move to the Red Devils is Dortmund defender Mats Hummels.

United are keen to bolster their defence during the window, and German star Hummels is said to be top of their list amid speculation he is ready to quit the Bundesliga.

And these rumours have only gathered pace since the news that Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp announced he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

It now looks increasingly likely that Hummels could be following out the door, with United in pole position to land the centre-back.

Paul Pogba

Letting Paul Pogba leave Old Trafford is arguably Sir Alex Ferguson’s biggest mistake while Manchester United manager.

Since moving to Juventus, the Frenchman has become one of the most coveted midfielders in the world and it’s no surprise he has Europe’s top clubs chasing him.

Exactly the type of player they have been missing; United are said to be desperate to bring him back to the club, while Arsenal and Chelsea have also been linked with moves.

With a number of sides chasing him, Juventus will do well to keep hold of the youngster who could be at the centre of one of the most exciting transfer battles this summer.

Gareth Bale

Football’s most expensive player Gareth Bale continues to be linked with a return to the Premier League amid criticism in Spain for some of his performances this season.

The former Spurs man came under fire from both fans and media once again this week for failing to score in his side’s Champions League encounter with Atletico Madrid and he’s clearly having a difficult time winning them over.

Although Madrid have revealed they have no intention to sell the Welsh star, he continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United and Chelsea who could be set to test Real’s resolve wit a big bid in the near future.

Gonzalo Higuain

With his Napoli side sat seven points off the Champions League places in Serie A, Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain could be set to leave the club if they fail to qualify.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool have been linked with a move for the former Real Madrid man who is believed to have told his side he has no plans to play in the Europa League again next season.

Higuain scored in a tremendous away win at Wolfsburg last night as the Italians all but secured a place in the semi-finals, but unless they win the competition to secure Champions League qualification; Higuain’s time at Napoli could well be coming to an end.

Signing this Barca star makes perfect sense for both Chelsea and Man City

With the title race long since over, Chelsea and Manchester City will already be firmly focused on the summer and the chance to strengthen their squads when the transfer window opens after another absorbing season of Premier League football.

Having failed in the bid to regain the title, Manchester City are set to spend big once again, while newly crowned champions Chelsea will be looking to improve in order to fight off their rivals next season.

And while the saga surrounding Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling continues to dominate the back pages this week, another name emerged as a potential summer signing for two of England’s biggest clubs.

Barcelona midfielder Alex Song has been linked with another move to the Premier League over the coming months, with both Chelsea and City keen on the Cameroonian as they look to bolster their midfield.

The former Arsenal man has impressed this season while on loan at West Ham, and although it’s unlikely he will remain at Upton Park beyond the summer, his stay at the Spanish giants also appears to be nearing its end which has attracted interest from the Premier League’s top two.

Since his move to Barcelona from Arsenal in 2012, the midfielder struggled to hold down a regular place in the team, which saw him arrive at West Ham as a result.

And despite impressing with the Hammers, a season that saw them make a brief challenge for the top-four, the La Liga champions are willing to sell Song this summer as he doesn’t feature in their plans for next season.

And it’s not only is quality in the middle of the park that make him an attractive target for the two clubs in question, but that fact he is classed as a home grown player only increases his value to Chelsea and City and would certainly make him a shrewd summer signing.

Song has shown that he will certainly prove a decent option to have in the squad, and will provide much needed depth to the teams as they continue to chase trophies across a number of competitions.

And while he may not play week in week out, he is someone who can be relied upon to put in a decent performance when called upon.

A move to Chelsea or City must be one that tempts him, and a return to Champions League football, as well as the chance to win the title will surely prove a big lure.

Having arrived at Arsenal when he was just 17, Song ensured he played the three required years before he was 21 to qualify as a home-grown player, a trait that both clubs are looking for as they look to fulfil the quota for next season.

And with suggestions the 27-year-old could be available for as little as £6m, this is a signing that makes a great deal of sense of for Jose Mourinho and Manuel Pellegrini.

Still three years shy of his thirties, Song still has plenty to offer at the top level, and judging by his performances this season, he could be classed as a real bargain should Chelsea or Manchester City win the race for his signature.

[n5lbanner type=”london”]

Should Arsenal really keep him on at the Emirates next season?

Since first breaking onto the scene under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford just a few short seasons ago, Danny Welbeck is someone who has certainly seen his fair share of attention from within the English footballing community.

The 24-year-old striker – now plying his trade in North London under Arsene Wenger – has been spoken of rather highly during his brief career in the Premier League, with some even suggesting that the former Manchester United man is capable of becoming a true England great in the next few years or so.

Having totalled only four solitary league goals throughout the past 2014/15 campaign however, such grand plans for the still developing Danny Welbeck have seemingly been put on hold for now.

Such a meagre return last term simply wasn’t good enough for a player initially sourced for £16 million – and as the Gunners famously have strong competition for places among the many attack-minded players in their squad – the current Arsenal and England forward certainly has his work cut out next year if he is to impress in the English top flight once again.

[ffc-gal cat=”arsenal” no=”5″]

With such a notion in mind then, does the determined no. 23 still have something valuable to offer Arsene Wenger ahead of the 2015/16 campaign, or does his signing at the Emirates simply represent one of the few mistakes Arsenal have recently made in the ever precarious transfer market?

It seems the general option may be split. Some view Danny Welbeck as an extremely hard worker and someone more than willing to put in an adequate shift for his boss, as well as his teammates. He does certainly possess a quick turn of pace in the final third, and when playing with confidence up top, the unpredictable front-man is always eager to impress in front of goal.

Welbeck has played as an out-in-out centre-forward during his time in the Premier League, yet the former Old Trafford favourite has also proven willing to do the business out wide on the flanks often enough to be considered a versatile asset.

At the still promising age of only 24, Danny Welbeck certainly has enough time to make a real name for himself in the English game, and tie his performances down to a truly consistent level. It would definitely seem somewhat premature for anyone within the wider footballing community to completely write the England striker off now – but as the no. 23 is certainly no youngster anymore – time is seemingly running down for Welbeck as he looks to really assert himself successfully and maturely in the Premier League.

However, whilst the current Emirates favourite admittedly puts in the work and could never really be questioned in terms of effort and determination, huge question marks ultimately still surround the fate of Danny Welbeck at a club as high profile as Arsenal. Sure, the former Red Devils front-man would certainly not look out of place doing the business for one of the Premier League’s ‘lesser’ teams shall we say – but does that mean that Welbeck actually has what it takes to lead the line for England and the Gunners as his career plays out further?

The answer could well be no.

In the cold light of day, it does in fact seem like the 24-year-old has been somewhat over-hyped throughout his time in the English game. Yes, he’s relatively quick across the pitch and doesn’t lack confidence when given the chance in front of goal, yet because the striker is evidently lacking in terms of solid technical ability, sometimes looks short of ideas in the final third and often fails to display the footballing intelligence required to truly make it at the top, perhaps it’s fair to say that the current Arsenal front-man will never really become a great player in the modern era.

Ultimately on the basis of last season in particular, the signs seemingly don’t look too promising for the 24-year-old at the Emirates going into the new campaign.

Of course, he’s an admirable trier, and yes his unpredictability can sometimes serve him well on the odd occasion – but as hard work simply doesn’t take you all the way within the ever competitive realms of modern day football – maybe we can suggest that Danny Welbeck will ultimately fail to hit the lofty levels many had expected of him upon his initial emergence within the English game.
