ESPNcricinfo previews the first Test between New Zealand and West Indies in Dunedin

The Preview by Andrew McGlashan in Dunedin02-Dec-20130:00

‘Depleted West Indies face tough ask’

Match FactsTuesday December 3, 2013, Dunedin
Start time 10.30am (2130GMT previous day)The Big PictureNew Zealand ended their previous home season with the crushing disappointment of being denied a series victory over England by one wicket as Matt Prior and Monty Panesar played out the final few, fraught moments in Auckland. Since then it has been a trying time for them, but they begin their new season with a series they should be confident of winning ahead of the sterner challenge of India’s visit. If West Indies had been at full strength – with the likes of Chris Gayle and Kemar Roach available – the teams would have been almost level-pegging at the start, but home advantage and a stronger seam attack make New Zealand the early favourites. However, their Test cricket is far from consistent enough to make that anything more than a speculative judgement.West Indies barely competed in India and the shoe-horned in tour has meant slap-dash preparation for this series, limited to a mix-and-match warm-up game where New Zealand domestic players appeared in the same side as West Indians and a couple of days’ training in Dunedin. If it was a Test series decided on how many layers were being worn, West Indies would be winning.Tim Southee and Trent Boult will aim to replicate the success they had against England•Getty Images

If they start badly in the first Test – and their warm-up period makes that a distinct possibility – the series could unravel for them, but at least it is three Test matches rather than the token two so often see around the world nowadays.New Zealand showed many positive signs when England visited in March, top of the list being the performances of Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner who comprehensively outbowled the visiting seamers. Their spin bowling and top-order batting remain unsteady, though. Daniel Vettori and Jesse Ryder may return later in the season, but this series came too soon.Form guide

West Indies LLWWWWatch out forHamish Rutherford burst into the Test scene at this ground in March with 171 against England, but since then has not been able to raise his bat for a milestone. Firstly he struggled against the moving ball in England then against the spinning one in Bangladesh but he does possess the game to take apart a thin West Indies pace attack. However, the recall of Aaron Redmond to the New Zealand squad is also notice to Rutherford that he won’t be able to live on his dazzling debut for much longer. The second coming of Marlon Samuels as a Test cricketer has produced some outstanding innings, lifting his average from 28.73 when he was banned in 2008 to 36.74 as it stands now. He is a vital part of the middle order with the game to counter-attack and rebuild, a position he has often found himself in. For West Indies’ sake it must be hoped that the renewed controversy over his bowling action does not distract from his main task.Team newsKane Williamson has not recovered sufficiently from his broken thumb so Aaron Redmond will bat at No.3. Doug Bracewell is the pace bowler to miss out although Brendon McCullum did say that some thought had been given to four quicks. However, Williamson’s absence means that Ish Sodhi’s leg spin becomes their lone slow-bowling option.New Zealand 1 Hamish Rutherford, 2 Peter Fulton, 3 Aaron Redmond, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Brendon McCullum (capt), 6 Corey Anderson, 7 BJ Watling (wk), 8 Ish Sodhi, 9 Tim Southee, 10 Neil Wagner, 11 Trent BoultWest Indies need to decide who supports Tino Best; Shannon Gabriel played in Mumbai so is the man in possession or the other option is left-arm Sheldon Cottrell. Ottis Gibson will assess whether Shane Shillingford is in the right mindset for a Test after having his action reported. England managed to bat out two days to save the Test in March. This time there is a suggestion of more life in the pitch with a healthy covering of grass being left on, perhaps because of West Indies’ spin bowling being a strength. West Indies will be pleased that the mercury is due to rise into the mid-20s with a very good forecast for the first four days of the match.Stats and trivia Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who needs 37 runs to reach 11,000, has 150 Test caps, the rest of West Indies’ squad has 260 between them. Chanderpaul will be one of three survivors from the 2008 Test between these sides at University Oval, along with Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum Ish Sodhi, the New Zealand legspinner, has never bowled a ball at University OvalQuotes”We are playing good cricket, we just need to start putting some results together. We know we need to start getting those wins and that starts here.”
“Today’s lovely, it’s back like the Caribbean now so hopefully the weather can be like this for the five days.”

Cook faces up to senior players' failure

‘Australia batted England into submission’

Alastair Cook admitted to the “lowest moment” of his career as England slumped to Ashes defeat in Perth and said several members of his side would be “playing for their future” in the remaining two games of the series. The England captain said conceding a 3-0 lead in the five-match series “hurts like hell” and described the dressing room as “a tough place to be”. It is Cook’s first series loss as captain and England’s first Ashes loss in four series stretching back to 2006-07.But while accepting that “inquests” into the defeat were inevitable, Cook appealed for calm before conclusions are made about the reasons for the loss. In particular, Cook was keen to defend Andy Flower and refuted any suggestion that the England coach should step down.”I want him to carry on,” Cook said. “He’s an outstanding coach and an outstanding person. He’s a great person to have around, especially for me, as a captain and the advice he gives me. It’s not down to him why we’ve lost this. It’s down to the fact we haven’t had enough players in form.”Cook, who has averaged just 26.93 in his last eight Tests against Australia, also reasserted his determination to continue as captain, though he accepted he needed to reflect on some of his tactics and that there would be “people questioning my place”.”There’s always going to be theories,” he said. “There’s always going to be inquests when you lose. The simple fact of the matter is we haven’t had enough players in form with either bat or ball. People in the dressing room know that.”It’s a tough place my batting. I’m putting the work in but not quite getting the results. You can see the feet aren’t always going in the right place. I’ve had a couple of very good balls as well, which doesn’t help. And when I have got in at Brisbane and here, I haven’t gone on to make a bigger score.Alastair Cook admitted that senior players hadn’t performed so far in this series and will be playing for their places in the rest of the series•Getty Images

“But I don’t think the captaincy is affecting my batting. There’s always a strain, but the challenge of being a captain is trying to deal with it. I can honestly say that when I go out there as a batter, I’m thinking as a batter. My mind is not thinking about what’s going on elsewhere.”Of course, if other people who make the decisions don’t think that way, we have to go by that decision. When you lose the Ashes in the way we’ve lost, there will always be people questioning my place and all that kind of stuff. That’s the first place you always look when you lose. As a captain, the buck stops with you. I have to look at am I managing the players right? Am I doing the right things out in the middle? We have to have some honest chats.”Cook also defended his players, despite admitting that several senior figures had endured undistinguished series and that many would be playing for their futures in the remaining two games of the series.”The first thing you do when you lose is look at the hunger and the desire. I can honestly say in our dressing room, both are there. We just haven’t had the skills to match it. Sport is not about trying at all; it’s about delivering. We know we tried as hard as we could and we haven’t delivered.”It’s not just Anderson and Swann who haven’t performed. A lot of us senior batters haven’t performed as well. It’s incredibly frustrating – I know as a batter when you’re not delivering what you’re capable of – there’s not a worse place to be as a player.”I’ll never feel let down by any of the lads that go out there and put on an England shirt. I look into their eyes and I see what they do in training. The way they go about their business and the effort, you don’t see all that.”I’m never going to be embarrassed. We haven’t been good enough, that’s the reason we lost. I’ll never be embarrassed for the way we go about things and the effort the lads put in. It’s a hard thing to say when you’ve been beaten and you deserve to get beaten. It’s never good to admit it, but we have.”When you lose, or even when you win, there’s so many good players around in England wanting to be in the 11 spots we presently hold. So we are always playing for our future. There’s always a balancing act with sides when you lose with trying to introduce new players. Are they better than the players you have?”

Veja!

Finch and White extend Australia's mastery

More than 400 runs made for an entertaining start to the Twenty20 series – and a tough night for the bowlers – but Australia were more comfortable winners than the 13-run margin suggested in Hobart.

The Report by Andrew McGlashan29-Jan-2014Australia 4 for 213 (White 75, Finch 52) beat England 9 for 200 (Bopara 65*, Coulter-Nile 4-30) by 13 runs

‘More futile runs for Bopara’

More than 400 runs made for an entertaining start to the Twenty20 series – and a tough night for the bowlers – but Australia were more comfortable winners than the 13-run margin suggested in Hobart.By the time Ravi Bopara went on a late six-hitting surge, England (who would dearly have loved one of those blows the other night in Adelaide) were out of contention although Australia will have been grateful that they had as many as 4 for 213 to work with.Their total, on a pristine pitch and with one boundary of barely 50 yards towards the building site, was set up by an opening stand of 106 in less than 10 overs between Aaron Finch and Cameron White. Who needs David Warner? For a while it looked like Finch would replicate his record-breaking hundred at the Ageas Bowl last year, when he slammed 156, so there will have been a degree of relief from England when he was cut-off for the small matter of 52 off 31 balls but considerable damage had already been done.White top-scored on his return to the international scene with 75 off 43 balls to strengthen claims for a place in the World Twenty20 squad. He was given a life on 11, when Joe Root was late to react to a low edge at slip off Broad and went on to produce a crisp innings, including four sixes, with his driving over extra cover a particular highlight. Again, a simple fielding error hurt England badly.England began positively through Alex Hales, who timed the ball beautifully square of the wicket and has good cause to be eyeing a top-bracket IPL deal, but when faced with a target over 200 every lean over sees the asking rate shoot up and the requirement to exploit the Powerplay comes with risks.Moises Henriques, who is on a plane to South Africa tomorrow, put Australia on course for victory by removing Luke Wright and Hales in his first over. When Eoin Morgan gave himself too much room against Glenn Maxwell it was quickly becoming a lost cause. It did not take long for Australia to get going after winning the toss. The first six of the innings went to White, when he swung Jade Dernbach over midwicket, but Finch’s soon followed and it was timing, as well as brute force, which allowed the ball to sail over long-on. After the six-over Powerplay, Australia were 0 for 52, which did not represent a disaster for England, but the major issue for them was the lack of wickets, which just gave already free-flowing batsmen even more freedom.Finch’s fifty came from 26 balls, the same number as it took him on that heady night in Southampton. Bopara’s first over cost 12 and Danny Briggs’ 14 as Broad’s plan to take pace off the ball had little effect. But it was not just bludgeoning, especially the way White played Briggs with deft deflections and strong sweeping. The hundred stand came up inside 10 overs – Australia’s sixth three-figure opening stand in T20s – and it ended as their third highest when Finch picked out deep midwicket. White had plenty of time to reach his own hundred, but fell in a curious two-ball period against Wright which firstly involved being caught off a waist-high no-ball – checked lengthily by the third umpire – before he was pinned lbw next delivery.Chris Lynn made a good impression on his Australia debut•Getty Images

Maxwell appeared more interested in reverse rather than conventional hitting. He nailed one switch hit over deep point for six but fell trying a similar effort off Bopara in an over that cost just three to follow one from Broad that went for four.It was, perhaps, no surprise that Briggs and Dernbach were among the most expensive bowlers – neither have played any cricket of late. At the toss, Broad said he wanted to show faith in the players who had performed well last year, but the absence of Ben Stokes, especially, was a surprise. Dernbach’s first two overs had cost 25 and his last two cost the same (including another full-toss no-ball) as Australia found a late kick just as England threatened to pull them back.Chris Lynn, who was handed his debut alongside 20-year-old legspinner James Muirhead, launched his fourth ball into the stands and added two more to ensure there was no let-up as the total crossed 200. It was the type of striking that has made his name in the Big Bash League over the last couple of years and another example of the confidence surging through Australia’s young players at the moment.Muirhead, meanwhile, was given a gentler introduction than may have been expected when he was brought onto bowl with England’s top order but he had to contend with a boundary that was barely a drop-kick away. He still gave the ball a decent rip as he had done during his tour match appearances and had the joy of a first wicket when Tim Bresnan missed a slog.Bopara dented a few figures with some meaty blows – his seven sixes meaning both sides hit 11 in their innings – and kept a full house entertained with only the fifth half-century to come from No. 7 in a Twenty20 international but it came too late for England.

ScorecardSouth Australia’s bowlers failed to dismiss Victoria in the follow-on and had to settle for a draw at the Adelaide Oval. The two points put South Australia at No. 2 in the Sheffield Shield, level with toppers Western Australia on 26 points but behind on net run rate. The final day had begun with Victoria on 2 for 93 in the follow-on, still 109 away from avoiding an innings defeat. Marcus Stoinis and Cameron White resumed steadily enough, stretching their overnight stand of 64 to 113. However, they fell in quick succession to Joe Mennie, and Victoria’s first-innings centurion Glenn Maxwell was lbw to Chadd Sayers for 4. At 5 for 171, Victoria still trailed by 31.David Hussey and Matthew Wade had a 45-run stand that ensured South Australia would have to bat again, but it was the partnership between Wade and John Hastings that thwarted the hosts’ hopes of victory. Hastings made 47 and Wade remained unbeaten on 71; Victoria were ahead by 132 when the game was called off.
