Darren Stevens recorded his third Championship century of the season as Kent piled on the runs against Division Two rivals Gloucestershire on a rain-shortened second day. Responding to Kent’s 474 all out, the visitors went in at stumps on 80 without loss after 29 overs to trail by 394 at the mid-point of this 162nd Canterbury Cricket Week clash.Stevens, who earlier in the month was charged by the ICC for his failure toreport a corrupt approach while playing for the Dhaka Gladiators in February, made light of the pressure to build on his overnight score of 98 not out.Heavy morning showers had delayed Stevens and the resumption of Kent’s first innings until umpires’ inspections at 1.30pm and 2pm, with play finally allowed to start at 2.20pm. The 37-year-old Stevens needed only two deliveries to reach his hundred by clipping a loose delivery from left-arm seamer David Payne to the ropes at square leg for the 18th boundary of a 127-ball ton.His innings ended selflessly for 126 when – with his side needing seven runs for a fifth batting bonus point and with only four balls remaining before the 110-over cut-off – Stevens top-edged an attempted pull against Benny Howell to be caught by Michael Klinger at short extra cover.Home captain James Tredwell followed in the next over for a season’s best 48 when he steered a Craig Miles legcutter to Chris Dent at second slip to make it 399 for 8. With useful double-figure contributions throughout the tail, including an unbeaten 44 by Calum Haggett, Kent reached 474 before last man Charlie Shreck lost his leg stump just after 4.30pm.Meanwhile, Kent confirmed that Matthew Coles, their 23-year-old strike bowler, has turned down a contract extension and is set to leave the club.

Each one of the players will be aged under 22 and each of them will come from an inner-city community that might, without this competition, have not enjoyed the opportunity to play organised cricket.The competition is the final of the City Cup. The tournament was devised by Scyld Berry, the cricket correspondent of the Sunday Telegraph and formerly the editor of Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, who was concerned that the England team no longer provided a true reflection of the nation it is meant to represent.In particular, Berry highlighted the dominance of players who learned their game either at private schools, in South Africa or even in South African private schools. Combined with the lack of cricket on free-to-view television, Berry felt there was a danger that cricket was becoming an irrelevance to large parts of the country and that there was no obvious route into professional cricket for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.The City Cup has grown each year since its inception in 2009. Eight regions are now involved – London (south), London (north), Leicester, Luton, Birmingham, Wolverhampton, Manchester and Bradford. Two players from each of the eight teams will be selected to train at Lord’s with Mark Alleyne, the MCC head coach, on September 28, while the following day at Wardown Park in Luton, there will be a game between MCC Young Cricketers and the City Cup players. In 2009, the City Cup XI beat a Middlesex XI half of which had played first-team cricket with the other half drawn from their academy.Following that game, Alleyne will select as many of the City Cup players as he likes to become MCC Young Cricketers. He has selected a player in each of the last two years, one pace bowler, one spinner, both of south Asian origin.The aim is to spread the competition to 16 inner-city areas and provide a pathway into professional cricket for those who had become somewhat disenfranchised from the mainstream game.”A pathway to the top has been established for someone playing outside the traditional club and county structures like the ECB Premier Leagues,” Berry explained. “Thousands play on poorly maintained council pitches without any chance of progressing. But now, turn up at the nets at the start of a season and you could be a professional cricketer within a year.”

Whatmore said he would apply tough love with minimal sympathy because he held his charges responsible for their own downfall.”It wasn’t according to plan. We expected the opposition to come back strong but I don’t think they did. We orchestrated most of our dismissals ourselves,” Whatmore said. “I am trying to get a reason for it, whether its complacency or whether they thought they could carry on from 400 runs where they left off.”When asked whether he would admonish them, Whatmore was frank. “You need to do what you need to do and they have to allow me to do that. But I am not sure. We will know a bit more tomorrow,” he said.Recent history suggests Pakistan may need a bigger lead. After being bowled out for 99 by England in February last year, Pakistan went on to win the match by dismissing their opposition for 141 and then scoring 365 in their second innings. England had to chase 324 and fell 71 runs short, with Pakistan’s spinners sharing six wickets between them in the second innings.Whatmore is using that win as inspiration but South Africa are 29 ahead with plenty of batting to come. He knows the spinners will need something substantial to work: “It will be nice to have a reasonable bank of runs. Then the plan is for the spinners to come in.”

– Fizemos uma grande Copa São Paulo e tiramos aprendizados importantes da competição. Vimos que sempre podemos dar algo a mais, nos superar. Isso vai ser muito importante agora nos próximos campeonatos.
