Neil Fairbrother to retire

Neil Fairbrother has announced his retirement from first-class cricket at the end of this season

Lancashire CCC Press Release05-Sep-2002Neil Fairbrother has announced his retirement from first-class cricket at the end of this season. Fairbrother, 38 has been playing his county cricket with Lancashire since 1982 and has a career that included 4 B&H Cup wins, 3 NatWest Trophies and 3 National/Sunday League triumphs, in addition to this, he captained the side in 1992 and 1993.Fairbrother commented, "I have always said that I wanted to continue playing while I was enjoying my cricket and maintaining a standard which I found acceptable. Unfortunately, performances this season have fallen short of the standards I set myself, this obviously lessens the enjoyment of playing the game at this level."He continued, "However, I have had a long and successful career and I am proud of what I have achieved. I have played in some great teams, with some great players and perhaps most important of all, I have made some great friends."Club Chairman, Jack Simmons paid tribute, " He has had a wonderful career going back to 1982. I remember batting with him when he made 96 not out in his first game for Lancashire as a pro and he has provided lots of terrific memories since. He will be badly missed and I’m sure there will be a few tears when he goes."Cricket Manager Mike Watkinson added, Harvey and I made our Lancashire debuts in the same match and it is a tribute to his commitment, as well as his ability, that he is still playing at this level 20 years later. He has been a devoted club-man."Fairbrother’s new career will be with ISM, the sports management firm which is run by Andrew Chandler, his final home match is anticipated to be the Lancashire Lightning fixture against Northants Steelbacks on Sunday at Old Trafford, start is at 12pm.

England batsman Graham Thorpe will miss the Ashes tour this winter after informing the team’s management that he is unavailable. So ends an unfortunate chapter, or perhaps even the whole international book, in the career of a supremely talented player who has denied himself the chance of ultimate fulfilment.Chairman of selectors David Graveney confirmed that Thorpe had made the decision because he did not want to be away from his family. “When I spoke to Graham he told me that he didn’t want to let anyone down. Obviously he has been in goodform recently with a couple of hundreds so there was no doubt about his ability to play, but he felt at the end of the day that he couldn’t commit himself to being away from home for that period of time.”There was no pressure brought to bear on him by the selectors. We respectGraham’s views at this time and fully understand the difficulties he has hadover the last six months.”Thorpe himself issued a statement through Surrey. “I have informed the selectors that I wish to withdraw from the tour to Australia.”During the six weeks away from the game my personal situation did improve and I felt that I was able to make myself available for the tour.”Since returning to the game I have found it difficult to consistently concentrate on cricket and I must be totally focused for the tour.”I therefore feel it is better to be honest with the England cricket team, the management, and myself now, rather than during the Ashes tour.”It would be wrong for me to go to Australia purely for the financial gain that it would bring me whilst I am finding it difficult to fully focus on the job in hand 100% of the time.”This has been the hardest decision of my cricket career. I ask that I may be given the respect and privacy required so that I may recover to play cricket at highest level next season.”Thorpe withdrew, first from one-day international cricket and then from all cricket as he attempted to rebuild his life after the distressing break-up of his marriage. However, in late August he contacted the selectors saying he was in the right frame of mind to make himself available for the tour. To demonstrate his commitment, he returned to the Surrey side with considerable success, scoring 143 against Hampshire in the Championship and, only last weekend, 114 against Gloucestershire in his first Norwich Union League match for two years. The England management accepted that he was mentally fit for the Ashes tour after he had convinced them of the fact at a series of meetings, but his absence now is a considerable blow to selection plans leaving a significant hole in the batting order. Thorpe’s record against Australia is impressive, with three hundreds in his 16 Tests contributing to the 1,235 runs scored at an average of 45.The announcement of a replacement player and the England one-day squad for the series in Australia this winter will be made by next Monday at the latest. The selectors may look no further than The Oval in that Thorpe’s Surrey colleague Mark Ramprakash must be near the top of their list, as could be opening batsman Ian Ward who has been scoring phenomenally for the champions. Robert Key of Kent played two matches at the end of the summer without either cementing a place or looking totally out of place, while Nick Knight of Warwickshire has been in prolific form. Owais Shah of Middlesex should not be discounted, either.Whoever is chosen, it will not be possible to compensate for Thorpe’s experience or the fact that, at his best, he has been one of the few English batsmen to be talked of in terms of world class. The simple fact is, however, that he has not been at his best because of his mental turmoil. Even when being interviewed immediately after his selection for the Ashes tour party, he sounded a tormented soul and it was evident that, whatever his protestations to the contrary, all his demons had not been exorcised. It might well be that the English international game has seen the end of Thorpe the cricketer. One can only hope that the eminently likeable Thorpe the man can get his affairs in order to lead the rest of his life outside cricket as he would himself wish.

Forest dealt Brennan Johnson transfer blow

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a blow in their bid to keep Brennan Johnson at the City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to Alan Nixon’s report for The Sun on Sunday (via The 72), with the journalist claiming that Brentford are set to make a fresh bid of £6m for the versatile Forest winger.

The Bees were reported to have already seen an offer of £3.5m turned down for the 20-year-old this summer, with Dane Murphy’s side believed to be demanding a fee between £8m and £10m in order to part with the Wales international.

It is also claimed that the new Forest CEO is planning to offer the forward a new deal at the City Ground in an attempt to dampen the interest in his services, although no progress in these contract talks has been reported as yet.

Forest fans will be gutted

While Brentford’s potential offer for Johnson still falls a little short of Nottingham Forest’s reported asking price, the fact that the Premier League side are getting closer to lodging an acceptable bid for the 20-year-old could have left Forest fans gutted.

With there now being just £2m of a difference between the Bees’ bid and the £8m figure at which Forest are reportedly willing to begin negotiations, this is a gap which would appear to be relatively easy to close for Thomas Frank’s side.

Considering just how much raw talent Johnson quite clearly possesses, should Murphy indeed go on to sanction his sale this summer, it would not bode well for Nottingham Forest’s Championship aspirations this season.

Indeed, over his 43 League One appearances while on loan with Lincoln City last term, the £360k-rated man bagged 11 goals, registered 12 assists and created four big chances for his teammates, taking 2.3 shots and making 0.7 key passes per game.

These metrics saw the man Sabri Lamouchi dubbed an “unbelievable” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.98, ranking the £2.5k-per-week winger as Michael Appleton’s sixth-best performer in the third tier last season.

As such, the addition of the 20-year-old to Chris Hughton’s first team squad ahead of 2021/22 would very much look to provide the Reds with an injection of both goals and assists, something they were desperately lacking last time out.

However, with Brentford’s interest in Johnson not likely to go away any time soon, whether or not Forest benefit from the youngster’s ability in their upcoming Championship campaign is very much up in the air at present, something which is sure to leave the City Ground faithful on edge.

South Australia’s hunt for a big-name signing has finally come off with Younis Khan, the Pakistan batsman, agreeing to a short-term deal with the state for the 2008-09 season. The Redbacks made their plans known last week after failing to convince any major Australian players to move to Adelaide and the coach Mark Sorell was pleased to have his man.”Securing a batsman of Younis’ calibre will provide our young South Australian batsmen with unprecedented experience,” he said. “Our top order is really excited by the news. We expect Younis will play a key role in making sure the Redbacks are competitive this season and ensuring our bowlers have good targets to work with.”Sorell said there were specific details of the deal that still needed to be arranged but he expected Younis to arrive before the start of the domestic season in October. Younis will only be available until shortly before Christmas due to Pakistan’s Test and one-day commitments with India. If South Australia make the finals of either the Pura or FR Cups he may be free to return.

Woosnam: Great decision for Ward to sign new Palace deal

The Athletic’s Crystal Palace reporter Matt Woosnam believes it’s a great decision that Joel Ward has signed a new contract with the club.

Ward has signed a two-year contract extension which will take him up to the summer of 2023 at Selhurst Park and told Palace TV: “I’m delighted. I think it’s great to have committed the future to the club.”

Palace are under new leadership with Patrick Vieira appointed as the club’s new manager this summer, and he has looked to assemble his side already. This is because along with the new contract for Ward, Palace have made four summer signings with Michael Olise, Jacob Montes, Marc Guehi and Joachim Andersen all joining Crystal Palace.

On the new contract for Ward, Woosnam told Football FanCast: “Joel Ward has obviously signed and that’s been announced by Palace and I think that’s a great decision in the end.”

Ward has been a terrific servant for Crystal Palace as he has been with the club nine years and played 273 times for the club, scoring five goals and creating eleven more.

Whilst operating as a right-back mostly, Ward has also played on the side of defence at left-back, as well as appearing as a centre-back on a couple of occasions in the past.

Under new management and with new faces arriving at the football club, Crystal Palace will be hoping that they can improve on last season’s 14th place this upcoming campaign.

Hatfield: Aston Villa waiting to be convinced by Keinan Davis

Aston Villa were hoping to see striker Keinan Davis score some goals on loan before making a decision on his long-term future at the club, journalist Luke Hatfield has told Football FanCast.

The plan this season was to send Davis out on loan, with The Telegraph’s John Percy previously reporting that Stoke City were hopeful of bringing the 23-year-old to the bet365 Stadium.

However, those plans have been disrupted after Davis picked up an injury that has ruled him out of action for the next two months.

It is a frustrating development for both the club and player, with the former believing this campaign was an opportunity for their centre-forward to really prove himself.

Asked by FFC what Villa’s long-term plans for Davis are, Hatfield of the Express & Star replied:

“I think for them, they’re waiting to be convinced by him in terms of his goalscoring abilities. He’s come up with the odd goal here and there, but we’ve never really seen him go on a run of starts. That’s the issue for him.

“I think they want to be convinced by his performances in regular first-team football, which is why a loan move was so important for him.”

It is certainly a disappointing situation for Davis, who is likely to see very little action at Villa once he recovers from his injury following the surprise arrival of Danny Ings from Southampton.
