Watford in talks with Rangers’ Kamara

Steven Gerrard could be set for a huge blow at Rangers this summer, as Watford are reportedly in talks to sign Glen Kamara, which could well tempt the midfielder away from Ibrox.

According to Italian football journalist Gianluigi Longari on Twitter, Watford are in ongoing negotiations with Rangers as they look to bring the Finland international to Vicarage Road this summer, following their promotion back to the top-flight.

Kamara has established himself as a key player at Ibrox since completing a bargain switch from Dundee in 2019, going on to make 106 appearances for Gerrard’s side, contributing four goals and five assists in that time.

The former Arsenal youngster played a key part in Rangers winning the league title unbeaten last season, making 33 appearances in the Scottish top-flight, whilst he was also a regular in their Europa League campaign.

After such an impressive season, it is no surprise that Premier League sides are starting to take notice of Kamara, and there will be plenty of eyes on him at Euro 2020, where he has already shown his quality for Finland in their 1-0 win against Denmark and 1-0 defeat against Russia.

During the defeat against Stanislav Cherchesov’s side earlier this week, Kamara earned the praise of BBC commentators Robyn Cowen and Martin Keown, who said:

“He’s really bursting onto the ball there, he’s impressed me has Kamara today, as he did in the other game

“He’s really important for Finland.”

“He has been described as a Rolls Royce.”

The 25-year-old reportedly earns just £6.2k per week at Ibrox and whilst there is the offer of Champions League football at Rangers next season, he may well have his head turned by the wages and Premier League football that Watford can offer.

Gerrard would be gutted to lose one of his most influential players ahead of next season but there may be little he can do to convince Kamara to stay should Watford meet Rangers’ valuation for the midfielder this summer.

Real Madrid eye Dominic Calvert-Lewin move

When Farhad Moshiri sat down with Bill Kenwright and Marcel Brands a few months ago to speak about Everton’s recruitment, there would have been excitement in their words.

They were looking forward to a summer of Carlo Ancelotti flexing his muscle to strengthen the club’s hopes of Champions League football. However, life is never simple, especially at Goodison Park.

What’s the word?

Ancelotti is no longer the manager of Everton after he moved back to Real Madrid in a shock turn of events.

The Toffees have been on the lookout for a new manager but with talks to lure Nuno Santo or Rafa Benitez to the club stalling, they’ve been dealt a potential setback.

According to reports (via The Daily Mail), Everton’s former manager could return to rob them of their star striker; Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Madrid are apparently keen on signing the Englishman and a bid of £50m may be enough to tempt Moshiri and Brands into selling.

Huge blow on the cards

If Everton did go on to lose Calvert-Lewin this summer, it would be a catastrophic blow to the new manager and the club’s supporters.

The forward has come out of nowhere in recent years to become a real shining light at Goodison Park.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-manager-transfer-nuno-conte-wood-marcelo” title= “Read the latest Everton manager and transfer news!”]

Last term ,he became the first player to score over 20 goals in a single season for the Toffees since a certain Romelu Lukaku.

Calvert-Lewin eventually ended the campaign with 21 strikes, form that earned him a place in England’s squad for the ongoing European Championships.

In terms of finding the net, the England striker was untouchable for Everton last term. He was the only player in Ancelotti’s ranks to find the net on double figures in the league as he led the line in dominant fashion.

With that in mind, fans of the club should be running for the hills if he departs. It would leave the Merseyside outfit desperately short in attack and there is no guarantee that a replacement would score as many goals.

When a club like Real Madrid have an interest in a player, it can often be worrying news for supporters of said player’s club and that is exactly the case right now for Everton.

Signed from Sheffield United for just over £1m, the club would be making a hefty profit but the financial gain of securing Champions League football for next term would significantly outweigh that.

Of course, finishing in the top four is an incredibly arduous task for Everton but their best chance of doing that is with Calvert-Lewin in the squad. They simply have to keep him.

AND in other news, Brands must seal Everton swoop for 6 ft 2 monster who plays like a “freight train”…

Chief Executive Peter Anderson responds to England manager's reported remarks

Somerset Chief Executive Peter Anderson was back at his desk at the County Ground this morning after returning from a few days away, and reflected on the recent events out in New Zealand

Richard Walsh28-Feb-2002Somerset Chief Executive Peter Anderson was back at his desk at the County Ground this morning after returning from a few days away, and reflected on the recent events out in New Zealand. He told me, “Somerset as a club is an England supporter, and like everyone else was disappointed that they lost the one day series to New Zealand.”Mr Anderson continued, “However it was a great effort to come back from two nil down which was also the case against India, so there is clear evidence that the England side is improving in the One Day discipline.”The Somerset chief went on, “I, together with my coaches, were very disappointed to read Duncan Fletcher’s reported remarks intimating that some of the England players could not dive about on the field in an effective manner, and that it was the fault of the counties.”He continued,”It is easy to say these things and by doing so Duncan Fletcher raises the criticism from the counties that whatever the players shortcomings are it is never his fault.”Mr Anderson concluded, “The question he needs to answer is that where there are shortcomings in his players does he ever liaise with county coaches and if so how often. If he has done so and the fault still exists then the counties would accept the blame, but so must he as the England manager and his coaches”

Takumi Minamino wants Liverpool return

An update has emerged regarding Takumi Minamino’s plans for pre-season with Liverpool amid transfer interest from Southampton..

What’s the talk?

The 26-year-old has admitted that he wants to return to Merseyside for pre-season and compete for his place in the squad. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Southampton and Ralph Hasenhuttl would reportedly like to re-sign the Japan international if Liverpool decide to sell him.

Minamino told Atsuto Uchida, as transcribed by Goal.com: “I don’t know what will happen, but for now, for the preseason, I’d like to go back to Liverpool and do my best there.”

Last August, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp called Minamino a “super professional” after the Reds’ Community Shield clash with Arsenal.

The German told Liverpool’s official website: “So, yes, he can be a real player for us – that was always clear. He came in in the most difficult period of all our lives, I would say, and had to adapt to different things, being alone in England in the lockdown and all that stuff. That’s all not something that’s nice. But he dealt really well with it because he’s a super professional.

“So I’m really pleased for him that he could score the goal today and that’s another big step for him.”

Fans would hate it

Hasenhuttl must avoid making a grave error over Minamino this summer. The Saints boss should be looking elsewhere in the transfer market instead of trying to bring the midfielder back to St Mary’s for a second spell due to his poor performances for the club this year.

The Japan international did not do enough on the pitch to suggest that Southampton should shell out a transfer fee to bring him back to the south coast on a permanent basis.

The former Salzburg man has made it clear that he would like to earn himself a place in Klopp’s squad at Liverpool next season, so Hasenhuttl should take that hint and drop all interest in him. This update suggests that not only is he not good enough to warrant signing, Minamino is also not particularly keen on joining the Saints, as he would rather be a squad player at Anfield. Therefore, Southampton should be turning their attentions elsewhere.

Minamino caught the eye with two goals in his first three appearances for Southampton. However, he failed to kick on after that, not managing to find the net any more after that quick start, and his overall performances left plenty to be desired. The 26-year-old averaged a meagre WhoScored rating of 6.42 across 10 Premier League appearances for Southampton, which ranked him 15th in the Saints’ squad.

This shows that he was not up to the standard required during his time on the south coast and Saints fans – some of whom vented their disappointment with his performances last term – would probably hate to see the club bring him back as they would not be pleased to see him struggling on the pitch again next season.

Canterbury Cricket name their champions

Canterbury Cricket celebrated their 125th jubilee at the weekend and as part of their festivities they selected the best men’s and women’s teams to have represented the province

12-Mar-2002Canterbury Cricket celebrated their 125th jubilee at the weekend and as part of their festivities they selected the best men’s and women’s teams to have represented the province. The men’s team was: Walter Hadlee (captain), Dan Reese (vice-captain), Graham Dowling, Roger Blunt, Brian Hastings, Nathan Astle, Chris Cairns, Richard Hadlee, John Ward, Dick Motz, Tom Burtt. Chris Harris (12th man).Walter Hadlee represented Canterbury from 1933-52 and scored 3183 runs for Canterbury at an average of 43.6. For New Zealand, in a career that spanned World War 2, he hit one century and two fifties and he lead New Zealand expertly on the famous 1949 tour of England. He captained New Zealand in eight of his 11 Test matches.Opening the innings with Blunt was Dowling who, from 1958-72 scored 3690 runs for Canterbury at an average of just under 40. In Tests for New Zealand, he scored three Test centuries and 11 half centuries in a career that brought 2306 runs, an average of 31 and a highest Test score of 239 scored against India at Lancaster Park. He captained New Zealand in 19 Tests.Blunt played 27 matches for Canterbury from 1917-25 and made 1886 runs for Canterbury averaging nearly 38 with four centuries. He had nine Tests for New Zealand, a highest score of 96 and an average of 27.5. A president of the MCC for many years, he was regarded as one of the greatest all-round sportsmen of his time. His selection plaque will be presented to his first school, Waihi School in South Canterbury.Hastings scored 3540 runs at an average of 31 during 72 matches for Canterbury from 1961-77. He had a highest score off 226 and in his international career he hit four Test centuries and seven half centuries in his 1510 runs posted at an average of 30.It is a reflection of the pressures of modern cricket that Nathan Astle has scored only 1167 runs for Canterbury, but at the average of just under 43. He made his debut in 1991 and in a prolific international career, to the start of the summer, he had six Test centuries and 12 half centuries.New Zealand didn’t feature in official Test matches when Reese was playing but he was regarded as a brilliant all-rounder in a career that lasted from 1895 until 1921. He scored 2066 runs for Canterbury at 25.5 and in his time played with Dr W G Grace and against Pelham ‘Plum’ Warner and Victor Trumper.Cairns is the first of the all-rounders selected. He started with the Canterbury side in 1990 and has a batting average of nearly 29 and he has taken 92 wickets at 21. But he has played much more cricket for New Zealand and hit four Test centuries and 19 half centuries. He should be the second Cantabrian to take 200 Test wickets. There was never any doubt that Richard Hadlee would be included in the side. He scored more than 2000 runs for Canterbury and more than 3000 for New Zealand. He took 285 wickets at 16 for Canterbury and 431 Test wickets at 22. In a career from 1971 to 1989 he is undeniably New Zealand’s finest cricketer.Sharing the new ball duties with Hadlee and Cairns will be Motz. He played from 1957-69 and took 239 wickets for Canterbury at an average of 19. He was the first New Zealander to take 100 Test wickets and with the bat he hit a century and three 50s for Canterbury. It is said of him that he never turned in a poor performance. With Blunt’s leg-spin and the left-arm slow mediums of Reese, there might have been sufficient slow bowling but the selectors opted for a specialist; they would like to have had room for two, they said.Their choice was Burtt, who took 241 wickets for Canterbury during his career from 1943-55 at an average of just over 20. For New Zealand, he played only 10 matches, but he had 33 wickets at 35 and he had an outstanding tour of England in 1949 when he took 128 wickets at 23 runs apiece. The wicket-keeper of the team is Ward. He played 54 matches for Canterbury from 1959-71 and eight for New Zealand. For Canterbury he took 136 catches and had 17 stumpings and, for New Zealand, there were 16 Test catches and 1 stumping. There were injuries and selection disappointments but our selectors agree that he was the best specialist ‘keeper ever to play for Canterbury. The 12th man, who must have been unlucky to miss selection was Harris. He had scored over 3000 runs for Canterbury since 1989 at an incredible average of 61 and taken 64 wickets at 33. His 19 matches for New Zealand were fragmented so he was always fighting for a regular place. But there could be no doubting his value, over a long career, as an irrepressible fielder; he is always a danger to any batsmen and constantly delights the spectators with his special talents. The women’s team named was: Leslie Murdoch (nee Shankland), Pat Quickenden (nee Moore), Shirley Cowles (nee McCaw), Ann McKenna, Debbie Hockley, Phyllis Blackler, Jenny Olson (nee Lowe), Sue Rattray, Sarah Illingworth, Sue Brown (nee Teale), Catherine Campbell.Murdoch scored 2072 runs at an average of 36.35 with one century and 17 50s. She captained Canterbury for 13 seasons from 1975-1991, of which 12 times were national title winning efforts.Quickenden played 55 times for Canterbury from 1947-68, scoring 2254 runs with five centuries and 10 50s at nearly 38 while also taking 152 wickets at 13.66.Cowles hit two centuries and 10 half centuries in a 44-match career from 1953-78.McKenna played for Canterbury over 17 seasons from 1961 and scored 2759 runs at 28 and hit three centuries and 12 50s.A 17-season career was also the record of perhaps the greatest cricketer of all that New Zealand has produced in Hockley. Her record for Canterbury was 2827 runs at an average of just under 50. She hit eight centuries and 15 50s.With a highest score of 202, 18 50s and 3424 runs at more than 40 as well as 312 wickets at 11 made for an outstanding record for Blackler in a career spread from 1935-66.Olson played 71 matches, hit 2186 runs which included seven half centuries as well as 132 wickets at just over 12 per wicket in 21 seasons spread from 1961-85.Rattray’s leg spinners accounted for 228 victims at an average of less than 11 while with the bat she hit 1754 runs at just under 23 in a span from 1966-85.Illingworth was quick to make her mark as wicket-keeper and in only 20 matches, during eight seasons for Canterbury from 1986-96 she took 37 catches and 17 stumpings.Brown’s opening bowling was the stuff of legends with 283 wickets at 9.12. She played from 1973-91.From 1983-2000, Campbell picked up 146 wickets at just over 20 and capped it all with a World Cup for New Zealand in her last season.
