Robinson backs Wood to West Ham

Speaking to Football Insider, Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson has raved over Burnley striker Chris Wood as West Ham United allegedly a swoop.

The Lowdown: Hammers links to Wood emerge…

The striker search has been well documented since club record signing Sebastien Haller departed the London Stadium in January.

After failing to sign a new forward in that window, West Ham have since been linked to a host of options – with the most prominent being Tammy Abraham, Youssef En-Nesyri, Adam Armstrong and Ivan Toney (ExWHUemployee).

Recently, however, links have emerged to Clarets forward Wood.

Indeed, Football Insider claimed last week that West Ham have now joined the race for his signature alongside Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Everton.

The Latest: Robinson raves over Wood…

Reacting to FI’s report, Robinson has raved over the prospect of West Ham signing Wood this summer and believes he would be a ‘great option’ and ‘fantastic signing’ for David Moyes.

“His record speaks for itself, his stats are incredible. He always scores goals,” explained the former Spurs keeper (via Football Insider).

“He is very fit and picks up barely any injuries and he scores goals on a regular basis. I think he’d be a great option for West Ham as much as I wouldn’t want to see him leave Burnley.

“Woody knows where the net is and he would score a lot of goals at West Ham. He would be a fantastic signing for them.

“I suspect Burnley would do everything they can to keep hold of him though. The way that West Ham play he would be the ideal signing.”

The Verdict: Great striker, but not for £30m…

As explained by Football Insider, it is understood that Burnley will demand at least £30m for the New Zealander’s signature.

Wood possesses obvious quality, which is evident through his 12-goal haul last season and impressive average of 2.1 shots on goal per 90 in the Premier League (WhoScored).

Only star West Ham man Michail Antonio (2.4) and 2020/2021 loan sensation Jesse Lingard (2.6) managed higher averages last year, but for that lofty price tag, he just isn’t worth it in our opinion.

At 29-years-old, the towering 6 foot 3 attacker will arguably only decline from here-on-in – with there being much younger and homegrown targets who could cost a similar amount.

Abraham, for instance, is widely reported to be valued at around £40m.

While that is still a heavy price to pay, the Irons would be getting a lot more value for their money given the Englishman is still only 23 and has bagged 21 top flight goals in 37 starts over the last two seasons (WhoScored).

Brinkley and Love earn advantage for Durham

James Brinkley seized his second chance of a first-class career by bringing a Gloucestershire charge to an abrupt halt at Chester-le-Street today

Tim Wellock21-Apr-2001James Brinkley seized his second chance of a first-class career by bringing a Gloucestershire charge to an abrupt halt at Chester-le-Street today. The Scotland-born, Australia-raised seamer took 5-9 in 22 balls to finish with 6-32 as the visitors slumped from 188 for four to 198 all out.Queenslander Martin Love then stroked his second half-century of the match, finishing on 63 not out, as Durham reached 104 for two in the second innings to lead by 148.Brinkley’s previous best was the 6-98 he took on his debut for Worcestershire seven years ago. Injury restricted him to 19 games in four seasons before he was released and he played for Herefordshire last season.Neil Killeen apart, Brinkley looked as ordinary as the rest of the Durham attack as Kim Barnett led Gloucestershire’s recovery from four for two. Ian Harvey thrashed 36 off 34 balls and 42 runs came off the first six overs after lunch, 15 coming off one over from Steve Harmison. But the rot set in when Barnett’s dashing innings of 82 off 106 balls ended when he flashed at a widish ball from Brinkley and sliced to gully. There was no such extravagance from Love, who again looked totally composed as he reached 50 off 100 balls. Following the early loss of skipper Jon Lewis, bowled by his namesake for one, Love put on 54 with Michael Gough and shared an unbroken stand of 46 with Jimmy Daley.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa must unleash Leif Davis

Amid all the talk of Leeds United eyeing potential new signings at centre-back and left-back in this summer transfer window, Marcelo Bielsa could save the club millions by unleashing Leif Davis next season in the Premier League.

Reports in recent days and weeks have suggested that the likes of Stade Brest’s Romain Perraud and Sampdoria’s Omar Colley, are among the names being discussed as Bielsa looks to strengthen his back-line.

But in Davis, he could unleash someone with a lot of potential and who is already getting a taste of Premier League football.

The 21-year-old only had a brief look-in at first-team action in the previous campaign, playing just 31 minutes of football in the top-flight, and predominantly spending his time with the U23s.

But, according to comments previously made by The Athletic’s Phil Hay, Davis does appear to be making waves behind the scenes at Thorp Arch, saying: “He’s very well thought of, is Davis, and he has been since he came, and of the Under-23s, he’s really been as involved as most under Bielsa and has quite often been the go-to player when Bielsa’s needed a left-back.

“The bottom line is that at Leeds, they think an awful lot of Davis, and they think that he’s a bit of a steal for what they paid to sign him from Morecambe.”

While Davis has some work to do in the aerial department, his tenacity and tackling is something which has always stood out about him, with Stewart Drummond, his former academy boss at Morecambe,  saying: “He had similar attributes to what he has now; a great engine, pace, fit, aggressive in the tackle. He had a nice left foot, delivered the ball really well, all the basic attributes you try to find in players at that age.”

Able to play at both left-back and at centre-back, Davis has got the versatility to fill in wherever Bielsa needs him, offering him a dynamic presence down the flank or perhaps someone more “aggressive” in the middle of the defence and someone who is able to play out from the back.

Given how fans naturally want to see their young talents shine, and how some of them responded with excitement when he previously penned a new contract at Elland Road, Leeds supporters would surely be absolutely buzzing to see Davis play a more prominent role in the first-team next season under Bielsa.

And, it would also go a long way to saving the Whites a lot of money in terms of not having to spend a tonne of cash on some big-money signings.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Bielsa’s side have entered into talks with this Premier League star…

White Fern Tiffen gets unexpected chance to play in England

One of the up and comers on the New Zealand women’s cricket scene, Haidee Tiffen, is to play cricket in England over the winter

Lynn McConnell04-May-2001One of the up and comers on the New Zealand women’s cricket scene, Haidee Tiffen, is to play cricket in England over the winter. It has all happened a little quickly for Tiffen who, in her original plans for the winter, was going to be joining CricInfo Women’s World Cup-winning team-mate Paula Flannery coaching cricket at a Swiss finishing school. However, last week Tiffen learned that she couldn’t get a work permit in Switzerland and had to abandon her trip hopes. Flannery was able to get a permit. But the day after receiving that news, Tiffen was called by CLEAR White Ferns coach Mike Shrimpton who asked would she like to play some cricket in England. When she replied she would, he asked, “Can you go next week?”She could and she will leave for Brighton on Wednesday and be playing her first game next Saturday. Not many New Zealand women have played in the England competitions but Tiffen said they are now being encouraged to take up opportunities when they can.Tiffen, an all-rounder, who played some stunning innings in the World Cup, will play and coach for the Brighton club and may also play for Sussex in the Southern League competition. With her attacking strokeplay and consistent medium pace bowling she is developing as a key member of the New Zealand women’s team for the future.England captain Clare Connor plays for the Brighton club.”I’m really looking forward to it. I want to work on my bowling over there. I want to increase my speed and get some more accuracy.”It will be a great opportunity to work on my game and to have a whole season to prepare for the CLEAR White Ferns tour to India which, I think, is going to be from mid-October to mid-November,” she said. The chance is timely for Tiffen who suffered from two burglaries of her Christchurch home within 24 hours recently. She decided to move back home to her parents in Timaru and has been living there.
