Tom Davies could be Everton’s answer to Steven Gerrard, says Adrian Durham

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Adrian Durham has delivered an almighty claim while speaking on talkSPORT, saying that Everton could have their own Steven Gerrard in Tom Davies, should they guide him correctly.

What did he say?

Davies has been one of Everton’s shining lights over this past month, as they moved away from the relegation zone. The Englishman scored the opening goal against Southampton and was handed the Man of the Match award for his performance in midfield.

Compliments don’t come much greater than a comparison with Gerrard and, despite his glory for their city rivals, there is no doubt it’s too soon to speak of the two players in the same breath.

Durham said on talkSPORT drive: “He is Everton’s opportunity to produce their own Steven Gerrard. That’s what he is, he’s that dynamic, going forward he’s been, he’s a leader.

“If Everton gets this right, with Tom Davies, then he could be as good if not better than Steven Gerrard was for Liverpool.

“Since he’s come back there’s been a change in Everton,” Durham added.

“I’m talking about a midfield leader of men, Tom Davies is your chance to do that if you get behind him, if Everton coach him correctly and they guide him along that path.”

An almighty comparison

As of now, there are certainly signs of a leader in Davies. His commanding nature on the pitch and the fact he has captained England at youth level attests to his credentials, as do recent reports from The Athletic which claim he has been a vocal presence in the dressing room amid Everton’s struggle this season.

However, he has a mountain to climb before he can be compared to Gerrard.

The Liverpool legend established himself as one of the best around for over a decade, where he would challenge for league titles and lift the Champions League in 2005.

The midfielder would become the Liverpool captain at just 23, which is just a few months older than Davies is right now. By this point, Gerrard was already established as an England regular and had bagged himself two League Cups and an FA Cup.

Everton’s midfielder has certainly shown leadership qualities, which is just one aspect of the former Liverpool hero’s arsenal.

If he wants to be as good as Gerrard, he needs a lot more to show on the pitch and drive his side to trophies in the coming years.

Spurs need to recall Jack Clarke in January

Tottenham Hotspur loaned Jack Clarke to Leeds United in the summer.

Sources have suggested to Football FanCast that, having agreed a deal to sign the winger, Mauricio Pochettino changed his mind, informing chairman Daniel Levy that he did not see a way to implement Clarke into his first-team squad.

It appears that the same goes for Marcelo Bielsa.

Thus far this season, the 18-year-old has not played a single minute of Championship football.

Instead, he has been limited to two appearances in the Carabao Cup, playing 70 minutes in the 3-0 win over Salford City and then being substituted at half-time during the penalty shootout defeat to Stoke City.

It means that particular avenue of first-team football is now closed off to Clarke, and it feels more like a disastrous move with every passing weekend.

Of course, this is not to say that Clarke was a regular last season; he made 25 appearances in all competitions but just five of those were starts.

It was perhaps presumptuous then, for Spurs to think the teenager would gain even more minutes this time around. Pochettino decided against keeping him, but there may have been League One or League Two clubs who could have taken Clarke on and made him an integral part of their side.

Noel Whelan, the Football Insider pundit who played for Leeds during his career, has claimed that Bielsa and Pochettino are in regular contact over the winger.

He said: “From what I’ve heard about Bielsa, he will be in talks with Pochettino regularly about Clarke.

“Bielsa will be telling him what’s going on in training, Clarke’s attitude, performance and effort, and why he isn’t in the side.

“They know each other well and Pochettino will be getting the full picture of what’s going on.

“Tottenham sent him back to Leeds because they trust Bielsa’s ability to develop young players. Jack Clarke is now third or fourth in the pecking order for the right wing role behind the likes of Pablo Hernandez and Helder Costa.

“Is Jack going to get in ahead of those two? No, he’s not. He’s going to have to bide his time and win the manager over in training.”

Whelan is probably right but the fact that Leeds have two senior wingers ahead of Clarke is a damning indictment of Spurs’ decision to send him back in the first place.

It is all very well thinking that Bielsa will develop him, but surely he has to play to earn his stripes?

One has to believe that Spurs have erred here and if the reports suggesting he has a recall clause turn out to be true, then the Premier League club should be bringing him back as soon as possible before sending him out on loan again in January – this time to a club that will actually afford him minutes on the pitch.

Pellegrini and Mourinho’s feud set to continue as West Ham face Spurs

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Jose Mourinho joining Tottenham Hotspur has been the big talking point of the week and what better time to appoint the Portuguese man than just days before a derby match against West Ham United.

However, the game shouldn’t be seen as a topic of interest purely because of Mourinho’s arrival or even the rivalry between the Hammers and Spurs.

Another layer of intrigue can be added to the weekend context when you consider the feud between Mourinho and West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini.

The pair have faced off 14 times in their careers so far, with Pellegrini coming out on top in four games, Mourinho winning seven and three other matches ending in a draw.

There has been a war of words between them in the past, as The Express quoted Mourinho as saying: “If Madrid were to fire me, I wouldn’t go to Malaga. I’d go to a top-level team in Italy or England.”

He then followed that up when both were in the Premier League by stating: “Because I wouldn’t. Because I’m in a situation where I can choose. Some people can’t choose.”

Pellegrini has also taken a shot at Saturday’s opponent in the past, saying: “I don’t like coaches who are only interested in results. The concepts of spectacle and creativity are fundamental to me.”

There was even a time when he refused to shake the Portuguese tactician’s hand because he “didn’t want to” after Jose Mourinho jumped in the crowd to celebrate a Fernando Torres winner in 2013.

Both managers are in the top 10 in Premier League history for points per game from those who have taken charge of more than 50 matches.

The most recent time the two managers met was at London Stadium last season, when West Ham beat Manchester United 3-1.

West Ham are on a run of 7 games without a victory in all competitions and Spurs are enduring a winless streak of 5 matches in the league, so there is another added incentive for the two managers to outdo each other.

Sunderland XI vs Coventry: 4 players return as Phil Parkinson goes back to basics

Sunderland’s abysmal run of form continued with the FA Cup exit on Tuesday, and Phil Parkinson is quickly losing the confidence and patience of the fans.

Change is needed, whether that is in playing personnel or the approach taken in matches, otherwise the run of not scoring and not picking up wins will in all likelihood continue.

The new boss has seen 11 goals scored in the nine games he’s managed, with the 5-0 win over Tranmere papering over the cracks in that department.

For a manager who was meant to oversee a change in fortunes not only in terms of results but in making Sunderland more exciting to watch, he has failed so far, yet it is likely he will continue to operate with the same style that has let him down previously.

Parkinson has operated with a 4-2-3-1 formation in every league game so far and in those matches in has mostly been the same players on the pitch, with often the only change being who is chosen to play on the wing.

He has mixed things up in recent cup matches though, operating with a 4-3-3 formation against Scunthorpe and a 3-5-2 against Gillingham, but considering that only yielded more failure he will probably return to basics and stick with his stubborn approach.

As a result, here is the predicted Sunderland starting line-up to take on Coventry.

It is understandable if Parkinson chooses the XI above, as on paper the likes of Will Grigg, Aiden McGeady and Duncan Watmore can be matchwinners.

Unfortunately for the Black Cats, they have displayed their best football all too scarcely this season, and against a Coventry side flying high in third place with only 19 league goals conceded, it promises to be another difficult outing.

[ad_pod ]

That is mainly because Grigg has scored just one league goal this term, yet looks set to start once more after Parkinson came out and publicly backed him to start performing.

Such a decision should be questioned if he continues to underperform, though it may not prevent Sunderland from picking up a result as their defence has often looked dependable.

A makeshift backline kept a clean sheet for more than 90 minutes against Gillingham and with Joel Lynch and Jordan Willis returning to the side – as well as George Dobson who will add protection in front – the Black Cats should be difficult to break down.

After all, they have conceded two or more goals just twice under Parkinson, and that foundation could allow his side to sneak victory, especially if they get a moment of magic from the returning Aiden McGeady.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk must punish individual errors

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Sheffield Wednesday sank to a fourth straight game without victory, but it was always going to be a hard task to follow up recent developments off the field.

Even more so when coming up against the league leaders, West Bromwich Albion.

The Owls succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon and, once again, were left rueing a late goal against them as they looked sure to be returning to south Yorkshire with at least a point.

It comes just days after the club were charged by the EFL for financial misconduct with them staring down the barrel of a hefty points deduction at the very least.

[ad_pod ]

In three straight matches now, Wednesday have seen results slip from their grasp, starting with Blackburn Rovers’ come-from-behind victory before Swansea City snagged a point at the death before the international break.

Time and time again, it appears that it is down to individual mistakes. After the game, manager Garry Monk said: “We’ve just got to keep doing what we’re doing and cut out silly mistakes. It’s nothing to do with tactics or anything like that. But, unfortunately, we’re human beings, sometimes we make mistakes.”

But this problem continues to arise as those who make such errors are given the very platform to do it again, and again, and… again.

This is epitomised by goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, whose rush of blood to the head led to him scything down Matheus Pereira inside the penalty area, just weeks after his awful clanger against the Swans.

Liam Palmer also saw red for a reckless yet needless challenge soon after to halt any chance of salvaging a point back in their favour.

The 40-year-old has also added: “We’ve talked about it, we’ve discussed it, we’ve trained it, we’ve shown it, that’s all you can do.”

Watch Sheffield Wednesday Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

However, this is where he is wrong. Monk needs to be gutsy and show some mettle to drop those that have consistently let him down in recent weeks.

Then they will truly know that their place is up for grabs, and they’ll hopefully learn from it, rather than sitting back with the safety net of knowing they’ll be starting the next game regardless of whether they hoof the ball into their own net or not.

Time to be bold, Garry.

In other news… one Wednesday regular shouldn’t face the axe after he ran the show against the league leaders.
