As good as Asensio: Aston Villa ace proved he’s a £39m star in the making

Aston Villa secured passage to the FA Cup quarter-finals with a battling win over Championship strugglers Cardiff City on Friday night.

It wasn’t a vintage performance, but Unai Emery’s side were in control throughout and now step into the last eight of England’s top cup competition for the first time in a decade – and doesn’t Emery just love a knockout-style trophy.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery

The Bluebirds were resilient and thwarted Villa Park’s hosts before the interval, with Ollie Watkins and Marcus Rashford missing great chances to put Villa in front, but it was Marco Asensio once again who came up with the goods to avoid a cup upset and shift one step closer.

Marco Asensio strikes again

Aston Villa welcomed Asensio from Paris Saint-Germain in January, bringing him to England on loan until the end of the term.

After scoring twice during last weekend’s dramatic victory over Chelsea, the 29-year-old was benched at Selhurst Park as Villa were thrashed by Crystal Palace, but he proved his clinical worth once again in the FA Cup.

Sharp positioning and cutting finishing left the second-tier opponents unstuck, thwarting a determined defence and giving Emery something different in attack when Watkins doesn’t have his shooting boots laced.

That’s four goals from six matches for the Spaniard, who’s proving to be a real asset as Aston Villa step into the business end of the season.

However, he wasn’t the only one to shine in the FA Cup, with a much younger teammate showing the signs of becoming a top player.

Emery's new £39m star in the making

Dutch defender Lamare Bogarde has been at Aston Villa since joining the academy from Feyenoord in 2020, with his technical quality and strong defensive skills seeing him become an increasingly familiar face in Emery’s first team.

Cardiff were limited in their attacking play, but he was composed and cultured, very much settled among his more experienced teammates.

Lamare Bogarde in action for Aston Villa

As per Sofascore, the 21-year-old was willing to get on the ball, taking 89 touches, winning three of four contested duels and making three clearances. He was crisp in possession too, completing 96% of his passes (79/82).

Birmingham Live’s John Townley was impressed by the young centre-half as he reprised his starting berth, handing him a 7/10 match rating and praising him for his partnership with Ezri Konsa, chasing back effectively when Cardiff attempted to play in behind the home side’s high line.

Konsa has risen from good to great over the past few years, regarded as a “Rolls-Royce” of a defender by former boss Dean Smith, but since becoming an enviable cog in a rounded and thriving team.

His versatility is one of the things that makes him so impressive, and Bogarde is demonstrating similar positionally flexible virtues, as you can see below.

In fact, Bogarde’s noteworthy ranking among the top 4% of positional peers for pass completion and the top 5% for tackles per 90, as per FBref, has seen him drawn as one of Konsa’s most comparable players right now, among those in Europe’s top five leagues.

According to Football Transfers, the 27-year-old Konsa is valued at £39m, a measure of his progress since signing from Brentford for £12m in 2019.

But in actuality, Aston Villa would be within their rights to field enquiries totalling much more.

In Bogarde, Emery may well have a new young prospect to fashion into a top-class star. He will face tougher tests over the coming months but has come up trumps in recent weeks to help combat injury issues and indeed keep the trophy dream alive.

During the heavy defeat at Selhurst Park, Bogarde still won five of eight duels on the evening, making four clearances and preventing the likes of Ismaila Sarr from dribbling past him even once.

There’s real potential with this one.

Saqib Mahmood will make his return to competitive action on the white-ball leg of England Lions’ tour of Sri Lanka in February, following the stress fracture in his back that ruled him out of the 2022 home international season.Mahmood, 25, impressed on England’s tour of the Caribbean in early 2022, where he made his Test debut and claimed six wickets at 22.83 in his two appearances. However, he has not played since his solitary County Championship fixture for Lancashire against Gloucestershire in May.He was, however, part of the pace bowler rehab programme in the UAE in October, as was his fellow quick, Brydon Carse, who is also included in the white-ball squad after sustaining a toe injury during last summer’s ODI series against South Africa.Yorkshire’s fast bowler Matt Fisher, who made his Test debut alongside Mahmood in Barbados in March, is one of four players named for both the red- and white-ball legs. Somerset’s captain Tom Abell, Lancashire’s left-arm spinner Tom Hartley, and the prolific Essex seamer, Sam Cook, are also included in both 16-man squads. The Test squad includes two other capped players in Alex Lees, who opened alongside Zak Crawley throughout the 2022 home summer but was dropped for the recent tour of Pakistan in favour of Ben Duckett, and Haseeb Hameed, who made a century for the Lions against the senior squad in the UAE in October, having been dropped after the last Ashes tour in 2021-22.With several contenders for England’s squads set to be in action at the SA20 and ILT20 tournaments in the coming months, the 28 players in the Lions party include three members of the Under-19 squad that reached the World Cup final in Antigua last year. Jacob Bethell, Tom Prest and James Rew were all key figures in the team that helped propel Rehan Ahmed towards his memorable Test debut in Karachi last month. Ahmed is not included in the Lions set-up, but two other legspinners feature, in Hampshire’s Mason Crane and the Essex allrounder Matt Critchley.Bethell and Rew are both currently playing grade cricket in Australia, and will rejoin the Under-19s squad for this month’s two Youth Tests in Australia before joining the Lions ODI squad.ECB Performance Director, Mo Bobat, said: “This is a really exciting opportunity to expose players to the challenges of playing A-team cricket in the sub-continent, which will be fantastic for their development.”The series also provides us with the chance to observe the players ahead of this year’s World Cup as well as next winter’s Test series in India.”The squads have been selected with careful consideration of each player’s individual programme. We’ve worked closely with the counties to understand the players’ best interests as we map their development opportunities. In some cases that includes enabling players to play in domestic franchise cricket.”The ODI squad takes into account the strength in depth that we have across a number of key roles in our England Men’s white-ball teams and many of the players will join us directly from cricket they’ve been playing elsewhere, in Australia, South Africa or the UAE.”After a hugely exciting and successful first half of the winter for our Test and Twenty20 teams, I am sure the Lions players will be suitably motivated to make the most of this opportunity.”The red-ball tour will begin with a three-day warm-up match in Colombo on January 25 before two four-day Tests against Sri Lanka A in Galle. The white-ball squad will then play three ODIs against Sri Lanka A in Colombo, with the opening match scheduled for 15 February. The ECB is set to confirm the Head Coach and the captains for each squad before the series, while selection is subject to attainment of England Lions’ minimum fitness standards.Lions Test squad Tom Abell, Josh Bohannon, Jack Carson, Sam Cook, Matt Fisher, Nathan Gilchrist, Tom Haines, Haseeb Hameed, Tom Hartley, Jack Haynes, Lyndon James, Alex Lees, Liam Patterson-White, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith, Josh TongueLions ODI squad Tom Abell, Tom Banton, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Mason Crane, Matt Critchley, Matt Fisher, Sam Hain, Tom Hartley, Tom Lammonby, Saqib Mahmood, Tom Prest, James Rew, Luke Wood.

Arsenal set to make offer to sign 21-goal "superstar" after hiring Berta

Arsenal are set to offer a contract to a “superstar” striker in the next few weeks, by which point they may have formalised the arrival of Andrea Berta as their new sporting director, according to a report.

Gunners closing in on new sporting director

The Gunners have been without a permanent sporting director since the departure of Edu back in November, but Fabrizio Romano has now revealed they have identified a new top target to replace the Brazilian.

Negotiations are said to be at an “advanced” stage, while Gianluca Di Marzio has suggested the deal could be finalised this week, with the north Londoners now inching closer to appointing a successor to Edu.

Sky Sports reporter Sacha Tavolieri has also offered an update on the situation, stating Arsenal are now waiting to formalise Berta’s arrival, and an offer could be made for a new striker not long after the Italian puts pen to paper.

Tavolieri states the Gunners are expected to table a contract offer for Lille’s Jonathan David in the coming weeks, with the striker’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

West Ham United have already made a concrete move for David, tabling a huge contract offer in a bid to tempt him into a move to the London Stadium, but he is believed to be keen on a move to Barcelona instead.

However, Barca are unable to match the Hammers’ approach, given their financial woes, meaning the door could be open for a move to London, where Mikel Arteta’s side may be waiting in the wings.

Arteta must drop Arsenal's "big-game player" to unleash "monstrous" ace

The exceptional midfielder will give Arsenal an edge.

1 ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 4, 2025 "Superstar" David could be an excellent signing

The Gunners’ Premier League title hopes have taken a big hit since Kai Havertz was sidelined, with Mikel Merino getting the nod at the unnatural position of striker, and the Spaniard has failed to score in his last two outings.

As such, signing an out-and-out striker may be a priority for Arteta in the summer, and there are signs David could fit the bill, given his extremely impressive form for Lille this season.

The Canada international has now started to prove himself at the highest level, scoring six goals in eight appearances in the Champions League, and he has already amassed 30 goal contributions in all competitions, bagging 21 goals and nine assists.

A top striker may be the final piece of the jigsaw if Arsenal are to win the Premier League title next season, and there are signs the 25-year-old could now be at that level, having been lauded as a “superstar” by Canada teammate Jonathan Osorio, making this one to watch.

Dasun Shanaka replaces Williamson in Gujarat Titans squad

Sri Lanka’s T20I captain gears up for his maiden IPL stint

Gujarat Titans have brought in Sri Lankan allrounder Dasun Shanaka as a replacement for Kane Williamson, who was ruled out of IPL 2023 after injuring his knee in the opening game of the season against Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad.Shanaka, Sri Lanka’s T20I captain, is a batting allrounder who has played 181 T20s, scoring 3702 runs at a strike rate of 141.94 and taking 59 wickets with an economy rate of 8.8. He had scored 124 runs at a strike rate of 187.87 during Sri Lanka’s three T20Is in India in January this year. This will be his first stint in the IPL.In his debut game for Titans, Williamson landed awkwardly – with his right knee buckling under his weight – while attempting a catch at the deep square leg boundary in the 13th over of CSK’s innings. He had jumped to intercept a ball headed for six off Ruturaj Gaikwad’s bat. Williamson managed to save two runs, palming the ball into the field of play before it bounced onto the boundary boards, but by that point he was on the ground clutching his right knee.Despite receiving treatment for some time, he played no further part in the game. Williamson has since returned to New Zealand for further assessment and treatment for his knee injury.Titans are the defending champions having won the trophy in their maiden season in 2022. They began their title defence with a victory in their opening game against CSK.

Chelsea already signed a bigger star than Quenda in "world-class talent"

Like a thief in the night, Chelsea and Todd Boehly have pounced, with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano announcing in the early hours of Friday morning that the Blues have struck an early deal for the signing of Sporting CP starlet, Geovany Quenda.

That swift capture has, quite literally, come as a bolt from the blue, with it having looked for all the world as if the 17-year-old sensation would be making a move to Manchester United this summer, reuniting with his former boss and compatriot, Ruben Amorim.

Indeed, The Athletic’s David Ornstein had reported during the January transfer window that the Red Devils were targeting a summer swoop for the teenager, with Amorim having handed the youngster his first-team debut earlier this season.

As it is, the versatile winger is set to make the move to Stamford Bridge rather than Old Trafford in 2026, with the west Londoners – who are believed to be forking out as much as €50m (£42m) – set to loan Quenda back to his current side for the 2025/26 campaign.

While the Blues will then have to wait a while to see their new man in action, such a deal represents yet another exciting acquisition in the Boehly era.

Why Chelsea have signed Geovany Quenda

The Portuguese starlet is a winger by trade, although had forced his way into Amorim’s side in a right wing-back berth, showcasing a tactical flexibility that will be invaluable to Enzo Maresca and Co.

Not set to turn 18 until next month, the raw talent appears to have the world at his feet, having already chalked up two goals and eight assists in just 43 appearances for the Lisbon side.

Described as a “highly unpredictable” winger by data analyst Ben Mattinson, the Sporting youth product’s strengths lie in his ball carrying and dribbling prowess, shown by the fact that he ranks among the top 16% of his Champions League peers for progressive carries, as well as in the top 15% for successful take-ons per 90.

Sporting CP's GeovanyQuendain action

While yet to make an appearance, Quenda has already been called up to the senior Portugal side this season, with national team boss Roberto Martinez stating that he has a “quality that is not normal at 17 years old”.

All the signs point to Chelsea having potentially hit the jackpot with such a signing, with the teen wizard set to provide further competition to an attacking department that already boasts Cole Palmer, Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto.

That said, Quenda may not be the biggest star who is set to arrive at Stamford Bridge in the near future, with Boehly having already made a handful of statement long-term signings in the recent past.

Chelsea already have a bigger talent than Quenda

Supporters may cry for further depth and quality in the defensive ranks, not least with first-choice goalkeeper Robert Sanchez having made five errors leading to a goal in the Premier League this season, yet the priority for Boehly appears to be to continue raiding the globe for the best and brightest attacking stars.

In The Pipeline

Indeed, the signing of Quenda has not just come as a surprise due to its timing, with there a question to be asked of whether the club are actually in need of another teenage winger, having already moved to sign Kendry Paez and Estevao Willian.

Estevao, in particular, could represent an even bigger star than the Sporting ace on the flanks, with the 17-year-old Brazilian lauded as a “future Ballon d’Or winner” by Mattinson.

Also hailed as a “world-class talent” by scout Jacek Kulig, the Palmeiras superstar was signed by the Blues back in May 2024 on an initial £29m deal, albeit having had to wait until he turns 18 to move to England ahead of next season.

A dazzling left-footer, in a similar mould to Quenda, the young diamond has already scored 20 goals and provided ten assists in just 58 first-team games for his current side, making the transition to life at senior level with ease.

Already in 2025, Estevao has scored five goals from just 12 league games, while creating two big chances and averaging 2.1 key passes per game, as per Sofascore.

Quenda, for instance, has one goal and four assists in the league in 2024/25, while creating nine big chances and averaging just 1.9 key passes per game, albeit having played 25 times.

As evidenced by the table above, it is Estevao who comes out on top across a string of attacking metrics across the last 365 days, with excitement brewing over finally seeing him in action when next season rolls around.

As such, with Maresca already boasting a string of right-sided forwards in the form of Madueke, Neto and Palmer – and with Paez and Estevao soon to join the mix – the decision to also fork out for Quenda could be seen as overdoing it, with investment needed elsewhere in the squad.

On the flip side, having such an array of attacking stars to call upon truly is exciting, with the question now as to whether this youth-centric transfer approach will yield tangible success on the pitch.
