Riding on captain Qasim Akram’s all-round heroics, Pakistan thrashed Sri Lanka by 238 runs to win fifth place at the Under-19 World Cup. The 19-year old became the first player in the 45-year history of Youth ODIs to hit a century and pick up a five-wicket haul in the same gamePakistan posted a massive 365 for 3, courtesy Qasim’s 80-ball 135, opener Haseebullah Khan’s 151-ball 136 and Muhammad Shehzad’s 69-ball 73.Coming in at No. 3, the captain shared a 229-run stand with Haseebullah after the 134-run opening stand was broken by Raveen de Silva. With his offspin, Qasim (5 for 37) broke through the Sri Lanka line-up to leave them reeling at 41 for 5 and they never recovered. Sri Lanka were eventually bowled out for 127 with No. 9 Vinuja Ranpul top-scoring with an unbeaten 53 off 58 balls.Qasim’s talent is well known in Pakistan circles. The teenager generated a lot of interest among not one but two champion teams at the PSL. Islamabad United had him on their wish list but in the end, he went to Karachi Kings, where he will be joining the senior national captain Babar Azam.Dewald Brevis has had a stunning Under-19 World Cup•ICC via Getty
Brevis ton powers SA to win In the other match of the day, Dewald Brevis continued his fine form to help South Africa chase down Bangladesh’s 293 for 8 with two wickets in hand in the seventh-place Playoff in Coolidge. With a tally of 506 in six matches, Brevis now holds the record for most runs scored in an Under-19 World Cup, overtaking India’s Shikhar Dhawan. His 130-ball 138 was instrumental in South Africa pulling off the second-highest chase in Youth World Cup history. The innings consisted of 11 fours and seven sixes. South Africa still needed a little help from somewhere else to get across the line and that came from Matthew Boast as he hit 41 off 22 to seal a narrow win.Meanwhile, batting first, Ariful Islam notched up his second straight ton for Bangladesh, scoring an almost run-a-ball 102 to propel Bangladesh to a competitive total. As was the case in their last match too, Ariful’s ton went in vain. For South Africa, left-arm pacer Kwena Maphaka took 3 for 55 while left-arm spinner Liam Alder took 2 for 46.
Ferenc Puskas is famed for being one of football’s greatest-ever goalscorers.
During his glistening career, the Hungarian legend scored 725 goals, including 242 in just 262 games for Real Madrid between 1958 and 1966.
So good was he at finding the net, that in 2009, he had an award named after him: The FIFA Puskas Award. Each year, the award is given to the player who is judged by fans across the world to have scored the “most beautiful” goal of the year.
Previous winners include Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Here, we’ve ranked all 11 of this year’s nominees.

11 Jaden Philogene Rotherham United v Hull City
On paper, Jaden Philogene’s goal against Rotherham United for Hull City in February has all the makings of a Puskas Award winner. Nutmeg? Check. Cruyff turn to plant a defender on his backside? Check. Rabona into the top corner? Check.
There are two big problems. The first is that he clearly didn’t mean it. It was an attempted cross which he slipped trying to execute. The second is that regardless of whether it was shot or a cross (it was a cross), Rotherham keeper Viktor Johansson should have dealt with it comfortably. Instead, he flapped at it like a seal trying to catch fish at the zoo, making it comfortably last place on this list.
10 Federico Dimarco Inter v Frosinone
While best known for his defensive abilities, Inter’s Federico Dimarco is no stranger to a goal, having scored six in each of the last two seasons.
The best of those strikes came against Frosinone last November when he lobbed the ball over Canaries ‘keeper Stefano Turati from just inside the opposition half.
The Italian media claimed Dimarco found his mark “like Christopher Columbus” but, like Philogene’s goal, we’re not convinced he meant it.
9 Paul Onuachu Trabzonspor v Konyaspor
Southampton flop Paul Onuachu took a leaf straight out of the books of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Erling Haaland with his karate-kick goal against Konyaspor while on loan at Trabzonspor last year.
With the scores level at 1-1 in the 85th minute, Enis Destan dug out a cross from the left-hand side of Konyaspor’s box, which Onuachu slammed into the back of the net with a flying back heel.
The Nigerian, who is 6 foot 7, then celebrated the goal with an equally acrobatic backflip. Saints fans will be wondering where this version of Onuachu has been hiding at St. Mary’s.
8 Terry Antonis Melbourne City v Western Sydney Wanderers
Goals from the centre circle are always good. Goals from the centre circle where the player tees themselves up by lobbing the ball over an opposition player before volleying it in from range are even better,
That is exactly what Melbourne City’s Terry Antonis did against Western Sydney Wanderers in March. Even sweeter than the goal itself for Antonis was the fact it was scored against the club that had frozen him out and terminated his contract a year prior.
7 Hassan Al Haydos Qatar v China PR
Qatar’s Hassan Al Haydos could not have hit his volley against China in the Asian Cup back in January any sweeter.
Scored following a corner set-piece routine, the fact that it was planned on the training pitch and executed so perfectly makes it even more impressive, especially given the enormity of the occasion. Paul Scholes would be proud.
Ranking the 10 best goals not to win the Puskas Award
Here are Football FanCast’s top ten Puskas-nominated goals to miss out on the award.
ByJack Salveson Holmes Oct 1, 2023 6 Mohammed Kudus West Ham United v Freiburg
Mohammed Kudus’ goal for West Ham United against Freiburg in the Europa League back in March is an entirely different beast than the rest of the goals on this list.
Rather than a long-range strike or an acrobatic volley, Kudus earned his Puskas nomination with a superlative solo effort that saw him pick the ball up deep in his own half, scorch past half the Freiburg team and slot the ball into the bottom corner. Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi, eat your hearts out.
5 Michaell Chirinos Costa Rica v Honduras
It’s difficult to pinpoint which was the best bit of Michaell Chirinos’ goal for Honduras against Costa Rica in March.
Was it Edwin Rodriguez’s superb solo run, piece of skill, and pass to striker Jerry Bengtson? Was it Bengtson’s subsequent back-heeled volley to Chirinos? Or was it Chirinos’ thumping volley into the bottom corner from the edge of the box? It was all pretty good, to be honest.
4 Walter Bou Lanus v Tigre
August’s meeting between Lanus and Tigre in the Argentinian top flight looked set for a draw, with the sides level at two goals apiece and the clock ticking into added time.
Walter Bou, however, had other ideas. After using his chest to control a hopeful ball forward on the edge of Tigre’s box, the striker looped a stunning scissor-kick over the goalkeeper, handing his side all three points and sending the home crowd at the Estadio Ciudad de Lanus into hysterics.
3 Alejandro Garnacho Everton v Manchester United
Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho stunned the home crowd at Goodison Park (and everyone who was watching at home) into silence with his stunning overhead kick against Everton last November.
Almost eerily similar to United legend Wayne Rooney’s goal against Manchester City in 2011, even the Argentinian himself was shocked by the goal.
“I can’t believe it, to be honest,” he said afterwards. “I didn’t see how I scored, I just listened to the crowd and said, ‘Oh my God.'”
2 Denis Omedi KCCA v Kitara
If you’re anything like us, you probably don’t get to watch much Ugandan football.
However, if Denis Omedi’s strike against KCCA in the country’s Super 8 tournament in August is anything to go by, we are clearly all missing out.
After latching on to a lofted ball forward, the Kitara forward skinned a defender with a Cruyff turn before taking aim with an improbable rabona from the edge of the box which floated into the top corner.
Sevilla’s Erik Lamela won the Puskas Award with a rabona in 2021, but we think Omedi’s is better.

Pakistan have been dealt another blow ahead of the first Test against Australia with Haris Rauf testing positive for Covid-19. As a result, he has been ruled out of the first Test in Rawalpindi, which begins on Friday.Naseem Shah, who was originally a travelling reserve, has replaced him in the squad for the series opener.Rauf is yet to play a Test for Pakistan but was in the running for selection after the withdrawals of Hasan Ali and Faheem Ashraf with injuries picked up in the PSL last week.Pakistan called up Iftikhar Ahmed and Mohammad Wasim Jr to replace those two, but they may be compelled to give a chance to Naseem.Rauf had cleared a Covid test on arrival in Islamabad on Monday afternoon but he tested positive from a Rapid Antigen Test on Tuesday. Following Rauf’s positive test, the rest of the squad and support personnel were tested again. All these tests have come out negative.Rauf will remain in isolation for five days and will re-join the squad once he returns a negative test at the end of his isolation period.Rauf had helped Lahore Qalandars win the PSL final on Sunday evening, which is why he joined the squad on Monday. He arrived with Shaheen Shah Afridi, Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan, who all took part in the final. Fawad Ahmed, the Australian legspinner, who was part of the Qalandars squad and is due to work with Australia as their spin consultant, was also part of the flight. The three-Test series is the first Australia will play in Pakistan since 1998.Squad for first Test: Babar Azam (capt), Mohammad Rizwan (vice-capt), Abdullah Shafique, Azhar Ali, Fawad Alam, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Naseem Shah, Nauman Ali, Sajid Khan, Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shan Masood, Zahid Mahmood

Chegou a virar titular.

They say a week is a long time in football, and in Tottenham Hotspur’s case, a fortnight is a lifetime.
It was almost two weeks ago that Ange Postecoglou’s side were wiping the floor with Premier League Champions Manchester City at the Etihad, and at full-time, there was an expectation that the North Londoners would then go on a run.
However, in the three games since, the Lilywhites have drawn at home with AS Roma and Fulham and lost away to Bournemouth, which makes the prospect of facing Chelsea and the sensational Cole Palmer tomorrow afternoon all the more terrifying.
What makes it worse is that a player Postecoglou sold in the summer is now playing out of his skin and could well have been Spurs’ own Palmer.
Spurs' summer sales
So, before we get to the player in question, let’s look at how some of Spurs’ other departures are getting on this season, starting with someone who’s not having a great time: Emerson Royal.
The Brazilian full-back joined Serie A giants AC Milan for around £13m, which Italian football writer Kaustubh Pandey described as “a deal for the ages,” although not for the right reasons.
In all, the 25-year-old has made 16 appearances for the Rossoneri so far, in which he’s failed to score or assist a goal and been so poor that Italian football expert James Horncastle described the fee paid as a charitable ‘donation’ ‘to make his wish to become a footballer come true’ – ouch.
Someone faring a little better away from North London is centre-back Joe Rodon, who joined Leeds United for around £10m at the same time as Archie Gray went the other way.
So far, the 47-capped Welshman has made 19 appearances for the Peacocks, who currently sit third in the Championship, just a point off of second place and three off of first.
However, while the 27-year-old defender is doing well in West Yorkshire, another former Lilywhites ace is doing even better and is showing that he could have been Postecoglou’s own Palmer.
The former Spurs ace playing like Palmer
So, to get straight to the point, the former Spurs ace in question is midfield marvel Giovani Lo Celso.
Yes, the Argentine international, who finally departed N17 for good this summer to join La Liga side Real Betis for £8.4m, has been in utterly sensational form and is beginning to play like Palmer.
Now, we say this for a couple of reasons. The first is that, like the Chelsea star, the “unbelievable” 28-year-old, as dubbed by journalist Alex Mitton, has become an increasingly important goal threat for his team this season and has already racked up six in just 11 appearances while also providing an assist for good measure.
However, the other reason is that, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and Europa League, the Englishman is statistically the fourth most similar attacking midfielder or winger to the Argentine this season.
We can better understand how they reached this conclusion by examining the underlying numbers in which they rank closely, metrics including but not limited to expected assists, non-penalty goals, shots on target, key passing and goal-creating actions, all per 90.

Ultimately, while the club couldn’t have foreseen such an uptick in form, it certainly feels like they could do with someone like Lo Celso in the squad right about now, and the fact he is performing similarly to Palmer at the moment is just further evidence of his incredible talent.

Jaffer: Pant scares the spinners when he bats
It was so one-sided that there was talk of a third-innings declaration in the fifth session of the match. Jasprit Bumrah completed his first five-for at home, Rishabh Pant casually knocked off the fastest Test fifty by an Indian, and Shreyas Iyer scored his second half-century of the match to bury Sri Lanka under a mountainous deficit.Five-and-a-half hours of Sri Lanka’s bowling – improved but still lacking the control needed to exploit helpful conditions – were bookended by incisive half-hour spells of Indian bowling, which brought them five wickets. The first half hour took care of the four remaining Sri Lankan first-innings wickets; the last, under lights with a new pink ball, accounted for Lahiru Thirimanne in the second innings.Sri Lanka must have started the day hoping to keep India out in the middle for some time, but they didn’t even last six overs. It was long enough for Bumrah to complete a five-wicket haul in a fifth different country. He preyed on the short-ball weakness of Lasith Embuldeniya before following Niroshan Dickwella with a short ball that took his glove. At the other end, R Ashwin took out two wickets with carrom balls.Asked to bat for 35 minutes before stumps, Sri Lanka faced the wrath of Bumrah again. Thirimanne, who fell to his awayswinger in the first innings, got a full, fast inswinger this time, three ball into the innings. They have lost 31 wickets in 167.5 overs in this series, but Sri Lanka’s batting has been made to look much worse than it is by India’s bowlers; their five-man attack for this Test match has 1051 wickets at a combined average of 24.13. Give them conditions where the ball is seaming and swinging in the evening session, and turning and going up and down in the afternoon, and it’s your worst nightmare. All you can hope for is for your bowlers to give you half a chance, but Sri Lanka’s bowlers continued to waste the conditions. They continued to either overpitch or let the batters play risk-free shots off the back foot. So while there were unplayable deliveries every now and then, Karunaratne couldn’t afford too many catching men.India’s batters did their bit with a positive approach. Rohit Sharma’s counter to the conditions was the reverse-sweep to go with the sweep. He played three reverse-sweeps in this innings of 46; in the rest of his international career, he has played only seven. Hanuma Vihari was quick with his footwork in his second score in the 30s: he would press right forward, but drop back the moment the ball was even a touch short. Iyer did the same but with the added gift of boundary-hitting at will.Jasprit Bumrah followed up a first-innings five-for with the early second-innings wicket of Lahiru Thirimanne•Associated Press
And then there was Pant, who took India’s attacking approach to its extreme. The fear he strikes in the hearts of bowlers and captains showed in how he walked out to a deep square leg, a deep midwicket and a long-on on pitch. He didn’t care, though. The second ball he faced, he jumped out of the crease and launched Praveen Jayawickrama over deep midwicket. It didn’t matter that Jayawickrama was in the middle of an improved display despite an injured knee. It was he who bowled the shooter to get Virat Kohli out this time. Pant was not going to wait for any such misbehaviour. Do unto others before they do unto you. Dhananjaya de Silva takes the ball away from the left-hander, but Pant still hit him for a four and a six to reach 20 off seven. The sixes took him to No. 8 on the six-hitters’ list for India. There was nothing frenetic about the Pant innings. A reverse-sweep here, a lap sweep there; a bowling error now, a charge to a seam bowler then. The fifty came up with a pristine cover drive all along the floor against the turn just as Jayawickrama pitched too close to him. It was the 28th ball he faced, two fewer than Kapil Dev took in setting the previous India record. When he tried to celebrate it with a six and ended up skying one, Pant left India with a lead 327 just before the dinner break. A declaration at that point was not entirely out of question, especially knowing that the night session brought the Indian quicks into play on the first evening too. However, India decided to bat on. Iyer used the time to once again ease his way to within striking distance of a century, a landmark he missed in the first innings as he ran out of partners. Once Iyer got out lbw to one that didn’t turn as much as expected, India let Mohammed Shami have some fun with the bat before putting Sri Lanka in again.Following that Bumrah strike in the first over, Ashwin nearly had Kusal Mendis with the last ball of the day, but the bat-pad just lobbed wide of short leg. Just one final reminder of what awaits the batters on the third afternoon.

Birmingham City won’t be fools heading into the hectic December fixture schedule that awaits them, knowing full well that these games will be crucial when it comes to achieving promotion.
They have shown that they are prone to a slip-up here and there too, with the 3-2 away loss to Shrewsbury Town towards the back-end of November damaging their ego somewhat, considering the Shrews are deep in a relegation battle at the opposite end of League One.
But, Chris Davies will believe that his troops are made of some stern stuff and will soar to promotion as 2025 looms on the horizon, with many individuals deserving of praise in his talented camp.
Birmingham's standout performers this season
Birmingham have managed to bounce back from that disappointing defeat to Gareth Ainsworth’s men well with victories galore in December.
Jay Stansfield stood out unsurprisingly in Birmingham’s last away win at Barnsley, as the former Fulham gem picked up another two league strikes to guide his side to a hard-fought three points in South Yorkshire. Then also scoring in the 2-0 win over Bristol Rovers on Saturday, this took his own league goal haul to a mightily impressive ten.
The attackers at Davies’ disposal aren’t the only stars worthy of being mentioned in a glowing fashion, however, as the defenders have also had to dig deep to ensure the Blues continue to pick up win after win.
A recent 2-0 win over a tricky Stockport County side saw Krystian Bielik show off his prowess in the air with eight duels successfully won, as a clean sheet came his team’s way alongside the three points.
Birmingham City loan midfielderKrystian Bielik.
Moreover, the calm and composed presences of Tomoki Iwata and Paik Seung-Ho in the middle of the park have ensured Birmingham also don’t lose their heads when games have been stressful, with the South Korean particularly impressive against the Tykes when assisting Stansfield’s crucial winning goal.

But, there is a former Blues man that is currently outperforming the level-headed number 13 in midfield out in the Netherlands, having never managed to settle at St. Andrew’s over a brief stint.
Halilovic's record since leaving Birmingham
Once hailed as being a “true natural talent” by Dutch great Rafael Van De Vaart, it’s fair to say Alen Halilovic’s career didn’t quite go to plan after his early footballing education at Barcelona.
The forgotten Croat would only make one first team appearance at Camp Nou before going on to become a nomad away from Spain, which even led him down the path of joining Birmingham City in a surprise deal back in 2020.
The dimunitive attacking midfielder would succeed in flashes in his new location, with 17 first team appearances coming his way, which even saw him net one goal versus Queens Park Rangers.
But, it would be a short stay for Halilovic at St. Andrew’s, with the ten-time senior Croatia international exiting the Blues at the close of the 2020/21 season, having failed to agree a new extended deal.

Whilst his temporary time in England wasn’t the most memorable patch of his up-and-down playing days, Halilovic has managed to make a name for himself playing for Fortuna Sittard this season to date, with two assists coming his way recently in Eredivisie action.
That has taken his league total – in terms of goals and assists – to two goals and three assists, which surprisingly betters Paik’s own haul in League One of just two assists with zero goals notched up.
Those numbers are somewhat skewed by the fact that Halilovic does operate as a midfielder far more content with joining in with attacks, but Birmingham would not say no to having their former man back if an opportunity presented itself.
The “phenomenal” star – as he was once described by ex-footballer Miroslav Bicanic – would be another flashy option at Davies’ disposal, but with the Fortuna Sittard ace out of the picture, the Birmingham boss will continue to attempt to steer his star-studded squad to an immediate return to the Championship.
