Michael Neser, who will be in the frame for the Test squad, limped out of the Queensland attack

Usman Khawaja made his strongest case yet for a Test recall as he dominated a paltry Queensland batting effort with a masterly 70 in demanding conditions at the Gabba.Western Australia ended the opening day firmly in control with Cameron Green playing equally as well as Khawaja, but Queensland would have been in an even deeper hole without their captain who helped haul them from the depths of 7 for 56 having been inserted on a green pitch.Other Test match strands played out with Jhye Richardson impressing as he claimed 3 for 38 but Michael Neser sent a scare into Australia’s plans when he limped off midway through his ninth over having injured his hamstring.Neser was one of three injuries during the day with Joel Paris also suffering a hamstring strain having done the early damage to Queensland with two wickets in two balls including Marnus Labuschage first ball.Shaun Marsh was later forced to retire hurt with a calf injury early in Western Australia’s reply but having slipped for 2 for 18, Green and Josh Philippe produced the most confident partnership of the day to stitch together an unbroken 90 through to stumps.Seven of Queensland’s top eight had fallen in single figures as they were undone by an accurate pace attack that exploited conditions well. Paris had Bryce Street playing on trying to leave then Labuschagne pushed forward the first ball to edge behind.Joe Burns played a poor stroke, miscuing a pull to mid-on, while both Matt Renshaw and Jimmy Peirson edged to the keeper off Lance Morris – the latter falling to a terrific catch in front of first slip.Cameron Bancroft also did very well to hold an edge off Jack Wildermuth as the third slip came across in front of him and when Neser’s wild slash gave Richardson his third three figures looked unlikely for Queensland. But Khawaja, who has scored two centuries this season, took charge in what was a strong riposte to Ian Chappell questioning his credentials. In all, he struck 11 boundaries before picking out a long leg searching for another. The last three wickets helped him add 73.That looked significant when Neser struck the first ball to remove Bancroft and when Gurinder Sandhu produced a good delivery to claim debutant Jayden Goodwin, the son of Murray, the game felt wide open with Marsh also back in the dressing room. However, Green and Philippe were excellent for the rest of the day. Green’s footwork was compact and confident while Philippe was composed against some testing bowling although Queensland lost a little control late in the day which ended with Labuschagne bowling medium pace in Neser’s absence.

Ipswich Town have experienced a stratospheric rise up the English Football Pyramid over the last couple of years.
Kieran McKenna has led the Tractor Boys from the depths of League One to the heady heights of the Premier League and has done so without spending an extraordinary sum of money.
Now, the club have still spent their fair share of cash, but it hasn’t been crazy, and up until this summer, they made good use of the loan system.
In fact, a good number of established players across Europe have spent time on loan at Portman Road, including one international who is now playing in the Champions League.
Ipswich's mixed loans
So, before we get to the player in question, let’s look at two youngsters who fared very differently during their time on loan at Portman Road, starting with Omari Hutchinson.
Of course, arguably one of the best loan signings in recent history was Hutchinson’s move to the Blues from Chelsea last season, as, despite being just 19 years old at the time, the incredibly talented gem made a significant contribution to the club’s eventual promotion.
In his 50 appearances for McKenna’s side, the Redhill-born ace scored 11 goals and provided six assists, which was enough to win the club’s Young Player of the Season Award and earn himself a £20m move in the summer.
However, not every temporary switch ends up going as well, and in the same summer that the former Chelsea ace arrived in Suffolk, another young attacker arrived from Tottenham Hotspur: Dane Scarlett.
The striker arrived at the end of August but was back in North London by the end of December, and while it was supposedly down to the Lilywhites’ lack of depth at the time, it was also undoubtedly due to the Englishman’s lack of impact and game time in the Championship.
For example, in his four months at the club, the 20-year-old played just 146 minutes of action across 12 appearances and failed to score a goal or provide a single assist. However, go back five years, and another Spurs youngster joined the club on a short-term loan, a player who has since seen his valuation and career take off.
Cameron Carter-Vickers valuation in 2024
The player in question is American international Cameron Carter-Vickers, who joined Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town on a short-term loan from Spurs in January 2018.
The Southend-born centre-back might not have been quite as game-changing for the Tractor Boys as Hutchinson was last season, but he did enjoy a successful stint in Suffolk, making 17 appearances for the side and winning the club’s Player of the Month Award in his first month.
The following years would see the 26-year-old spend time on loan with Swansea, Stoke City, Luton Town, Bournemouth and Celtic before officially joining the Scottish giants for around £6m in June 2022, where he has remained since.

The 18-capped international has been brilliant for the Hoops, making 123 appearances for them since his initial loan spell, in which he has scored six goals, provided two assists, worn the captain’s armband at times and won three league titles, two League Cups and two Scottish Cups.
Moreover, the “outstanding” ace, as former manager Ange Postecoglou dubbed him, now has nine Champions League appearances to his name and has seen his valuation reach €14m per Transfermarkt, which is about £11.6m, or a whopping 1297% increase on his £830k valuation at Portman Road.

Ultimately, Ipswich have welcomed plenty of extremely talented players on loan over the years, but few players have gone on to be as successful as Carter Vickers has been with Celtic.
McKenna could be brewing his own Alexander-Arnold in Ipswich's "animal"
The special talent could help Ipswich stay up this season.
One thing that has been a clear focus for Chelsea since Todd Boehly bought the club in 2022 was to build a strong core of young players. Granted, this has not been a cheap process, but there is no doubt the Blues have a good group of youngsters with whom they can build towards the future.
Of course, there are several of these players who are already making waves in the first team with Enzo Maresca. The likes of Enzo Fernandez and Nicolas Jackson spring to mind, both of whom are just 23 years of age. Cole Palmer is younger, only 22, and Romeo Lavia is 20 years old.
Cole Palmer for Chelsea
With such stiff competition for places, it does leave some of the younger players on the fringe of the squad with fewer chances to impress.
However, several of the Blues’ younger stars have picked up minutes on international duty this week.
Chelsea’s young international stars
There have been five prominent players at Stamford Bridge who have been playing age-group football for their countries during the November international break. Goalkeeper Lucas Bergstrom is one player away on international duty. The Finland youth international helped his side to a 5-1 thrashing over Norway, conceding a goal in the 42nd minute.
Marc Guiu is another young player away with his national team’s age group side. The striker, who joined the Blues from Barcelona in the summer, plays for Spain’s under-19 side but did not get on the scoresheet in a 3-0 win over the Faroe Islands under-19s. He recently scored his first goal for Chelsea in the Europa Conference League against FC Noah.
Frustratingly, one player pushing for a starting berth at Stamford Bridge, Filip Jorgensen, had to pull out of national team duty with injury. Since joining from Villarreal last season, the goalkeeper has played seven times for the Blues and could have had a chance to further stake his claim with Denmark under-21s this week had it not been for a fitness issue.
Malo Gusto, who has played 11 games for the Blues this season in captain Reece James’ absence, should also have played age-group football this week, for France under-21s. Sadly, like Jorgensen, the right-back also missed the November camp due to injury.
Malo Gusto in action for Chelsea
Interestingly, Gusto could have played against a Chelsea teammate had he stayed with the squad, Italy under-21 midfielder Cesare Casadei.
Casadei’s time with Italy under-21s
Talented Italian midfielder Casadei has had a tough time of things at Stamford Bridge. He initially joined the club in 2022 from Inter and cost £12.6m up front with a further £4.2m in add-ons.
Cesare Casadei
He has so far played just 15 times for the club, having been out on loan at Reading in his first season and Leicester City last term, before being recalled in January. The midfielder played under Maresca at the King Power Stadium, so it may be surprising that he has featured just four times under him this season.
He certainly impressed for Italy under-21s this week, against Gusto’s nation of France. The former Inter academy starlet got himself on the scoresheet from midfield but was superb outside of that. The 6 foot 1 midfielder also won nine duels and created one chance, as per Sofascore.

It might well be frustrating for the youngster that he has not quite had an opportunity under Maresca yet. Football analyst Ben Mattinson described him as a “game changer”, praising his ability to arrive into the box and get on the end of crosses.

With the Blues fighting on all fronts in three competitions, including the FA Cup which is yet to get started for them, there are plenty of opportunities for Casadei to stake a claim for a more permanent role in the Stamford Bridge midfield.
His performance against France will only have worked in his favour, and Casadei will no doubt be hoping to kick on from here. As Mattinson stated, he could well be a ‘game changer’ for the Blues in the near future.

Justin Langer confident in Australia’s fast-bowling depth if reinforcements are needed
Andrew McGlashan04-Dec-2021Cameron Green’s role with the ball shapes a crucial part of Australia’s Ashes plans both in terms of the workload of captain Pat Cummins and whether rotation of the other quicks will be needed during the series. It is, though, unlikely that Australia will field the same fast-bowling trio through all five Tests meaning that Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc could be in line for a break during the series.Last season, it was felt that the quicks had run out of steam by the final match against India although the first two games had been over in less than three and four days respectively.Cummins’ position, as a rare fast-bowling captain, will be in the spotlight but he has shown remarkable durability since returning to Test cricket in 2017 and has missed just two matches.Related

Marnus Labuschagne eager for James Anderson duel with 'target on the back'
Squad vs Squad: how do Australia and England stack up?
Green was wicketless in his debut series against India last season while sending down 44 overs and his bowling numbers have blown out since having stress fractures of the back. However, even if he is not striking regularly, the ability to bowl 12-15 overs a day and not let the run rate get away will be vital – Green conceded 2.68 runs per over against India – while Marnus Labuschagne could also have a part to play.”[Cummins] will be fine strategically, it will just be maintaining the balance of everything else that goes with his bowling load and then captaining and all the other commitments that come with it. So we’ll keep an eye on that,” Justin Langer said. “Cameron Green is going to be important there with his extra bowling that he can give. Marnus bowling some as well.”Cameron Green is waiting for his first Test wicket•Getty Images
Cummins has acknowledged that knowing when not to bowl himself, or to end a spell, could be among his tougher decisions. “I think that’s going to be one of the main things that I have to be aware of,” he said. “There’s a lot of experience in the side. Sometimes I might need to listen to what they’ve got to say more than what I’ve got to say myself.”Langer, who said he knew the XI for the Gabba but would keep it under wraps, did not commit to the need to rotate the quick bowlers outside of injury problems but was confident in the depth in the squad. Jhye Richardson has been in impressive form this season for Western Australia with 23 wickets at 13.43 while Michael Neser is on track after a hamstring injury. Sean Abbott and Mark Steketee are also part of the Australia A squad.”Last year there was a lot of discussion at the end of the India series,” Langer said. “We had some criticism that we used the same bowlers, but you can turn that on its head and say it’s actually a real credit to the bowlers who are so fit and the support staff that guys can get through four Tests and not break down. We’ll work through it. What I do know is we have a lot of talent and we keep seeing that.”Jhye Richardson is in great nick, he’s bowled beautifully in Shield cricket. Michael Neser is coming back from his hamstring and he’s one of the heartbeats of the team.”Asked whether Labuschagne’s medium pace, which has become more frequent in domestic cricket, could make an appearance, Langer said: “I’m very happy to see him bowl legspin at the moment…you never know, Matthew Wade bowled a few overs of seam up, but I like to see his leggies.”

Chelsea have been a day late and a dollar short in recent years, but American owners BlueCo are starting to find success at Stamford Bridge.
Ditching Mauricio Pochettino for ‘project manager’ Enzo Maresca has proved to be an excellent move, with Pep Guardiola’s protege bringing a sharp injection of technical and possession-based quality to the outfit.
Third in the Premier League and cruising in the Conference League, the Blues have much to look forward to in 2025, with the summer transfer window proving to be a success.
Chelsea's summer transfer window
In August 2023, Chelsea signed Cole Palmer from Manchester for a £42.5m fee. This, truly, might be one of the best signings that the club have made in several decades, with Sky Sports’ Jamie Carragher pronouncing the 22-year-old as “the best player in the Premier League right now” in October.
Cole Palmer for Chelsea
This year, however, Chelsea have enjoyed more success in the market, welcoming several impactful stars to complement Palmer, who was somewhat isolated in his brilliance under Pochettino.
Jadon Sancho, Pedro Neto and Joao Felix have all been added to the cause this summer, strengthening a frontline that is now among the most formidable in English football.
A host of younger players have been signed too. Chelsea operate prudently, looking to bolster every level with top talent to perpetuate prominence.
However, the club’s ambitions sometimes stray into the realm of unnecessary. To be clear, the noise around Chelsea’s spending this summer was ridiculous, for there were plenty of outgoings to mitigate the high-priced spending. By the end of the window, Chelsea’s net spend was only around £50m. However, Manchester United’s, for example, stood at a towering £94m.
Even so, some deals just shouldn’t have happened.
Chalkboard
Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.
Chelsea's most "pointless" transfer
Chelsea hijacked Brighton & Hove Albion’s deal for a certain Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in July, completing a £30m move on a six-year contract that, as yet, has been rather fruitless, with the industrious midfielder restricted to a limited role in the squad.
The 26-year-old has only made three second-half appearances in the Premier League for Chelsea, though, compounding that lack of opportunity, hasn’t even been granted a place in the matchday squad across five of the past six fixtures.
Dewsbury-Hall
He’s impressed in the Conference League, to be fair, though he’s only started two of Chelsea’s three matches, and, frankly, hasn’t exactly been pitted against the highest calibre of opposition.
As journalist Zach Lowy aptly puts it below, the Chelsea midfielder is stuck on the margins of Maresca’s squad, and though it’s good for the Londoners to have the depth, one can’t help but question the decision to reject Brighton, where he could have become a superstar, in place of a high-class Chelsea team with some brilliant midfielders.
This is a shame, especially since the ace, whose salary is reported to total at a reasonable £80k per week, was considered to be Chelsea’s next version of N’Golo Kante.
In 2015/16, Leicester defied every realm of possibility to conquer the Premier League and create one of the greatest stories in the history of sport. Kante was the veritable lifeblood of the Foxes’ success, and Dewsbury-Hall played his part too, with the youth cleaning the France international’s boots.
Kante then transferred to Chelsea in a deal worth £32m (a similar fee to Dewsbury-Hall’s, by the way), and went on to win the English top flight again and the Champions League too.
Lauded for his “incredible quality” by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, Kante is one of Chelsea’s most remarkable players of the 21st century, and so perhaps it’s inevitable that Dewsbury-Hall would look up to the star, following in his footsteps as he did this summer by joining from the Foxes.
Dewsbury-Hall’s a talented midfielder, sure, but he’s not endowed with quite the same awe-inspiring brilliance as the French legend, and so perhaps made the wrong turn when arriving at that critical juncture this summer.
The Daily Briefing have recently revealed that Dewsbury-Hall is attracting interest from Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur and that Chelsea would be willing to consider his loan exit this coming winter.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall for Chelsea
A player should always aim big and back themselves, but a touch of realism can propel an aspiring star quite a distance, and with Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo serving at the centre, Enzo Fernandez too, was the one-time Leicester sensation ever going to knock himself into a prominent starting role with the regularity that fits a player of his skill?
Moreover, his very presence in Maresca’s squad might have inflicted detrimental damage on Carney Chukwuemeka’s hopes of succeeding at the club, for the 21-year-old talent has not featured this season and is beginning to attract interest from suitors such as Ipswich Town.
Look, no one of a Chelsea persuasion wants to see Dewsbury-Hall fail, not least after he cost £30m to bring in from Leicester. However, you have to be realistic about some things, and it’s not looking likely that he is going to stake his claim to a prominent role, not with such fierce and highly talented competition.
Perhaps he was envisaged as the next Kante after leaving his fox pack to sign at Stamford Bridge, but it’s a deal bearing a closer semblance to that of Danny Drinkwater, truth be told.
Danny Drinkwater at Chelsea
Dewsbury-Hall’s a good player, but he’s going to be consigned to a bit-part role for as long as he plies his trade under Maresca’s wing.
