Concern for Southampton after "disappointing" injury news on £25k-p/w star

As if Russell Martin wasn’t dealt enough of a blow by Leicester City’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory, Southampton already have an injury concern to deal with ahead of the Manchester City game next weekend.

Southampton injury news

It looked as though the Saints finally kicked into gear to get their Premier League campaign going once and for all when Cameron Archer and Joe Aribo put them into a commanding lead after just 28 minutes. That 2-0 lead is where the problems started for Martin’s side, however, who completely capitulated to allow Leicester back into the game.

Southampton take damning step behind the scenes that's bad news for Martin

A concern for the Saints boss…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 10, 2024

Levelling things up courtesy of Facundo Buonanotte and Jamie Vardy in the second-half, summer arrival Jordan Ayew became the hero of the hour when he squeezed his effort beyond Aaron Ramsdale to turn the game on its head in the 98th minute. Beaten and left watching the visitors wheel away in celebration, defeat against Leicester may just be the first nail in the coffin for Martin’s tenure.

The Saints haven’t exactly been handed positive news since that result either, especially on the injury front. As confirmed by Martin, Will Smallbone is an early doubt to face Manchester City next weekend after tweaking his hamstring in his first game back from injury against Leicester. The midfielder came on only to suffer yet another setback.

Martin confirmed the “disappointing” news, telling the Southern Daily Echo: “Will played the last 15 minutes with an injury. It looks like he’s tweaked his hamstring again which is really disappointing for him and for us. He soldiered on and battled through the last 10-15 minutes with that for the team because that’s the kind of guy he is.”

With a trip to face the Premier League champions up next, things couldn’t get much more difficult for a Southampton side desperately in need of a turnaround.

"Gifted" Smallbone adds to Southampton's woes

After missing the last four Premier League games, Smallbone’s return handed Southampton a much-needed boost that they would have been hoping to see play a part in turning a sinking ship around. One game later, however, the midfield is seemingly back on the sidelines to once again add to the woes of those at St Mary’s. As Martin battles for his job, he desperately needs his £25,000-a-week star to make a swift return.

The Saints boss was full of praise for Smallbone after his part in Southampton’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday last season, telling reporters, as relayed by the Daily Echo: “He’s a really outstanding footballer and his performances so far have justified why I wanted to sign him at Swansea – so we must have got one right.

“He will play in different roles for us as well. He really is a gifted footballer with some good Championship experience after last season. I hope he enjoyed that tonight because I really enjoyed watching him.”

As things stand though, Southampton look likely to square off against Manchester City – of all sides – without their midfielder.

Royals' playoff hopes hanging by a thread as they run into well-drilled Super Kings

Anything less than three wins from three games is unlikely to be enough for Samson’s side

Matt Roller01-Oct-20211:40

Is it the end of the road for Raina?

Big pictureChennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals propped up the points table in IPL 2020, finishing seventh and eighth respectively, but their seasons have contrasted in 2021: CSK were the first team to secure their knockout spot when they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday while Royals’ hopes are hanging by a thread.Super Kings’ success has been built on two key factors: stability and batting depth. With the luxury of lower-order hitters like Shardul Thakur and Deepak Chahar carded at No. 9 and 10, their batters have had license to play aggressively throughout, particularly in the period immediately after the powerplay when most teams have looked to play low-risk shots. They resisted a complete overhaul after last year’s disappointment and have instead backed a similar core of players, using only 14 across the season (four fewer than any other team).Royals, meanwhile, have struggled to cope with the absence of three key overseas players in Jofra Archer (elbow injury), Jos Buttler (paternity leave) and Ben Stokes (mental-health break). Evin Lewis and Mustafizur Rahman have both impressed but Chris Morris has struggled in the UAE leg and Liam Livingstone is yet to make an impact from the middle order.By the time they get onto the pitch for the second game of Saturday’s double-header, they will have a much clearer picture of their chances of qualifying but the message from the camp has been that anything less than three wins from three is unlikely to be enough. Their final two games are against Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians, both pushing for a qualification spot; they need to win on Saturday to ensure they still have a realistic chance ahead of those two fixtures.Watch IPL on ESPN+ (US only)

The 2021 IPL is available in the US on ESPN+. You can subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the match in English here and in Hindi here, on Friday.

Qualification chancesA win against Super Kings will keep Royals in the hunt, as 14 points could lead to qualification without NRR coming into play. Even with 12 points, Royals could go through as the fourth team if Knight Riders, Kings and Mumbai Indians lose all their remaining games and stay on 10 points each. That, though, is an unlikely scenario. If it comes down to NRR, Royals will struggle as their rate is the worst among the teams in contention. For Super Kings, a win will almost certainly ensure a top-two finish. Currently, it’s possible for three teams to finish on 20 or more points, but Super Kings’ NRR of 1.002 is so far ahead of Royal Challengers’ -0.200 that it is almost impossible for Super Kings to fall behind. Even if Royal Challengers win each of their last three matches by 40 runs (after scoring 160), their NRR will only improve to 0.29. Thus, a win against Royals will pretty much ensure CSK finish in the top two.In the newsWith their season on the line, will Royals stick to their guns or make changes? Kumar Sangakkara, their director of cricket, admitted after their defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore that Morris “has not done the job as well as he would like to or we would have liked him to in the second half – he knows it and we know it”. Oshane Thomas and Tabraiz Shamsi are the candidates to replace him. Livingstone, meanwhile, could come under pressure for his spot from Glenn Phillips or David Miller, and Riyan Parag is clinging onto his spot after 93 runs in 10 innings across the season.Super Kings may take the opportunity to rest a couple of players after sealing their qualification, with Sam Curran a candidate to return to the side if Dwayne Bravo or Josh Hazlewood’s workloads are managed, though head coach Stephen Fleming said they “won’t be too experimental” as they look to confirm a top-two finish.Sanju Samson vs MS Dhoni: who will come out on top?•BCCI/IPL

Likely XIsRajasthan Royals (possible): 1 Evin Lewis, 2 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 3 Sanju Samson (capt&wk), 4 Liam Livingstone, 5 Mahipal Lomror, 6 Riyan Parag/Shivam Dube, 7 Rahul Tewatia, 8 Chris Morris/Oshane Thomas, 9 Chetan Sakariya, 10 Kartik Tyagi, 11 Mustafizur RahmanChennai Super Kings (possible): 1 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 2 Faf du Plessis, 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Suresh Raina, 5 Ambati Rayudu, 6 MS Dhoni (capt&wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Sam Curran/Dwayne Bravo, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Josh HazlewoodStrategy punt Super Kings have scored 8.67 runs per over in the middle overs this season, second only to Rajasthan, and are the fastest-scoring team at the death in the competition. With that in mind, could Royals find a way to pick Oshane Thomas as a middle-over enforcer? Thomas bowled with pace and hostility in the recent CPL season and his short balls could match up well against Moeen Ali and Suresh Raina in the post-powerplay phase. Moeen has only bowled four overs in four games for Super Kings in the UAE leg of the season but could be a good option on Saturday. Lewis has scored at a strike rate of just 102.76 against offspin since the start of 2019 and with a left-handed opening partner in Yashasvi Jaiswal, it would be no surprise to see Moeen thrown the ball inside the powerplay to turn the ball away from the outside edge.Stats that matter Deepak Chahar has been the leading powerplay bowler in IPL 2021 by a distance. He has taken nine new-ball wickets, four more than anyone else. Royals’ squad contains the three most prolific six-hitters in T20 cricket this calendar year: Glenn Phillips (87), Liam Livingstone (82) and Evin Lewis (72). MS Dhoni has won five tosses out of 11 this season, and Super Kings have won all five of those games. Sanju Samson has scored 452 runs in IPL 2021, and needs 71 more to break KL Rahul’s record for the most in a single season by a wicketkeeper-captain.

Birmingham had the original version of Bellingham but sold him for just £3m

Birmingham City have been blessed with a number of top talents coming through their academy over recent years, away from the star-studded quality at Chris Davies’ disposal currently in League One.

Jordan James was the latest breakout star from the Blues youth structure when he departed for Rennes this summer, costing the Ligue 1 club a sizeable £4m to pick up, after he had exploded into life for his boyhood club from the middle of the park.

Of course, there is a more notable midfield ace who used to call Birmingham his home as a starlet learning the ropes before a major move took place, in the form of Real Madrid superstar Jude Bellingham.

Bellingham's time with Birmingham

Before all of that occurred for the former Blues youngster, Bellingham was the cream of the crop for the EFL club when it came to top homegrown prodigies rising up the ranks, with the then-teenager making his Birmingham debut back in 2019 at just 16 years of age.

The rest is obviously now history, with Bellingham going on to tally up four goals and two assists from 44 first-team appearances at St. Andrew’s, before leaving his boyhood side behind for Borussia Dortmund only a season into his men’s team development.

At least Birmingham managed to salvage back some pretty pennies from Bellingham’s sad departure though, which even saw the club retire his number 22 jersey, with Dortmund paying up a hefty fee around the £25m ballpark.

Now, the 21-year-old has reached unbelievable heights at the Santiago Bernabeu to fully justify Birmingham’s decision to set aside his number 22 strip, with a sublime 23 goals and 16 assists next to his name now from 52 clashes in Spain.

He would also become a national treasure this summer at the Euros for England by scoring this dramatic overhead kick, further cementing himself as a world-beater away from being adored in Madrid and the West Midlands.

Birmingham haven’t always been so fortunate in raking in lots of money off the back of selling some of their top academy products, however, with this low sale in 2013 no doubt irking those looking back.

Nathan Redmond's time at Birmingham

Nathan Redmond was arguably the original Bellingham before the teenager left his mark on proceedings at St. Andrew’s, having also been launched into the first team set-up from a young age.

He too made his debut in the men’s fold at the tender age of 16 in 2010, before going on to become a regular under the likes of Lee Clark in the Birmingham dug-out.

5. Romolle Donovan

In illustrious company in the table above with the well-known Bellingham brothers, Redmond would go on to make far more appearances at St. Andrew’s than the now La Liga star managed, with an impressive nine goals and 11 assists notched up from 82 overall games.

You would think that would result in a club having to break the bank to land Redmond’s services, therefore, but in the wake of Birmingham’s disappointing 12th placed finish in the Championship during the 2012/13 campaign, top-flight Norwich City swooped in to land him for a cut price.

The Canaries would land the pacey winger from Clark and co for only £3m, with the Birmingham-born attacker going to become a Premier League regular for both Norwich and then Southampton for many seasons, amassing 276 Premier League appearances mainly donning a Saints strip.

The Blues must wish now that they had driven a harder bargain, but will strive to find their next Bellingham and Redmond in the here and now, with St Andrew’s obviously fertile ground for youngsters to prosper from.

Warwickshire claim Bob Willis crown as Mark Robinson achieves dream county return

Twin success in first season augers well as Warwickshire demonstrate strength in depth

Warwickshire have completed their first double since 1995 with an emphatic victory in the Bob Willis Trophy at Lord’s.The club, which wrapped up the LV= Insurance County Championship title a week ago, completed an innings victory over Lancashire within 70 minutues of the start of day four. They won the 2nd XI T20 competition, too. Whichever way you look at it, really, that’s a fine season. It was noticeable that there were no Warwickshire players in the PCA’s Championship team of the season named earlier this week. You could argue there should have been – certainly Rob Yates, who made more first-class centuries than anyone else and Liam Norwell, who passed 50 first-class wickets in this match, are worth a mention in dispatches – but it wasn’t an outrageous miscarriage of justice. Nobody in the side claimed 50 wickets or scored 900 runs in the Championship, after all.But it is a team game. And five players claimed at least 20 wickets and five scored at least 500 runs. The depth of Warwickshire’s squad allowed them to spread the burden of performance, with current and former England players like Chris Woakes, Dom Sibley, Tim Bresnan, and Olly Stone playing vital roles at various times. Having beaten Essex, Somerset, Yorkshire, Lancashire and Nottinghamshire (home and away) in first-class cricket over the course of this season, it would be churlish to deny them full credit for their success. There is talk – particularly around the Warwickshire camp – that Danny Briggs should be considered for the Ashes tour party. And it is true, with his improved batting, his calm head and his reliable left-arm spin, he would not let England down. It must be remembered, however, that he hasn’t taken a first-class five-for since 2016, and he hasn’t taken one in Division One of the County Championship since 2011. If he goes, expectations of what he can achieve should be realistic. Jack Leach could feel justifiably aggrieved if Briggs were selected ahead of him.Briggs has been a terrific acquisition for Warwickshire, though. Given how successful Luke Wells – who is a terrific slip fielder and averaged 40 in the Championship despite the challenges of batting in the top order – has been at Lancashire as well and it’s hard not to scratch your head at some of the decision-making at Sussex in recent times. The club, which deemed both Briggs and Wells surplus to requirements at the end of 2020, finished 2021 at the bottom of Division Three.Their supporters might take some solace in the success of those former players and of Mark Robinson, who developed his coaching career at the club, and has just become a rare example of winning the Championship as head coach at two different clubs. Peter Moores, another Sussex graduate is the only other man to have done so. Robinson’s appointment at Edgbaston, as an outside voice at a club which may have become something of an echo chamber of former Warwickshire players in recent years, has been proved wise.Michael Burgess claimed the catch that sealed the Bob Willis Trophy•Alex Davidson/Getty Images

Sussex, indeed any organisation or individual, could probably do far worse than look at Robinson’s phlegmatic attitude to the ups and downs of his own career. His previous visit to Lord’s was as coach of the England Women’s side which won the 2017 World Cup. But, in between times, he was sacked and spent some time on the periphery of the professional game. He looks at it now as something of a blessing.”Having a year out of the game was really good for me,” Robinson said. “You recharge. You think differently. I worked with an Associate Nation; I did some consultancy work with first-class counties; I worked with the England Deaf team. I did private coaching with eight-year-old girls and 55-year-old men. And the thing I learned was, I absolutely love coaching.”But yes, you do wonder if you’ll ever get to come places like this again. So coming here was really special for me. Maybe, the older we get, the wiser we get and we learn to savour everything we’re given.”At Sussex I was lucky enough to inherit a very good team. The success with England’s women was so special because it was such a monumental day for the sport.”So, how special was this? Well, I had to come back. And I hope it reflects well on the women’s game because I’m a better coach for the experience. They taught me a lot. So, yes, it is different and it is special. I’m a happy bloke.”Robinson believes the key moment in the season came early. In the second match, at Trent Bridge, Warwickshire spent the best part of three days clinging on against a Notts team which looked better than them. But they snatched a win there and backed it up with almost an equally unlikely victory against Essex at Edgbaston.Related

Championship set to return to two divisions in 2023

“We stayed alive in a game in which we were being bullied,” Robinson said of the Trent Bridge encounter. “And then we stole it. And from moments like that, players get belief.”This club has lost great players like Ian Bell, Jonathan Trott, Jeetan Patel and Tim Ambrose over the last few years. So, I’ve said to the team ‘this is your time, this is your chance to create the habits and behaviours of a successful team’. You never want to get too carried away, but this success should give them further confidence and we’ll look to build on that.”He remains concerned, however, about the first-class game in general. In particular, he warned that the proliferation of low-scoring surfaces will compromise the development of Test players in the long-term. “There were always difficult pitches at the start of the season,” he says. “But you had better ones in July and August. We miss out on those now and there’s less pace in the game as a result. You generally only want a medium-pacer who can hit batters on the shins. Batters get a bad press, but it’s really tough for them now.”In Robinson’s view, a return to two divisions with promotion and relegation would be welcome. “The draw becomes really important in that scenario,” he says. “What we saw this season was a scramble for results at the end of the conference system with result wickets all over the place. There were 25-wickets in a day. It can’t be right.”It was probably fitting, then, that this match was defined by events within the first hour of the first day. Having been put in on a late-September morning, Lancashire found themselves 12 for 6. It’s a long way back into a game from that position. Just as we found when we played limited-overs finals on this ground so late in the season, the toss becomes disproportionately important. The integrity of matches played in such circumstances has to be open to question.Much the same could be said about the scheduling of the Championship season. While it is routinely suggested the ECB has prioritised white-ball cricket as it more importantly financially, it is a naïve understanding of the situation. Instead, the bulk of broadcast revenues still come from the Test game so, by compromising the value of the domestic competition which produces Test players, you might argue the ECB is risking the sport’s financial security.Certainly, until the ECB starts prioritising the scheduling of first-class cricket, claims that Test cricket remains paramount feel hollow. An end to white-ball windows in the prime weeks of summer would be the easiest way to achieve better scheduling, but centrally contracting groundstaffs and even allowing first-class cricket to be played on hybrid pitches might also be worth exploring. At present the value of most Championship cricket as a breeding ground for Test players is minimal. And if counties render themselves irrelevant – and one or two are certainly flirting with that definition – they will be in real trouble. We live in pragmatic times. It might be noted that the vote the ECB originally hoped to hold this week into the structure of the 2022 and 2023 season has been delayed amid uncertainty it would be carried. A significant number of counties – at least seven, it seems – favour an immediate return to two divisions with promotion and relegation rather than another season of conferences.Whether the Bob Willis Trophy has a future is also open to debate. It might well have a place as the curtain-raiser to a season and it could, perhaps, be incorporated into the MCC’s Champion County fixture which has traditionally served that purpose. But squeezing it on to the end of a season serves very little purpose and threatens to compromise the validity of the Championship title. There’s a good reason first-class cricket hadn’t been played in October for more than 150 years.

Nestor, inclusive, cometeu a falta do segundo gol do Bugre.
