Chelsea ace who was let go for £0 is now worth more than Madueke & Fofana

Chelsea have been a club who have recruited excellently over the years, signing players from all over the globe to improve their squad and help them win various major trophies.

The Blues are, however, without any silverware since the UEFA Super Cup at the start of the 2021/22 season, with new boss Enzo Maresca tasked with leading the club back towards the top of the Premier League and competing for titles.

The Italian has only been at the helm a matter of months, but he’s already recruited well, with various talents arriving at Stamford Bridge in different ways.

Jadon Sancho arrived on loan with an obligation to buy from Manchester United, making an immediate impact for the Blues, registering two assists in his first two outings for his new club.

João Félix has also impressed, rejoining the club on a permanent basis after spending six months on loan in West London during the 2022/23 campaign.

However, two players who were already at the Bridge have also caught the eye during the opening weeks of the 2024/25 campaign.

Madueke & Fofana’s stats for Chelsea in 2024/25

Forward Noni Madueke has enjoyed an excellent start to life under Maresca during the first few outings of the new season, cementing himself as a regular first-team starter under the Italian.

The 22-year-old has already registered four goals in all competitions, increasing his output in the final third – a crucial feature if he is to be a success at the club.

His best performance undoubtedly came in the 6-2 rout over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux, with Madueke bagging a second-half hat-trick – the first of his senior career.

As for Wesley Fofana, he’s endured a torrid time at the Bridge after his £75m move from Leicester City back in the summer of 2022, spending most of his time at the club injured on the sidelines.

He made 20 appearances in his debut campaign, before suffering an ACL injury that ruled him out of the entirety of last season. However, he’s started every single league outing so far this campaign, becoming a regular under new boss Maresca.

Despite the pair’s respective form in 2024/25, one player who previously plied his trade for the Blues has seen a huge increase in his market value after leaving the club.

The player who’s now worth more than Madueke & Fofana

Centre-back Andreas Christensen came through Chelsea’s academy, before breaking into the first-team and making over 100 appearances for the Blues.

Andreas Christensen, Franck Kessie, and Sergio Busquets of Barcelona.

However, at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, the Danish international’s contract expired, leaving the club and departing Thomas Tuchel’s side for Spanish giants Barcelona – joining on a four-year contract.

The move has allowed the 28-year-old to star in LaLiga, featuring 75 times for the Catalan outfit – with his market value skyrocketing as a result of his consistent displays.

Christensen is now valued at £33m as per Transfermarkt, with his subsequent value higher than current first-team stars Madueke and Fofana.

The aforementioned are only valued at £23m and £21m despite their excellent form under Maresca at the Bridge – with the club potentially regretting the decision to allow Christensen to depart the club for nothing under Tuchel’s watch.

Andreas Christensen

The Dane has proven that he’s capable of starring at the top level of European football, demonstrating qualities that would undoubtedly be of use to the current squad.

With the club looking to return to the top end of the Premier League, Christensen would’ve been able to provide that added quality needed in defensive areas, with the Blues now living to regret their decision from two years ago.

£90m wasted: Enzo must axe Chelsea dud who earns more than Palmer & Jackson

His time at the Blues has been turbulent to say the least.

Um time bastante ofensivo – disse.

Najmul Hossain Shanto admits Bangladesh in 'good position' but bowlers 'have their work cut out'

“It was always going to be useful to give our bowlers more time to get Zimbabwe bowled out”

Najmul Hossain Shanto has said that Bangladesh went for quick runs on the fourth day to give his team’s bowlers ample time to bowl Zimbabwe out in the fourth innings. Shanto and Shadman Islam both struck unbeaten centuries to raise Bangladesh’s lead to 476 runs, before Brendan Taylor’s counterattacking 92 took the hosts to 140 for 3 at stumps.Shanto said that while Bangladesh were still on course for victory, the Harare pitch did not have too many demons for the batters.”It was always going to be useful to give our bowlers more time to get them bowled out,” Shanto said. “That’s why we needed to score quick runs, and it went according to plan. I think we are in a good position. But we have a lot of work to do. The wicket is still quite good. Our bowlers and fielders have their work cut out. We hope to take early wickets, which will make things easy for us.”Shanto’s 117 included six sixes, a new record in Zimbabwe, as he went after the part-time spinners Roy Kaia and Milton Shumba. He added 196 runs with Islam, Bangladesh’s highest second-wicket stand against Zimbabwe. This was Shanto’s second century in three Tests although there have been some low scores in between. “I try to stay in the present, not think about what happened in the last four innings. I can have a bad day, but I always try to score runs.”Shanto said that he and Islam were guiding each other throughout the partnership.”The positive side was that we spoke to each other about what to do and when to do it. We were not thinking about scoring hundreds. We were responding to the match situation, but we finished on two good scores,” he said.Islam dedicated his maiden Test century to his parents. Islam’s father has been working in BCB’s development programme for two decades, specialising in scouting young talent. Both Islam and Shanto have come through this system, although Islam is a late bloomer.”I wanted to play ball-by-ball but I ended up getting a century. I am happy about my achievement. This century came because of my team-mates and coaches. I’d like to dedicate it to my parents,” he said.Islam also said that he felt bad that Saif Hassan, who made 43, missed out on a big score.”Saif was unfortunate to get out in that way. He was batting well today, and we were doing well together. Shanto came and told me that we should continue in the same way. But things changed after lunch, when we decided to up the scoring rate.”

As partes vinham conversando desde a reta final do Brasileirão.

O Alvinegro mantêm 10% do zagueiro.

Taylor left out of T20 World Cup squad; NZ pick Chapman, Todd Astle among 15

de Grandhomme and Finn Allen also didn’t find a place

Mark Chapman will be playing his third T20 World Cup•AFP

Mark Chapman, who represented Hong Kong at the T20 World Cup in 2014 and 2016, has been named in New Zealand’s 15-member squad for the 2021 edition to be played in the UAE and Oman this October-November.There was no place for Ross Taylor, Colin de Grandhomme and Finn Allen. But Todd Astle, the 34-year-old legspinner and all of four T20Is old, was picked along with two other spinners in the squad – legspinner Ish Sodhi and left-arm spinning allrounder Mitchell Santner – for surfaces that will most likely aid turn.Fast bowler Adam Milne was named as a standby who will travel with the squad, but will be called upon only as an injury replacement. The same squad will also tour India later this year for three T20Is.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The squad features four frontline fast bowlers – Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Kyle Jamieson and Lockie Ferguson. Barring Southee, the other three would have had considerable training and match time at the IPL leading into the World Cup.Boult is part of the Mumbai Indians attack, while Jamieson and Ferguson are key fast bowlers for Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders, respectively. Like the faster men, Williamson and Jimmy Neesham, too, will head from the IPL into the World Cup, where New Zealand are yet to make a final.Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips are the two wicketkeeping options. New Zealand can also call upon a third, Devon Conway, if required. Conway’s inclusion in the squad is a possible sign that the finger injury he sustained while batting for Southern Brave in the Hundred earlier this month, isn’t very serious. The Wellington batter enjoyed a prolific maiden season as an international cricketer, one that culminated with New Zealand beating India to be crowned the inaugural World Test Champions.Among the absentees, Taylor, a veteran of 102 T20Is, last featured in a T20I in November last year and de Grandhomme, meanwhile, hasn’t featured in a T20I for close to 17 months, having last played India in January 2020. Allen, the highest run-scorer in the Super Smash last season, also missed out. Allen smashed 512 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 193 for tournament winners Wellington Firebirds. Those performances earned him a T20I debut against Bangladesh in March. He also earned a maiden IPL call-up on the back of a breakout season, picked by Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers.New Zealand are placed in Group 2 alongside India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and two qualifiers at the T20 World Cup. After that, they will fly out to India for a T20I series followed by two Tests. NZC will announce the Test squad after a month or so.Squad for T20 World Cup and India T20Is: Kane Williamson (capt), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Kyle Jamieson, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert (wk), Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Adam Milne (injury cover)

Arteta could drop "sensational" Arsenal star to finally unleash Nwaneri

They might not be top of the table at the moment, but Arsenal should feel supremely confident about their chances of finally ending their two-decade title drought come May.

Mikel Arteta’s side have already played Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Manchester City away, and with a kinder run of league fixtures to come over the next month or so, they should still be near the top come Christmas.

However, the next game on the agenda is a home Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain, and given the congested nature of the fixture list, Arteta should look to rest one of his stars and hand Ethan Nwaneri his first start in Europe.

Why Nwaneri should start

So, while Nwaneri’s simply unreal record of 27 goals and ten assists in 52 youth team games should be reason enough to give him a chance tonight, his recent form for the first team makes his case impossible to ignore.

So far this season, the 17-year-old gem has made three appearances for Arsenal, and while his start in the League Cup, in which he bagged a brace, has understandably catapulted him into the spotlight, his two substitute appearances in the league have also been just as revealing.

For example, when the Gunners were 1-0 up in the North London Derby a few weeks ago, and the clock was ticking down, Arteta turned to the Hale Ender and not another defender to come on for the last ten minutes or so.

While some youngsters would be overawed by such an intense match, the Enfield-born star looked utterly unphased, played his game, and looked like a threat from his very first touch.

Something similar happened on Saturday as well. With the score level in the 85th minute, instead of turning to the infinitely more experienced Gabriel Jesus, the manager once again threw the talented midfielder on, and while he couldn’t score, he came incredibly close to doing so and offered more in his short cameo than some players do in entire games.

Overall, it’s certainly a lot to ask of a youngster to start in a game against Paris Saint-Germain, but as the old saying goes, if you’re good enough, you’re old enough, and there can be no doubting now, that Nwaneri is certainly good enough.

Why Thomas Partey should be rested

Okay, so if Nwaneri is going to come into the starting lineup tonight, someone has to make way, and that player is Thomas Partey.

Thomas Partey

This will allow Declan Rice to start as the six and potentially Jorginho or Leandro Trossard to fill in as the left-eight, depending on how aggressive the manager plans on being.

Now, with that said, while we are dropping the former Atlético Madrid star from the starting lineup, it is not due to his performances, as while he’s had a few off-games this season, he’s also reminded fans of how good he can be in the games against City, Tottenham, and Villa.

In fact, even though he picked up a 6/10 for his display against Leicester City from football.london’s Kaya Kaynak, the “sensational” midfielder, as dubbed by La Liga expert Gerry Armstrong, put in a decent performance in the first half, and by the time he was taken off in the 85th minute, he had taken 107 touches, completed 87 of 96 passes, completed 100% of his long balls and made four tackles.

However, he did start to tire in the second 45, which is entirely understandable as, aside from the match against Bolton, he has started every game so far this season, and when you take into account his injury record, that is a lot of football in a short space of time.

Across his entire Arsenal career, the Ghanaian superstar has missed 80 games for club and country due to ten different injuries, and due to his seeming importance to the team this season, Arteta cannot afford to lose him for an extended period.

Therefore, while it’s an important game, Partey should be given the chance to rest tonight, as a midfield of Rice, Jorginho or Trossard, and the incredibly exciting Nwaneri should be enough to get the job done at home, especially if Arteta goes full strength elsewhere in the team.

The exciting prospect could be yet another sensational talent to come out of the Gunners’ famed academy.

UAE wicketkeeper Ghulam Shabber banned for four years

Among the charges against him were failure to disclose corrupt approaches and obstruction of the ICC’s investigations

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Sep-2021

Ghulam Shabber played 23 ODIs and 17 T20Is for UAE•Peter Della Penna

UAE wicketkeeper-batter Ghulam Shabber has been banned from all cricket for four years, having been found guilty breaching the ICC’s anti-corruption code on six counts. Shabber admitted to the breaches, and will next be eligible to play on August 20, 2025.Among the charges against him were failure to disclose corrupt approaches in relation to series against Nepal in Jan-Feb 2019 and Zimbabwe in April 2019, failure to disclose details of an approach received by a team-mate for that Zimbabwe series, failure to disclose full details on facts/incidents that might have been evidence of corrupt conduct from others, failure to fully cooperate with the Anti-Corruption Unit’s (ACU) investigation – by, among other things, “failing to surrender all his mobile devices upon request” – and obstructing the ACU’s investigation by concealing possibly relevant information.Shabber, 35, played 23 ODIs and 17 T20Is for UAE between 2016 and 2019. He ran into trouble in October 2019, when he “absconded” from the team set-up ahead of a match against Hong Kong during the Men’s T20 World Cup qualifiers being played in the UAE. The Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) subsequently suspended him, and said following an “extensive search” that he had surfaced in Pakistan.Related

Qadeer Ahmed handed five-year ban for corruption

Naveed and Anwar handed eight-year bans for corruption

Shabber suspended by Emirates board after disappearance

His disappearance from the UAE had coincided with the ICC announcing the provisional suspension of UAE players Mohammad Naveed, Qadeer Ahmed and Shaiman Anwar for various breaches of the anti-corruption code. Qadeer has since been banned for five years, and Naveed and Anwar for eight years apiece. The ICC’s general manager – integrity unit, Alex Marshall, said of the decision on Shabber: “[He] was expected to understand his responsibilities as an international cricketer. He attended at least three anti-corruption education sessions in which players were reminded of their obligations to report any approaches by corrupters.”It was disappointing to note that he did not report any of the approaches. Although he was cooperative when interviewed and expressed remorse, it is only appropriate that he be banned so that a strong message goes out to other players and potential corrupters.”

Like Kuhn on the left: Celtic could land their next superstar in 2025

It is to Brendan Rodgers’ credit that he was still able to steer his dominant Celtic side to a domestic double last season, despite having endured a rather limp first transfer window back at the club.

Among those to have arrived in the summer of 2023 was the centre-back pairing of Gustav Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki, although the former played a bit-part role before joining FC Twente on loan this summer, while the latter has made just one appearance so far this term and just 14 in total for the Old Firm side.

Marco Tilio, meanwhile, was sent back to his native Australia before he’d even had time to settle in Glasgow, while promising midfielder, Hyeok-kyu Kwon is now on his second temporary stint away from Parkhead, at Hibernian.

Fellow youngster Odin Thiago Holm seemingly can’t get a game under Rodgers despite having been tipped to be Matt O’Riley’s long-term successor, while on the flanks, both Luis Palma and Hyun-jun Yang have fallen behind long-serving veteran James Forrest, in the attacking pecking order.

Thankfully, it seems, the Hoops have not been set back too greatly by that turbulent period of recruitment, having at least made one solid signing during the 2023/24 campaign which has begun to bear fruit, in the form of Nicholas Kuhn.

Nicholas Kuhn's season in numbers

Having arrived from Austrian side Rapid Vienna back in January, the German winger did endure a mixed first six months in Scottish football, having ended the season with just three goals and three assists in 18 appearances in all competitions for his new side.

Nicolas Kuhn

That underwhelming return no doubt sparked fears over whether the 24-year-old was yet another wayward signing by those at Celtic Park, although ever since pre-season, the tricky left-footer has looked like a man reborn on that right flank.

A brace against Manchester City back in late July set the tone for what has been a stunning campaign so far for the wing wizard, having already eclipsed his tally from last term with relative ease.

Remarkably, in just 11 appearances in 2024/25 to date, the former Germany U20 international boasts six goals and eight assists in all, with that haul of 14 goal involvements placing him ahead of any other member of the Celtic squad.

Looking now like being the club’s new Jota-like superstar, the Hoops could well be keen to snap up an equally as exciting talent on the opposite flank in the near future…

Celtic transfer news

As reported earlier this week, Celtic are believed to be among the clubs who are keen on signing Hammarby youngster Bazoumana Toure, with a move in 2025 potentially in the offing.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The suggestion from GIVEMESPORT is that both the Hoops and Manchester United have sent scouts to watch the 18-year-old in action this season, albeit with another Premier League side – Crystal Palace – showing the most interest at present.

That could ensure that Rodgers and co may have a real battle on their hands to land the in-demand teenager, although forking out the reported £8m transfer fee to secure his signature could well prove worth it indeed.

Why Celtic should sign Bazoumana Toure

Splashing out £8m for a player who has made just 21 senior appearances in his career to date may seem ludicrous, but young Toure certainly warrants that price tag amid what has been a sparkling start to life in Sweden.

Formerly on the books at Ivorian outfit ASEC Mimosas – for whom he made only two appearances – the rising star has dazzled since arriving at Hammarby earlier this year, having been hailed as a “great signing” for the club by talent scout, Jacek Kulig.

Also lauded as a “super player” by Kulig, the Hoops target already boasts seven goals and three assists in just 19 games for his new side, showcasing his ability – like Kuhn – to both get on the scoresheet himself and create chances for others.

Nicolas Kuhn

A left-footer, also like Kuhn, Toure does in fact typically operate on the left flank, with data analyst Ben Mattinson likening him to Chelsea’s Pedro Neto in that regard, albeit while stating that he’s a “more intelligent passer” and has “more variance to his game” than the £54m signing.

With the ability also to “burn” any full-back – in the words of Mattinson – the explosive talent would offer a real direct threat down the left, while also boasting the end product to match, having created six ‘big chances’ in the Allsvenskan in 2024, while averaging 1.8 successful dribbles per game.

That is not far off Kuhn’s record of two successful dribbles per Premiership outing in the early knockings of this season, indicating just what a superstar Celtic could have on their hands if a deal can be struck.

With Kuhn already running defences ragged in recent times, having another fleet-footed starlet on the opposite side could prove too hot to handle, both in the Premiership and in Europe.
