Dillon Pennington squeezes two wickets between rain breaks for Worcestershire

Nottinghamshire 51 for 3 as rain restricts play to 15.5 overs at Trent Bridge

Spectators returned to Trent Bridge for the first time in 608 days but witnessed only 15.5 overs of cricket on a fragmented opening day of the LV=Insurance County Championship match with Worcestershire as Nottinghamshire closed on 51 for 3.Dillon Pennington, returning to the Pears line-up after being rested from the trip to Durham last week, took 2 for 12 from his 11.5 overs, Alzarri Joseph picking up the other wicket to fall after Worcestershire won the toss and chose to make the home side bat first on the pitch used when Nottinghamshire beat Essex here two weeks ago.Joe Clarke was out for a second-ball duck against his former team-mates, while Haseeb Hameed, who made hundreds in both innings when these sides met at New Road last month, fell for 24.There were more than 1,000 people at the historic venue when play started on time but only a few hardy souls stuck it out until play was called off soon after 6.15pm after a thoroughly inhospitable day. Each wicket that fell was promptly followed by a stoppage. Pennington dismissed Ben Slater, who had matched Hameed’s 114 not out in the second innings as Nottinghamshire emerged with a draw at New Road, when he switched to round the wicket to the left-hander, who had pulled him for six in his previous over.Slater nicked to wicketkeeper Ben Cox and was immediately joined by the rest of the players in hurrying back to the pavilion as the first spell of rain arrived. The remaining action was contained in three brief passages, of 11 minutes, nine minutes and five minutes, yet the shorter two of those each brought a wicket.Hameed had picked up four boundaries after a positive start but Joseph surprised him with a ball that climbed off a length and glanced the shoulder of the bat, Cox taking the catch. The players were off again after one more delivery, returning next for long enough for Pennington to produce the best ball of his spell, squaring up Clarke and finding enough late movement to take the edge, Cox pouching his third catch as the 22-year-old seamer doubled his wickets tally for the season.Play was due to resume for a fourth time at 6.15 after a two-and-a-half hour stoppage only for umpires Alex Wharf and Billy Taylor to discover a damp patch on the pitch, which they deemed unsafe.

New Zealand take aim at depleted England on Lord's return

Williamson’s men look to improve patchy away record in the lead-up to WTC final

Matt Roller01-Jun-2021Big pictureTwenty-three months on from a day of agony and ecstasy, New Zealand are back at Lord’s. Nine of their 19-man squad, seven of whom played in that final, are returning to the scene of their World Cup near-miss, and just in case they needed reminding of the granular detail, they arrived at the Ageas Bowl’s hotel for their training camp last month and found Sky Sports’ cricket channel showing a rerun of the final. The circumstances this week are very different: New Zealand are only building up to the main event, the inaugural World Test Championship final against India, which starts on June 18, while Joe Root is likely to be England’s lone representative of the 50-over squad from 2019, in the absence of their IPL returnees and the injured Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer. Even still, with fans returning to an England home international for the first time since the end of that summer, Super Over is unlikely to go unmentioned.Related

Explainer: Why are England, NZ playing a Test series now?

'It happens when you don't expect it' – Bracey

Top-order batter to 'something special' fast bowler – the Kyle Jamieson story

Taylor banks on county experience to counter England bowlers

The series itself is something of an anomaly: it is not part of the Future Tours Programme or the WTC, and has been bolted onto the front of a jammed schedule for England that includes Sri Lanka and Pakistan’s limited-overs tours and the mid-summer headliner: a five-Test series against India. With their multi-format players rested following 10 days of post-IPL hotel quarantine, England have admitted they are using this as a chance to “look at new faces” – including two potential debutants this week in Gloucestershire wicketkeeper-batter James Bracey (whose inclusion was confirmed by Root on Thursday) and Ollie Robinson, the tall Sussex seamer. This is Chris Silverwood’s first series since becoming selector on top of his head coach role, and while there was little intrigue in the squad he named – he was spared any tough decisions by the number of absentees – there is a tricky balancing act to be struck between focusing on the series itself and giving opportunities to players he feels will be important this winter: England’s fixation with the 2021-22 Ashes seems to be as strong as ever, and as such, it is not completely guaranteed that James Anderson and Stuart Broad will play together in both Tests. Even in the absence of Archer, Chris Woakes and Sam Curran, England’s bowling attack is close to full-strength, but their batting is comparatively raw: Rory Burns, with 23 caps, is the second-most experienced member of the top seven behind Root, who needs more support from the rest of the side than he got in Sri Lanka and India earlier this year. While New Zealand’s primary focus will be to ensure they have a fit, in-form squad to pick from in two weeks’ time, there is also an opportunity to win in England for the first time this century. The gunslinging series in 2015 finished in a 1-1 draw despite large periods of dominance, and their away record in Tests has been patchy in the last five years, with one series win (against Pakistan in the UAE) in their last five tours. But this side has proven time and again that they should not be underestimated. Their seamers were the key to their success in the WTC, and they have the depth to cope with Trent Boult’s absence in this series, with Tim Southee and Neil Wagner leading the attack. Their batting core is settled and consistent, and while Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls and the retiring BJ Watling have been unsung stars, it is Kane Williamson who will be the prized scalp.Williamson’s Test record in England – an average of 30.87 across eight innings – jars with his dominance elsewhere and his composure against the moving ball. He comes into the series on the back of three hundreds (including two doubles) in his four Test knocks in New Zealand’s home summer. If he can lead New Zealand to a rare away win and then the WTC trophy, this will be a legacy-defining month. After a tough tour to India, Ollie Pope will be hoping to deliver big at home•Getty Images

Form guideEngland: LLLWW
New Zealand: WWWWWIn the spotlightIn the absence of Stokes and Jos Buttler, Ollie Pope is the most experienced player in England’s engine room from Nos. 5-8, his 17 caps making him a relative veteran. He has started the season well, with 245 and 131 against Leicestershire and Hampshire respectively, but had his technique dissected by Sky’s pundits during the televised fixture against Middlesex, in particular his off-stump guard. Pope’s logic is that it allows him to leave anything outside off and score heavily off his pads, but it does leave him vulnerable to the nip-backer, especially early on. With his Test average hovering just above 30 after a tough tour to India, England need him to start delivering on his immense potential.Test cricket is an easy game if your name is Kyle Jamieson. His record so far is six caps, six wins, 36 wickets and an average of 13.27, but this is set to be his first appearance outside of New Zealand, and England will have watched hours of footage from his career to date to work out how to go about playing him. Pitches at Lord’s are rarely particularly springy, but at 6ft 8in, he is unlikely to have too many problems finding bounce. His immaculate control of line is one of his biggest assets, which will be tested by the ground’s famous slope and the novelty of the Dukes ball. In Boult’s absence, he may open the bowling for the first time in his career.Team newsThe lack of a genuine allrounder in the squad means that England’s top seven effectively picks itself, with Haseeb Hameed and Sam Billings mainly with the squad as cover, while Robinson looks likely to get the nod ahead of Craig Overton at No. 8. Jack Leach’s success in the holding role for Somerset at Lord’s earlier this summer and the upturn in the weather means Root will probably resist the option of an all-seam attack, though he left open the possibility on Thursday, admitting he had “gained a little bit more confidence in myself” as a spin option on the back of the India tour. It is possible that either Olly Stone or Mark Wood could play ahead of Leach to offer extra pace, or instead of Robinson if England are willing to risk a particularly long tail. Root himself took a blow on his hand in the nets on Monday, but has confirmed he is fully fit.England (possible): 1 Rory Burns, 2 Dom Sibley, 3 Zak Crawley, 4 Joe Root (capt), 5 Ollie Pope, 6 Dan Lawrence, 7 James Bracey (wk), 8 Ollie Robinson, 9 Jack Leach, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James AndersonWilliamson confirmed late on match eve that the in-form Devon Conway would make his Test debut, having been preferred over Tom Blundell or Will Young to open the batting alongside Tom Latham. Colin de Grandhomme is fit again and was an integral part of the rise to No. 1 in the ICC’s rankings but Daryl Mitchell performs a similar role and made a hundred in his last Test; and Mitchell Santner is likely to play as a second allrounder – unless the cut to his spinning finger or a green tinge to the surface means that they opt for a four-man seam attack.New Zealand (possible): 1 Tom Latham, 2 Devon Conway, 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Henry Nicholls, 6 BJ Watling (wk), 7 Colin de Grandhomme/Daryl Mitchell, 8 Mitchell Santner/Matt Henry, 9 Kyle Jamieson, 10 Tim Southee, 11 Neil WagnerKane Williamson tunes up for the Lord’s Test•AFP via Getty Images

Pitch and conditionsAfter a grim, mizzly May, the sun has been shining in London this week and will continue to do so, with highs of 27°C on the first day in St John’s Wood and only limited cloud cover throughout the Test. Lord’s has not hosted a Test since August 2019, when the second Ashes Test finished in a rain-interrupted draw, and as such the pitch is something of an unknown. There was a slight green tinge to the pitch on Tuesday morning, though Stead said that the grass was cut shorter than New Zealand are used to. Wickets have been more frequent at Lord’s than any other ground in the country in this season’s County Championship, though that owes as much to Middlesex’s flaky batting as anything else.Stats and trivia James Anderson will equal Alastair Cook’s record for England Test caps, if he plays. He is eight wickets away from 1,000 in his first-class career. James Bracey will become the first Gloucestershire player to make a Test debut for England since Jon Lewis (now England’s seam-bowling coach) in 2006. This is England’s first home game in front of fans since the fifth Ashes Test in 2019. Lord’s will host crowds of up to 25% capacity (around 7,500). Kane Williamson needs 58 runs to go past Stephen Fleming’s aggregate in Tests and become New Zealand’s second-highest run-scorer of all time, behind Ross Taylor. New Zealand have lost nine of their last 12 away (or neutral) Tests, dating back to August 2016. Phil Neale, England’s long-serving operating manager until his retirement last October, is working as New Zealand’s team liaison officer in this series, while Jeetan Patel, who won 24 Test caps for New Zealand, is England’s spin-bowling coach.Quotes”I’m not massively used to batting down the order but I’m confident I’ll jump into that. When it comes to batting, I like to be gritty and get into a battle. I’m not afraid to put in those hard yards and go through tough spells.”
“It was emotional to a certain extent to think back about being involved in that match and some of the controversies that surrounded it and the drama and all these sorts of things that come with tournament cricket and some of the fine margins. The guys are really excited to be back here: it is always a pleasure to have the opportunity to play at Lord’s”

Newcastle sold a striker for just £2m, now he’s more clinical than Isak

Newcastle United didn't quite hit the mark last season, but mitigating circumstances made it rather hard for Eddie Howe to replicate the feats of the year before.

A seventh-place Premier League finish might've been enough for a place in the Conference League, but Manchester United defeated their city rivals in the FA Cup final and swiped the Magpies' silver.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

A frustrating transfer window followed, but the significance of keeping a hold of the top assets cannot be understated. There was interest in Alexander Isak, but he remains at St. James' Park.

Why keeping Alexander Isak was so important

Two years ago, Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in a club-record signing worth £63m. He endured something of an injury-hit debut campaign but still scored ten goals from just 17 Premier League starts.

Stats via Premier League

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 14% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for non-penalty goals scored, the top 16% for pass completion and the top 10% for progressive carries per 90, so it's clear to see why he's so well regarded. Indeed, according to CIES Football Observatory's player valuation model, he's valued at £82m currently.

Fabrizio Romano said that he was "untouchable" during the off-season despite a glut of proposals and sniffing around from high-profile suitors, and it's looking like the right decision, for he will be the catalyst to fire Newcastle back into continental competition.

He's extremely prolific – one of the best marksmen in Europe, in fact. However, there's a former Magpies flop who's actually proved to be more clinical than the Swedish sensation.

Joselu's even more clinical than Isak

We're talking about Joselu, who's enjoyed quite the career resurgence since departing St. James' Park way back when. The Spanish striker won La Liga and the Champions League with Real Madrid in May before winning the 2024 European Championship with his nation, defeating England in the final.

Newcastle signed Joselu from Stoke City for £5m in 2017, with Rafa Benitez welcoming his countryman after a middling spell with the Potters that saw him post four goals and three assists over 24 matches.

The nomadic centre-forward, however, flattered to deceive on Tyneside, flopping like a seal and scoring four times across 30 outings, fading into the background after an impressive start – especially so on home turf.

The 34-year-old's second campaign with Newcastle and final year in England proved disastrous, with Joselu notching two goals over the first three games but slumping thereafter, featuring only a few times across the latter half of the season.

It was no surprise when he was sold to Deportivo Alaves for just £2m in 2019. His potent career back in his homeland since has indeed seen him become an unlikely hero for Los Blancos after a prolific few years with Espanyol, scoring 17 goals for Real Madrid last year and notably netting both goals as his side dramatically defeated Bayern Munich in the semi-final of the Champions League.

His exploits have seen him earn a lucrative late-career transfer to Qatar, but according to FBref, the 6 foot 3 ace still ranks among the top 4% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for non-penalty goals scored per 90, at a rate of 0.71.

Isak has bagged at a rate of 0.74 when taking penalties into consideration, but only 0.56 without, speaking highly of Joselu's ball-striking ability.

The older the violin, the sweeter the music. It's a shame that Newcastle couldn't get him playing to their tune.

Eu quase me emocionei quando abracei Dudu e Ademir.

ABAFA DO ATLÉTICO-GO

RESPOSTA DO BAHIA

Dillon Pennington produced his career-best performance with the ball as Worcestershire closed in on victory after enforcing the follow-on against Derbyshire on day three of the LV=Insurance County Championship match at New Road. The paceman bowled a series of excellent spells from the New Road End and was rewarded with figures of 4 for 44 from 19.4 overs. Club captain Joe Leach, Ed Barnard and Alzarri Joseph all picked up two wickets as Derbyshire were bowled out for 270 – despite a fine unbeaten 81 from Matt Critchley – in reply to Worcestershire’s first innings total of 421.Leach asked the visitors to bat again 151 runs in arrears half an hour before tea and they ran into trouble with Pennington again shining with three wickets as they closed on 112 for 6.Worcestershire’s bowlers were backed up by some razor-sharp catching.Derbyshire resumed in the morning on 91 for 3 and Pennington’s excellent opening spell brought him the wicket of debutant Ben McDermott. The Australian T20I international drove hard at a delivery which he edged to Daryl Mitchell at second slip.Madsen completed his half-century off 127 balls with seven fours but added only one more run before Barnard ended his innings with Mitchell holding onto his second catch of the day.Fynn Hudson-Prentice gave Critchley good support during a sixth wicket stand of 56 in 14 overs. But Leach ended the resistance of Hudson-Prentice on 25 when he mistimed his drive and was caught by Jack Haynes at third slip.Critchley completed a 67-ball half century soon after the resumption when he pulled Leach for his eighth boundary.Pennington came back into the attack and his first delivery saw Alex Hughes caught behind for 25. Joseph trapped Ben Aitchison lbw via a low full toss and then bowled Sam Conners as he backed away to leg.Pennington wrapped up the innings when Dustin Melton was pouched by Fell at first slip – and he was back amongst the wickets when Derbyshire followed on.Cox pulled off a superb one-handed catch low to his right after Pennington found the edge of Brooke Guest’s bat on 7.Leus du Plooy needed 30 balls to get off the mark before collecting two boundaries in an over from Joseph. But he picked up a key wicket when Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman edged another catch – this one head high – to Mitchell.Spin was introduced via Brett D’Oliveira and he enjoyed a success with Du Plooy using his feet but only succeeding in providing a low return catch.Pennington’s sixth wicket of the match came when McDermott looked to work the ball to leg but went leg before. He was then indebted to a spectacular catch by Fell at first slip to dismiss Critchley. It became 93 for 6 when Hudson-Prentice went back to D’Oliveira and chopped onto his stumps

Permanent West Ham deal to sign £34m star is now almost guaranteed – Romano

West Ham United have basically already wrapped up their first major piece of transfer business for 2025, according to popular insider Fabrizio Romano.

West Ham make solid start after busy summer

Tim Steidten certainly earned his money this summer as the Hammers embarked on one of their busiest windows in years, seeing ten new players arrive at the club as a whole host of last year's squad were either sold on or sent out on loan.

The Irons have reaped the rewards of their business so far, despite a hard fought defeat against Manchester City last time out, looking impressive against Crystal Palace – the 'dark horse' pick of many fans and pundits – and seeing new faces like Max Kilman and Aaron Wan-Bissaka shine.

Julen Lopetegui bemoaned self inflicted wounds after the clash against City, but saw plenty of positive signs as his side prepare to take on Fulham at Craven Cottage after the international break: "I think we did really well in the half of the second half, but we didn’t score and when you don’t score against these kinds of teams, they don’t forgive."

He continued: "It was a pity because the players and the team made a big effort today after playing three days in a very tough match against Bournemouth. We were very close to drawing and I think we deserved it in the second half above all, but we didn’t and we have to keep the good things and try to improve the other things."

Hammers closing in on permanent deal for Todibo

While the manager prepares his team for action on the pitch, it seems Steidten and the higher ups are already hard at work preparing for the next transfer windows, with Fabrizio Romano confirming on X this weekend that their first major deal of 2025 is basically already done as they prepare to make Jean-Clair Todibo's loan transfer permanent for a fee of roughly £34m.

The 24 year-old, who was on the brink of signing for Manchester United before the Hammers swooped in, has featured for just seven minutes in the top flight so far, but did get 45 more under his belt in the Carabao Cup outing against Bournemouth. Lopetegui will surely be hoping it's only a matter of time before his newest star is fully fit and firing to form a long-term partnership with the impressive Kilman.
