Left-arm spinner embraces pressure as he prepares for the “ultimate test”
George Dobell01-Feb-2021Jack Leach is promising to “cherish” every moment of the Test series in India despite knowing it represents the “ultimate” challenge.Leach returned to England’s Test team in Sri Lanka after an absence of 14-months during which he has admitted he both feared for his life and his career. As a result, he has a clear sense of perspective about the task in front of him and is determined to “enjoy” every moment.”Having missed so much cricket you have to remember to cherish and enjoy these moments,” Leach said. “It’s my first time in India and to come here and bowl spin is the dream I had. So I just see it as a fantastic opportunity and one I want to enjoy.”It feels really good to be back playing cricket. That is what I get paid to do, so to be playing again is a really nice feeling.”There is pressure all the time when you play for England. In India, there is maybe a bit more pressure with what wickets could be like. India are obviously a great side and they’ve got all bases covered so I wouldn’t want to make too many assumptions. I just know if I can get myself in the right headspace and bowling how I know I can, then I can be effective.”Is it the ultimate test? Yes, I think so. It doesn’t get much more exciting. I think they’re a quality side coming off the back of a great win in Australia. But I feel like it’s a great opportunity to test ourselves against probably the best side in the world. It’s just a great opportunity, isn’t it?Related

Bess, Leach have their work cut out for them in India
Leach admitted he was – understandably – a little “rusty” at times in the Sri Lanka series. But while there were moments his control was not, perhaps, all he would have wanted it to be, he did still end the series with 10 wickets from the two Tests and felt he would be better for the overs he had delivered.”It’s fair to say at times I did feel a little bit rusty,” Leach said. “You can do all you want in the nets but to get back out and play those games has been useful.”I feel like the way the ball came out wasn’t exactly how I would like it. But I have to accept I haven’t had much cricket in recent times and taking wickets in the second innings is always a confidence boost.”I feel good for the cricket and the overs but feel I have more to offer. I am probably someone who is never happy in a way and there is more improvement from me to come. Sri Lanka was a good start and I feel like I am going in the right direction.”Jack Leach made an impact in Sri Lanka’s second innings in Galle•Sri Lanka Cricket
Given that time out of the game, Leach and co. could have done without another six days in quarantine. But he accepted it is the same for both sides and has no complaints.”It is not the ideal prep,” he said, “but it has been the same for India. I have done some reflecting and bowled a few in the mirror. But I’m eager to get back out there tomorrow and get some base training in before the first Test.”The England squad will train together for the first time on this leg of the tour on Tuesday. It is the first of just three training days they have before the start of the first Test on Friday.Part of Leach’s time in quarantine has been spent watching videos of England’s spinners on previous tours. In particular, he has revisited the 2012 series which saw Monty Panesar and Graeme Swann bowl England to a memorable victory. While he cautions against comparisons with Panesar – who bowled a fair bit quicker – he hopes his own left-arm spin can “make an impact.””They are two bowlers I love to watch,” he said. “I watch a lot of spin videos and try to take things for everyone I watch.”Monty bowled an amazing pace. On a spinning wicket, that can be very tricky. I am probably not going to be bowling at the same speeds but it is more about how the ball gets there in terms of trajectory. There have been some very successful bowlers who don’t bowl as fast as Monty.”For me, it is knowing what my optimum pace is and going up and down a little from there. But trying to get as much energy on the ball and deceive them that way. Everyone has an optimum pace and I think it’s important to try and stick to that as much as possible.”I definitely think I can make an impact in the series. I think they’ve got a lot of right-handers so I see that as a good thing for me. I feel I can make a good impression and do good things to that Indian line-up.”

West Ham United have reportedly held talks to sign a new centre-back instead of Jean-Clair Todibo after their agreed deal for the Frenchman fell through.
West Ham transfer rumours
New manager Julen Lopetegui and technical director Tim Steidten have made three signings ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, with teenage winger Luis Guilherme, experienced goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and centre-back Max Kilman all arriving at the London Stadium.
More is wanted ahead of the first game of the Premier League campaign, with a full-back, centre-back and centre-forward all seemingly on the to-do list for Steidten, who promised a busy summer in the market when speaking at Lopetegui’s first press conference as West Ham boss earlier in the month, though. “I can’t tell you specifics, but it will be a busy summer for us for sure. The owner and the board have done a really good job over recent years, so we’re in good shape financially. We’re trying to build up the squad. We’re not limiting ourselves to one position – we’re looking at all areas.”
West Ham ready offer for 23 y/o ace who they agreed terms with last summer
The Hammers are on the hunt for more attacking firepower.
ByTom Coates Jul 29, 2024
In regards to specific targets, Bayern Munich full-back Noussair Mazraoui looked like he could be heading to London before a deal fell through due to an agreement on the player side not being reached. Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka appears to be the priority at right-back, whereas Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran has been the most concrete attacking target.
At centre-back, a transfer was reportedly agreed between West Ham and Nice to sign Todibo earlier this month. The proposal accepted was a loan with the option to make a deal permanent for €36m (£30m), however, the player seemingly has his eye on a move to Juventus. Therefore, a move to West Ham appears to be off, which has resulted in the club looking at alternative targets.
West Ham hold talks to sign Oumar Solet
According to HITC, West Ham have held talks with RB Salzburg over a move to sign Oumar Solet instead of Todibo. The report states that ‘Steidten sees Solet as a genuine option to come in a centre-half after their failure to land Todibo’.
However, it isn’t just the Hammers who are keen on Solet, with Villarreal making an £8m offer to secure his services. The 24-year-old is primarily a centre-back but can also turn out as a holding midfielder if required and is valued at €10m by Transfermarkt.
FC Salzburg's Oumar Solet poses with the trophy after winning the Austrian Soccer Cup
Therefore, a bid around Villarreal’s £8m seems a fair starting point, and it’ll be interesting to see if West Ham make an offer of their own. If they do, Solet could be keen on moving to England, as he admitted last year when linked with Everton and Newcastle that the prospect of playing in the Premier League excites him.
“I have a lot of ambitions, to be honest. I’m just on my way – for sure the Premier League excites me a lot. I feel it’s a league that I can perform in really well and it can bring me to the top. It’s probably the best league in the would. I feel if I have the chance it’s going to help make me become the top player I want to be.
“That’s exactly what I need for the next step. I’m a challenger, a competitor, a winner. I have big ambitions in football and outside football. I want to be a really big player.”

Hasan Ali was Kagiso Rabada’s 200th Test victim•Pakistan Cricket Board
South Africa’s bowlers did not have as much success as they might have wanted on the third morning in Karachi as Pakistan’s tail plundered 70 runs in 12.2 overs, but one of them reached a special, personal milestone. Kagiso Rabada became the third-fastest and fourth-youngest bowler to take 200 Test wickets.Only Waqar Younis (7725) and Dale Steyn (7848) needed fewer deliveries than Rabada (8154) to reach the landmark, while only Waqar, Kapil Dev, and Harbhajan Singh were younger than Rabada’s 25 years and 248 days. Of all of them, Rabada has the best strike rate of 40.8.”It’s a massive feat to be included among a list of such names. When you start playing you don’t ever think you will be on such a list and have such statistics,” Rabada said.He put his consistency at a level this demanding down to diligence and perseverance. “I don’t think there is a magic answer. It’s just hard work and spending time on your craft and seeing where you can get better and analysing it. It hasn’t all been easy.”You find yourself trying to perfect something that might seem so simple but it’s constant repetition and hours and hours of work. It’s being relentless with that and trying to see how much better you can get and finding ways. It’s hard and relentless work.”Rabada’s strike rate is the best among bowlers with minimum 200 test wickets•ESPNcricinfo Ltd
While Rabada has played alongside Steyn, he is yet to share trade secrets with Waqar, who is part of the opposition camp, as bowling coach.Asked if he sought tips from Waqar, Rabada indicated there may be time to pick his brain after the series. “We practised at the same ground but I think it would be a bit concerning if he was coaching me and not the Pakistan team,” Rabada said. “He was a wonderful bowler and someone that I have watched a lot in my spare time, when I am trying to learn about the game, and I would love to chat to him once this is over.”That may be too late to seek advice on how to generate reverse swing in Pakistan but Rabada and Waqar may want to reflect on the difference in conditions in Pakistan over the span of their careers. Rabada’s national coach, Mark Boucher, remembers Pakistan being flat and conditions being ripe for reverse swing in the time of Waqar, while Rabada is experiencing it as spinner-friendly with variable bounce and “not a lot of demons but enough to be concerned about for batsmen”. He however expects spin to play a role on the final two days, when South Africa’s two left-armers, Keshav Maharaj and George Linde, will be key to their attempts to defend a total.South Africa are effectively 29 for 4 and will need to bat well if they are to challenge Pakistan. But Rabada thinks they can still do enough to win the Test match. “That’s what we believe. That’s what we have to believe. Aiden (Markram) and Rassie (van der Dussen) batted extremely well and in the subcontinent wickets can fall in clusters. We are constantly tested and now we are going to get tested again tomorrow. We are up for the challenge. That’s why we practice so hard – for times like these. Hopefully we can get the team in a good position and get some runs on the board so we can set a target.”As things stand, the match is delicately poised after a see-saw first three days, marking an interesting return to the longest format for Rabada. He has not played Test cricket since appearing for South Africa against England in Port Elizabeth last January. In that time he has been part of the IPL and T20I series against England, and he acknowledged that red-ball matches are a complex assessment of a players skills.”Test cricket never gets old and it never gets any easier. You are constantly challenged,” he said. “It’s my first time playing Pakistan. That’s quite amazing. It’s the only place I haven’t played at and I’m glad I could get the opportunity to play here. It’s been hard work, like any Test match, especially in the subcontinent where you have to be a lot more patient. It tests you mentally, it tests you physically. I just got reminded of how Test cricket can impact you.”
Leeds United have less than a month left to finish off the rest of their business in the summer transfer window as they look to build a team that can compete for promotion.
The Whites fell short at the final hurdle last season with a 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Wembley in the play-off final back in May, which has left them to prepare for a second year in the Championship.
That failure to earn promotion back to the Premier League also meant that the West Yorkshire outfit ran the risk of losing some of their best players, which is exactly how it has played out.
Archie Gray has moved to Tottenham Hotspur, Glen Kamara has signed for Ligue 1 side Rennes, and Crysencio Summerville has left to join West Ham United.
Replacing Summerville, in particular, will be an incredibly difficult task for the club over the next few weeks, due to his fantastic performances in the division last term.

As you can see in the table above, the 22-year-old sensation was a constant threat at the top end of the pitch with goals and assists from the left wing.
Leeds in talks to sign Summerville replacement
According to The Telegraph's John Percy, the Whites are already in talks with one of their Championship rivals over a potential deal for a Summerville replacement.
The reporter claims that Leeds are plotting a swoop to sign Norwich City winger Jonathan Rowe, who was on the losing side at Elland Road in the play-offs back in May.
Percy states that the England U21 international is being eyed up as a possible replacement for the Dutch sensation, if they can strike an agreement with the Canaries.
The accompanying article from The Telegraph adds that the Whites are set to make an offer of £7m to sign the winger, who has one year left on his contract at Carrow Road – albeit with an option to extend it by a further season.
Norwich reporter Samuel Seaman backed up Percy's claim that Leeds have made an approach to sign Rowe and are in talks with the Yellows over a move for the winger.
However, the journalist reports that a fee of £7m would "not come close" to being enough to tempt the Canaries into sanctioning an exit for their academy graduate.
If Leeds can get a deal over the line before the end of the window then Rowe could come in as Daniel Farke's own version of former Liverpool star Sadio Mane.
Jonathan Rowe's comparisons to Sadio Mane
Both players are right-footed forwards who can play on either flank and are adept at dribbling and finishing at pace and with either foot, which makes it an easy comparison to make.
However, it is a comparison that talent scout Jacek Kulig made in the summer of 2022, before Rowe had emerged as a key first-team player for Norwich.
Former Liverpool player Sadio Mane
Kulig described the then-teenage winger as a similar player to Mane and hailed him as a perfectly two-footed flanker who reminded him of a young Ousmane Dembele, who is now at Paris Saint-Germain.
Being compared to a player of Mane's quality is a huge compliment to Rowe, as the former Liverpool star was an incredible forward in the Premier League for a number of years.

As you can see in the table above, his last season in the Premier League illustrated his goalscoring prowess at that level from a left wing position.
Overall, Mane plundered 120 goals and 42 assists in 269 appearances for the Reds in all competitions throughout his career at Anfield, which included ten or more goals in all six of his Premier League seasons.
These statistics show that the Senegal international, who now plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, was a prolific scorer who carried a constant threat at the top end of the pitch.
Farke could now land a player who offers similar qualities from a wide position, albeit at Championship level rather than the Champions League, by signing Rowe this summer.
Jonathan Rowe's attacking potential
The England U21 international had always shown promise throughout his youth career in the Norwich academy, hence why Kulig compared him to Mane at such a young age.
He caught the eye at U18 level at Carrow Road with a return of 12 goals and three assists in 31 appearances before his progression up to the U21 team, which led to him plundering 11 goals and seven assists in 31 matches.
His superb performances in the academy convinced Dean Smith to hand him 13 games in the Premier League during the 2021/22 campaign, which also happened to be Mane's last year in the division, and he registered one assist in that time.
Injury issues meant that Rowe only played three times in the Championship the following season but he returned to fitness for the 2023/24 campaign and enjoyed a terrific year, showcasing his quality at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Rowe provided a threat as a goalscorer from a left and right wing position, whilst also chipping in with a couple of assists.
Just like at academy level, the English forward, who scored 13 goals in all competitions, proved that he can score goals at an impressive rate but does not assist goals on a regular basis – just like Mane.
Rowe, whose form was described as "simply amazing" by the aforementioned Kulig, is also a player who would come in with the potential to improve at the age of 21.

Leeds United fans would have accepted the odd departure here or there this summer, knowing that it was a likely outcome that their squad could be picked off bit by bit after not winning promotion to the Premier League.
Yet, with Georginio Rutter now expected to head for the exit door for £40m to move to Brighton and Hove Albion, Daniel Farke's men are set to lose Archie Gray, Crysencio Summerville and their sensational Frenchman all in the space of the same catastrophic transfer window.
This might well have been an easier reality to stomach from the point of view of the Championship promotion challengers if they all moved on gradually over time, but the sudden nature of all of their top talents leaving the building will be a hard one to take if you're an ardent Leeds fan.
The latest on Rutter's future at Leeds
The 2023 signing featured during Leeds' dismal League Cup defeat to Middlesbrough on Wednesday evening but that is likely to be the last we see of him at Elland Road.
Just hours after the game had finished, reports emerged that Brighton had activated Rutter's £40m release clause, an exit fee that was due to expire at midnight on Thursday.
Since then, Farke has all but confirmed the attacker will be on his way out, with the player saying his goodbyes to the club.
Despite this setback, the Whites have bounced back from bigger departures in the past and will strive to do the same here, with Raphinha's exit to Barcelona in 2022 another soul-sapping loss of personnel at the time.
Raphinha's time at Leeds
The entertaining South American attacker would swap Rennes for Leeds before the 2020/21 season, becoming a statement capture after Marcelo Bielsa's Whites had finally returned to the promised land of the Premier League.
He would be an instant success wearing Leeds white, with six goals and nine assists registered during his debut campaign, before taking it up a notch during his second, and final season with 11 goals fired in from 35 games, even as his side tried to keep their heads above water at the foot of the league.
Former Leeds forward Raphinha.
That would signal the end of Raphinha's fleeting, but meaningful, love affair with the West Yorkshire titans, with a bumper move to Barcelona sealed that summer.
The Whites finally suffered relegation without their Brazilian "magician" – as he was labelled by former Leeds teammate Daniel James – when the pair played alongside each other at Elland Road.
Leeds didn't let their star man exit without getting a pretty penny out of the Catalonian giants first, however, with £55m sent the way of his former employers, making him the most expensive sale in the club's history.
Archie Gray's sale of £30m to Tottenham Hotspur this summer feels miniscule in comparison, whilst those at Leeds will be cursing the decision-making of those formerly trusted with overseeing proceedings that allowed a £40m release clause to be placed above Rutter's head, that now sees him set to move away to the Seagulls.
Raphinha's transfer value in 2024
Leeds will hope that they end up winning in terms of the major move, as £40m is still a sizeable amount of money to work with when it comes to luring new incomings through the door.
Moreover, Raphinha has struggled to settle in Spain since exiting Elland Road, so it could be said that the Championship outfit cashed in at the best possible time in that regard, instead of allowing his value to potentially deteriorate if he wasn't let go in his prime.
Therefore, the same could be true for Rutter, who might well be a flash-in-the-pan signing by Brighton, considering his past woes in the division with the Whites.

Finding himself in and out of the Barca first team ranks owing to recurring injury issues last season in LaLiga, Raphinha could now welcome a return back to England according to reports, with Transfermarkt speculating that his valuation for a club to snap him up would still be in the region of £42m.
That's £2m more than what Leeds are managing to get out of Rutter, despite the former TSG 1899 Hoffenheim attacker setting the second alight last campaign with six goals and 15 assists collected from 45 contests.
Leeds will just hope Rutter doesn't go on to become an established top performer moving on up a league, resulting in his value going up and up, way above the £40m that has resulted in the 22-year-old star departing Elland Road prematurely.
Not just Rutter: 4/10 star should never play for Leeds again after Boro
Leeds United fans wouldn’t be too sad to see the back of this dud away from Georginio Rutter’s expected exit.
