Four-match Women's T20 Challenge likely to be held from November 4 to 9

Both the Indian and overseas players will arrive in the UAE by the third week of October

Indian and overseas players will arrive in the UAE by the third week of October for the Women’s T20 challenge•BCCI

The third edition of Women’s T20 Challenge is set to take place between November 4 and 9 in the UAE. The tournament, which the BCCI had said in August would be played during the IPL playoffs’ week, will feature a total of four matches played between three teams.ESPNcricinfo understands that both the Indian and overseas players will arrive in the UAE by the third week of October. All the three squads would be put up at one hotel, which will be part of a bio-secure bubble. Just like the eight IPL franchises, the women’s contingent, too, will undergo a mandatory six-day quarantine at the team hotel during which tests would be carried out on days one, three and five. Once they clear all three tests, they would be allowed to start training. It is understood that the tournament is likely to be preceded by a stipulated number of training sessions, most likely four, for each team, though the BCCI has not made any formal announcements on the tournament, fixtures and the squads’ make-up since August 2.ALSO READ: Covid-19 has made picking WT20C squads challenging – Neetu DavidIn September, the BCCI announced the IPL schedule, but only for the league phase, though the IPL final is slated to be held on November 10.Currently, the Indian board is understood to be finalising the overseas players, and with a new selection panel for the women’s national team now in place, the pool of Indian participants is also close to being confirmed. The T20 Challenge’s clash in scheduling with the WBBL, which begins on October 25, has rendered participation of most top-flight Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa players close to impossible. At least two England stars – Natalie Sciver and Katherine Brunt – would also be missing out on the Indian competition as they have been roped in by the Meg Lanning-led Melbourne Stars for the sixth edition of the Australian domestic T20 tournament. However, representation from England, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka is expected in the T20 Challenge, with several first-time participants likely to feature. Last year, Harmanpreet Kaur’s side Supernovas had defeated the Mithali Raj-led Velocity in Jaipur to win their second straight title, with Smriti Mandhana’s Trailblazers eliminated in the league stage.

Arsenal could sign Odegaard 2.0 in £51m Euro 2024 star

Whether Arsenal get their hands on a marquee striker this summer remains to be seen, but what is sure is that the Gunners aren't just going to be sitting around twiddling their thumbs over the next few months.

Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar have a big task on their hands: bringing in the right players to help the North Londoners take that final step and overtake Manchester City in the Premier League.

What better place to scout said players than the European Championships?

So, it's unsurprising that one of the latest names touted for a move to N5 could be a star at the tournament, and interestingly, he shares a lot of similarities with club captain Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a report from Caught Offside earlier this week, Arsenal are one of several sides interested in Paris Saint-Germain's young star Xavi Simons and have already contacted the French side to learn more.

Xavi Simons for RB Leipzig

Alongside the Gunners, the report claimed that Manchester United, Manchester City, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus have also made contact with the Parisians over the young player, valued at around €60m – £51m – per Spanish reports last month.

However, unlike United, for example, the North Londoners have inquired about taking the 21-year-old on a season-long loan, which makes sense considering L'Équipe's report last week that Luis Enrique's side weren't keen to sell him this summer due to a clause that would see them pay a large portion of the fee to PSV.

It looks set to be an intense battle between multiple clubs to land the Dutchman's services this summer, but given his incredible form and similarities to Odegaard, Edu and Co must do what they can to emerge victorious.

Simons' similarities to Odegaard

Now, as impressive as Simons has been over the last couple of seasons, he has yet to prove himself at a major club or in a senior leadership role, so to compare him to Odegaard, a captain at club and international level, is a lot, but there are a few reasons why it makes sense.

xavi-simons-arsenal-transfer-news-premier-league

The first is that, despite his age, the Dutchman has been on the radar of major football clubs for years at this point and was courting attention as the next big thing when he was a child in Barcelona's La Masia, which led to his move to PSG at just 16 years old.

This scenario is remarkably similar to the Norwegian's journey, as he emerged as the next wonderkid in his home country before securing a much-publicised move to Real Madrid in 2015, also at just 16 years old.

Moreover, like the Gunners' ace, the Amsterdam-born "superstar", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, then had to leave the super club he signed in order to play, and now it looks like he could join the North Londoners on an initial loan deal to get even more game time, which is exactly what happened with the Drammen-born star in January 2021.

The final similarity is that the pair are both positionally versatile.

The Gunners' mercurial captain may start the vast majority of his games in attacking midfield nowadays, but he's started 82 games as a right-winger in his career, 49 games in central midfield, 13 games on the left wing, and eight on the right of midfield.

Likewise, the 21-year-old, whom Mattinson claims is "destined for greatness", has started 43 games on the left wing, 28 on the right, 26 in attacking midfield, ten as a centre-forward, and five in central midfield, which also suggests that Arteta would have no trouble fitting the exceptional talent into a team alongside the Norwegian.

Ultimately, while there is plenty of competition to land Simons' signature this summer, his impressive form for Leipzig last season – where he racked up 25 goals and assists in 43 games – and his similarities to Odegaard make him a player worth fighting for.

Who knows, Edu and Co may be able to turn his loan move into a permanent one like they did with the former Real ace.

Club mulling visit to Lahore to prepare for 2021 season after revelations England may travel to the country

Pakistan’s reputation as open for business looks set to take another step forward with news that at least a couple of England’s first-class counties are considering the country as an option for their pre-season tours.Days after ESPNcricinfo revealed that England are considering a short tour to the country in January, it has emerged that Warwickshire are considering visiting Lahore as part of their preparations for the 2021 domestic season.ALSO READ: ECB confirms plans to undertake first tour of Pakistan in more than 15 yearsESPNcricinfo understands the club have held talks with Pakistan CEO, Wasim Khan, with a view to sending the entire first team squad to the country in March. Wasim, a former Warwickshire player, is believed to have guaranteed good quality training facilities and opposition. If the tour goes ahead, it seems likely the side will be based at Aitchison College. Two senior Warwickshire players, Will Rhodes, the club captain, and Oliver Hannon-Dalby, went on the MCC’s tour to Pakistan in February, which was also based at Aitchison College. Both enjoyed the experience and have given positive reports about the facilities on offer.A final decision will not be made until the club are satisfied that the tour is safe in terms of both security and Covid-19. Finances could also be an issue, with the club also understood to be considering La Manga, in Spain, as a pre-season option.Either way, the fact that Pakistan is being considered for such visits is a sure sign of progress. England have not visited the country since late 2005 due to security concerns.

Celtic star benched, no Adams: Scotland predicted lineup vs Hungary

Scotland ensured their Euro 2024 campaign is still alive after securing a draw against Switzerland in their second group match of the competition.

Truth be told, they should have gone for the jugular during the final 20 minutes, rather than play it safe and take the point which keeps them alive.

Steve Clarke for Scotland.

Now, Steve Clarke’s men have to beat Hungary on Sunday evening to finish on four points, which should be enough to be one of the four best third-place nations.

The performance was like night and day compared to the 5-1 hammering against Germany on the opening night, as Clarke brought the likes of Billy Gilmour into the starting XI.

Grant Hanley struck the post towards the end of the game on Wednesday in Cologne and now all eyes turn to Sunday.

The manager could make a few changes ahead of the must-win clash, and here's how they could line up…

1 GK – Angus Gunn

After conceding five against the Germans last Friday, Gunn retained his place in the starting visit for the midweek clash and delivered a more confident display.

He may have conceded again, yet you doubt anyone would have saved Xherdan Shaqiri’s wonder strike which gave the Swiss a point.

The Norwich City goalkeeper made two tremendous saves to keep the country in with a chance of reaching the last 16, and he could be crucial against the Hungarians.

2 RB – Ross McCrorie

Ross McCrorie

Anthony Ralston was deployed as a right-wing back on Wednesday evening and his misplaced pass enabled Shaqiri to score the leveller on the night.

Throughout the game, the Celtic defender completed just 57% of his attempted passes, delivered only two accurate crosses and lost possession a staggering 17 times, which means he should be dropped from the starting XI.

Kieran Tierney was stretched off and will miss the final group game, which could give Clarke a licence to unleash McCrorie from the start.

He played his entire club season at right-back for Bristol City last term, and it is clear a change is needed in the problematic position.

3 CB – Scott McKenna

Scotland defender Scott McKenna in action.

The defender came on for the injured Tierney midway through the first half against the Swiss, but he should be starting the match tonight.

The 6 foot 2 titan looked composed when he came on and could offer Clarke something different at the heart of the defence, especially as Ryan Porteous is still suspended.

Keeping a clean sheet will make Scotland’s job all that much easier against Hungary.

4 CB – Grant Hanley

Grant Hanley

Hanley is the most experienced centre-back in the squad with 51 caps for his country since 2011 and this will be required in the must-win clash this evening.

The centre-back came so close to securing a much-needed win when his header rattled off the post during the final quarter of the game on Wednesday, a mere two inches from glory.

A defensive duo consisting of him and McKenna should be what Clarke goes for against the Hungarians.

5 LB – Andy Robertson

calum-scanlon-andy-robertson-liverpool-opinion

The captain enjoyed a better game in midweek. Not only did he make three key passes, but the Liverpool star also delivered four accurate crosses, won three of his five duels and created a big chance.

More of the same against Hungary, please skipper.

6 CM – Callum McGregor

Callum McGregor

The Celtic captain also enjoyed a greater display compared to the Germany match. Indeed, operating in the centre of the midfield, McGregor not only assisted Scott McTominay’s opener, but he also finished the match with a 94% pass success rate and made two key passes.

Goals will be needed against Hungary. Can McGregor help set up another one or two more efforts which could see Scotland through to the knockout stage?

7 CM – Billy Gilmour

A surprise omission from the starting XI against Germany last week, Gilmour showed exactly what he can offer Clarke during the draw against Switzerland.

The midfielder won three of his four contested duels, lost possession only eight times, took 51 touches and completed 33 of his 39 passes during the match before being replaced by Kenny McLean.

He could give Scotland that something extra tonight if slotted into the heart of the midfield, and he must take inspiration from his recent impressive showing.

8 CM – Ryan Christie

While he may have started in a more advanced role earlier in the tournament, Christie featured slightly deeper for Bournemouth during the 2023/24 campaign, which saw him score once and register five assists in all competitions.

Dropping the former Aberdeen gem into a withdrawn role could allow Clarke the licence to unleash both McTominay and John McGinn as attacking midfielders.

9 AM – John McGinn

The Aston Villa star has scored 18 goals in 68 international matches for Scotland, just 12 shy of the all-time record held by Denis Law and Kenny Dalgleish.

A goal against Hungary would be the ideal chance to move to 19 efforts for his country.

10 AM – Scott McTominay

In 14 appearances for his country since the start of 2023, McTominay has scored eight goals, a sublime return for a midfielder.

His seven goals in the Euro 2024 qualifiers meant he finished joint-fourth in the standings, just three goals behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

His goal against Switzerland means Clarke must push him into a more advanced role just behind the striker, especially as his confidence will be high after becoming just the second male player to score for Scotland in a major international tournament this century.

Should he find the back of the net again this evening, McTominay’s standing among the tartan army will reach unprecedented levels, no doubt about it.

Fleming says rebuilding Super Kings will be 'great fun'

Head coach also explains why Gaikwad wasn’t picked sooner and why Tahir played only three games all season

The Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab players greet each other after the game•BCCI

Chennai Super Kings have had their worst season, failing to qualify for the playoffs for the first time in the 11 years they’ve been part of the IPL. When the Super Kings stumbled with the bat and fumbled in the field in the first half of the season, the usually unflappable Stephen Fleming was visibly frustrated. After the Super Kings gave up five wickets inside the powerplay and eventually lost to Mumbai Indians in Sharjah he said that the ageing side had “run out of juice”.Fleming has overseen the rebuilding of the Melbourne Stars in the BBL and the building of Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL, but would the impending transition at Super Kings be his toughest challenge as a T20 coach?”It’s a great challenge,” Fleming said at the post-match press conference after the Super Kings finished their season with three successive wins. ” It’s great fun and there’s responsibility around it, but when you get the likes of Ruturaj [Gaikwad] come through and some of the players getting the mix of youth and old…”Fleming looked back at the past to plan for the future, hoping to establish a strong core like how the team management had done in 2008. MS Dhoni, who was the most expensive buy at that inaugural auction, has also confirmed that he’s “definitely not” retiring before the next IPL.”We go back to the same team which Mr. Srinivasan and CSK picked and how right they got it,” Fleming said. “We’re looking to do the same if we can get a decade of consistent cricket from a side, you’re doing something right. So, we’re tapping into that and yeah there’s big responsibility. Teams now and squads are a lot smarter and they really want what they want, so talent is at a premium. But, it’s one of the challenges… good and exciting challenges of being involved with an IPL side.”The 23-year old Gaikwad, who peeled off three fifies in a row, is a “big candidate” for the Super Kings going forward. When asked if the team management could’ve found room for him at the top in the first half of the season, Fleming reckoned that they had actually rushed him into action too early after he had recovered from Covid-19.After an extended quarantine period, Gaikwad returned to training on September 21. On the very next day, he made his IPL debut against Rajasthan Royals and bagged a duck at No.5. Three days later, against the Delhi Capitals, he managed 5 at No. 4 before being dropped from the XI.Ruturaj Gaikwad reached his third successive half-century•BCCI

“No, we couldn’t play him earlier, in fact we played him too early,” Fleming said. “Covid really knocked him around, we knew how good he was from the time we’ve had in the last two years; the pre-season [camp] in Chennai was outstanding. One of the disappointments was obviously he got sick and the fact that it hung around for so long, people underestimated what it does to a player physically and mentally.”We tried to get him into the game really early on, looking back probably it was too soon, so it wasn’t effective. We might have pushed him in too quickly and he wasn’t quite ready physically and he got outweighed a little bit – some doubts were cast and just got to work with him in net practice and limited practice matches, but we always had in mind he was going to be a key player.”On Sunday, it was Imran Tahir and Lungi Ngidi who had set up the Super Kings’ nine-wicket win by restricting Kings XI Punjab to 153 for 6. Tahir, who was the top wicket-taker last season, got only three games in IPL 2020 for one wicket. Fleming explained that since the batting line-up was brittle, in the absence of Suresh Raina, they needed overseas cover on that front and had to rely on the Indian bowlers to do the job.”We had Josh Hazlewood also in limited games, but what we were in trouble is that we were without our Indian batters, we had to fill those gaps with international players,” Fleming said. Whilst you’d like to play all your internationals, you having to fill a gap at the top of the order [means] it puts a squeeze somewhere else.”So, we had to rely on Indian seamers and only one sort of overseas bowler at a time. It wasn’t like we didn’t want to play them. When you have one of the best T20 bowlers in the world sitting on the sidelines, it hurts me just as much as some of the experts saying why is he not playing. But, they have to think deeper than that as to what’s going on with the balance of the side and that’s one of the great challenges of selecting each side when you’ve got so much talent on the bench.”Fleming was also pleased with how the Super Kings bounced back, after a terrible start, to offer hope for the future.”We hung tough as a group,” he said. “Obviously in the bubble we spent a lot of time together and when things aren’t going well in the IPL, it can get a bit toxic. But the players – every one of them – were incredibly committed to what we were trying to do. Some were getting opportunities and some weren’t which again is the nature of the IPL. [That] we were finishing on an up is a testament to the players more than anything that they were still committed to respecting the jersey and franchise and finished the tournament well so that we can look back and say ‘what if’ rather than ‘what next’. We’ve got too many fans as well relying on us to do well and we have an obligation to do that. The players were in a good enough space and tough to repay that.”
