Sri Lanka batsman cleared of driving under the influence by preliminary police investigations

Kusal Mendis has been released on bail a day after he was arrested for his role in a fatal motor accident in Panadura, just south of Colombo. Mendis, who was driving the SUV that hit and killed a 64-year-old cyclist at around 5am on Sunday, has also been cleared of driving under the influence by preliminary police investigations and a judicial medical officer.Mendis, 25, is understood to have been returning from the wedding of a Sri Lanka Cricket employee when the accident took place. Fellow Sri Lanka cricketer Avishka Fernando is also understood to have been on board the car, with Mendis acting as designated driver for the group.CCTV footage suggests the vehicle had veered off the road and into a garden wall, hitting the victim – a local resident – in the process. The victim had sustained substantial injuries and died in the process of being admitted to Panadura hospital.After being detained at the Panadura police station overnight near where the accident occurred, Mendis was produced before the Panadura Magistrate’s Court and released on two personal bails of Sri Lankan rupees 1 million ($5400 approx.) each. He is due to appear in court again on September 9.As Sri Lanka’s lockdowns and curfew have now ceased, Mendis was allowed to be on the road at the time. He had been part of Sri Lanka’s residential training camp in Pallekele, which ended on Wednesday.

وقالت رابطة الدوري الألماني: “المصري كان اللاعب المتميز في المباراة، ولم يكتفِ المهاجم بتسجيل هدفين، بل كان أخطر المهاجمين بإجمالي سبع تسديدات على المرمى، وهذه هي الثنائية الرابعة لمرموش هذا الموسم”.

ويستعد آينتراخت فرانكفورت لمباراة لايبزيج، يوم الأربعاء المقبل، في إطار منافسات دور الـ16 من بطولة كأس ألمانيا.

Speaking to Sky Sports recently, Leeds chairman Paraag Marathe said there are "going" to be some departures.

“We are well capitalised from an investment standpoint. We have the funds that we need to do what we need to do. The reality of being in the Championship is that Profitability and Sustainability (P&S) plays a role. We also inherited a challenging situation, so naturally there are going to be some trade-offs. But also, we have a really good team, and it is not just about outs, but ins. We're looking at scouting possibilities and players that we can bring in. We will have to make some trade-offs because of P&S but we have the investment commitment to do what we need to do.”

Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto have already been linked with Elland Road exits, but when it specifically came to Gray’s future, Marathe added:

“It's a little too early to answer specific questions. I can't talk on specific players right now. If I can paint the big picture for you, there are certain things we need to do and we will make sure we are fully compliant with P&S as we always have been, and there are certain trade-offs that we have to make. We will get to the drawing board and figure out which moves we have to make to make sure we are compliant. It is too early to say, obviously Archie is a tremendous player, as all the players who have put so much effort in for us, but every season brings change. I can't yet comment on it, but we'll see what happens.”

However, it looks as if one European giant is already planning their move for the 18-year-old.

Bayern Munich readying Archie Gray move

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Bayern Munich are “ready” to test Leeds’ resolve over Gray this summer, with Premier League giants Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd also keen should the teenager be available for transfer.

Within his report for HITC, Bailey adds that the Bundesliga giants are ready to try their luck when it comes to moving for Gray under incoming manager Vincent Kompany.

Gray enjoyed a phenomenal breakthrough campaign with his boyhood club, winning the EFL Young Player of the Year award and featuring regularly under Daniel Farke.

He eventually went on to make the right-back spot his own after beginning the season in his more natural midfield role, appearing 52 times in all competitions. Leeds will be hoping that it is not 52 and out, but by the looks of things, they could soon receive contact from Bayern and potentially other sides.

Dawid Malan scored a superb unbeaten maiden Yorkshire century in challenging conditions as the hosts had much the better of day one against fellow Bob Willis Trophy challengers Derbyshire at Emerald Headingley.Both sides have won their opening two North Group games, with Derby leading the race for top spot by four points.However, the visitors, missing the experience of Luis Reece, Ravi Rampaul and Tony Palladino, were unable to capitalise on a couple of openings having won the toss and elected to bowl under slate grey skies.Yorkshire fell to 40 for 2 and 106 for 4 either side of lunch before closing on 280 for 4 from 78 overs.Malan finished on 145 not out from 180 balls and Jonny Tattersall unbeaten on 64 from 142. Bad light ended play early.Fluent Malan’s England team-mate Jonny Bairstow – this will be their last four-day group appearance if they win national limited-overs selection for series against Pakistan and Australia – made 22 having been dropped on nought.The feature of Malan’s knock was his dominant driving – both through the covers and down the ground. He shared a third-wicket partnership of 66 with Adam Lyth from mid-morning to early afternoon and then an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 174 inside 44 overs with a quieter Tattersall.This is the England left-hander’s competitive home debut for the White Rose following his winter move from Middlesex. He reached his fifty off 87 balls and then his century off 136, by which time Yorkshire had gone beyond 200 for a first batting bonus point.The century stand between Malan and Tattersall – playing as a specialist batsman with Bairstow taking the wicketkeeping gloves – had also been confirmed. Tattersall’s innings was understated but a crucial foil for Malan, who later lofted Matt Critchley for six over long-off.Tattersall worked the ball well on the way to a 122-ball fifty and will hope to convert to a maiden first-class century against county opposition.

Leeds' failure to secure promotion back to the Premier League is expected to have some impact on their transfer business. On the outgoing front, Wilfried Gnonto is said to be pushing to leave Leeds and wants a transfer to the Serie A. Elsewhere, there has been heavy interest in Crysencio Summerville, who has been linked with Liverpool. Finally, midfielder Archie Gray is said to be of interest to German powerhouse, Bayern Munich.

As well as potentially losing some of their key stars, Leeds are unlikely to be able to target some players they were perhaps looking at earlier this year, including Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha. Instead, their focus has seemingly been on smaller names who would not cost as much.

Leeds are one of a number of clubs keen on a possible swoop to sign Stade Brestois attacker Karamoko Dembele. They are also believed to be interested in the services of Stuttgart winger Silas Katompa Mvumpa. Furthermore, The Whites are one of the clubs lining up a swoop to sign FC St. Pauli central defender Eric Smith as a potential replacement for Tottenham star Joe Rodon.

Now, another potential budget signing has been linked with a move to Elland Road. The player in question is Natan Girma, who is currently plying his trade in the Serie B with Reggiana.

Grima joined Reggiana on a free transfer from Sona in July of 2023. Despite only spending one season at his current club, the attacking midfielder has seen his market value rise 7,500% from €10,000 to €750,000. Grima made 26 league appearances across 2023/24, scoring five and assisting three as Reggiana secured an 11th-place finish.

The 22-year-old remains under contract with his current side until 2027, with the option of a further year, but reports emerging in Italy suggest a move to England could be on the cards. It is stated that Reggiana do not want to part ways with the midfielder but they could be forced to do so if the right offer came in.

On this front, offers lower than £2.5m will reportedly not be looked at. However, given his staggering market value increase in just one year, £2.5m+ still seems a serious bargain for any potentially interested club. His current trajectory looks to be one of a player on the rise, so that fee could look like a bargain in a few years.

Italian side Monza are understood to be keen on Grima but the report from Italy also mentions Leeds and Watford have been in contact with the player's camp to ask for information.
