VAR ANULA GOL DO GABIGOL

Porém, a decisão mudou.

Neymar, contudo, cobrou fraquinho e o goleiro Domínguez defendeu.

Alex Carey 'nipping at the heels' of Tim Paine – Adam Gilchrist

The former wicketkeeper, who feels Paine’s future as Test captain is in his own hands, lauded him for helping reshape the team after the ball-tampering scandal

Alex Carey is “nipping at the heels” of Tim Paine but the future of Australia’s Test captain remains in his own hands, according to Adam Gilchrist. It is not beyond the realms that the New Zealand series, which starts in Perth on Thursday, marks Paine’s last home internationals. After the Sydney Test in early January, Australia’s next assignment is a two-match series in Bangladesh in June before the next home summer.Steven Smith’s leadership ban will be completed at the end of March which means he will be eligible for a return to captaincy, and Gilchrist picked out him and Pat Cummins as potential options to replace Paine. The upturn in Australia’s Test form this year has cemented Paine’s position and it appears unlikely he will be pushed out, but having turned 35 a few days ago there may also come a time when he feels it is time to move on.From a batting point of view, Carey has made 143 and 73 in his last two Sheffield Shield outings and is the natural successor to Paine. It is a position Gilchrist has first-hand experience of, having been the man who replaced Ian Healy in 1999.”I reckon while ever he is in the team he should be captain,” Gilchrist, who is a commentator, said. “And then let’s see after these three Tests – that is the summer for him. See how he feels at the end of this summer. I feel it was more of a light-hearted comment when he said it might be his last summer. But like all players that are getting to that age bracket, it’s almost a summer-by-summer analysis.”It’s almost like deja vu – not for him, but for me – when you’ve got a guy like Alex Carey nipping at his heels. He’s starting to show some really promising signs of consistency now in his Sheffield Shield cricket. With his overall game and where the attention gets drawn to is his run-scoring. His wicketkeeping seems to be extremely consistent. As is Paine’s. But Carey is now starting to really accumulate important runs in first-class cricket, so that is going to really put pressure on him.”If he is playing next summer, Paine should be captain of the Australian cricket team. But we will have to see at the end of the summer if he is still in there – whether it’s his own personal judgement or the selectors’. As long as he warrants a spot in the team, he can keep leading the team. I’m amazed at the way he has helped rebuild and reshape the team after the disaster of South Africa.”Tim Paine with Steven Smith at training•AFP

Though Paine’s Test average remains a modest 30.97 (he has barely been needed so far this summer with the prolific returns of Australia’s top order), Gilchrist believes he has a significant innings him should Australia need it.”Tim’s chipped in with some really important innings,” Gilchrist said. “He hasn’t got the breakthrough runs but he plays a decent role with the bat. I’d be surprised if in this series there’s not a time when we’re under pressure whether it’s a 40, 50 or a 70 that he plays his role. He’s so experienced he can fulfill that. The only time the attention is drawn to him is if someone else is breathing down his neck that they may be able to add value.”From Paine’s point of view, he said he had not given his future any more thought since the start of the international season. “In terms of competition, when you are playing for Australia as the wicketkeeper, there’s constant competition,” he said. “We are renowned for having excellent wicketkeeper-batsmen and that’s no different at the moment. As I touched on, it’s a great environment in our set-up and I’m enjoying every minute of it and will continue to do so as long as I can.”

It could be August 2025 before Spurs fans see 20 y/o play for Ange again

Now near the end of Ange Postecoglou's first season in charge, Tottenham Hotspur can reflect on the positives more than the few negatives, with plenty more to come from the Australian. One forgotten man could be forced to wait another season before playing his part under the Spurs boss, however.

Tottenham transfer news

Credit where it's due, Spurs have backed Postecoglou on the most part since the sale of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich last summer. The likes of James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Micky van de Ven have all arrived to hand the Lilywhites a welcomed boost this season. Now, in his second summer in charge, Postecoglou could receive similar backing.

Tottenham chiefs "ready" to shop for "extraordinary" breakout Serie A star

The Lilywhites are set to return to an old stomping ground for the deal.

ByBen Browning Apr 3, 2024

It remains to be seen just who will be walking through the door, but reports have at least given those in North London some clues. Players such as Brentford's Ivan Toney and Alexander Isak have both been linked with moves to the Lilywhites ahead of the summer, with a clear emphasis on finally landing an out and out replacement for Kane.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

Meanwhile, away from the incomings, Postecoglou could be set to show the door to certain players too, if just on a temporary basis. According to Spanish journalist Uriel Lugt, Alejo Veliz could be heading out on loan once again this summer, having spent the second half of the current campaign on loan at La Liga side Sevilla. This means that the forward could be forced to wait until August 2025 to play for Spurs again after arriving last summer.

The Argentine may at least get his first real taste of Premier League action next season, however, with Bournemouth reportedly attentive to his situation. Given that the Cherries could be forced to replace the Spurs-linked Dominic Solanke this summer, Veliz represents an ideal option. It's certainly a deal that would suit all parties, offering Spurs the chance to see their youngster in regular top flight action.

"Promising" Veliz must have patience

Whilst it's undoubtedly a frustrating wait for his Spurs chance, Veliz must take the mentality that his opportunity will eventually arrive when he is ready. Admittedly, however, his Sevilla loan spell has hardly helped speed things up, having made just three appearances in La Liga and not a single start for the Spanish side.

If it is to be Bournemouth next season, then game time is a must for the 20-year-old, who cannot afford another season away from North London just to sit on the bench. Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig will be among those frustrated by Veliz's lack of opportunities, having detailed his talent before his move to Spurs last summer.

As Spurs look to finally replace Kane this summer, the hope will be that Veliz kicks on away from the club to eventually emerge as a far more ideal candidate to fill the boots of the Lilywhites legend.

Angelo Mathews and Sean Williams in focus as Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka resume a strange rivalry

Zimbabwe are in such flux that Sri Lanka go into the series as favourites, despite consistency issues in both departments

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando18-Jan-2020

Angelo Mathews lays into a pull•Getty Images

Big PictureThe last time these two teams met, Zimbabwe gave Sri Lanka an almighty scare. Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza struck hundreds, captain Graeme Cremer took nine wickets, and Sri Lanka were made to chase 388 for victory at Khettarama. Had a very tight stumping decision gone Zimbabwe’s way in the back end of that chase, the visitors would have been headed towards an upset. Earlier on that tour, Zimbabwe had won the ODI series. It’s been only a little over two years since those series, but how much has changed. The optimism that Zimbabwe ended that tour with has not just dissipated in the time since, it has been replaced by gloom. Having been suspended from full-member rights for a large chunk of 2019, Zimbabwe Cricket has had to put a domestic tournament on hold, pending further funding from the ICC.On the player front, Cremer is not even in the team, having put his career on hold to move to Dubai with his family, while Hamilton Masakadza has retired and swiftly become Zimbabwe’s director of cricket. PJ Moor – one of the best players from that Khettarama game – has been overlooked for the squad as well. In fact, where that old Zimbabwe squad had a little experience about it, the one that has been named for this series features five players who are uncapped in Tests. It’s a strange series in which Sri Lanka actually appear to have the more stable outfit. Yes, it is Dimuth Karunaratne leading the Test team now, when it had been Dinesh Chandimal at these teams’ last meeting. But at least Chandimal still finds a place in the XI. Having named their strongest squad, Sri Lanka have serious experience on their side, particularly in Angelo Mathews and Suranga Lakmal, who returns after having missed the entire Pakistan series. The visitors go in as favourites, but they are far from unbeatable. There are huge questions over Dilruwan Perera’s ability to lead the spin attack after he went wicketless in Pakistan. The top order has shown flashes of brilliance, but is in no way a consistent or cohesive unit. There are plenty of cricketers playing for their spot, which of course opens up opportunities for Zimbabwe.Form guideZimbabwe LWLDL (completed matches, most recent first)
Sri Lanka LDLWWIn the spotlightThe last time Zimbabwe won a Test, in late 2018, Sean Williams’ first-innings 88 had led them to 282 in Sylhet – a total that proved decisive on that surface, where each of the three other innings fell short of 200. His left-arm spin has also been helpful, such as against West Indies in Bulawayo, the previous year. Now, as he prepares to captain his first Test, he has the likes of Brendan Taylor, Raza and Ervine to call upon for support, but if he can make his own individual mark on the series, it may help a side playing their first Test in over a year rally behind him, and spark a little of that hope they found in their last encounters with Sri Lanka.Sean Williams crunches one through the off side•AFP

In September 2015, Angelo Mathews’ batting average was a touch above 52, and he was easily one of the best players in the world. At the start of 2020, his average is 43.87, the lowest it’s been in at least six years. Injuries have plagued him, yes, but even those can’t quite account for how he is now merely a good player, when once he was headed toward “great” status. Although it seems as if he’s been around forever, Mathews is only 32 – the kind of age at which many batsmen come into their most prolific years. In the last few months, he has also dropped a lot of the weight he carried through the last few years and suddenly seems as fit as he’s ever been. Can Mathews recapture the form of old? With a challenging year ahead, Sri Lanka are desperate for someone to lead the middle order as he once did.Team newsOpener Kevin Kasuza, who has been in decent domestic form for Mountaineers, could be in line for a Test debut. He could be partnered by Rhinos opener Prince Masvaure. Seam bowler Victor Nyauchi is one of several bowlers who could debut, with Tendai Chatara out of the series with a bicep injury. Left-arm spinner Ainsley Ndlovu is uncapped in Tests as well, and could get a run, if Zimbabwe feel they need a specialist spinner in addition to Raza and Williams.Zimbabwe(possible): 1 Kevin Kasuza, 2 Prince Masvaure, 3 Brendan Taylor, 4 Craig Ervine, 5 Sean Williams (capt.), 6 Sikandar Raza, 7 Regis Chakabva (wk), 8 Donald Tiripano, 9 Victor Nyauchi, 10 Kyle Jarvis, 11 Ainsley NdlovuSri Lanka’s top order should be fairly settled – Lahiru Thirimanne the likeliest to sit out. Lahiru Kumara and Lakmal will most likely share the new ball, while Dilruwan and Lasith Embuldeniya will probably be the frontline spin options.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne (capt.), 2 Oshada Fernando, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Angelo Mathews, 5 Dinesh Chandimal, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 8 Dilruwan Perera, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Lasith Embuldeniya, 11 Lahiru KumaraPitch and conditionsThere’s rain scheduled for the first half of Saturday, with showers predicted for Monday and Tuesday as well. The Harare Sports Club surface is generally good for batting in the first innings.Stats and trivia Zimbabwe have lost five matches and drawn five at home against Sri Lanka. The most recent of those draws, though, was all the way back in 1999. Their last two matches at the Harare Sports Club against Sri Lanka have ended in 225-run and 257-run defeats. Ervine needs 59 more runs to complete 1000 in Tests. His highest score was the 160 at Khettarama in 2017. Mathews has averaged less than 30 with the bat in three of the last four calendar years.

Several offers made for £21.6m Tottenham star as deal reaches serious stage

A club has made "several offers" to sign one member of Ange Postecoglou's squad at Tottenham, and it is believed the potential deal has reached a "serious stage".

Spurs chiefs preparing for mass summer sales

The Lilywhites will have many players up for sale this summer as chairman Daniel Levy seeks to balance the books and garner funds for Spurs' own transfer activity.

The north Londoners will be without one of Postecoglou’s key players for the rest of 23/24.

According to recent reports, as many as five senior Tottenham players who are described as certainties for the exit door, with Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, Bryan Gil, Joe Rodon and Sergio Reguilon the men who seem set to depart this summer.

Ndombele hasn't exactly set the world alight on another loan spell away from N17, starting just four Turkish Süper Lig games at Galatasaray over 2023/2024, while it is believed Reguilon also isn't in Postecoglou's plans moving forward.

Rodon has actually impressed during his time at Leeds United in the Championship, so much so that the Yorkshire side are rumoured to be very keen on making him an Elland Road player permanently.

Gil, meanwhile, is attracting very serious interest from Feyenoord – which has now been confirmed by their club director Dennis to Kloese.

"The fact that we are in the race for Gil has been the case for several transfer windows," Te Kloese told Rotterdam daily Algemeen Dagblad (via Standard Sport).

"We are looking again at what is possible. We offer a fantastic platform to give boys a good continuation of their career. Or to show themselves again. Gil is a good player, but there are many more clubs that are looking at that boy."

Arne Slot's side apparently attempted to strike a deal for Gil in January as well, but to no avail. The Spaniard elected to remain in north London to battle for a place in Postecoglou's starting eleven, a decision which hasn't exactly been rewarded with many opportunities.

Gil has started just two league games all season, playing a total of 191 minutes, and he's in real danger of becoming a forgotten man.

Feyenoord make "several offers" for Gil with deal at "serious stage"

Now, according to 1908.nl, the Eredivisie side are determined to offer him a way out. Indeed, Feyenoord have made "several offers" to sign Gil "doing a lot" to seal a move. The Dutch outfit are "not letting go" to the idea of brining him and "clinging" to a possible deal, which is now thought to be at a "serious stage".

Bryan Gil in action for Tottenham.

Signed for around £21.6 million with Erik Lamela going the other way to Sevilla in 2021, Gil arrived at Spurs with a lot of promise, but things haven't quite gone to plan. Perhaps the physicality of English football has proved too difficult to adapt to, but it's undeniable the 23-year-old possesses certain quality on his day.

David Cartlidge is among the media members to brand Gil a "very, very exciting" player, so it will be interesting to see what the future holds for him.

Rangers have a "concrete" interest in signing a young star this summer, but may have to battle off Premier League interest to make it happen.

Rangers relying on Celtic slip up

A poor few weeks has left Rangers needing Celtic to slip up to find a way back into the Scottish Premiership race between now and the end of the campaign.

Trailing their rivals by three points and with an inferior goal difference, Philippe Clement's side could win at Celtic Park in the next Old Firm derby and still need Celtic to either drop points or suffer a heavy loss in the final games of the season.

Rangers join race for teenager

Now, fresh reports have linked Rangers with a move for teenage sensation Ethan Sutherland, who has been wowing fans in Scotland's League One. In search of first team action, Sutherland left Premiership St Mirren in January for Alloa, and has impressed in Scotland's second tier.

Though still just 17-years-old, Sutherland has played a variety of roles for Alloa already. Of his 14 appearances since January, eight have come as a left-back, while just three have come in his more natural left-wing position. He has also played at both right back (1) and right midfield (1).

During this time, he has managed to rack up an impressive two goals and six assists, and has attracted the attention of both Chelsea and Manchester City for his performances. He is very highly rated at St Mirren, with Stephen Robinson revealing that though he wasn't ready for the first team just yet, he is a "real prospect".

"We think Ethan is a real prospect, but what he lacks is experience, a mentality and a determination when things go wrong," Robinson explained in January.

Rangers should be making their move for a midfielder who is out of contract this summer…

ByRoss Kilvington Apr 25, 2024

"The only way you do that is when you are playing games. He’s not ready for the first team but going on loan will be the best for his development."

But he has just a year left on his current deal with the Scottish side, and that has attracted interest from other clubs with Rangers the latest to show their appreciation.

As per Football Insider, Philippe Clement's side have a "strong" and "concrete" interest in signing the winger this summer. Though the Premier League interest may prove problematic, they add that Rangers will "be hoping he would prefer to remain in Scotland at this stage of his career", while they also point out that Rangers could "offer the attacker a quicker route to the first team at Ibrox" than he would be offered at either Manchester City or Chelsea.

It remains to be seen whether a move ultimately materialises, but Rangers will be keen not to lose yet more Scottish talent to clubs outside Scotland, especially one with such high potential.

£150,000 on offer for winning teams as ECB continues push towards a “gender-balanced sport”

The Hundred will feature equal prize money for men’s and women’s teams, the ECB has announced.A total prize budget of £600,000 will be split equally between the men’s and the women’s competitions, in a move that the governing body says “is a step towards the ECB’s long-term commitment to making cricket a gender-balanced sport”.The announcement mirrors a similar move by Cricket Australia, which equalised the prize money on offer in the men’s and women’s editions of the Big Bash League in 2017, and last year pledged to top up their women’s national team’s prize money at the ongoing T20 World Cup to match the men’s.ALSO READ: The Hundred – full squad listsThe prize money on offer in the women’s competition is particularly significant after criticism over the gender gap between salaries on offer, with the pot on offer for the winning team (£150,000) bigger than the total wage bill for a women’s squad (£120,000).Women’s salaries in the competition range from £3,600 to £15,000, while players in the men’s competition earn from £30,000 to £125,000.The majority of the prize money on offer is awarded to teams, with the winners, losing finalists, and losing semi-finalists taking home £150,000, £75,000 and £50,000 respectively. There are also awards on offer for the MVP (£10,000) and leading run-scorer, wicket-taker and fielder (£5,000 each) in both competitions.Beth Barrett-Wild, the head of the Hundred women’s competition, said: “We’re really proud of our movement towards making cricket a gender-balanced sport and whilst we’re aware there is more to do in this space, this is an important step in the right direction. It’s recognition for the women’s players and the huge value they bring to the Hundred.”The ECB is committed to transforming women’s and girls’ cricket, from inspiring young girls to pick up a bat for the first time, through to establishing the women’s game as a professional career option. This announcement today represents one signal of intent towards that commitment.”England captain Heather Knight, who will lead London Spirit in the tournament, said: “This is a great announcement for women’s sport. Women’s professional cricket is on an exciting journey and whilst, there is still a way to go to realise gender parity, this move from the Hundred is a significant step in the right direction.”We’re all really excited about playing in the new competition and hopefully inspiring more young girls and boys to pick up a bat and ball.”
