"Honestly…" – BBC commentator warns Rangers fans of striker heartbreak

Rangers could be set for heartbreak in their chase to sign a new striker in a big-money deal this summer, according to a BBC Radio Scotland commentator.

Rangers ready for change

Despite their strong campaign under Philippe Clement, Rangers look ready for serious personnel change this summer. Several stars including Borna Barisic and Ryan Jack are out of contract, while speculation continues to surround Jack Butland's future after missing out on the England squad for the March internationals.

Rangers might be in a spot of bother if this comes to fruition.

But they may not be the only exits, as it is now believed a move to make Fabio Silva's loan spell into a permanent deal will come at too great a cost.

Update on Fabio Silva's Rangers future

That comes as a BBC pundit has effectively ruled out a move to keep Silva at the club beyond this summer. The Portuguese striker joined Rangers on loan in January as a replacement for Sam Lammers, and has scored two goals in nine Scottish Premiership outings, admitting he wants to stay at Rangers long-term.

Fabio Silva

"I'm loving being here", he told the media earlier in March. "I don't control these things 100%. It's not 100% my decision to stay, if it was up to me then maybe yes. But I could say 'yes' and then you have a lot of things still to be taken care of.

"Perhaps I have the least input into whether I stay here but we have two months to enjoy the football, to win titles and I think after that, if we win trophies and everything goes well, Rangers and I will do everything for me to stay."

"When you see me playing with a smile on my face, I think everything's going the right way. I enjoy playing here, playing for the fans, the staff, my team-mates."

However, he did recognise it would be a tricky move to pull off permanently, and that appears to now have been confirmed.

BBC commentator Derek Ferguson has revealed that while he is sure Rangers would 'absolutely' love to sign Silva on a permanent basis, the Scottish giants are unlikely to be able to afford to do so.

“But the money, honestly, I don’t think Rangers are going to be able to afford him, which is a real, real shame. Would we want him at Rangers? Absolutely. Can we afford him? I don’t think so.”

Having been signed for £35m from FC Porto back in 2020, Silva will have two years left to run on his deal at Molineux come the summer. Though Wolves are almost certain to take a hefty loss on the 21-year-old, they are likely to demand a significant fee for a player who has his best years firmly in front of him and is continuing to improve.

That will be too rich for Rangers, who would almost certainly have to smash their 24-year-old transfer record to get a deal over the line.

As the old saying goes, never fall in love with a loan player. Rangers fans will be hoping that they haven't allowed themselves to get too attached to Silva given the likely outcome.

Better than Trent: Liverpool ace has seen his value rise 341% since joining

Perhaps not without pathos, but Liverpool supporters have accepted lionised manager Jurgen Klopp's departure at this point, with the German targetting one last hurrah and battling for silver-laden success in the Premier League and Europa League, with the Carabao Cup already bagged.

Harder to embrace, however, would be the loss of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is out of contract in 2025 and has, as it stands, not entered negotiations for a fresh deal.

The Scouse-born Liverpool vice-captain is the homegrown star that every fan adores, the celestial playmaker with jaw-dropping creative ability – he's a "genius", as has been said by reporter Neil Jones.

Alongside full-back pal Andy Robertson, the 25-year-old is the highest-assisting defender in Premier League history, and supporters can only envisage a future with him at the centre of the Anfield pitch – figuratively and, perhaps, literally, given his inevitable and inexorable shift into the centre of the park from right-back.

His is not the only contract FSG's CEO of Football Michael Edwards and Liverpool's sporting director Richard Hughes need to deal with though, with Mohamed Salah's contract also expiring at the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Mohamed Salah's season in numbers

Salah has been at Liverpool for some time now, instrumental in the whole gamut of silverware secured under Klopp's management, and while he's no longer the dribble-happy player of seasons ago, the 31-year-old is polished and sharpened to a fine point.

It's remarkable, really. This season, the Egypt international has posted 21 goals and 13 assists for Liverpool across all competitions, despite starting just 25 games.

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

As per FBref, he ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals scored and touches in the attacking penalty area, the top 1% for assists and the top 20% for progressive passes per 90, utterly deadly in the final third.

While there have been a myriad of Liverpool players who have enjoyed meteoric rises under Klopp's wing – Alexander-Arnold very much at the forefront – none surpass Salah, who arguably slots into the all-time Premier League starting 11.

Mohamed Salah's rise in value at Liverpool

Signed from AS Roma for £34m, a few eyebrows were raised when Liverpool forked out a sizeable sum in 2017 for a winger who had previously failed to make the grade at Chelsea.

But having now decorated himself in hordes of honours, both for the team and individual, Salah is regarded as one of the eminent forwards of his generation.

To emphasise this point, Liverpool warded off interest from the Saudi Pro League for their £350k-per-week maverick last summer, with Al-Ittihad launching a £150m bid late into the window.

Liverpool snubbed the feeble approach; no amount of money would compensate for the talisman's departure right before the start of the campaign, but such opulent outfits retain a vested interest in Salah's services and given he's out of contract in 2025, Liverpool will need to agree to new terms with the player, lest he leave for free at the end of his deal.

And given that that £150m figure marks a 341% increase in value since he joined from Serie A, it would be ludicrous to allow such a thing to happen.

Mohamed Salah celebrates for Liverpool

Without question, Salah is one of the finest attacking players in Liverpool's history, and Edwards and co better get to work swiftly, losing him or Alexander-Arnold at the predawn of a new era would be a calamity.

Captaincy inspires Jess Duffin and raises question of Australia comeback

The Melbourne Renegades captain also plays Australian Rules Football and the clash of sports has raised a tricky situation

Alex Malcolm06-Dec-2019There is someone playing in the WBBL finals this weekend who has been player of the match in a World T20 final and a World Cup final. Someone who has reached the highest level of two sports and still plays both concurrently at the domestic level. The Melbourne Renegades captain Jess Duffin is one of the form players of the tournament making 500 runs at an average of 71.72 with five half-centuries including three in a row leading into the finals weekend. But Duffin can’t quite work out where her form has come from.”It’s a good question,” Duffin told ESPNcricinfo. “I haven’t really thought about it too much to be honest. I went into the season the same way I have every other year but as I explained to other people in the past, it’s T20 cricket, anything can happen, it’s a bit up and down.”Duffin’s sporting resume is quite remarkable. In an era where female cricketers are becoming national icons, Duffin appears, at times, to be persona non grata. In part, it is because her international cricket career came to a sudden halt four years ago and it came under a different name.Jess Cameron, as she was known prior to getting married, had a stellar international career for Australia. She has played in three World T20 triumphs for Australia and was player of the match in the 2012 final against England scoring 45 off 34 balls.WBBL semi-finals, Allan Border Field, December 7

Adelaide Strikers v Perth Scorchers, 10:10am (local time)

Brisbane Heat v Melbourne Renegades, 1:50pm (local time)

Her ODI record was even better. She made 75 from 76 balls in the 2013 final against West Indies. But she hasn’t played for Australia since 2015, stepping away from international level by choice at just 26. While still playing domestic cricket in the WBBL, she has instead been playing Australian Rules Football, starring in the AFLW for North Melbourne, earning a place in the All Australian team, the league’s team of the season, earlier this year.Duffin has made the WBBL team of the year this season as captain after leading the Renegades to another semi-final. Of the eight players to have made 400 runs or more, she has the highest strike-rate, 140.05, by some margin and is the only player who doesn’t currently play international cricket. After years of worrying about her own form and her own performance she has discovered that the captaincy, which was thrust upon her due to Amy Satterthwaite’s pregnancy, might be the secret to success.”In the past couple of years I probably haven’t really backed myself in terms of trying to get the team over the line,” Duffin said. “But this year with the captaincy…I don’t get time to think about myself because I’m trying to help them in the situation we have in front of us. So it’s probably been a good thing not focussing on myself too much.”I think it’s just more about understanding the game of T20 cricket. I haven’t really had to think about it in the past because we’ve had other captains do all that sort of thinking for us. So I’ve had to do a lot of work behind the scenes in terms of looking at footage and watching other people play.”Jess Duffin playing for North Melbourne•Getty Images

Studying vision of opposition to gain a competitive advantage has helped Duffin guide her young middle order through some tricky chases. She admitted it was something she didn’t do enough of in her six-year international career.”We used to do it as a group when we were sitting in batting and bowling meetings and stuff like that but I didn’t go the extra mile and have a look myself,” she said. “So that’s probably one area I’ve probably been a bit better at, just in terms of my research. But I think that’s because I’m captain and I kind of need to know what these players are doing. I’ve tended to watch a bit more than normal.”Duffin’s form has now raised questions about a recall to the Australia side for the T20 World Cup next February. But her availability is complicated. She declined the opportunity to play for Australia A against India A in an upcoming series and the 2020 AFLW season clashes with the T20 World Cup in March.Complicating matters further, Duffin doesn’t even know what she would like to do.”Not really,” Duffin said. “I haven’t really thought about it to be honest. I know there’s been a lot of talk about my selection and stuff and I haven’t had any contact with the selectors at all and you look at that [Australian] line-up and think ‘well, where am I sitting?’. There’s some really good players in there at the moment and my sole focus this weekend is to make sure we come out on top on Sunday.”For now, Australia, North Melbourne, her personal training work, her husband and her dogs all run a distant second to leading the Renegades to victory and atoning for last year’s heartbreaking semi-final loss against the Sydney Sixers in a super over. The Renegades have been shorn of their two England stars Danni Wyatt and Tammy Beaumont, but they have gained Chamari Atapattu who made a century against Australia in October in Brisbane.”Hopefully she can do what she did the Australians a couple of months ago and dominate on Saturday,” Duffin said. “With the ball, we’ve obviously got Lea Tahuhu upfront and Molly Strano has been doing a really good job for us throughout the middle so we can throw the ball to anyone at any time and anyone can step up.”We do match up well against [the Brisbane Heat]. I think it’s about going in with a pretty clear plan and obviously we know they like to score big so it’s just trying to restrict that. They’ve got Beth Mooney and Jess Jonassen up the top who are in some really good form so it’s just having the right plans for them and just obviously going out and executing.”The Heat will need their own plans for the unassuming Duffin, who has reminded everyone this year just how good she is.

"Unbelievable" – Journalist loves who FSG are trying to bring to Liverpool

Liverpool have been urged by one journalist to capitalise on their transfer advantage and sign a transformative player this summer.

FSG laying groundwork for post-Klopp era

Liverpool are braced for major change this summer, with Jurgen Klopp set to leave the club and Mohamed Salah entering the final year of his contract at Anfield.

Currently challenging for the Premier League and Europa League titles, the Reds will be looking for a smooth transition away from the German, while also hoping to bolster a squad that has been ravaged by injuries this season.

They have been linked with a midfielder for much of the campaign, despite signing four last summer, and it appears that there could be major change in that department again ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Dean Jones wowed by midfield target

Atalanta star Teun Koopmeiners has enjoyed an excellent campaign to date, with 10 goals and 3 assists to his name in 25 Serie A outings, but clearly wants to seek out pastures new. Koopmeiners has already issued a come and get me plea to clubs around Europe this summer, explaining last week that he wanted out of Italy this summer.

"Last year there was concrete interest from Napoli. However, in the end the two clubs did not find an agreement. I told Atalanta that in the coming summer I want to leave," the 26 year-old told Dutch outlet De Telegraaf.

Liverpool have emerged as the clear frontrunner and FSG are even said to be ready to bid for the versatile midfielder, leading journalist Dean Jones to heap praise on the player and how he would perform in England.

“Teun Koopmeiners would be an unbelievable addition to the Premier League", he explained. "There is long-standing interest in him from Newcastle. While that evaporated, the club now really gaining traction with a move for him are Liverpool.

“I do think there is a slot there at Liverpool that they might look towards filling and if they got Koopmeiners, their potential would be pretty devastating."

“The fact he is adding fuel to the fire now by talking about life in England definitely suggests he is becoming open to the move, and that might be in mind with the fact Atalanta have not quite kicked on at the top end of the table this season”, he added.

With Thiago Alcantara out of contract this summer, a move for Koopmeiners may prove the perfect replacement. However, the €60m asking price may prove something of a stumbling block for any move for the Dutchman, and there is also no clear Jurgen Klopp replacement yet, meaning that any deal may well have to wait until later in the transfer window.

James Faulkner, the Australian left-arm seamer, will return to Lancashire for his fourth stint at the club for next year’s T20 Blast.Faulkner first appeared for the county in 2015, and has been one of their overseas players in the Blast since 2018. We will be going all out to repeat the success of 2015, which remains one of the proudest memories in my cricketing career.”Emirates Old Trafford is an amazing place to play cricket and I can’t wait to reunite with the squad next summer. I’m determined to win the Vitality Blast trophy back for the Club.”Paul Allott, the club’s director of cricket, said: “James is a fantastic, well-rounded cricketer of significant experience and we are delighted to welcome him back to Emirates Old Trafford for a fourth season in 2020.”He is the very definition of an all-rounder. He can bowl in any situation, which he has done successfully for us at both the beginning and back end of an innings, and is still a powerful batsman, not to mention his outstanding ability in the field too.”His enthusiasm in representing the Red Rose is evident and he has established himself as a key figure in our T20 side. He is a proven winner and a great role model to the younger players.”
