Jason Roy's woes as a Test opener epitomise a broken system

‘The ECB’s policies played a key part in winning the World Cup, but are about to play a key part in losing the Ashes’

Just as you wouldn’t go to your butcher for your eye surgery or your vet for your vegetables, so you shouldn’t be asking a middle-order batsman to open the batting in Test cricket.Yes, we know Jason Roy can do the role in ODI cricket. But ODI cricket is played with a Kookaburra ball that barely swings. And it’s played, on the whole, on pretty flat wickets where the bowlers gain little seam movement. It is, in short, a different game.Opening the batting in first-class cricket is a specialist role. It’s not so much about the shots you play as the shots you don’t. It’s about knowing which balls to leave, about having the patience to wear bowlers down and the defensive technique to withstand the moving ball. And if you don’t have someone who can do that, you risk exposing a middle-order that may legitimately not have those skills, to the new ball and fresh bowlers. While Roy could, perhaps, learn the skills required to open in Test cricket, expecting him to do so at this level – and against an attack as good as this – is naïve to the point of recklessness. He does not open for England Lions and he does not open at county level. While Surrey did, briefly, experiment with him in the position, it was a ploy they abandoned in 2012. And it wasn’t because he made it all look too easy. In all, he averages 31.65 in the role (which he last attempted, in just two innings, in 2015) in first-class cricket. He now has the second-lowest average (9.80) for an opener with five-plus innings in the Ashes since the start of the 1900s. Only Geoff Cook, who averaged 9.00 in the 1982-83 Ashes, is lower in that time.Whether Roy has the appetite for the role is unclear. A couple of day ahead of this game, he spent much of his time in the nets trying to slog almost every delivery he faced into the stands. Maybe it was an exercise designed to build his confidence but, in the long-term, it is competence than breeds confidence. It rarely works the other way around. It seems absurd that an England system that prides itself on attention to detail – this is the side, remember, that provided its players with a cookbook involving various quinoa recipes in a bid to ensure they were in optimum position – can take such a laissez-faire attitude to such a key position. And absurd they can go into such games, against such attacks – and we really do have to acknowledge that this is a terrific Australia bowling line-up – with such a makeshift solution despite their coach acknowledging ahead of the game that Roy is, in his view, better suited to the middle-order.So it was irresponsible to pick Roy for this role. Just as it was irresponsible to ask Ollie Pope to bat at No. 4 – a position he had never fulfilled – in the Test series last summer. Pope, you may recall, came into the Test team having never batted before the 20th over of a first-class innings. He was used to batting at No. 6 for Surrey. On both occasions, the over-promotion of Roy and Pope risked ruining a talented player. Nathan Leamon, the sometime England analyst, has previously talked of data that suggests that the longer it takes new players to achieve success, the less likely it is they will go on to enjoy long careers. Destroying players’ self-confidence in the formative stages of their career could cause lasting damage. The fact that England are considering swapping the positions of Roy and Joe Denly – who looked so out of depth while batting on Friday that it was tempting to call the coastguard – is not especially encouraging. In truth, Roy is probably not well suited to batting at No. 4 in Test cricket, either. It would be easier, for sure, but it would still require patience, technique and discipline. And while he is a man with many skills, the stroke that brought his dismissal here – edging a drive at one outside off stump that left him a fraction – did nothing to suggest he has those qualities. He might well prove best at No. 6. But England aren’t looking for No. 6s.Conditions were pretty good for batting on Friday. Yes, the attack was good and there was seam movement. But it was sunny and there was none of the swing that troubled batsmen on Thursday. England would be deluding themselves if they hid behind the conditions as a reason for this capitulation.Ed Smith, the head selector who has pushed for Roy to open, Pope to bat at No. 4 and Denly to win an extended chance in the side, does not emerge from this situation especially well. He has previously defended his selection policy by stating, “there has to be a compelling reason not to have one of your top players in the team”. But such a naïve policy ignores the balance required to build a side; it ignores the specialism required at this level; it involved far too much wishful thinking. It just isn’t working.Ultimately, though, all these issues stem back to one fundamental problem: county cricket does not appear to be producing top-order batsmen of the quantity or quality required. Until they do, England’s team management will always be looking for contingencies and England’s middle-order will continue to be exposed. Eventually, the penny will drop at the ECB, that by eroding the primacy of the county championship, they have eroded their Test team’s ability to compete. They are the ones to blame for these embarrassments. The team is simply the product of a broken system. There are, however, some other options. There’s Dom Sibley, of Warwickshire, who has churned out runs consistently over the last year and has the patience of an old-school opener. There’s Zak Crawley, who looks a fine talent and plays the short ball particularly well, but who is very young, very green and, perhaps, a little vulnerable to expose at this stage. And there are the likes of Sam Robson and Mark Stoneman whose averages in the high 20s or low 30s are suddenly not looking all that shabby. But increasingly, as you cast around the counties for options, you are reminded of Bob Dylan’s great line: “All these people that you mention, I know them they’re quite lame, I had to rearrange their faces and give them all another name.” It probably won’t matter too much who England pick. The system is broken.Sound like hyperbole? Well, this was England’s lowest Ashes total since 1948 and their second-lowest since 1909. It was the fourth time in the Trevor Bayliss era that they have been bowled out for under 100; no other Test side has suffered such an indignity so often. It keeps happening. And if things keep happening, they can’t be dismissed as an aberration. There is a lack of respect for the old virtues of batting; for determination and patience and technique. And there is a lack of respect given to the county game which builds players; truly, the changes made in recent years amount to an act of vandalism. If the ECB truly care about Test cricket – oh, they talk a good game, but there’s very little evidence of anything other than talk – they will acknowledge that you don’t build Test success by focusing on white-ball cricket and you don’t build a team by picking the most attractive stroke-makers. The ECB’s policies played a key part in winning the World Cup, but are about to play a key part in losing the Ashes.England’s Test batting is painfully weak. Perhaps as weak as it has ever been. Unless the ECB have the courage to change the county structure – and yes, that includes backtracking on the monstrosity that is the white-ball window and accepting that the focus on The Hundred won’t do a thing to help the Test team – it will keep happening.

Chelsea and Boehly ready to pay £50m+ to sign Serie A "goal machine"

Chelsea and Todd Boehly are reportedly willing to splash the cash on a new "goal machine" ahead of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea striker rumours

The Blues, under Mauricio Pochettino, are currently gearing up for an EFL Cup final against Liverpool this weekend at Wembley.

However, in the Premier League, it has once again been a season to forget at Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea currently 10th in the table on 35 points from 25 games. The club have scored 42 goals in the top flight, with every side apart from West Ham in the top half scoring more than the Blues. As a result, it looks as if a new marquee striker signing is at the top of the wishlist for Boehly ahead of the 2024/25 season.

Chelsea must rue selling "special" ace with more PL goals than Drogba

The brilliant dynamo has gone on to become one of the all-time greats.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 21, 2024

One name who has been heavily linked is Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, with reports even suggesting that the Nigeria international has chosen to move to Stamford Bridge. However, there also appear to be alternatives, which seemingly include Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic, with an exciting new development now emerging.

Chelsea ready Dusan Vlahovic move

According to reports in Spain, Chelsea are willing to break the bank to put a total of €60m (£51.3m) on the table to sign Vlahovic. It is claimed that the Blues continue to look for new offensive alternatives and are eyeing the Juventus man, however, Arsenal and Real Madrid also appear to be the main favourites in the race alongside Chelsea.

There could be competition for the Serbian striker’s services as a result, but Chelsea are the only club named willing to make an offer.

Since moving to Juventus from Fiorentina back in 2022, Vlahovic has continued to find the back of the net at a reasonable rate, scoring 36 goals in 87 games. He was quickly labelled a “goal machine” by U23 scout Antonio Mango and was also previously hailed by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.

Alessio Tacchinardi has also praised the striker during his time in Turin, describing the player as “extraordinary” back in 2022.

It looks as if a move to London for Vlahovic could be one to keep an eye on following this update, and he could come at half the price of Osimhen, who has a £100m+ release clause.

Kyle Abbott claims 17 wickets to put another dent in Somerset's title ambitions

Abbott follows first-innings 9-40 with 8-46 to deliver Hampshire a 136-run win over Somerset

Matt Roller at the Ageas Bowl18-Sep-2019Hampshire 196 (Dawson 103) and 226 (Vince 142) beat Somerset 142 (Abbott 9-40) and 144 (Davies 51, Abbott 8-46) by 136 runsFor the second day in a row, Kyle Abbott caused a major dent in Somerset’s title ambitions by running through their top, middle, and lower order to finish with 17 wickets in the match.Abbott’s 17 for 86 amounted to the best first-class match figures since Jim Laker’s 19 for 90 against Australia in the fourth Test of the 1956 Ashes. After a wicketless five-over opening burst, Abbott ripped the heart out of Somerset’s side in his second spell, getting the ball to reverse as he took six wickets in as many overs, pegging them back from 86 without loss to 100 for 7 in pursuit of 281. He returned to take two more wickets in his third spell, finishing the game by rearranging last man Josh Davey’s stumps to end with the fourth-best analysis in County Championship history, and the best-ever by a Hampshire bowler in any game. For Somerset, it means that with Essex winning at Chelmsford against Surrey, they must beat the division’s new leaders at Taunton next week if they are to seal a maiden Championship title. Also read: Surrey can’t stay out of Harmer’s wayClutching as many bottles of beer as he could fit in his hands, Abbott sat out in the middle with his team-mates as the sun set over the Ageas Bowl and tweeted: “@EssexCricket You Welcome….”Abbott had suggested on the game’s second evening that the chance to “spoil Somerset’s party” had acted as a source of motivation, and that much was evident in his fiery spells.”Especially once the captain and Hildreth went, we put a lot of pressure on that middle order,” he told ESPNcricinfo today. “There were a couple of youngsters in there, and even a couple of the senior players – we let them know that if they mess up, it’s gone. There’s a lot of pressure on winning this Championship.”And if he needed a further carrot, it was clear that the sight of them lifting the Royal London Cup at Lord’s in May had offered one. “They celebrated against us at that final,” he said, “so we wanted to give them some hard work for next week against Essex.”There are one or two teams around the country that set up for the way I like to bowl. I suppose they’re one.” It was quite the understatement; Abbott now has 35 wickets in his past six innings against Somerset, with a staggering average of 8.51. His career average in first-class cricket has dipped under 21 after his latest effort.Kyle Abbott celebrates the wicket of Craig Overton•Getty Images

Signing a Kolpak deal in 2017 made plenty of sense for him and his family, but it should be a source of regret for the wider cricketing community that this great bowler will never again play internationally.”From the first innings, with the new ball nipping, to now when it got flat – it was two different skillsets, with the reverse-swinging ball. I’m pretty happy to know that my skills are up to scratch, and whatever the conditions, I can take some wickets,” he reflected. It had briefly seemed as though Somerset had a reasonable chance of chasing their target, with the pitch flattening out and drying under the baking sun, and their 86 was comfortably the highest opening partnership of the match. But the procession started in tame fashion after lunch, as Murali Vijay skewed a pull shot to wide mid-on. As the ball began to reverse, their middle-order’s shortcomings were exposed. Tom Abell was taken by surprise by a ball that got up well off the pitch, before Tom Banton and George Bartlett were lbw playing across the line to successive inswingers.Steven Davies – who held the key after starting brightly on his way to 51 – edged behind to one that nipped away, before Dom Bess was trapped leg-before to effectively finish the game as a contest.Craig Overton summoned the spirit of Old Trafford to hang around as Lewis Gregory’s partner for a gritty stand of 40 in 14.2 overs, but fended a catch to slip from a back-of-a-length ball, before Davey was bowled to seal the game. All told, 10 of Abbott’s 17 wickets were bowled or lbw, with four caught behind, and one held at slip, short leg and mid-on respectively. It was a relentless performance, and one that proved too good for Somerset.Kyle Abbott walks off after taking nine wickets•Getty Images

Picking his players up from this disappointment will be the biggest test of Abell’s captaincy to date, but it is a task that he thinks he is up to.”It’s a balance,” he said. “Obviously it’s not good enough, how we’ve performed, and today in particular. I think it was a relatively good wicket, and we haven’t put up enough of a fight.”Equally, we want to be in as positive a frame of mind as we can be for next week. We all know we need to be better. I don’t think we’ll need too much picking up – there’s so much on the line and we’re all aware of what’s at stake. Ultimately, we’ve got to perform, and we’ve got to beat Essex.”The elephant in the room for the Championship decider is that the forecast is poor for the first few days of the game, meaning that Somerset may have to force a result in double-quick time.Outgoing groundsman Simon Lee – who ironically takes over at the Ageas Bowl next season – has always been willing to sacrifice his own reputation for the good of the side when necessary. While they will be conscious of the fact Essex have Simon Harmer in their ranks, the return of Jack Leach from England duty may tempt them to prepare a turning track.”We’ll look at our squad and try and produce a wicket that best fits that,” said Abell. “Leachy’s had a fantastic summer, and he’s a world-class spin bowler, so hopefully he’ll have a big role to play.”For the time being, though, it will feel like a long bus ride home to Taunton, with the lingering memories of Abbott’s remarkable haul to consider.

Man Utd’s 6/10 star was their biggest Manchester Derby villain

Manchester United lost their second consecutive Premier League game this afternoon, suffering a tough-to-take 3-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Within ten minutes, an Andre Onana long ball was latched onto by Bruno Fernandes, who laid it off to Marcus Rashford, who smashed the ball home from range to open the scoring in simply sensation fashion.

From that point on, Erik ten Hag’s team essentially camped in their own box, and at half-time, they still had the lead. However, the inevitable was just around the corner.

A Phil Foden brace and a late Erling Haaland goal secured the win for the hosts, but there were some solid defensive performances on the field, notably that of goalkeeper Andre Onana.

Andre Onana’s game vs Man City by numbers

Onana can hold his head high after his performance against Man City this afternoon, with the United goalkeeper playing a big role in keeping the hosts out for just short of an hour.

The Senegal shot-stopper showed proactivity and confidence from the first whistle, with his long, direct kick acting as the catalyst for Rashford’s opener. The former Inter star was comfortable on the ball, taking 60 touches and making 25 passes.

However, it was his performance in between the sticks that was relatively impressive, making five saves, with four being in the box, and preventing 0.59 goals.

The 27-year-old also commanded his box extremely well, dealing with Pep Guardiola’s team’s 15 corners comfortably, as shown by his two punches and eight high claims.

Onana’s improvement has gone under the radar lately, but that showing will certainly give him confidence, despite the result and conceding three.

Sadly, there was one player in United red who particularly let the side down at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon.

Victor Lindelof’s game vs Man City by numbers

It’s not the first time that Victor Lindelof has struggled to perform this season, but it’s not a surprise to see him suffer against Foden with plenty of help from Kevin De Bruyne.

The Swede started rather aggressively, showing courage to get tight to the eventual match-winner and preventing him from cutting inside, but he was instantly targeted as a player to press.

Manchester Evening News' Samuel Luckhurst gave Lindelof a 6/10 rating for his performance this afternoon, and the table below rather sums up why.

As you can see, Lindelof found it difficult on the ball throughout, which was due to him consistently coming into play on his stronger right foot. The centre-back’s pass accuracy was extremely low, while he was often ignored by teammates, as shown by registering fewer touches than goalkeeper Onana.

As the game went on, the former Benfica man struggled to keep up with Foden, losing both his ground duels in the tie and allowing him to cut inside onto his left foot for the equaliser. The 29-year-old also didn’t regain possession once for his side in the form of a tackle, which allowed City to maintain control by simply working the space for a cross.

It was expected that Lindelof would struggle before the game, and unfortunately, that was the case. In fairness, it must be a difficult task to play against the best team in the world in an unfamiliar position. Either way, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him given the boot for their next clash.

Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana blow West Indies away with record stand

Indian openers put up team’s highest stand in the format, helping them clinch the first T20I by 84 runs

ESPNcricinfo staff10-Nov-2019

Shafali Verma receives the Player-of-the-Match award from former West Indies captain Verena Felicien•CWI

Openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana put up India’s highest partnership in women’s T20Is, helping them clinch the first game of the five-match series against West Indies by 84 runs in St Lucia. Their opening stand of 143 took India to 185 for 4, the highest by any side against West Indies in the format, after which the hosts were restricted to 101 for 9.After a quiet first over, 15-year-old Verma struck the returning Shakera Selman for two fours and a six in the second over, before launching Chinelle Henry for four fours and a six in the fourth over. At that stage, she was on 40 from just 15 balls.Mandhana, not outscored by her partners too often, took off in the third over by hitting three fours off Hayley Matthews, but Verma was on an 18-ball 43 at the end of the powerplay, while her senior mate was on 31 from the same number of balls. The total had reached 77 by that stage. The scoring rate fell a bit after the 11th over, but India were still eyeing a strong total, with the openers having brought up the 100-run stand within ten overs. Selman finally got the breakthrough in the 16th over, dismissing Shafali for a 49-ball 73, her highest score in a young career so far. Anisa Mohammed sent back Mandhana in the next over for 67, scored off 46 balls, and Pooja Vastrakar and Deepti Sharma fell cheaply after that. But a late impetus from captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Veda Krishnamurthy in the last two overs lifted India to their third-highest total in the format. It didn’t help West Indies that their fielders missed as many as four chances – three dropped catches and a missed stumping – against Mandhana, Natasha McLean missing two out at long-off; McLean also dropped Harmanpreet in the covers in the last over.Smriti Mandhana shapes to pull•PUNIT PARANJPE / AFP

“We definitely don’t want to remember tonight,” West Indies’ stand-in captain Mohammed said after the game. “Our fielding – we need to sharpen up. We can’t restrict a team to a low total if we are going to field like that. And, our batters, they needed to be there at the end, and not expect bowlers to chase 12-13 runs an over.”On that, the batting, West Indies sorely missed their captain Stafanie Taylor, who had scored 94, 20 and 79 in the three ODIs that preceded the T20Is but is out with an injury.West Indies lost three wickets inside the powerplay for just 33 runs. Matthews started the chase by hitting two fours off Deepti but fell in the second over to Shikha Pandey. Left-arm spinner Radha Yadav took McLean out in the third over, while Pandey added one more to her tally when she dismissed Chedean Nation. With the required run-rate soaring, West Indies could not keep up, losing their last five wickets for just 23 runs. Shemaine Campbell finished as their highest runs scorer of the day with a 34-ball 33, while Pandey, Radha and Poonam Yadav finished with two wickets each. The match, though, had slipped from West Indies’ grasp well before that, in the first half itself. “We worked hard on our opening pair,” Harmanpreet said. “We did well today, especially Shafali Verma, because is young and she is giving so much contribution to the team, playing like a senior player. Smriti Mandhana also played really well, both of their contributions played a big role for us.”
