A club that plans well for the future these days, Arsenal's best moment in the transfer market could be yet to come, with reports linking them with a move for one of Europe's biggest prospects.

According to reports in Spain, Arsenal have expressed interest in signing Barcelona midfielder Pedri, who has also attracted the interest of Manchester City and Bayern Munich. The Spain international has reportedly been at the centre of a debate at the La Liga giants, with his fitness struggles sparking questions over his future at the club.

If Barcelona are unwilling to budge in negotiations though, it would take a record-breaking deal for Arsenal to land the 21-year-old, given that Pedri's release clause reportedly sits at €1bn (£866m). That said, Spanish release clauses mostly exist as a "hands off" warning, and any deal would surely involve some sort of compromise under that figure.

If Arsenal did manage to sign Pedri, he would instantly become the Gunners' best midfielder and arguably one of the best in the Premier League. At 21-years-old, he's already an important part of Xavi's Barcelona side, making Pedri's injury history all the more frustrating. As of right now, the young Spaniard has already missed 13 games this season and has been on the sidelines since mid-December.

Nonetheless, as Pedri's stats show, he'd be more than worth pursuing. Whether it be at Arsenal, Barcelona or elsewhere, he is certainly one to watch in European football, as he rises to stardom.

O Arão, que teve esse acidente, lamento muito pois é um jogador fundamental dentro do esquema de jogo. Tinha uma pequena chance de jogar e quis, até o final, tomou medicamento injetável, para tentar ir ao jogo, mas quando tentou fazer o aquecimento sentiu o pé. Rodrigo ainda não tem lesão constatada, e nós temos esperança maior de poder contar com Willian Arão. Há de se destacar a vontade do atleta. Preferi trazer ele para o banco pelo espírito e pelo comportamento dele todos os dias.

Muito. É sempre gostoso. Não tive a oportunidade de viver isso no estádio aqui. Muita gente na rua, tem o problema da pandemia, nos preocupamos com isso, mas mostra toda a paixão e carinho da torcida por nós. Nos sentimos gratos.

A stunning 174 from Marcus Harris helped Victoria chase down 300 to beat Queensland on the final day of their Sheffield Shield clash at the Junction Oval.The Bulls set Victoria 300 from 78 overs on a surface that was deteriorating. They slumped 4 for 110 but Harris was magnificent throughout, putting Queensland to the sword to help his side chase down the target despite a slight wobble at the end. He fell with just eight runs to win, pulling Mitchell Swepson straight to Marnus Labuschagne at midwicket. Victoria lost Matt Short and Chris Tremain with three to win before Seb Gotch finally brought up the winning runs with a six, with 4.4 overs to spare.Harris reached his 100 when the score was 4 for 160 with a six over long on. He struck 23 fours as well in 197 balls as Queensland had no answer to his fabulous strokeplay. He gave only one chance, a difficult stumping opportunity off Swepson on 77.Harris’ 174 took him to the top of the Sheffield Shield runs list following 95 in the first innings. He now has 770 runs at 85.55 for the season, surpassing Matthew Wade.”To win a game like that on a wicket like that, that’s probably my best innings,” Harris said. “That’s what you want to do as a cricketer is play match-winning innings.”Harris got superb support from Short in a partnership of 182. Short was initially struggling with just 10 off 67 balls at one stage. But he finally broke the shackles with a big six of Swepson, and ended up falling for 60 with just three runs to win.”At tea we spoke about just batting and trying to set up for the last 10 overs and leave ourselves maybe 70 (to win), just with the fact we lost a few wickets and it was hard to score a bit before tea,” Harris said.”So that was the plan. But then things accelerated after tea. Feldman strangely only bowled five overs for the day while there were 10 overs of part-time spin from Labuschagne and Matt Renshaw as the Harris-Short partnership unfolded which cost 54 runs.”We tried the quicks,” Queensland captain Jimmy Peirson said.”It was a flat wicket but there was rough on both ends so we wanted to try spin at both ends and hopefully create something, but Marnus missed a couple more times than we would have liked and a couple of big overs let the run-rate get ahead of us and we couldn’t quite get it back.”Earlier in the day, Victoria spinner Jon Holland bagged five wickets as Queensland pressed for a declaration on the fourth morning. Joe Burns was bowled just 20 runs short of an elusive Shield century trying to slog sweep Holland out of the rough for a second time. Labuschagne was stumped trying to hit Holland over long-on. The left-arm spinner also clean bowled Charlie Hemphrey and Cameron Gannon as the Bulls teed off in pursuit of a target of 300, which they achieved 15.4 overs into the day.”Ideally we would’ve like to get more than 300 and not lose as many wickets but it didn’t go that way, I think Victoria bowled beautifully this morning under the clouds,” Peirson said.”But we wanted 300 runs and we wanted roughly 75 to 80 overs to bowl. You need enough time to bowl them out but also dangle a bit of a carrot to chase those runs as well. We were happy with our declaration. That’s the brand of cricket we want to play. The reality is sometimes it takes something special from someone to take it away from you, and Marcus Harris batted beautifully today.”

For both sides, this should offer freedom in terms of selection and experimentation, not that Pakistan have appeared perturbed by unsettling their team given the prolific cycling of players that has already taken place.But for the Australians, there is more fascination given the fact that this will be the first match to take place since the end of the bans for Steven Smith and David Warner, a moment in time that will only ramp up the sense among those players currently selected that they are on borrowed time in terms of shoring up uncertain places. Usman Khawaja, Shaun Marsh, Peter Handscomb, Alex Carey and the yet-to-be-selected Ashton Turner will all be looking over their shoulders to varying degrees.One player who appears to be settling nicely into his middle-order role – with the option of floating further up the order in the event of a big opening stand – is Glenn Maxwell.”Maxi is a player who people expect so much from every time he plays – because he has so much brilliance at times,” the captain Aaron Finch said. “But I think what people don’t see at times, when they get frustrated with him, is the amount of stuff he does in the field – if he averages 20 in a series, he might save 20 runs in the field as well.”He bowls overs, gets some wickets. But at the same time he has also been effectively milked for runs by the Australians on pitches not offering him too much in the way of turn, so much so that Yasir has been the most expensive Pakistani bowler of all those to have bowled more than 10 overs for the series. As a senior bowler, there is expectation that Yasir can lead a revival among his countrymen. Everton are believed to be interested in securing the shock signing of an "unbelievable" Premier League player, as rivals Liverpool look for a temporary home for one of their young talents.

The Blues could look to bolster their squad in the January transfer window, with Sean Dyche's side impressing since receiving a 10-point deduction, but still proving to be inconsistent.

Everton haven't been without transfer reports linking them with new signings recently, and they could look to improve in several area of the pitch. One player who has been backed to join the Merseysiders is Manchester City youngster Alex Robertson, but more established players could also be needed, in order to ensure a relegation battle isn't on the cards once again.

Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill has emerged as a potential option for the Blues, with the Englishman someone who could provide good squad depth in the middle of the park, and the same applies to Aston Villa's Leander Dendoncker. From nowhere, however, a fresh rumour has emerged that could reverberate across the city of Liverpool, should a move come to fruition.

Everton named in race for Liverpool's Fabio Carvalho

Taking to X on Tuesday, journalist Rudy Galetti claimed that Everton are interested in signing Liverpool attacking midfielder Fabio Carvalho, in what represents a shock update.

"Liverpool will let Fabio Carvalho go on loan also in this second part of the season after his return from RB Leipzig. Some English clubs – Everton, Wolves and Leicester among others – asked info about him. The Portuguese, together with LFC, will take a decision soon."

This is a rumour that is likely to surprise Everton fans and Liverpool supporters in equal measure, considering how rare it is to see a player go straight from one of the local rivals to the other – the last such figure was Nick Barmby back in 2000.

Carvalho is a talented young player, but he has fallen away a little of late, being loaned out to RB Leipzig last summer and only making one start in the Bundesliga this season. He could be desperate for a new challenge, however, having been recalled by the Reds, and Jurgen Klopp has praised him in the past:

"Fabio, for the situation in which he is now, in training on an absolute super level and not being involved, how he deals with it, I have to say, that’s kind of a role model. Not that he is happy with the situation, but he never gives up. It’s unbelievable."

Carvalho is arguably at his happiest in a central attacking midfield role, but he can also play on either flank, so Dyche would have plenty of options in how to use him, giving Everton much more options in the final third in the process.

The 21-year-old may feel that he has a point to prove, and if Liverpool are happy to see him move to Goodison Park – that is surely up for debate, given the rivalry between the two clubs – he could provide moments of attacking quality during the second half of the season.

The squad also features 21-year-old opening batsman Avishka Fernando, despite his modest tour of South Africa last month. Nuwan Pradeep, who has been an infrequent presence in the ODI squad owing partly to injury, has been chosen as well.Several players have made it into the squad on the strength of their performances in the week-long Super Four Provincial Tournament played at the start of the month. Jeevan Mendis, for example, took six wickets in three matches, and scored an unbeaten half-century. Thirimanne was the tournament’s second-highest scorer, behind Angelo Mathews, having struck a century and an 82 through the course of the week.Vandersay, meanwhile, had taken five wickets in the tournament, but has largely been picked on the back of encouraging performances in T20 internationals. He is the only specialist spinner in the squad.Siriwardana’s inclusion, which was perhaps the biggest surprise of the squad announcement, was down to his versatility, chief selector Ashantha de Mel said. “To balance the side, the batsman coming in at No. 6 has to be able to bowl. We went with someone who has a bit of experience in that role.”Of the omissions, Dickwella and Akila are perhaps the most significant, with both players having featured in Sri Lanka’s recent ODIs in South Africa. Dickwella’s omission is down to loss of form – he had collected three single-figure scores against South Africa, and had failed to breach 20 in four innings in the provincial tournament. Akila’s, meanwhile, is down to decreased effectiveness since remodeling his bowling action.”We can’t take two offspinners to the World Cup, and right now we are considering Dhananjaya de Silva as an offspinner,” de Mel said. “Since Akila remodeled his action, Dhananjaya gets wickets at a much better strike rate than Akila, and he also turns the ball more than Akila.”On the fast bowling front, Sri Lanka have opted for experience over promise, omitting the likes of Dushmantha Chameera and Kasun Rajitha in favour of Pradeep and Suranga Lakmal. Although not in the 15-man squad, Rajitha has been named as one of four standby players, alongside allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga, and batsmen Oshada Fernando and Angelo Perera.The team will, of course, have a brand new captain for the tournament, in Dimuth Karunaratne, who himself has not played an ODI since the 2015 World Cup. According to de Mel, it was Karunaratne’s leadership in the Test series victory in South Africa that prompted the selection committee to remove Lasith Malinga and make the captaincy change.”We saw in South Africa how Dimuth was able to unite the team, and have everyone playing together. That was what was important to us at this time. I spoke to Malinga yesterday and explained to him that as selectors we didn’t have any issues with his captaincy, but that although he was playing well, the other 10 players weren’t behind him.
