Andre Onana drew attention away from how poor 6/10 Man Utd man was v Gala

Manchester United's trip to Galatasaray was a thrilling game for the neutrals. It had everything; incredible goals, defensive errors, an uproarious atmosphere and a bit of bite between the players.

However, for Erik ten Hag and the supporters, the draw has all but put the final nail in the coffin of United's return to the Champions League, needing a win against Bayern Munich on the final day and a draw in the match between Copenhagen and Galatasaray to progress to the next round.

Andre Onana in particular came in for stick after the match for his harrowing performance at RAMS Park and played a helping hand in all three of the home side's goals, but there was another player in the starting lineup who struggled to get into the game.

Manchester United's game in numbers

The Red Devils went 2-0 up within the first 18 minutes through Alejandro Garnacho's excellent finish at the near-post and Bruno Fernandes' wonder strike from range. The atmosphere didn't seem to be intimidating the visitors despite the home fans' best efforts.

Nevertheless, the game went west pretty quickly for the travelling team and it was another defensive 'disaster-class' from Ten Hag's side.

United conceded 16 shots in total on the night which recorded an xG of 1.57 and struggled to have much possession of the ball, ending the match with only 42%.

Additionally, the Reds allowed Galatasaray to create three big chances, according to FotMob, although none of the hosts' goals came from these opportunities. Instead, a clanger from Onana from a Hakim Ziyech free-kick brought Okan Buruk's side back into the game before Kerem Aktürkoğlu levelled the score.

Having had questionable positioning for the first and last of Gala's three goals, as well as spilling the ball into his own net for the second, Onana was handed a dismal 2/10 match rating by the Manchester Evening News for his performance between the sticks.

Additionally, his distribution was below par, having averaged a passing accuracy of 48%. Nonetheless, the Cameroon international wasn't the only underperformer on the pitch for United.

Rasmus Hojlund's game in numbers

Rasmus Hojlund was taken off with a muscle strain during the team's 1-0 win at home to Luton Town prior to the international break.

After having to drop out of his duties with Denmark's national team, the £72m man returned on Wednesday night and was thrown straight into the deep end by Ten Hag. Unfortunately, the 20-year-old sunk and offered little to United's forward line, having replaced Anthony Martial in the side, who scored on Sunday in a 3-0 win at Goodison Park.

Hojlund lost possession of the ball six times during the match and had merely one opportunity to score which was well blocked by the Galatasaray defender.

Ultimately, the former Atalanta man remained on the field for just under an hour before the manager decided to bring Martial into the fray. Furthermore, Hojlund earned a Sofascore match rating of just 6.4 which was the second-lowest among all of United's outfield players. Only Victor Lindelof managed to rank lower with 6.3.

In addition, the club's crown jewel of the summer window – who MEN presented with a 6/10 rating – had only four touches in the opposition's penalty area and won just 33% of his total duels throughout his time on the pitch. Not great numbers at all.

The young striker has struggled in the Premier League this term – failing to score – but has been prolific in Europe, scoring five goals in United's first four Champions League outings but this trip to Turkey will be one he'll want to forget quickly.

Alex Pyecroft five-for scythes through Queensland

Within a space of ten overs, Tasmania seamer Alex Pycroft induced five outside edges to dismantle Queensland’s middle order

A stunning five-wicket haul from Tasmania seamer Alex Pyecroft put Queensland under pressure on day one at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. The Tigers were defending a modest first-innings score of 167 when Pyecroft ripped the heart out of the Bulls’ middle order. He took 5 for 18 in nine overs as the Bulls slumped from 1 for 41 to 8 for 86 at stumps. The early breakthroughs were made by Jackson Bird and Gabe Bell, who had Matt Renshaw and Joe Burns respectively caught at first slip.ALSO READ: Cooper, Carey fifities floor New South WalesRenshaw’s dismissal was quite unusual. He squeezed a yorker-length ball to slip and stood his ground but the umpires deemed the ball had bounced before taking the edge through to Jordan Silk.Pyecroft then just nibbled away at the perfect length and took five outside edges in a nine-over bowling spell. Matthew Wade took four of those catches behind the stumps. Marnus Labuschagne fought hard for 46 balls, but fell to a top-edged pull at square leg off Riley Meredith’s bowling.ALSO READ: Maddinson’s unbeaten 159 makes it Victoria’s dayEarlier, the Bulls made the most of the bowler-friendly conditions bowling Tasmania out for 167 in 55.4 overs after sending them in. Luke Feldman picked up a wicket in the second over before Michael Neser zipped through Ben McDermott, Jake Doran and George Bailey.Yet again it was left to Wade to manufacture a score without much support. The new captain moved to his fifth half-century of the season to go with his century against Victoria. The Tigers were 7 for 88 at one stage but the last three wickets were able to scratch out 79 runs thanks to Wade, Bell and Meredith.

Faf du Plessis suspended for one Test due to second over-rate offence

The South Africa captain will be forced to skip the third and final Test against Pakistan, beginning in Johannesburg from January 11

South Africa will be without captain Faf du Plessis for the third Test at the Wanderers after he was suspended for one Test and fined 20% of his match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during South Africa’s nine-wicket win over Pakistan at Newlands. Du Plessis’ team-mates were also fined 10% of their match fees.An extra half hour was added to all of the first three days of play at Newlands, while South Africa’s use of an all-pace attack contributed to the time taken to get through allocated overs during days on which they bowled. South Africa’s seamers bowled almost 122 overs across two innings in the match.”The team management and Faf have accepted and respect the decision as it falls under the ICC player code of conduct,” South Africa’s media manager Lerato Malekutu said. “However, they did feel there could be a bit of flexibility given the four-pronged seam attack, taking 20 wickets within three days and playing a general positive brand of cricket, rather than trying to delay/slow down the match.”*The selectors will make a decision “in the next few days” over du Plessis’ replacement for the third Test. In his absence, South Africa may call on the captaincy experience of Hashim Amla or Aiden Markram, both of whom sat out the latter stages of a bruising effort in the second Test against Pakistan, but are expected to be fit to play at the Wanderers. Aside from those two, Dean Elgar has captaincy experience both as an Under-19 cricketer, and at Test level when he stood in for du Plessis against England in 2017, following the birth of du Plessis’ first child. The charge against du Plessis was laid by on-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Joel Wilson, and third umpire S Ravi. Matchreferee David Boon imposed the suspension on du Plessis after South Africa were ruled to be one over short after time allowances were taken into consideration. In accordance with Article 2.22.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10% of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount. As du Plessis had previously been found guilty of a minor over-rate offence during the Centurion Test against India in January, this offence constituted his second minor over-rate offence within a 12-month period. The suspension means du Plessis will miss the third Test against Pakistan, which starts in Johannesburg January 11.*

Sunderland could hire perfect Mowbray successor in the "brightest football mind"

Sunderland made the controversial decision to sack Tony Mowbray last Monday, having been in charge of the Black Cats for the past 15 months and overseeing a run to the Championship playoffs last season.

The club in the North East had been on a poor run of form under the experienced coach, losing twice to Huddersfield Town and Plymouth Argyle and getting nothing but a point away at Millwall before the board decided to pull the trigger on Mowbray’s time in charge.

Despite an impressive victory at the weekend under caretaker boss Mike Dodds, Sunderland’s hierarchy will have been working tirelessly to find Mowbray’s long-term replacement in the Stadium of Light dugout and have an impressive name on the list.

Sunderland manager news – Kim Hellberg

It was reported last week that Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus was set to meet with IFK Varnamo head coach Kim Hellberg about becoming the new manager.

The Swedish trainer had worked wonders with Varnamo in the Allsvenskan, guiding the side with the lowest budget in the division to a tenth-place finish in his first season with the club. Varnamo followed this up by ending the 2023 campaign in fifth which is an incredible achievement, before the 35-year-old announced that he was stepping down from his position at the end of his contract this month.

.

Hellberg has built up his reputation in Sweden and even earned massive praise from his assistant coach David Selini, who called Kim the “brightest football mind [he’s] come across”. This bright, young mind could be the perfect successor for Mowbray at the Stadium of Light.

Kim Hellberg’s style of play

Hellberg comes from the German school of coaching in which his teams want to have the ball and to build attacks from the back but use a high press as a process of playmaking to create chances.

During his time with Varnamo, the side managed to pick up 1.38 points per game but this figure increased to 1.5 over the 2023 Allsvenskan campaign, a tally that only four other sides in Sweden’s top-flight bested. In contrast, Mowbray managed to accumulate 1.46 points per game throughout his time in charge of the Black Cats.

The Swede is a tactician with no set formation, preferring his team to be somewhat of a tactical chameleon who can be flexible with their structures from game to game, similar to that of Julian Nagelsmann and Graham Potter’s sides – although Transfermarkt have noted the 4-3-3 as the young coach’s favoured shape.

Mowbray tended to switch between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1 with Sunderland, so the players certainly won't be unfamiliar with the shape. Additionally, like Hellberg, Mowbray was keen for his team to press high up the pitch to win possession as close to goal as possible. No team in the Championship has more high turnovers that led to a goal than Sunderland this season with five, according to Opta’s data.

Sunderland could look to replicate Queens Park Rangers' success with Marti Cifuentes by bringing Hellberg to the club, despite never having coached in English football.

Having been stuck in a tricky situation when Gareth Ainsworth was dismissed from his position back in October, QPR are on a three-game winning streak and have lost just once in his seven matches in charge. The Spaniard will know Hellberg well from his time in Sweden with Hammarby as the duo faced off against each other three times in the Allsvenskan over the past two seasons. Hellberg came out on top all three times.

Chandimal worried by Sri Lanka's batting as another pace barrage looms

The captain himself failed to deliver in Australia and could only pick out Sri Lanka’s slip catching as the single positive from two heavy defeats

Dinesh Chandimal, the Sri Lanka captain, has urged his players to work harder during the next leg of their three-country tour in South Africa. He could only name a single positive – slip fielding – in their performances against Australia after losing the second Test by 366 runs. The two Test defeats in Australia follow a 1-0 loss to New Zealand in a two-Test series and defeats in all four limited-overs matches on that tour. While Sri Lanka have been plagued by an injury list that includes Angelo Mathews and four of their first choice fast bowlers, Chandimal admitted to concerns about the form of the batsmen.Sri Lanka must now regroup for their stint in South Africa, which comprises two Tests, five ODIs and three T20s.”We were outplayed as a team in all three departments,” said Chandimal. “Credit goes to Australia, they have played some outstanding cricket throughout the series. They deserved to win like this.”We just need to work harder than what we are doing. It’s always tough playing in Australia against a good bowling attack but we all know before we come here it’s always challenging. As a batting unit we have to step up. That’s the one area we have concern. I’m sure the boys will come good in South Africa.”The only positive is the slip catching for our fast bowlers and that’s one positive we can take from this series. I don’t want to talk about the negatives and sure the boys we can learn from it and come good in South Africa.”Chandimal has had a challenging tour personally with scores of 5, 0, 15 and 4. But he remains optimistic that hard work will pay off in South Africa, despite being disappointed by his own form in Australia.”Really disappointed,” said Chandimal. “But I work hard in the nets and I work hard on my game and I work hard on my game plans but I couldn’t get what we want. It is tough and I always putting my heart and soul when the practices come. I’m sure it will come in South Africa.”This is our transition period and now as a team and players we have to step up. In our young group [only] some of the players have played more than 30 Test matches so they are still young and in the international arena are really experienced. Now this is the time to face your game and play for your team. We couldn’t get the best combination because of the injuries.”While Sri Lanka have had to deal with a swag of injuries, including two of their batsmen – Kusal Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne – retiring hurt after being struck by bouncers in Canberra, there have also been off-field rumblings in the form of a public spat between ODI allrounder, Thisera Perera and the wife of ODI captain Lasith Malinga. In addition the coach, Chandika Hathurusingha, was dumped as an on-tour selector before the second Test. Chandimal backed the team management’s handling of the situations.”They put their heart and soul and they give good advice,” he said. “You can’t control what happens back home and just control what you can control. That’s one area we are focusing on as a team.”

O’Neil can land an upgrade on Kalajdzic with Wolves move for £7m "superstar"

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hoping to end 2023 on a high note as they face matches against Chelsea, Brentford, and Everton before the end of the year.

Once those fixtures are completed, Gary O’Neil will then turn his attention to the January transfer window as he looks to bolster his squad.

Wolves now considering selling player who could have been a "big threat"

The Old Gold are open to a departure.

ByChloe Chadwick Dec 20, 2023

The rumour mill has already begun to circle as some players have been linked with the Old Gold, with the 40-year-old aiming to strengthen his attacking options.

Wolves transfer news

Towards the end of November, the Telegraph reported that the Molineux outfit were showing interest in Viktoria Plzen striker Rafiu Durosinmi ahead of a potential swoop in the winter window.

A fresh update has been provided by the same outlet and they claim that O’Neil is still keen on luring the youngster to the Premier League over the coming weeks.

The club will face stiff competition from German side Eintracht Frankfurt for his signature, however, yet the 20-year-old may only cost £7m, which could turn out to be a wonderful bargain.

The Telegraph state that Wolves are happy to sell striker Sasa Kalajdzic and this could indicate that Durosinmi will be a replacement for the former Stuttgart hitman.

Sasa Kalajdzic’s statistics at Wolves

The forward arrived at Molineux last summer and was expected to be their main goal threat, yet he suffered a cruciate ligament injury on his first appearance for the club which kept him out of the whole season.

Since returning to full fitness, however, he hasn’t exactly impressed O’Neil, making just three starts in all competitions and has only scored three goals.

The Austrian currently ranks sixth in the squad for goals and assists (two) in the top flight, along with ranking eighth for shots on target per game (0.2) and 19th for successful dribbles per game (0.1), indicating that he hasn’t quite had the best influence on the squad.

Durosinmi, on the other hand, has been scoring for fun this season. The Nigerian has found the back of the net on nine occasions while even chipping in with six assists and this has all arrived across just 19 matches.

The talented striker ranks first across the Plzen squad for goals and assists (11) while also ranking third for shots on target per game (0.7) and second for successful dribbles per game (0.7) and these statistics certainly indicate that he would be a big upgrade on Kalajdzic.

Writer Kai Watson lavished praise on the youngster, saying Durosinmi is “potentially the next big Nigerian superstar” and judging by numbers recorded this season, he is doing his chances no harm at all.

It looks as though O’Neil is going to have a busy January transfer window which will be full of outgoings and incomings as he looks to build a team which can challenge for a top-half spot in the Premier League.

Unfortunately, Kalajdzic hasn’t managed to live up to expectations and while the injury stalled his career in England before he got the chance to get off the ground, he hasn’t done much this term when he has been fit.

A move for the Plzen youngster could be an upgrade on the Austrian, and it is a deal the former Bournemouth manager must get over the line sooner rather than later.
