Somerset 337 and 44 for 0 lead Worcestershire 257 (Wood 65*, J Overton 4-61, Davey 4-68) by 127 runs
ScorecardJamie Overton and Josh Davey shared eight wickets to give Somerset the upper hand despite staunch resistance from Luke Wood and the Worcestershire lower order on day two of the Specsavers County Championship match at Blackfinch New Road.Jamie Overton picked up his first Championship wickets of 2018 on his way to figures of 4 for 61 from 15 overs and bowled with considerable pace. He has gradually been built up to full match fitness via playing in the Royal London Cup and Vitality Blast and impressed in his second Championship game of 2018.After Worcestershire were dismissed for 257 in their first innings – a deficit of 80 – Somerset openers Marcus Trescothick and Ed Byrom then extended their overall advantage to 127 by the close.Their position would be even stronger but for the efforts of Wood, who is on loan to Worcestershire for a month from Nottinghamshire. The paceman came to the wicket at 120 for 7 and featured in crucial partnerships of 46 with Ross Whiteley and 84 with Dillon Pennington.Wood ended unbeaten on 65 from 77 deliveries and struck 10 boundaries. His efforts not only enabled the home side to avoid the possibility of being asked to follow on but also secured two batting points. But Worcestershire will still need a major turnaround in the overall trend of the opening half of the match if they are to stave off the threat of a fifth defeat in eight Championship matches. As well as Somerset bowled, some of their front-line batsmen will be disappointed at the manner of their dismissal.Somerset had resumed on 324 for 9 and added 13 more runs before Jack Leach edged Ed Barnard to first slip.Worcestershire quickly ran into trouble when they launched their reply with the quickfire dismissal of openers Travis Head and Daryl Mitchell. Head pushed forward to Davey and edged to Craig Overton at third slip and Mitchell flicked at a Craig Overton delivery and was caught down the leg side by Steven Davies.Joe Clarke struck four boundaries but surrendered his wicket in a tame manner when he clipped Davey straight to midwicket.Moeen Ali’s innings was a mixture of class shots and being given a searching examination by Jamie Overton and after making 30 he drove loosely at the paceman and nicked through to Davies. Skipper Brett D’Oliveira was then trapped lbw by the same bowler in the last over before lunch.Worcestershire continued to lose wickets at regular intervals with Barnard (29), who had been promoted to No. 6, and debutant Alex Milton both ousted on 120 in successive overs by Davey and Craig Overton respectively.Wood and Whiteley played with freedom in putting on 46 in six overs before the latter was bowled by the returning Jamie Overton. But his dismissal brought in Pennington, playing only his second Championship match, and he showed his mettle and willingness for a fight in adversity alongside Wood. The innings finally ended when Pennington was bowled by Jamie Overton and then Steve Magoffin popped a Davey delivery up on the on side.

Man Utd want to sign new 24 y/o player who impressed against Casemiro

Manchester United are thought to be interested in signing a new defender who recently impressed against a side that included Casemiro.

Man Utd transfer news – defender

The Red Devils have had their injury problems at the back already this season, with Erik ten Hag without the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw for large parts of the current campaign. A new centre-back was brought in over the summer in free agent Jonny Evans, with money spent bolstering alternative positions in big transfer moves for Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund.

However, it looks as if a new marquee defender is top of Man Utd’s transfer wishlist, with the likes of Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio and Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo two centre-backs to be linked with a move to Old Trafford. More recently, Real Sociedad’s Robin Le Normand has also been rumoured as a possible Red Devils target after scouts were left impressed, and it appears as if another name is of interest to club officials.

Football Insider journalist Pete O’Rourke provided a transfer update in the last 48 hours, claiming that a number of teams, including Man Utd, are keen on signing Club America defender Sebastian Caceres, who impressed against Casemiro’s Brazil during the international break.

“Spurs are among the sides monitoring the progress of Club America defender Sebastian Caceres. The 24-year-old has impressed for Uruguay’s senior side under Marcelo Bielsa and dazzled as they beat Brazil 2-0 in World Cup qualifying last week (18 October). I’m told Newcastle, Man United, Fulham and West Ham are all also interested in the defender.”

Sebastian Caceres profiled

Caceres is an out-and-out centre-back who made the move to Mexico side Club America from Uruguayan side Liverpool Montevideo back in 2020. Valued at €3.5m, he is out of contract with is current employers at the end of 2024. (Sebastian Caceres profile – Transfermarkt)

During his time in Mexico, Caceres has made more than 100 appearances for Club America, contributing to five goals, and he has also represented his country on seven occasions. (Sebastian Caceres stats – Transfermarkt)

As mentioned, Caceres recently impressed for his country against Brazil, which saw Casemiro play 64 minutes of the World Cup qualifier. The centre-back ended with a match rating of 7.0/10 in the 2-0 win compared to Casemiro’s 6.4/10, as per FlashScore.

At 24 years of age, Caceres appears to be a player catching the eye of many clubs in England, and you’d like to think he could be available at a cut-price fee due to his market value and contract situation. Therefore, those at Old Trafford may see the player as a shrewd target to provide back up to the likes of Varane and Martinez, making this one to watch.

"Important" Rangers player who Clement hasn’t used may now leave in January

A big update has emerged regarding the future of one current Rangers hero, with an Ibrox exit in the near future seemingly a possibility.

Rangers January signings

The Gers have started a new era under the management of Philippe Clement, with the Frenchman making a positive start to life in charge at Ibrox. Michael Beale's time as manager ultimately proved to be a big disappointment, but the current signs suggest that Rangers could be on the mend, battling Celtic for Scottish Premiership glory.

To increase their chances of going all the way in 2023/24, Clement could look to make new signings in the January transfer window, in order to freshen up the squad and add quality to it ahead of the business end of the campaign, with reports saying Rangers could make three new signings in the New Year. On the flip side, the club could also decide to cash in on players who aren't needed at Ibrox anymore, and a fresh claim suggests that that could apply to one individual, in particular.

Roofe could leave Rangers in January

Glasgow Rangers striker Kemar Roofe.

According to a latest update from Football Insider, Kemar Roofe could leave Rangers in January, but if not, they will almost certainly let him leave next summer when his contract runs out:

"Rangers expect to let striker Kemar Roofe go when his contract expires at the end of the season – and he could even leave in January, sources have told Football Insider.

"The striker, who turns 31 in the new year, joined the Ibrox club on a four-year deal in 2020 for a fee of around £4.5million. But Roofe has been plagued by injuries throughout his time with the Glasgow giants and missed most of the 2022-23 campaign with a serious knee injury.

"Rangers have no plans to offer the forward, who is yet to feature under new boss Phillipe Clement amid more unspecified injury issues, a contract extension."

Selling Roofe, a big earner in Glasgow, in January does sound like it could be the right decision by Rangers, allowing them to receive money for his services, rather than simply leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. The 30-year-old has only scored once in six Scottish Premiership appearances, highlighting a lack of impact in attack.

That being said, the downside of allowing him to leave in January is that it could weaken squad depth unless a direct replacement is brought in, and the attacker is still an experienced head who could deliver at key times, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst calling him an "important player" just last year.

This shows the ability that Roofe, who is yet to play under Clement, has, but if push comes to shove, the Gers could still eye up a January exit if the chance arises, possibly looking to replace him with a younger option.

The MCC has appointed Karl McDermott as the new head groundsman for Lord’s to replace the retiring Mick Hunt who has worked for the club for 49 years.McDermott is currently the head groundsman at the Ageas Bowl, the home of Hampshire, which recently staged the fourth Test between England and India. He has worked at Hampshire since 2009 when he was appointed deputy head groundsman before being promoted to the top job in 2016.Prior to that he spent 17 years at Clontarf in Dublin where he became head groundsman before moving to Worcestershire in 2007.McDermott joins the MCC ahead of a 2019 season which includes the major double-header of the World Cup and an Ashes series and he will also be charged with producing the pitch for Ireland’s first Test at Lord’s – a four-day match which will precede the Ashes.”Karl emerged from a competitive field as someone who will be able to maintain the reputation of Lord’s as the ultimate ground at which cricketers of all levels wish to play,” MCC assistant secretary John Stephenson said. “His first season will be a challenging one, with five World Cup matches including the final, Ireland’s inaugural Test match at Lord’s as well as the prospect of England facing Australia in an Ashes Series but we have no doubt that he will prove himself up to the task.”We’re very much looking forward to Karl beginning his role and working alongside Mick Hunt for a short time before Mick begins his well-earned retirement.”

Hoping to prove to the world we're strong enough to win World T20 – Tryon

After leading South Africa women to a 2-2 draw against the world champions at their home, Chloe Tryon hoped the team would be battle-ready at the World T20

Liam Brickhill11-Oct-2018

Cricket Australia

South Africa women have reached two semi-finals in world tournaments in the last four years, and allrounder Chloe Tryon believes they are good enough to go a step further and become the first South African cricket team to claim a world title when they go to the Caribbean for the Women’s World T20 in November.”We know that we are good enough to win the tournament and we are hoping to prove to the world that we are that strong,” Tryon said. “We want to go there and win the competition. But we are not going to get carried away – we’ll take it one game at a time.”South Africa just got home after a promising tour of the West Indies, in which they shared the one-day series 1-1 and fought back from 2-0 down to hold the reigning world T20 champions to a 2-2 draw in the T20s. Tryon captained South Africa in the T20s, after Dane van Niekerk rolled her ankle, and reckoned the experience had been a valuable one in the lead-up to the World T20.”We learnt a lot on our trip now, which is going to be important come the World Cup,” she said. “There is obviously a lot we need to work on, but we have a good idea of what we need to do at the competition in order to do well, having recently experienced the conditions.”I felt that in the ODIs we did lose it a bit,” she admitted. “We were doing a lot of the basics wrong. Yes, it is a bit slow here, but we know we should be better. But, overall, I think we learnt a lot from being here. The team has grown a lot from the ODIs and coming back from 2-0 down to level the series, so I’m really excited to go home, work on those things and come back ready for the World Cup.”Looking back at the ODIs, we were unlucky with the one game that got rained out. I felt we were in a position where we could win that game, and unfortunately, conditions are something you cannot control. It was a bit of a challenge, but the way we went about it was really good. It’s just a few things to work on, but it’s nice to go home with the series shared.”Her rapid 31 in the final T20 tipped that match decisively in South Africa’s favour, but Tryon’s returns from the series were middling, and she said she would spend the two weeks until South Africa’s departure for the World T20 honing her role as the team’s finisher.”I still feel that I can finish off games more,” she said. “I do want to be the match-winner for the team. Obviously, there’s still a lot to work on. I still feel that I lose a bit of concentration now and then, but I need to be more focussed if I want to be there for the team at the crucial stages in the end.Apart from acclimatising the team to conditions they are hoping to prosper in next month, the trip to the Caribbean also allowed the coach and selectors a good look at some of South Africa’s rookies. Three of them – Tumi Sekhukhune, Robyn Searle and Saarah Smith – could make their World Cup debuts as a result.”I felt they did really well,” Tryon said of the new players. “I’m very impressed with Tumi, Saarah stood up when we needed her the most. Robyn and Faye [Tunnicliffe] did really well in the last game, so it’s nice that these girls got some opportunity in the middle. I hope they can now take it back home and know what it means to be here and the level we play at.”

The best Brazilian players who could join the Premier League in January

Brazilian players earning transfers to the Premier League is by no means a new trend.

Names such as Juninho and Gilberto Silva were at the top of their game on English shores as long as two decades ago.

More recently, the likes of Fernandinho, Willian and Roberto Firmino have won Premier League titles whilst Gabriel Martinelli, Douglas Luiz and Bruno Guimaraes are some of the most beloved players by their respective supporters.

With the January transfer window edging ever closer, Football FanCast has put together some of the best Brazilians being linked with a move to the English top flight.

Gabriel Barbosa, Flamengo

Linked with Manchester United

The first name on this list is a player who has already attempted to ply his trade in Europe.

Gabriel Barbosa, nicknamed Gabigol, signed for Inter Milan in 2016 from Santos.

A sizable fee was paid by the Italian club for Gabigol only for him to flatter to deceive at the San Siro, and the same can be said for his subsequent loan move to Benfica.

Barbosa has since returned to his home country and found his feet again, regularly scoring goals.

He scored 18 in his first league season back with Santos, has scored well over 100 times for Flamengo and is now on the radar of Manchester United.

In a remarkable turn of events, Gabigol could move to Old Trafford with Antony going the other way. The latter has caused the Red Devils major issues both on and off of the field and now Flamengo are willing to take him “off United’s hands” according to The Mirror, in what would be a huge fall from grace.

Antony’s move to Brazil would be a case of a “part exchange on loan” and with Flamengo “resigned to losing their star man”, this could suit all parties.

AC Milan and West Ham United are another pair of teams being mentioned in the same breath as Gabigol and the former are a particularly intriguing proposition given his previous trip to that city.

Pablo Maia, Sao Paulo

Linked with Arsenal

Arsenal are another of the English giants on the hunt for further reinforcements in the January transfer window.

There are a few holes are opening up in the squad for Mikel Arteta and the middle of the park seems to be where he wishes to start the business.

Brazilian duo Douglas Luiz and Gabriel Moscardo are both on the Gunners’ radar with Luiz, of Aston Villa, having been a long-time target.

Pablo Maia is the man in question though, a 21-year-old who plays his club football for Sao Paulo.

90min is reporting that “Arsenal had indicated a willingness to sell Partey early in the summer transfer window” and with that still being the case, Maia is a leading figure that could replace the Ghanaian.

Maia is still very young and yet has already surpassed the 100 mark in terms of appearances for Sao Paulo, thus bringing with him a commendable amount of experience.

Andre, Fluminense

Linked with Liverpool, Arsenal and Fulham

andre-trindade-premier-league-liverpool-transfers

Andre Trindade is another midfielder on the radar of Mikel Arteta, but it is Liverpool who are thought to be leading this pursuit.

The Reds were keen to bring him in in the summer but Fluminense refused to let him go as they were confident he could make the difference in their Copa Libertadores campaign.

Carlos Leite, the agent of the player, laid this out to Ge Globo as well as mentioned that there were “several proposals” for Andre in the summer, not just Liverpool.

This paid off for the club with them beating Boca Juniors in the final and now “it has been agreed that a departure at the start of 2024 will be granted.”

Arsenal have “identified Andre as a target” as per 90min with Fulham also interested, but all roads point to Anfield at this current moment.

John Kennedy, Fluminense

Linked with Arsenal

That isn’t the last mention of Fluminense on this list by any means with the Copa Libertadores’ victors set to lose a few key players when the new year arrives.

John Kennedy scored the winning goal on that momentous occasion but then was unable to see out the rest of the game after being sent off.

Reports suggest that Kennedy may have his choice of several European clubs with nothing concrete actually being said, apart from the Arsenal chatter.

The Gunners “have scouted him in the past” according to 90min and if everything is to be believed then this could be a supremely busy winter for Arteta and co.

For Fluminense, the 21-year-old has scored 15 goals and assisted six from 70 appearances. More eyebrow-raising than his attacking numbers are the discipline figures: Kennedy has picked up 18 yellow cards and a red in that same period.

Nino, Fluminense

Linked with Nottingham Forest

Since returning to the Premier League landscape, Nottingham Forest have signed a ridiculous amount of players.

Already in their ranks from Brazil are Murillo, Felipe, Danilo and Andrey Santos and they’re not finished there.

Every Nottingham Forest signing since they were promoted to the Premier League

Nino has made over 200 appearances for Fluminense and similarly to Andre, the club weren’t willing to let him go whilst the chance of winning the Copa Libertadores was still alive.

Globo Esporte is reporting that his move to the City Ground has already been penned at a fee of £6 million.

Victor Hugo, Flamengo

Linked with Newcastle United

Moving away from Fluminense finally and we are returning to Gabigol’s current employers, Flamengo.

Victor Hugo was linked with Newcastle United back in the summer as per Bolavip, and the interest remains.

Given Sandro Tonali’s lengthy ban, a move for Hugo makes even more sense now and he could join his fellow countrymen Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes in the middle of the pitch at St. James’ Park.

90min reported that Spanish giants Barcelona and Real Madrid were also keeping tabs on Hugo in the summer and whether it be Ronaldinho, Vinicius Junior or Ronaldo, that pair certainly know a thing or two about Brazilian clubs.
