They had struggled against England’s slower bowlers, and could face similar troubles in Zimbabwe, where the conditions are more suited to the spinners

After a gruelling tour of England, where they were swept 6-0 in the limited-overs series, Australia might have hoped that a short trip to Zimbabwe would provide a welcome change of pace and a change of fortunes. But their tri-series opener will be against the No.1 T20I side, and after Pakistan’s clinical drubbing of the hosts in Sunday’s game it seems there will be no let-up in intensity for Australia just yet.”England was a tough tour, losing the one-dayers and the T20 game,” Australia T20 captain Aaron Finch admitted. “But we’re here to win. There’s only a handful of us that have played here before, but we know reasonably well what the conditions are going to be. Half the boys trained this morning, and half were [at Harare Sports Club] to watch today to just try and find out some more info.”What they found out could well trouble them. Australia had struggled to impose themselves on England’s slow bowlers, and conditions are usually more suited to the spinners in Zimbabwe. On Sunday, Pakistan’s spinners claimed a combined 5 for 43 in 8.5 overs, with Mohammad Hafeez celebrating his return to legality as an international bowler by taking 2 for 3 in five balls. Left-armer Mohammad Nawaz had done the early damage, taking a wicket in the first over and immediately putting the brakes on Zimbabwe’s chase. He is likely to perform a very similar role with the new ball against Australia.”For the last couple of seasons I’ve been opening the bowling in T20 cricket,” Nawaz said. “[Against Zimbabwe] I was varying the pace and getting a little help from the track. The slower deliveries were turning a bit, though with the new ball there wasn’t that much.”We’ll go in with the same mindset tomorrow and play our best cricket,” he said. “We’ll keep the same strategy we had today, and probably the same gameplan too.”Pakistan appear to have the firepower in their spin attack to keep Australia in check. But it was Australia who had outgunned Pakistan the last time the two sides met, at the World T20 in Mohali, with James Faulkner taking 5 for 27 to seal a 21-run win that knocked Pakistan out of the tournament. There will be a completely different complexion to both sides this time around, however, with Pakistan enjoying their hottest winning streak in T20Is while Australia are floundering for stability.Pakistan have won their last eight T20I series, and their last eight games. Since that disastrous World T20, they’ve undergone a fundamental personnel change in the format and won 20 of the 23 T20Is they have played. During the same period, Australia’s record reads: played 14, won 9, lost 5.Shadab Khan led Pakistan’s fightback with a flurry of wickets•Getty Images
Yet, Australia are still ranked third, just one point behind India, and if they are able to completely reverse their fortunes and go undefeated through this tri-series, they could leave Zimbabwe as the top-ranked T20I side in the world, usurping Pakistan.”We’re ranked no. 3 in the world behind Pakistan, so this is a really good opportunity to test ourselves again and make sure that we’re measuring up and still improving in this format,” Finch said.”And you can never take anything for granted in T20. We know it’s a game that anyone can win by themselves on a given day,” Finch said, echoing what has already become a familiar refrain in this tri-series.”There is no weaker side in T20 cricket,” Nawaz agreed. “If it’s your day, you’ll dominate, if it’s not, you won’t. Going in to this game, there is an equal chance for both teams.”A short, sharp series means they won’t have much time for Australia to get their combinations right in Zimbabwe, and the situation hasn’t been helped by a couple of delayed flights that have slowed preparations. They are also already missing several frontline players through injury or misadventure.”All the teams are missing a couple of players, but that’s just the nature of sport,” Finch said. “You have some injuries, you have some other issues that pop up every now and then. So we’re still really confident in the players we have coming into this series. Everyone who’s here has a chance to play. When you pick a squad you like to mix and match the guys who can fit in anywhere.”
O lateral-direito é titular do país.

Manchester United, especially under the decorated managerial stay of Sir Alex Ferguson, were known to be frugal in the transfer market and operating within their own means.
Peter Schmeichel joined the Red Devils for a mere £625k back in 1991, whilst in the modern day Cristiano Ronaldo – just an 18-year-old kid in 2003 – joined the Theatre of Dreams for £12.24m.
Now, it's increasingly more difficult to get the top talents in on a cheap deal – inflated transfer fees often see clubs pay way over the odds in an attempt to improve their side.
For Manchester United at the time, signing Memphis Depay off the back of an outstanding season in his native Netherlands seemed a no-brainer.
Scoring 22 goals in the Eredivisie for previous employers PSV before relocating and still only 21 years of age, £31m for his services didn't feel like a bad deal.
But, it's a transfer that saw Depay fail to perform on the big stage for the Red Devils and left Man United ultimately regretting the deal altogether.
When did Manchester United sign Memphis Depay?
In the summer of 2015, Depay agreed terms to join Man United – Dutch manager at the time Louis Van Gaal eager to get the attacker in at Old Trafford.
Scoring 50 times for PSV over 124 games, Depay was a wanted man before his ill-fated transfer to Man United. The 5 foot 10 forward was subject to interest from the likes of Tottenham before the Red Devils got the deal over the line.
Following the same career footsteps as previous Red Devils greats Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Jaap Stam before him in swapping the Eredivisie for England, Depay's time at Old Trafford wouldn't be anywhere near as successful.
How many goals did Memphis Depay score for Man Utd?
He would manage a lacklustre two Premier League goals in total for the Red Devils before being shipped out to Lyon in France, only afforded 20 minutes of game time for Man United at the start of the 2016/17 campaign as a frozen-out figure.
The 88-time Netherlands international would add a further five goals to his Man United resume in Cup competitions – scoring against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League – but it's fair to say Depay's time in a Red Devils strip was an underwhelming and disappointing one.
A year and a half after moving out to Manchester, Depay was on the move again – joining Ligue 1 giants Lyon, his time with Man United rocky to say the least but an opportunity to bounce back in France.
Where is Memphis Depay now?
Depay did just that after exiting the Theatre of Dreams, going on to have a very successful time in the French top division and elsewhere.
He would go on to make 178 appearances in total for the Ligue 1 outfit, alternating between playing down the channels and as a striker – scoring an impressive 76 goals, Depay's ruthlessness returning after a barren time in England.
He would also go on to play for Barcelona, netting 14 times in La Liga for Barca before Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid swooped in for the Dutchman where his success story in Spain has continued.
In total, the ex-Man United man has registered 96 goals and 57 assists ever since he waved his short time at Old Trafford goodbye.
As a result, he has outperformed players such as Jadon Sancho and Antony who continue to struggle in England when unburdened from the pressures of the Premier League.
Manchester United's Jadon Sancho
Sancho is now exiled from the squad having scored just 12 times in 82 outings for the Premier League giants. Last term he only found the net on seven occasions in 41 outings, compared to Depay's five, albeit in only 13 games.
The Dutchman significantly outperformed United's mega-money signing the season before, bagging 13 goals in the 2021/22 term. Sancho, comparatively, could only manage five strikes.
To suggest it was a mistake to let him go would be farfetched, but clearly, it highlights how poor their English wide man has been since joining from Dortmund.
After sleepwalking through to a series win, Pakistan raised the tempo courtesy Fakhar Zaman’s double century. What does Sunday have in store?

Big Picture After sleepwalking to a series win, Pakistan blew life into a dull series courtesy Fakhar Zaman’s record-breaking double-century. This sparked tremendous interest momentarily on Friday afternoon in Pakistan. There’s little to suggest the joyride won’t continue on Sunday, but only a performance of Fakhar’s kind again can elicit the same level of interest.Zimbabwe have shown no fight whatsoever. If 67 all out wasn’t the nadir, they were blown away in the fourth ODI by 244 runs – Pakistan’s second-biggest ODI win in terms of runs. The batsmen have shown little resolve, and the bowlers have lacked consistency or potency. About the fielding? Less said, the better. Whatever can go wrong, has.As such international fixtures are few and far between for Zimbabwe. Finances don’t allow them the luxury of staging multiple home series. That said, this year has been a bumper one, but even so, the hope with which they began the World Cup Qualifiers has long dissipated. The walloping in the T20I tri-series against Australia and Pakistan has spilled over, and there’s a pall of gloom around the state of cricket, as it has been for a better part of the last decade and a half. On Sunday, they can’t erase the pain of the home summer, but at least try and put up a fight and give the 500-odd faithful that turn up every match day whether or not there’s something to cheer about.Form guideZimbabwe LLLLL (last five completed matches, most recent first) Pakistan WWWWLIn the spotlightUsman Khan went onto to play the entire tri-nation series and all four straight ODIs without aggravating any injury. Tarisai Musakanda was tipped to be captain for the tri-series and this bilateral contest against Pakistan. While in the end the job went to the vastly more experienced Hamilton Masakadza, Musakanda has shown glimpses of what he could offer Zimbabwe in the long term. Frustratingly for Zimbabwe, most of his contributions have been in the form of cameos; he has reached double figures in all but one of the last eight innings, but only once crossed 40. You could chalk it down to inexperience, but Zimbabwe desperately need a standout performance to have a chance of pushing Pakistan in this final game, and have something positive to take away from a nightmare series.Team newsZimbabwe don’t have too many options on the bench that are likely to make a difference, or they’d have tried them out by now. They have lost with each combination they tried, evry game more convincingly than the last. Chelsea look like they have finally found some consistent form under Mauricio Pochettino in recent weeks, despite their recent unbeaten run coming to an end this weekend against Brentford.
It hasn’t all been plain sailing for the Argentinian during his first few months in charge of the club as they currently occupy 11th place in the Premier League table, winning just three of their ten matches thus far.
A win over Brighton and Hove Albion in the EFL Cup sparked a run which has included league victories over Fulham and Burnley, while they came close to defeating Arsenal last week.
Defeat to the Bees on Saturday lunchtime is an untimely setback, though progress has nevertheless been made in recent weeks.
With no European competition to divert attention to this term, Pochettino has plenty of time between matches and this should help the Blues work their way into the top six.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.
The former Paris Saint-Germain boss has begun to make the squad his own, signing a host of players over the summer that could help establish Chelsea as one of the finest teams in the country if he is given plenty of time to develop them.
The next two transfer windows will be key for the manager, but will they continue to sign some of the most talented youngsters in the game?
Chelsea would love to sign Jamal Musiala from Bayern Munich
Over the previous year, the Blues have managed to sign talents such as Enzo Fernandez, Deivid Washington, Malo Gusto and Andrey Santos among others, yet they don’t appear to be resting on their laurels.
According to reporter Simon Phillips via his Substack, Musiala is Chelsea’s dream signing, especially considering his meteoric rise at Bayern in recent years.
The 20-year-old was actually at Chelsea as a youngster, but chose to join the German giants in 2019. According to Football Transfers, the Germany international is now valued at €92.3m (£81m), although considering their recent spending habits, this type of fee shouldn’t deter the club.
It would be a massive coup if Pochettino did manage to convince him to return to his previous club and much will depend on how well the Stamford Bridge side do this season.
They already have a few decent attacking-midfield options in their current squad, including Cole Palmer, who made the move from Manchester City during the summer for a fee which could reach £42.5m.
Cole Palmer has settled in well at Chelsea
The 21-year-old made his debut for City during the 2020/21 season, and he looked like he would be the next big thing to emerge under Pep Guardiola, following in the footsteps of Phil Foden.
The Englishman made 25 appearances in all competitions last term and played a part in City winning the treble, while he even scored twice in his first three games of the current season, and it looked as though he could become a regular in the starting XI.
Chelsea came calling, however, and Palmer has begun life in London fairly well. Across just eight matches, he already has four goal contributions to his name – two goals and two assists – and he currently ranks joint-first in the squad for goals and assists in the Premier League (three), while ranking first for big chances created (four) and key passes per game (1.5), showing an immediate impact.
But as good as Palmer has been, a move for Musiala would be seen as an upgrade on the former City starlet, especially regarding his performances since the start of the 2022/23 season.
Jamal Musiala could be an upgrade on Cole Palmer
Last season, the former Chelsea kid was in sensational form. Across 47 matches for Bayern, he scored 16 goals and registered 16 assists, a stunning total considering he was only 19 years old for the majority of the campaign.
The youngster has received plenty of praise for his displays of late, and Michael Owen waxed lyrical about the attacking midfielder, saying: “I think he is exceptional, really exceptional. It’s such a shame he chose Germany over England! I thought he was brilliant in the last major tournament.

*as of Musiala's debut, via Bundesliga (June 2020)
"There’s lots of people comparing him to Bellingham but I think he is a different type of player. He’s a brilliant runner with the ball. I think he’s unbelievable when it comes to dribbling. He’s got the lot, this lad."
It is natural to compare him to the other young talent that is emerging across the continent, and judging by his statistics in the Bundesliga last term, he certainly could be an upgrade on Palmer.
Musiala scored more league goals (12 vs 0) and grabbed more assists (ten vs one) than Palmer, while also registering more shots on target per game (0.8 vs 0.3), created more chances (11 vs 1) and averaged more key passes per game (1.6 vs 0.4), clearly showcasing his superiority, although he did play more games than the City gem.
When compared with positional peers playing at a similar level over the previous 12 months, Musila ranks in the top 1% for successful take-ons per 90 (4.2) along with ranking in the top 8% for assists per 90 (0.34).
In contrast, Palmer only ranks in the top 35% for successful take-ons per 90 (1.88) when compared to positional peers, while ranking in the top 19% for assists per 90 (0.27) – making it clear who has been the better player.
Signing Musiala could take Chelsea to the next level, there is no doubt about that. However, Bayern are unlikely to part with one of their finest players, and it could take an extravagant fee for them to even consider selling.
Palmer has performed well since arriving at the Blues, and he could settle into the attacking-midfield slot on a regular basis over the coming months. But if Musiala arrives, the duo could potentially fight it out for their preferred position – and on the basis of last season, there is only one winner.
