Port Elizabeth brass band silenced during play

The band left the stadium after being silenced, only to return in dramatic circumstances

Firdose Moonda in Port Elizabeth10-Mar-2018Port Elizabeth’s signature brass band was told to pipe down – not for the first time – much to their own and the crowd’s dismay during the second day’s play at St George’s Park. The umpires first silenced the band during the second session, which responded by leaving the staidum. In the lead up to tea, this decision resulted in the loud chants of “we want the band,” from the crowd inside the stadium. The band returned in the over after tea to cheers and immediately began playing as Josh Hazlewood bowled the second over of the evening session. Play was stopped twice in that over as the umpires, Kumar Dharmasena and S Ravi, who is standing in place of an ill Chris Gaffaney, met to discuss their options. The band stopped and started sporadically during the over, which ended with the caught-behind dismissal of Dean Elgar. While AB de Villiers made his way onto the field, match referee Jeff Crowe, who has had his fair share of work in this series with four disciplinary issues, addressed the umpires. The band restarted after that, during and between overs. The third session is traditionally when the band play their loudest, often accompanied by song and fanfare. The band is popular among South African fans and players and former wicket-keeper Mark Boucher leapt to their defence on Twitter. “The next time 100000 people at The great Eden Gardens, start making too much noise(which is far more deafening than St George’s), please can officials stop the game. Ridiculous! Wake up Dharmasena! You should know better, you played!” Boucher tweeted. The Port Elizabeth brass band in full flow•Getty Images

Amla confirmed the umpires had asked both the batting and fielding sides about the band because the officials felt the music was disturbing them.Players on both sides indicated the band was no bother to them. “I love my music, so I’ve got no problem with that,” said Mitchell Marsh, who revealed that he played tuba in school, while Hashim Amla confirmed the batsmen were also unaffected. “The band thing didn’t affect any of the batters,” he said. “When you are batting in the middle, you’ve got more important things to worry about it. It didn’t spoil any rhythm.”However, the band is not to everyone’s taste, especially not match officials. In December 2016, in a Test match against Sri Lanka, the band was told to play during breaks and not while play was on. Sixteen years before that, in 2000, New Zealand’s batsmen complained that they could not concentrate because the music was too loud and the band was asked not to play during their innings. They were allowed to play when South Africa batted.Silencing bands is not uncommon in cricket, with umpires Sri Lanka’s bands frequently facing silencing over the last three years. Perhaps the furthest extent of silencing was when, during the 2007 World Cup in West Indies, musical instruments were banned from stadiums. The band’s treasurer, Cole Ingram, told SEN radio that the band spoke to the match officials in the morning and “had a good understanding of what’s expected from us during the day,” but that the umpires said they “can’t hear anymore because of us,” in the second session. He called it “impossible,” to restrict the playing to be between overs. “That’s our purpose, to entertain the crowd. And at the moment we can’t do that,” Cole said.

Leeds: Elland Road starlet could be their next Alan Smith

Following just three seasons in the Premier League, Leeds United have been thrust back into the second tier amid what was a dismal 2022/23 campaign, with it already proving a difficult start to life back in the Championship for Daniel Farke's side.

Such woes are a far cry from the success that the Yorkshire giants endured in the early 2000s, with David O'Leary notably guiding the club to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2001, following a respectable third-place league finish the year prior.

While that glittering period was brought crashing to a halt by the club's subsequent financial setbacks – resulting in their drop out of the top tier – it remains a time that is fondly remembered by Whites supporters, particular for the stellar crop of talent that graced Elland Road at the time, including the likes of Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell.

That O'Leary era also saw the rise of an exciting gem from the academy in the form of Alan Smith, with Farke likely hoping he can unearth another diamond from the youth set-up in the near future…

How good was Alan Smith for Leeds?

Despite having somewhat burned his bridges with the club after joining rivals Manchester United in the summer of 2004, the now-retired ace had thrived after rising up the ranks at Leeds prior to that, notably scoring on his first-team debut away at Anfield in 1998.

The then-teenager would ultimately go on to play a vital role under O'Leary over the next few years despite his relative youth, with the versatile attacker – who could feature through the middle, on the flanks or in midfield – scoring 54 goals in 224 appearances in all competitions for the club.

Aside from his devastating attacking threat and positional flexibility, what also initially endeared Smith to the Leeds crowd was his work-man-like nature and energetic, all-action style, having notably been lauded for those traits by O'Leary following the quarter-final clash with Deportivo La Coruna in 2001:

"Alan Smith was without a doubt the man of the match. He was incredible. He trod every bit of grass, he was unbelievable. I hope people realise he's still only 20 years old and give him chance to learn and grow. We are very lucky to have him at Leeds United because he loves playing for the club. He's a winner."

Finding such talents in the youth ranks is not a common occurrence, although current boss Farke could well be able to find a suitable heir to the 42-year-old, in the form of exciting forward, Sean McGurk.

Who is Sean McGurk?

The 20-year-old attacker – who can operate out wide or in a number ten berth – has caught the eye in Yorkshire ever since joining from Wigan Athletic back in the summer of 2021, scoring nine times and registering five assists in 44 games at U21 level thus far.

A player with a "big personality to go with his ability" – according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth – the young Englishman has enjoyed a particularly impressive start to the new campaign, scoring three goals and providing one assist from just four Premier League 2 outings.

As Smyth also stated, there is a "lot to like" about the emerging sensation, with the player himself speaking about his "exciting" attributes upon his arrival at the club just over two years ago:

"People describe me as a player who is quite exciting, I like to create goals and score goals and I think that is the strongest part of my game."

The forward's goalscoring threat was also evident during his prior stint with the Latics as he netted three times in just five games for the club's U18 side, notably scoring a late winner against Manchester United at Old Trafford – a strong way to endear himself to his current side.

Although a chance at first-team level has yet to emerge for the former Wigan man, Farke would be wise to put his faith in the creative gem as the season progresses, particularly after losing the likes of Luis Sinisterra and Jack Harrison this summer.

As was evident with the case of Smith, it can be incredibly rewarding seeing an academy talent blossom into a star in the senior set-up, with McGurk seemingly having the tools to be able to follow in the footsteps of the former England international.

Iyer takes on the wristspinners, as planned

When he was first announced as Daredevils’ captain, you might have missed Shreyas Iyer in the room till pointed his way. Out in the middle, however, he just aced the spotlight

Sidharth Monga28-Apr-20182:55

‘I was ready for Narine’ – Iyer

On the day Gautam Gambhir announced his resignation as Delhi Daredevils captain, he did so sitting next to coach Ricky Ponting and CEO Hemant Dua. Only when Gambhir said he had endorsed Shreyas Iyer as captain as his last call of duty did you realise that Iyer had quietly slipped into the press conference room. Dua called him up to the dais, and Iyer spoke the routine stuff about being thankful to the team management and owners, and to Gambhir.Sharing the space with Gambhir and Ponting, two guys known for speaking a million words a minute and imposing themselves on any situation, Iyer was a quiet counterpoint. On the field in his first match as captain, though, Iyer hogged the limelight. He scored the highest score for man captaining his first match in the IPL, he became only the third Indian batsman to hit 10 or more sixes in an IPL innings, and ended up with the Man-of-the-Match award, only the second man to do so on captaincy debut in the IPL.As Iyer revealed later, he always wanted to impose. The first call was to get the better of the wristspinners and Sunil Narine. Iyer said he wanted to be a little watchful against Narine, but he was clear in his mind he was not going to let the other two Indian spinners call the shots. He was 7 off 9 when Kuldeep was called back, and he welcomed the left-arm wristspinner with a slog-swept six. Two overs later, Chawla came back for another spell, and his first ball was sent into the second tier right behind him.”Playing Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla wasn’t that difficult for me because I have played them in domestic circuit as well,” Iyer said matter-of-factly. “But Sunil Narine I had prepared for. Majority of his deliveries nowadays is offspin. I was prepared for it. I wouldn’t say I picked him properly but I did execute [against] him the way I wanted to. Yeah, he is that kind of bowler who could change the game. Back-to-back wickets could have put us in trouble.”Shreyas Iyer lofts one over the covers•BCCI

When asked if attacking the wristspinner is the way to go, Iyer said he was waiting to do exactly that in this match. “Depends, batsman to batsman,” Iyer said. “If he feels he can back his instinct and can go after the bowler, and if he feels he can easily clear the boundary… I was feeling that at that time. I waited for them to come on to bowl. Because the way I started was really slow. I just waited for them, and took them on.”All told, Iyer took 29 off the 14 balls of spin dished up to him. The knockout blow, though, was reserved for the last over, bowled by fresh Under-19 graduate Shivam Mavi, who has impressed observers with his pace and inswing. Here, though, Mavi began the last over around the wicket, and Iyer immediately knew he was going to try yorkers, which also meant lower margins of error.”It [that last over] was really important, especially on this [batting-friendly] wicket,” Iyer said. “I hadn’t played him before. So it was important. I knew he was going to try something. He was going to try yorkers. I was ready for the half-volleys. And hit straight. Luckily I could execute properly. I was timing the ball really well, so you know the last over was really important in terms of setting up the total.”You would have expected Iyer to have had a tough call to make even before going out to the toss for the first time. He had to take a call on Gambhir’s place in the side. Luckily, he said, the call was made by Gambhir himself, which opened up a place for Colin Munro, who provided them with just the start they needed.Daredevils now have two wins, which barely lifts them from the bottom of the table. Iyer knows there is a lot of work to do.”It is a really satisfying win,” he said. “Saying this, we need to continue the momentum and not get complacent at any point of time. We will obviously cherish this victory but looking forward we need to follow the process we have been following for the last few days. Practice has been amazing.”

£70m "monster" now wants to sign for Liverpool – he's a big Quansah upgrade

Is this really Liverpool? Remarkably, FSG are firing on all cylinders in the summer transfer market, acting with the viciousness of the champions that they are.

Indeed, Arne Slot led Liverpool to the Premier League title last season, shouldering the unenviable weight of Jurgen Klopp’s still-warm seat in the dugout. And he did it with minimal investment, only welcoming Federico Chiesa to the fold for £12.5m in August 2024.

FSG have long towed the line between shrewdness and frugality in transfer windows, but with Michael Edwards back in the boardroom, there’s a newfound sense of awareness that Anfield stands atop a mountainous pile of European clubs vying for the ascendancy.

But for all the Florian Wirtz’s, the Jeremie Frimpong’s and Milos Kerkez’s, there are some outgoings in the pipeline too.

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s already gone, and the 31-year-old Andy Robertson is being chased by Atletico Madrid. And the backline is set for more shake-up, with Jarell Quansah on the brink of a move abroad.

Why Liverpool are selling Jarell Quansah

Quansah, 22, is a fantastic talent. Across the past two campaigns, he has proven himself worthy of a place in Liverpool’s first team, winning the Carabao Cup and the English top flight and appearing 58 times in total.

However, he suffered a setback right at the start of Slot’s tenure, withdrawn at half-time during the season opener against Ipswich Town, Slot later citing his team’s lack of success in the duel as the reason behind the tweak.

Features proved few and far between over the next several months, and though the English ace played a larger role over the later months of the term, he will no doubt be frustrated by his lack of opportunities.

It’s for this reason that negotiations have moved apace with Bayer Leverkusen, who are closing on an agreement for the transfer of Quansah, worth €40m (£34m).

Jarell Quansah for Liverpool

A formal bid has not yet been made, but all parties expect an agreeable resolution, with personal terms not thought to be an issue.

As such, Liverpool will need to sign themselves a replacement – and they’ve got one in mind all right.

Liverpool set to bid for new centre-back

According to The Telegraph, Liverpool are expected to make a ‘significant offer’ for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who helped his side win the FA Cup in May.

Though a formal approach has not yet been made, Scott Wilson of the Northern Echo has reported that the Reds are ‘firm favourites’ to sign the central defender, with Football Insider even stating that he’s told friends he “wants to join Liverpool”.

Guehi is entering the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park, so although Tottenham Hotspur tabled a £70m bid in January, Eagles chairman Steve Parish will know that his bargaining chips are diminishing, for the Reds could snap him up on a free next year.

Why Liverpool want Marc Guehi

Guehi’s contract situation means FSG hold the cards (or, at least, more than they would have a year or two ago). And it’s a good thing, for the central defender is one of the most talented and complete defenders in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehicelebrates after the match

A strong and secure presence, Oliver Glasner has unlocked a new level of ball-playing quality at Palace that Guehi has latched onto and used to foster his technical skill.

Last season, he was an iron-solid star for his side, instrumental in beating Manchester City to win the FA Cup.

The 24-year-old is entering his prime years and has now acquired a certain taste for silver, but it’s not the Magpies he will be joining; instead, Liverpool could provide this titan with a home to grow into one of the best defenders across Europe, surpassing Quansah in Slot’s ranks.

Quansah’s 2024/25 campaign was perhaps not the best representation of his potential, so instead, see below the Englishmen’s statistics contrasted against each other in the Premier League, Guehi’s from last year, and the Merseyside talent’s from 2023/24, under Klopp’s leadership.

Now, it might feel like at a glance the younger Three Lions star (who has been called up but not yet made his official debut) has outperformed Guehi, but the Palace man’s inferior pass completion rate and success in the duel, which is largely down to the 6 foot 3 Liverpool talent’s dominance, is circumstantial.

Last season, Guehi won 63% of his ground duels (Quansah won 60% in 2023/24) in a Palace side which battled adversity near the bottom of the table in the earlier phases of the campaign and still throughout fought on a lower rung of the ladder than Slot’s title-challenging Reds.

Crystal Palace's MarcGuehiin action

It goes without saying that Guehi was in the thick of more defensive action, and a move to Merseyside would see his crispness on the ball developed while adding a progressive, mobile quality which has led one analyst to hail him as “England’s best centre-back.”

The south London centre-half, moreover, ranked among the top 9% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues last season for goal involvements, the top 12% for shot-creating actions, and the top 18% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

The Premier League perhaps hasn’t yet woken up to this player’s underrated passing game, but they will.

Slot is happy to sell Quansah for a reason. Though the prospect is highly talented and may yet become a player of distinction under Erik ten Hag’s mentorship at Leverkusen, Guehi is simply a cut above, a “monster in defence”, as has been noted by reporter Bobby Manzi.

We’ll hark back to that earlier point: Slot was frustrated by Quansah’s lack of success in the duel last August, later suggesting that he’s “outgrown being a talent” and perhaps needs to play with regularity, something the Dutch boss is not willing to offer him at Anfield.

Liverpool are aiming for the stars this summer, and by bringing in Guehi to rival Van Dijk and Konate in central defence, the club’s lofty ambitions might just be realised.

Ranking the 12 best Premier League goals from Arsenal vs Man City

Arsenal vs Manchester City is now a heavyweight fixture. Both sides have gone toe-to-toe for the Premier League crown, making every fixture these days a spectacle.

Football FanCast has delved into the history books and picked out the greatest goals scored in this fixture in the Premier League era.

12 Rodri v Arsenal, Aug 2021

Not only is Rodri a major defensive presence, but he has the ability to score special goals, as he did in the Champions League final – and also against Arsenal back in August 2021.

The Spaniard scored the fourth of five goals in a very one-sided game, and to make matters worse, Arsenal ended it with 10 men after a rash tackle on Joao Cancelo saw Granit Xhaka given his marching orders.

Ferran Torres, now of Barcelona, rolled the ball into the path of Rodri and the midfielder strode onto it with ease, curling it low and hard beyond the reach of Bernd Leno.

11 Yaya Toure v Arsenal, Dec 2015

From one dominant midfielder to another, with the one and only Yaya Toure next up.

The Ivorian was an integral player for Manchester City in a defining era for the club, scoring some very impressive goals in the process.

One of these came in a 2-1 defeat that set up a nervy finish in north London. Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud scored first-half goals assisted by Mesut Ozil to put Arsenal ahead, before Toure struck with the most nonchalant of finishes to half the deficit late on.

Toure effortlessly caressed the ball into the far top corner. Arsenal’s Petr Cech could do nothing but watch the ball sail past him.

10 Theo Walcott v Man City, Dec 2015

This table-topping clash from the 2015/16 season saw three fine goals, and Walcott lashing one home at the Clock End set Arsenal up for a superb victory under the lights.

Kevin De Bruyne had been pulling the strings in the early stages in the capital but a different playmaker, Ozil, stepped up to the plate.

He didn’t have to do all that much in truth – he laid it off to Walcott as the Englishman cut back and fired off a venomous effort.

As well as being extremely powerful, it was accurate and flew beyond the reach of fellow countryman Joe Hart.

9 Kevin De Bruyne v Arsenal, Feb 2023

Unsurprisingly, Erling Haaland scored in last season’s clash on Arsenal soil with the title potentially hanging in the balance.

Kevin De Bruyne assisted Haaland’s inevitable goal, though he got one of his own in very impressive fashion.

Takehiro Tomiyasu, whilst under pressure from Jack Grealish, played a weak ball back towards Aaron Ramsdale, and the two-time PFA Player of the Year was the first to react.

De Bruyne beat Ramsdale to the loose ball and was able to flick it over the goalkeeper’s head with one touch on his weaker left foot.

The Belgian showed he is a true master of the first-time finish with this strike.

8 Thierry Henry v Man City, Feb 2003

Football fans of a certain age will be used to Manchester City being the dominant force in the English landscape.

20 or so years ago, Manchester United and Arsenal were the two heavy-hitters and they took up the top two spots in the 2002/03 season.

The year prior to Arsenal’s infamous invincible campaign, Thierry Henry was one of five different scorers as Arsene Wenger’s men made light work of Man City at Maine Road.

Dennis Bergkamp and Robert Pires struck in the first 12 minutes and then after playing a major role in the latter’s goal, Henry came up with one of his own.

A long ball from defence aimed at Henry was brought down deftly by the Frenchman’s right foot and then without hesitation, he fired a low shot off with left into the far corner, making it 3-0 after just a quarter of an hour.

7 Eduardo v Man City, Feb 2008

Emmanuel Adebayor took all of the plaudits for the second clash between Arsenal and Manchester City in the 2007/08 season and rightly so.

He scored twice and assisted the other in a 3-1 win for the Gunners at the Etihad. His strikes were impressive, but it was Eduardo’s goal that is the real headline finish.

A wonderful, flowing team move brought Arsenal up the field and into the City box.

Gael Clichy stood up a cross to the back post and Adebayor had the vision to head it into the path of Eduardo. The man from Rio de Janeiro brought the ball down on his chest and swivelled to expertly fire the ball beyond Joe Hart.

6 Emmanuel Adebayor v Arsenal, Sep 2009

Talking of Adebayor, he features on this list for a goal of his own – and not necessarily for its quality.

He wasn’t too keen on keeping the Arsenal fans happy, as can be seen by his move to Tottenham Hotspur and his celebration when wearing the sky blue of Manchester City.

A year after he assisted Eduardo against City, he was playing for them with this goal in question being followed by the aforementioned celebration.

There were six goals in this game and four of them came in the last 15 minutes, so there was enough drama on show as it was.

Adebayor was unmarked in the area when he stooped down to head Shaun Wright-Phillips’ cross into the bottom corner of Manuel Almunia’s goal. He then only had one thought in his mind – he wheeled away in celebration, ran to the other end of the field and performed the famous knee slide in front of the travelling Arsenal support.

5 Alexis Sanchez v Man City, Sep 2014

There were a lot of rumours that Alexis Sanchez was going to cross this divide as well and reunite with Pep Guardiola at City, but he ended up in the red half of Manchester instead.

The Chilean dynamo is someone who Arsenal fans have much fonder memories of and his reputation remains largely intact.

After Sergio Aguero gave Man City the lead, goals from Jack Wilshere and Sanchez flipped the game on its head, only for Martín Demichelis to score late on to rescue a point for Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

Sanchez’s strike was undoubtedly the pick of the bunch. With Wilshere coming flying through to keep the Arsenal attack alive with a looping header, the current Inter man was on hand to calmly volley it into the back of the net.

Coming just a few months into his Arsenal career, this will have endeared him to the Gunners supporters no end.

4 Mikel Arteta v Man City, Apr 2012

Mikel Arteta first made his mark in this fixture during his initial season at Arsenal.

Over a decade ago now, he scored the only goal of the game in the 87th minute to send City back to Manchester with nothing to show for their efforts as their title dream looked to be in tatters.

The No 8 shut down a potential City break as he dispossessed Aguero before firing in an effort from range. The ball soared beyond Hart and seconds later, the Spaniard was beaming with joy as he celebrated a huge winner at the Emirates.

Mario Balotelli was later sent off to compound the visitors’ misery.

3 Robinho v Arsenal, Nov 2008

Breaking into the top three now, and in the bronze position we have Robinho, one of City’s first superstars during the Sheikh Mansour era.

Stephen Ireland scored the opener at the Etihad on the brink of half-time after a scramble in the box.

Shaun Wright-Phillips then led the charge for the second goal, breaking into the Arsenal half and sliding in Robinho, who scooped the ball over a hapless Almunia.

City went on to win 3-0 with Daniel Sturridge scoring a late penalty to put the icing on the cake, but Robinho’s superb effort remains the defining moment.

Bloemfontein-based franchise Knights have suffered a second loss in as many weeks, ahead of the 2018-19 summer. After former captain Theunis de Bruyn moved to Titans, the Knights have also had to say goodbye to middle-order batsman David Miller, who is rejoining the Durban-based Dolphins.Miller is originally from Durban and played his domestic cricket at Kingsmead until the 2016-17 season, when he left after Lance Klusener’s coaching contract was not renewed. The Dolphins also lost fast bowler Kyle Abbott, who moved to the Warriors and then Hampshire that summer. The Dolphins faced administrative upheaval in the aftermath of Klusener’s departure, but have since rebuilt under new coach Grant Morgan.Though they have not won a trophy outright under Morgan, the Dolphins shared the 2017-18 one-day cup and reached the final of the T20 tournament. With the World Cup high on South African players’ agendas, Miller’s return to Durban aligns with his major tournament goals. “The Dolphins had a good season in white-ball cricket last year and they are building something special, and I am looking forward to adding to that this season,” Miller said on the Dolphins’ official website. “I have heard a lot of good things about Morgs (Grant Morgan) and his passion for the game and his work ethic beyond training and matches, it is exciting.”The Dolphins have yet to announce their complete contract list, but Miller, who is CSA-contracted can nominate which franchise he would like to represent. In May, the Dolphins extended the deals of Morgan and assistant coach Imraan Khan until the end of the 2019-20 season. The Knights have also yet to reveal how they will plug the gaps caused by de Bruyn and Miller leaving. With the pair in their squad, the Knights won the first-class competition in 2016-17, but went trophy-less last summer.
