Tuchel really liked him: Chelsea have already sold Palmer’s dream teammate

We are finally coming to the end of the international break, with Chelsea set to face off against Liverpool this Sunday. The two Premier League meetings between the sides last season ended in a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, and then a 4-1 loss at Anfield.

Chelsea have not beaten Liverpool in any competition since 2021, when they won 1-0 at Anfield under Thomas Tuchel. However, both sides have undergone change this summer, with new managers taking the reins, and new styles being implemented.

Liverpool currently sit first in the league after seven games played, having won six times, and lost once. They have averaged 60.3% possession, the third highest in the division, have scored 13 goals, and have only conceded twice.

Meanwhile, Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea sit fourth in the Premier League, having won four, drawn two, and lost one. They have averaged 55.7% possession, the sixth highest in the division, have scored 16 goals, and have shipped eight.

The Blues will need their star man in the mood to break down Liverpool’s strong defensive unit this weekend, as their main source for goals is, of course, Cole Palmer, who has made nine appearances so far this season, scoring six goals and providing five assists.

Cole Palmer's meteoric rise

The 22-year-old came through Manchester City’s academy, playing 64 times for various age groups (U18 & U21), scoring 42 goals and providing 19 assists at that level. He then went on to make 41 appearances for the senior side, scoring six goals and providing two assists.

Cole Palmer

But at the start of the 2023/24 campaign, is where it got interesting as Palmer revealed in an interview that he never intended to leave City. Palmer stated he “wanted to go on loan” but they didn’t allow it, which led to his eventual sale to Chelsea that summer for a fee of around £40m plus £2.5m add-ons.

In his first season at the Bridge, Palmer produced an outstanding campaign, making 45 appearances, scoring 25 goals, and providing 15 assists. His excellent form then led to him winning the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season, Chelsea’s Player of the Season, and England Men’s Player of the Year.

The England international has started this season in the same rich vein of form, taking his Chelsea total now to 54 games played, 31 goals scored, and 20 assists.

Many were worried Maresca’s more tactically rigid system would limit Palmer’s creativity, but instead, it has further enhanced it, and the challenge now will be to continue to impose himself in the same way on games and lead Chelsea to major honours, with that first step being qualification to the Champions League.

But Chelsea may have gotten rid of a perfect player to help Palmer, someone who could have helped take him to the next level, and that man was sold in 2023 by the club.

Kai Havertz's numbers after leaving Chelsea

In the same summer Chelsea signed Palmer, they also sold Kai Havertz to Arsenal for a fee of around £65m. In his time for the Blues, the German made 139 appearances, scoring 32 times and supplying 12 assists.

Much of the issue surrounding Havertz’s time at Chelsea was the inability to find him a consistent role in the team. Under different managers, the German was used in different ways, playing as an attacking midfielder, as a striker, and as a winger at times.

Of course, there was still plenty of success for Havertz at the club, scoring the only goal in the Champions League final to win the game 1-0 and secure Chelsea’s second major European title, which will always remain a huge part of their history.

The 25-year-old has rediscovered himself at Arsenal under Mikel Arteta, making 61 appearances, scoring 21 goals and providing eight assists.

Arteta seems to have moulded him into the perfect number nine, with the ability to aid the press, hold up the ball, link play, and attack the box.

Tuchel once compared Havertz to Dennis Bergkamp, stating he can play in the “half positions” dropping into link play, and playing “free” from the number nine position in order to create overloads on one side, to then arrive in the box.

And you can see from the metrics above how Arsenal began to maximise these assets of Havertz, not tasking him with progressing play, where his numbers were better at Chelsea, but instead allowing him to drift as a number nine, create for himself and others, get more shots off, and attack balls into the box with his hefty 6 foot 4 frame that aids his cause in winning 3.78 aerials per 90.

Palmer would benefit from having a selfless runner like Havertz up front who can drag defenders away with his runs, create little pockets of space for Palmer to receive, and also attack balls into the box, particularly from those crosses that the England star can play so perfectly, with left-footed inswingers from the right side.

Chelsea have looked to add height to their attacking line with links to Victor Osimhen and Samu Omorodion in the previous summer transfer window, as that would have allowed the Blues’ star man to fully utilise his creative toolset, with inswinging crosses, alongside his intricate through balls, and, of course, his devastating left-foot shots.

2 changes: Lovelace starts in predicted Rangers lineup vs St Mirren

Glasgow Rangers managed to put their weekend Premiership defeat behind them as they secured a comfortable 4-0 win over FCSB at Ibrox on Thursday evening.

The victory was much needed, especially with the pressure piling on Philippe Clement to get things right on the pitch and everything came together quite nicely in the Europa League clash.

Thoughts now turn to the match against St Mirren, as the Light Blues need to start securing maximum points from their league games if they are to somehow challenge for the title.

The Buddies have lost their previous three Premiership ties, shipping four goals to Hearts last weekend. Therefore, it is the perfect chance for Clement and his side to be travelling to Paisley, no doubt about that.

The game comes less than 72 hours after the FCSB encounter, which means the Belgian may make a tweak or two. However, will he want to halt any rhythm from a team that scored four goals in Europe?

With that in mind, here’s a look at the starting lineup that could take to the field on Sunday afternoon, with two personnel changes from the midweek triumph.

1 GK – Jack Butland

Jack Butland

Having struggled during the back end of last term, Butland has returned to the form which saw him come close to receiving an England call-up throughout 2023/24.

Indeed, the Englishman has kept nine clean sheets in 15 matches this season, conceding just 12 times in that time.

Another shutout this weekend will hopefully go a long way to seeing the Gers take all three points.

2 RB – James Tavernier

It is no secret that Tavernier has struggled to get going at times this season, scoring just once and grabbing three assists in 15 games, a far cry from the numbers he recorded last term.

Despite a number of Ibrox supporters calling for him to be dropped, it appears as though Clement is sticking by the defender, in the meantime at least.

Can he repay the faith by registering another goal contribution? It could ignite his season.

3 CB – John Souttar

John Souttar

The centre-back was at fault for the goal Kilmarnock scored last weekend, letting Marley Watkins get the better of him during their battle, but he was back to his best in midweek.

Souttar won 100% of the duels that he contested against the Romanian side while losing possession just six times. He also succeeded with 91% of his passes, demonstrating his ability to circulate the ball during the game.

The question is, who will partner him?

4 CB – Leon Balogun

Leon Balogun

The Nigerian was called in from the cold to take the place of Robin Propper and enjoyed a wonderful display.

The veteran was a titan at the back, winning four of his six contested duels, making two tackles and losing possession only four times.

He had to come off in the second half, but Clement confirmed it was just cramp, and he will be available to play St Mirren.

5 LB – Jefte

Jefte

Ridvan Yilmaz isn’t quite at full fitness yet, which means Jefte will continue at left-back for the foreseeable future.

Robbie Fraser is making plenty of progress, however, and he could be an interesting option for Clement to call upon should he require someone else in that position.

6 CM – Connor Barron

The Scot commanded the midfield superbly during the 4-0 victory in midweek, showing maturity well beyond his years and there is no doubt he has a bright future indeed.

He won 50% of his ground duels against FCSB along with grabbing an assist, showcasing both his attacking and defensive talents.

7 CM – Nicolas Raskin

Rangers midfielder Nicolas Raskin

While Mohamed Diomande has been Barron’s regular partner in the heart of the midfield, Raskin stepped up well on Thursday evening.

Indeed, the Belgian took 82 touches during the game, winning ten of his 15 ground duels and making nine tackles in total, impressive numbers to say the least.

This display could see him unleashed from the very start against the Buddies on Sunday. Might another decent performance see Diomande continue to be kept out of the team?

8 RW – Vaclav Cerny

Vaclav Cerny

Exuding somewhat of a Jekyll and Hyde persona for the Gers since joining on loan, Cerny was in superb form on Thursday, scoring twice.

His second was an excellent solo effort and surely will have bolstered his confidence heading into a busy run of matches. If Clement can get performances like this out of him more consistently, Cerny could turn into an inspired signing.

9 AM – Nedim Bajrami

So often utilised on the left for the Light Blues, Bajrami could be moved into an attacking midfield slot this weekend due to Tom Lawrence missing out.

According to Clement, the Welshman suffered a bad knock against FCSB and considering his injury history, perhaps it is for the best that he sits out the tie on Sunday afternoon.

10 LW – Zak Lovelace

Rangers forward Zak Lovelace.

With Bajrami moving into the number ten slot, this opens up a space on the left flank for someone. Might Clement take a gamble on Zak Lovelace?

The youngster came off the bench in the Europa League clash in midweek, replacing Bajrami, and he looked lively, seeing a shot blocked while completing 88% of his passes.

Having made his first start for the club during a trip to Paisley last season, Lovelace will be hoping for another opportunity tomorrow.

Rizwan, Haider and Shadab lead Pakistan to comprehensive win

West Indies crumbled in their chase after the home side had put up a massive 200 for 6

Shashank Kishore13-Dec-2021
Pakistan were provided a peek into their middle order future in the absence of Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik. Haider Ali showed why he’s the next big thing, overcoming a slow start before springing the innings to life with a robust 39-ball 68 to set the tone for a dominant batting display. Pakistan’s 200 for 6 was more than sufficient as West Indies unravelled easily against spin. The Karachi faithful went home perhaps wishing for a more even contest. An eventful start
Babar Azam was out second ball after West Indies elected to bowl. Left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein got one to spin sharply to take the edge to Shai Hope, the wicketkeeper. Then, Fakhar Zaman fell to Romario Shepherd’s change of pace as he toe-ended a slog to long-on. Inside the powerplay, Pakistan were two down and sputtering like a two-stroke engine running on kerosene.Rizwan and Haider’s recovery
Mohammad Rizwan kept the runs ticking along with timely boundaries, extremely quick on the pull. His picking of lengths against pace was immaculate as he raised a 34-ball half-century. However, he had to hold his end of the bargain against spin, especially off Hosein, who finished his four overs with 1 for 19 by the 11th over. At that stage, Haider was on 12 off 14, looking for the big hits without being able to hit them clean. Then, like a flick of a switch, it all turned around.Off the 12th over, he climbed into Odean Smith’s medium pace, hitting him for three fours and six to get his innings going. It proved to be the trigger for a run-surge from there. Under his bus were debutant Dominic Drakes, who also struggled for consistency, as Haider raised his half-century with an 83-metre six. It had come off just 28 balls, with Pakistan at 140 for 2 at the 15-over mark. Off the first ball of the 16th, Rizwan was out as Odean’s running catch around the ropes at deep midwicket sent him back for 78. A 105-run third-wicket stand had been broken.Nawaz’s finish
Rizwan’s exit gave six-hitter Asif Ali the platform to launch into an inexperienced attack, but he managed just 1. With Iftikhar Ahmed too failing, Pakistan needed someone to side with Haider. As it turned out, Mohammad Nawaz did more. His three fours and two sixes blindsided the visitors, who until then were hoping to restrict Pakistan to 180. That was to change, however, as the 19th over by Romario Shepherd went for 21, thereby allowing for a massive finish.Wasim’s rip-roaring spell
First ball: a glorious cover drive on the up. Third ball: a short-arm jab for six. Enough to demoralise a rookie 20-year old wanting to impress the team management? Not Mohammad Wasim. He responded with pin-point yorker to flatten Nicholas Pooran’s off-stump as he was late on the shot. Perhaps he underestimated Wasim’s pace. Then, off the second legitimate delivery off his next over, the sixth of the innings, he struck comeback man Devon Thomas flush on his boot. Gone, he didn’t even bother reviewing. West Indies were 46 for 3 inside the Powerplay.Nawaz, Shadab apply the choke
With the target already looking beyond reach and the asking rate spiralling by the minute, Nawaz and Shadab Khan spun a web around the batters, using the crease and variations in length superbly to tie the batters down. Hope was out lbw sweeping, Shamarh Brooks bowled trying to heave into the leg side and Rovman Powell caught brilliantly by a diving Nawaz at long-on. At 88 for 7, West Indies were in danger of being bowled out well inside 20 overs. However, Odean (24 off 16) and Shepherd (21 off 16) got together to swing their bats for some powerful blows. although they merely served to reduce the margin of defeat.

Chelsea player ratings vs Brighton: Marc Cucurella and Filip Jorgensen flop in humiliating loss as Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku are kept silent by sublime Seagulls

The Blues put in another dismal display on the South Coast with several stars failing to step up in the big moments

Chelsea's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League took a huge hit after losing to Brighton for the second time in a week, falling to a 3-0 defeat in the Premier League.

The Blues delivered a first-half performance that fans have become all too familiar with in the last few years. There were flashes of danger from the frontline, but no real purpose in their attacks, which was reflected in the players heading down the tunnel having failed to register a shot on target.

It was even worse at the back. The visitors always looked vulnerable and with the attacking talent Brighton had available, it was only a matter of time before they were punished.

Just 27 minutes in, the deadlock was broken with a bit of magic from Kaoru Mitoma. A long ball from his own box by goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen was plucked out of the sky by the winger, who cut inside Trevoh Chalobah before finishing past Filip Jorgensen in goal.

Eleven minutes later it was 2-0. Brighton carved their way through the Chelsea defence again and Georginio Rutter's deflected cross fell to Danny Welbeck, who teed up Yankuba Minteh to smash home and double the hosts' lead.

Enzo Maresca's men showed no signs of mounting a comeback in the second period, offering more of the same lethargic, ineffective patterns that allowed Brighton to coast towards victory.

To nobody's surprise, the hosts added a third in the 63rd minute, Minteh grabbing his brace after being played through by Danny Welbeck in the box, with the veteran pocketing his second assist of the night.

Chelsea were lucky not to concede more goals, with Joel Veltman hitting the post late on and both Carlos Baleba and Joao Pedro missing good chances.

A few months ago, many were labelling the Blues as title contenders, but now they may even be considered outsiders for the top four places as their season continues to come crashing down.

Filip Jorgensen (4/10):

In a big week after being named as Chelsea's new No.1, Jorgensen did not meet expectations, letting in a particularly soft second goal.

Malo Gusto (6/10):

Was active from an attacking point of view but struggled to deal with Mitoma's quality down his side.

Trevoh Chalobah (5/10):

Got turned inside out for Brighton's opener and looked lost at times alongside the rest of Chelsea's back four.

Levi Colwill (6/10):

Had a quiet game against the club he was once on loan at but remained dominant in the air and a threat from set pieces.

Marc Cucurella (4/10):

Really struggled with the entire South Coast crowd booing the full-back every time he got on the ball.

Moises Caicedo (5/10):

Ex-Brighton man was hooked early in the second half with a highlight reel that consisted of a few late tackles and misplaced passes.

Enzo Fernandez (6/10):

One of the only Chelsea players who can leave with his head held high after putting himself about in midfield and actually showing some fight.

Cole Palmer (5/10):

Was unable to stamp his authority after missing a good chance early on the game which disrupted Chelsea's entire flow.

Noni Madueke (4/10):

Had a few bright contributions early on but went off inside the opening 20 minutes with a hamstring injury.

Christopher Nkunku (4/10):

You would be forgiven for forgetting the forward was even on the pitch such was his minimal impact on the game.

Pedro Neto (6/10):

Did the hard running yards but had no end product to drag his side back into the game.

Jadon Sancho (4/10):

Frustrations with the Manchester United loanee will continue after he failed to make any impact off the bench early in the first half.

Reece James (6/10):

The damage was already done by the time Chelsea's captain entered the fray, but he had a solid cameo.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (5/10):

Midfielder was tame off the bench which has been the story of his Blues career so far.

Tyrique George (6/10):

Was lively and unironically one of the visitors' best players of the entire match on the South Coast.

Enzo Maresca (5/10):

Will rightly face criticism for making changes when the game was already lost and the pressure will only grow with Chelsea's declining results.

West Ham now keen on signing "very strong" 22 y/o defender ahead of Man Utd

West Ham United have set their sights on a defender who is “technically very strong” ahead of the January transfer window, according to a report.

West Ham's slow start under Lopetegui

It is fair to say that Julen Lopetegui has fallen short of expectations since being appointed as the new West Ham boss in the summer, with the pressure now building on the manager after Saturday’s drab 0-0 draw at home to Everton.

The former Real Madrid man’s record in the Irons dugout now makes for pretty grim reading, averaging by far the fewest points per game of any job in his managerial career up to this point:

Home form has proven to be an issue for the Hammers, having won just two of their opening six Premier League games at the London Stadium, and yesterday’s result drew widespread criticism from members of the media.

Former Arsenal man Martin Keown even suggested Lopetegui’s players aren’t listening to his instructions, saying: “It’s like Lopetegui has lost the players a little bit, he is shouting from the sidelines but some of his players are walking around. It looks a stroll in the park for Everton at the moment and that is a real worry for West Ham.”

"Unbelievable" manager who's won 26 trophies now open to joining West Ham

As such, should the Spaniard survive until the January transfer window, he may need to bring in some reinforcements, and The Boot Room are now reporting that West Ham are vying for the signature of Gent left-back Archie Brown.

There is set to be stiff competition for the 22-year-old’s signature, however, with a number of other Premier League clubs also being named as potential suitors, including Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Hammers have been watching Brown closely so far this season and are keen on bringing him to the London Stadium, but it appears as though they are yet to make any moves to put themselves at the front of the queue.

Archie Brown making a name for himself at Gent

The Birmingham-born left-back, who is also capable of playing on the wing and at centre-back, has followed in the footsteps of the likes of Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho by trying to make a name for himself abroad.

During his time with Gent it would be fair to say the Englishman has done just that, particularly impressing on the front foot, averaging 0.16 assists per 90 over the past year, which places him in the 83rd percentile compared to other full-backs.

Archie Brown for KAA Gent.

Upon signing for his current club, former head of recruitment Samuel Cardenas lauded the former Derby County man as “technically very strong with dynamism and attacking impulses.”

With Aaron Cresswell now in the final year of his contract, it is time West Ham brought in a long-term replacement at left-back, and Brown could fit the bill.

Kurtis Patterson, bowlers combine as red-hot Perth Scorchers remain unbeaten

It was two-in-two for Scorchers against Hobart Hurricanes, as a 53-run win last week followed a 42-run victory

Tristan Lavalette20-Dec-2021Unbeaten Perth Scorchers continued to set an early benchmark in the BBL with another thrashing of the hapless Hobart Hurricanes at Blundstone Arena. After a 53-run win last week, it was déjà vu for Scorchers in the rematch, with Kurtis Patterson powering them to a strong total before their brilliant attack again crippled Hurricanes’ struggling batting line-up.The match was shifted from the Optus Stadium in Perth due to Western Australia’s strict Covid-19 border controls, which ensures red-hot Scorchers are on the road for the rest of the BBL.Patterson is relishing opening
For the third straight match, Scorchers changed their opening combination, deciding to mix it up at the top and give their stars opportunities. Patterson, known as a technically correct batter who boasts a Test average of 144 albeit from only two matches, was perhaps a surprise choice as opener given their slew of big hitters. However, it has turned out to be an inspired move so far. Emboldened by the backing, Patterson has been a revelation with two quick fire half-centuries, proving he can be a highly effective T20 batter.Against Hurricanes on the day, he started sedately before taking a liking to their spinners and unleashing his favoured slog sweep into the terraces. Patterson reached his half-century off just 26 balls, but his momentum was halted by wickets tumbling at the other end. With Scorchers tied down in the middle overs, Patterson eventually holed out but not before putting his hand up as the team’s permanent opener. With Scorchers’ powerful batting order mostly underwhelmed, their deep reservoir reared with Ashton Agar smoking a timely 11-ball 30 to ensure they still posted a total that proved far too good for Hurricanes. However, there was some concern over the fitness of Patterson, who sat on the sidelines during Hurricanes’ innings.Andrew Tye picked up three top-order wickets•Getty ImagesScorchers’ irresistible attack
During their heyday under Justin Langer, Scorchers usually defended decent totals, and proved the same here with a suffocating performance against Hurricanes. Their pace attack already very versatile with Jason Behrendorff, Tymal Mills and Andrew Tye each offering something a bit different, their spinners Agar and Peter Hatzoglou have also been terrific in tandem after the four-over powerplay. Moreover, the attack further strengthened with Mitchell Marsh rolling the arm over for the first time this season to add to their embarrassment of riches.Although given the nature of T20, they are bound to get clobbered at some point; but it is hard to envision that right now.Hurricanes’ batting missing a spark
Hurricanes’ fortunes this season have rested on Matthew Wade, and thus their chances of a successful chase nosedived in the fourth over when he fell to Tye’s second delivery.Almost predictably, they were never in the hunt. Hurricanes desperately need D’Arcy Short to rekindle his destructive batting which once made him a T20 sensation. But once again, Short couldn’t get going; his rough 18-ball 13 ended when Agar trapped him in front with a quicker delivery.Perhaps for a spark they need to promote big-hitter Tim David up the order, with his current position of No. 6 too low, often coming in with his side under severe pressure. And against Scorchers, the Singapore batter was run-out for 6, as Hurricanes soon slumped to their fifth straight defeat against their opponents.Meredith makes an impact in his only over
However, it wasn’t all bad for Hurricanes. After all, they should feel at least better about their pace stocks with the return of speedster Riley Meredith, who has played five T20Is and one ODI for Australia this year.Back from a hamstring injury, the 25-year-old opened the bowling and made an immediate impact with the wicket of Josh Inglis on the last ball of the over. Meredith, who clocked speeds over 150 kph, bowled sedately and accurately, with full-pitch deliveries frustrating the normally free-wheeling Inglis. But it was one and done for Meredith, who was substituted out of the match as part of his recovery. It was a little bit of a head-scratcher, but Hurricanes coach Adam Griffith confirmed that Meredith wasn’t quite 100% fit, having already planned to X-factor him out of the contest. Yet, his opening over set the standard for a disciplined Hurricanes pace-bowling effort, with all of Nathan Ellis, Tom Rogers and England’s Jordan Thompson impressing. It is at least something to take from another disappointing Hurricanes performance.

'He can reach Cristiano's level' – Carlo Ancelotti backs newest 'Galactico' Kylian Mbappe to emulate Ronaldo's success at Real Madrid

Portuguese superstar Ronaldo is the Blancos’ all-time leading scorer, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner registering 451 goals for the club through 438 appearances. He bid farewell to the Spanish capital in 2018 and is still going strong at 40 years of age with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.

Real moved to bring in another prolific presence when acquiring Mbappe as a free agent in 2024. He had previously netted 256 goals in 308 outings for Paris Saint-Germain and has reached 28 in his debut campaign for Madrid after bagging a hat-trick in their Champions League play-off demolition of Manchester City.

WHAT CARLO ANCELOTTI SAID

Ancelotti sees no reason why Mbappe cannot emulate CR7, telling reporters of his fearsome French forward: “He has the quality to reach his [Ronaldo’s] numbers, but he has to work, because Cristiano set the bar very high, but he is so excited to play here, he can reach Cristiano's level.

“Everyone was waiting for this hat-trick from him and it has finally arrived. But Mbappe is not the only one, we have many players who make a difference. And they make a difference with their collective work above their individual quality which is remarkable.”

Mbappe has taken the No.9 jersey at Santiago Bernabeu and become an on-field leader for Real. He is, however, eager to point out that collective success will always mean more to him than individual honours – as he once again tops the Champions League scoring charts in 2024-25.

Alexis 2.0: Arsenal could replace Martinelli by signing £146m-rated star

As last season ended and Arsenal sat two points behind Manchester City, they entered the summer transfer window knowing they probably didn’t need a whole lot in order to go one better next time.

Improvement was necessary, though. They sought that in the form of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori – someone who had shone at Euro 2024 – and Spain’s Mikel Merino, a man who lifted the trophy at the end of the competition.

Raheem Sterling also signed late in the day, arriving from Chelsea on loan in the dying embers of deadline day.

While Calafiori and Merino have earned plenty of game time since arriving, Sterling has not, despite the problems Mikel Arteta has faced on the flanks.

Arsenal's issues out wide

In years gone by the wide areas of this Arsenal team have been some of the most exciting. In the 2022/23 campaign, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka were livewires in attack and it was very difficult for many defences to contain them.

Saka ended that year with 15 goals and 11 assists to his name while Martinelli ended it with the same number of goals and six assists.

However, while Saka has kicked on since that moment, scoring 17 the following season, the Brazilian’s fall-off has been concerning.

In 2023/24, the bargain £6m signing only found the back of the net eight times in all competitions and went through large patches without contributing much in the final third.

It’s been a similar story this time around for the 23-year-old whose lack of cutting edge has left Arteta visibly frustrated at times.

He has missed a heap of golden opportunities, notably firing straight at Kepa Arrizabalaga when the score was still 0-0 in the defeat to Bournemouth and spurning a similar opportunity against Chelsea last time out.

Martinelli did eventually score a vital goal at Stamford Bridge but that was just his third in 11 Premier League outings.

So, improvement is needed, specifically on that left flank but as we’ve found out, Saka’s fitness has waned this term and he cannot be expected to play a whole season on the right again without much rest.

Arsenal's solution on the wing

The easy thing to do would be sign more depth and quality in the January transfer window. Over the summer they were linked with a move for Spain’s Nico Williams but he showed very little will to force through a move from his boyhood club Athletic Bilbao.

It’s likely any move for him would have to wait until the summer. But what about Real Madrid’s Rodrygo?

Martinelli’s fellow Brazilian was touted with a move to the Gunners a few months ago as he fell into the shadow of Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe at the Bernabeu.

Since those summer links, the 23-year-old has played 11 times in LaLiga and scored on three occasions, matching Martinelli’s league tally.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Rodrygo initially began the season as a starter on the right of Carlo Ancelotti’s attack but over the last month has found himself as more of a substitute due to a switch in formation which has seen Vinicius and Mbappe act as a two-prong attack.

So, it’s rather likely that Rodrygo may struggle for regular starts over the course of the rest of the season. Step forward, Arsenal, who could see the door open on a mesmerising Martinelli rival or replacement.

One problem is his likely valuation. CIES Football Observatory suggest it may take something in the region of £146m to prise him away from the Spanish capital, although it’s likely a deal could be brokered at a lower price.

Though, as data analyst Ben Mattinson put it, he could be an “Alexis [Sanchez] 2.0 signing”. The Chilean was stuck in the shadow of the likes of Neymar and Lionel Messi at Barcelona before moving to the Gunners where he became the main man, eventually leaving north London having scored 80 times in 166 matches.

So, why would Rodrygo be such a captivating signing?

Well, as you can see, he betters Martinelli in a heap of statistics, but most notably he comes out on top in chance creation.

That’s been quite the problem for Arteta’s side in 2024/25 to date, with Arsenal sitting seventh in the Premier League this season for goal-creating actions (30) which is an average of 2.73 per 90. When it comes to shot-creating actions (268), they are down in tenth.

As such, the fact Rodrygo is producing far better numbers than Martinelli in those two areas should boost the squad significantly.

While both produce an impressive number of progressive carries and take-ons per 90 minutes, Rodrygo does so while proving far more decisive in the final third. On that evidence, he’d be a seriously good signing if Arsenal revived their interest over the winter.

Did Malik Scott plan Jamie Carragher fight after 'loyal' jibe at wife Kate? Husband of CBS Sports host explains his relationship with outspoken Liverpool legend

On-air quip made at Kate Scott's expenseMalik threatened to address the issueInsists there is no tension in the CBS campFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool legend Carragher courted controversy with an on-air 'joke' made during coverage of Arsenal’s Champions League clash with Porto in March 2024. His comment did not go down well, with Kate Scott and the rest of the CBS crew left feeling uncomfortable as red-faced apologies were quickly lined up.

Boxing trainer Malik, who has worked with former heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder, said in the aftermath of the incident: "If Kate gets upset then it's a really big deal to me and I'll give him a call and if he doesn't pick up my call, then I'll show up in a physical manner so we can talk like men."

WHAT MALIK SCOTT SAID

Scott has now told when asked if there was ever any chance of scores being settled in the ring: "I didn't have any plans on fighting Jamie. But at the same time, I put it out there because my wife was hurt and I'm here to protect my wife and that was that. But Jamie, when we see each other, we shake hands, give each other big daps, have a laugh and move on.

"Jamie and I always see each other, so it's not an intimidating thing. It's just a respect that men have with each other. That's all it is. I respect him, he respects me, and my wife respects him, and he's going to respect my wife. And he does respect my wife. There’s no grudge with Jamie at all. I love that whole panel."

Malik recently made a guest appearance on the CBS panel, during a European tie between Real Madrid and Manchester City at Santiago Bernabeu, during which he wore a hoodie that sported the names of the show’s cast with “Jamie” crossed out.

He added on that playful jab at Carragher: “Well I had that hoodie and we just put a little flare onto it for the show. It was good. People loved it.

“About six or seven months ago, Jamie Carragher was on the panel with my wife, Kate Scott, Thierry Henry, and Micah (Richards) – they were doing a game and it was an outside game and Kate was explaining to Jamie. that she was loyal to I believe a Manchester team (Manchester United).

“Jamie acted like he didn't hear it so he said ‘Loyal to who? Not to Malik.’ And that went pretty bad. And it was probably the wrong kind of joke. And it just got out and when the word got to me, I put a couple of statements out that really went crazy. I was just verbally protecting my wife on the internet about that thing Jamie said.

“So time goes by and here I am at the game the other day and I have my Champions League sweatshirt on and the best panel on sports is up there.

“They came to me asking would I hop on the last segment. I didn't have the hoodie like that but by the time I got up there I had Jamie’s name crossed out and they basically asked me what I had on so I opened the shirt and I said, ‘I've got to get me another one because I basically crossed Jamie’s name out on that’.

“That was a little get back at him from the beginning of the story, just the comment that he said about Kate. Then as the show went on they were asking me my favourite (on the panel). Of course, I'm going to say my wife. The one that I married is my favourite, Kate Scott. Then I said Micah. Then Jamie said, ‘Who's next?’ I looked at Jamie with a face and I said, ‘Don't you do it, Jamie’. And then we all had a good laugh and it was just good.

“It was a really good experience. That's a very good crew. Best panel in sports in my opinion, chemistry wise. The producer really hit it right on the button with them. They got a great thing going. It was incredible. They’ve got the right individuals on there and it was fun more than anything.”
