West Ham offered first potential Lopetegui signing in £52 million forward

West Ham United have been offered a first potential signing for prospective new manager Julen Lopetegui, who appears set to take over from David Moyes when the Scotsman leaves on June 30.

West Ham agree terms with Lopetegui as Moyes exit confirmed

The Hammers have now officially confirmed that Moyes is set to depart after the expiry of his contract, bringing an end to the four years of his memorable second stint at the London Stadium.

During his tenure, Moyes has cemented his legacy as one of the club's most successful ever coaches and a legend in his own right. The 60-year-old steered West Ham away from relegation in 2019/2020, going on to achieve qualification for Europe in each of his full seasons in charge thereafter till now.

Reaching the semi-finals of the Europa League in 2021/2022, Moyes guided West Ham to a Conference League triumph in Prague one year later – putting an end to the club's four-decade-long wait for a piece of major silverware.

However, supporters have grown dissatisfied with their side's style of football lately, and you can't forget that West Ham's league form has been subpar. They flirted with the drop for much of 2022/2023, and have lost by four or more goals on multiple occasions across all competitions this term.

This has prompted West Ham to make a managerial change, with reliable media sources claiming West Ham have agreed terms with Lopetegui. The Spaniard, who left Wolves at the start of this season, is apparently set to take over from Moyes.

West Ham won't announce Lopetegui's arrival until after the end of the season (Malik Ouzia, Standard Sport), but he is all but confirmed as their next head coach. The tactician's debut season will be a mightily important one, with Moyes being a tough act to follow.

West Ham's summer window will also be significant, as many squad members are on the decline, ageing, out of contract or linked with a high-profile summer exit. The east Londoners, led by technical director Tim Steidten, are eager to strengthen their attacking options.

West Ham offered £52 million forward Vitor Roque

Now, according to The Boot Room, West Ham are one of the numerous sides being offered Barcelona forward Vitor Roque.

Agents have apparently reached out to West Ham to make them, making the Irons aware of Roque's availability for a loan this summer, coming after a season of limited opportunities following his transfer to Barca for around £52 million.

“He is a promising young man with a bright future. Barça wins a lot, they sign an excellent footballer,” said Brazil Under-20s coach Ramon Menezes on Roque.

“He is a very strong player, very intelligent to play and to attack spaces. He has talent, a lot of speed and a great sense of goal.”

The 19-year-old, it would seem, has a lot to offer for Lopetegui if West Ham opt to make any formal move.

Euro T20 Slam organisers eye August window

Lack of cricket could increase player availability for fledgling league

George Dobell12-Jun-2020Organisers of the Euro T20 Slam are aiming to stage the competition in Ireland this year. That is despite potential complications linked to Covid-19 and the fact that the inaugural edition of the competition, which features six city-based franchise teams, was postponed in 2019 due to financial concerns. But the organisers – who are also responsible for the Global T20 Canada – remain hopeful that they may be able to take advantage of the lack of cricket elsewhere in the world and are scheduling it to run with a start date of August 20, with the intention of Malahide hosting all games. A final decision is expected to be taken on June 18.Last year’s Euro Slam cancellation came days after the GT20 had run into financial difficulties, which included the non-payment of player wages. However, it is understood that the GT20 is unlikely to run this year, due to the Canadian government’s coronavirus-related restrictions and the costs associated with flying in international cricketers and keeping them in isolation. The Euro Slam is planned to feature two sides from each of Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands. While it looks likely to coincide with the CPL season, it is possible the lack of cricket elsewhere will increase the availability of players. If English counties are not playing at the time – or are only playing red-ball cricket – their players could certainly appear in the Euro Slam.Daniel Vettori, Lance Klusener, Mark Ramprakash and Herschelle Gibbs were among the head coaches announced for the competition last year. Rashid Khan, Dale Steyn, Eoin Morgan, Babar Azam and Faf du Plessis were among the players.

Kumble reveals Srinath’s hand in historic 10-for

Travelling to Perth after Monkeygate in 2008
You know as a captain you’re generally tuned to take decisions on the field. Here I was faced with something, which was off the field, to take a decision in the larger interest of the game. And one of our players [Harbhajan Singh] was obviously banned for three matches because of a racist remark – that was what the pronouncement was and we appealed. I felt he was wronged. We had to obviously be together as a team but the challenge was that there was a lot of talk about the team wanting to come back at that point in time, and leave the tour and come back. Yes, you know, probably [people] would have accepted that the Indian team was wronged and that’s why they came back. But I think as a captain, or as a team, we had gone there to win the series. Unfortunately, with the first two results not going our way, the best result could have been a drawn series because two more Test matches remained and I just wanted to rally around the team. I was fortunate enough to have senior players, former captains, in the team.We got around as a unit and then we sort of took a decision to continue and make sure that we go on and win the next couple of matches because that would be the best message that we can give back to our fans. Because whenever an Indian team travels abroad, the fans expect the team to do really well and win the series. I certainly believe that we had the ability to do that.

In 2001-02, the famous Australia series [in India], that was the first time that suddenly things changed. That irrespective of what the situation is, we can certainly win from any situation. And then the Headingley Test match in 2002, that again changed the way we sort of thought about exploring Test matches and similarly the Perth Test match

I think you need to have clarity of thought when you are encountered with such situations and I had extreme clarity that no matter what, if I win the toss I’m going to bat first because that’s the best way of winning the Test match. The only thought to me was how can I win this Test match, what’s the best way of putting pressure? In fact, when I went out to toss, just a few minutes before… there are a lot of former cricketers as commentators hanging around near the pitch, and some of them said it’s a field-first pitch. So I said, “okay, that’s your way of thinking, but I’m going to bat first no matter what”. So we batted first. Rahul [Dravid] batted really well and Irfan [Pathan] had a great game in that in that Test match. RP Singh bowled brilliantly. And then Viru [Virender Sehwag] got those couple of breakthroughs in the second innings. So beating Australia in Perth, I think, changed the entire way that we sort of looked at… In 2001-02, the famous Australia series [in India], that was the first time that suddenly things changed. That irrespective of what the situation is, we can certainly win from any situation. And then the Headingley Test match in 2002, that again changed the way we sort of thought about exploring Test matches and similarly the Perth Test match. Irrespective of what the sort of lead up to that Test was, outside of the game itself I think this team just came together. We were really strong as a unit and it showed on the field as well.Anil Kumble acknowledges the cheers after picking up his 600th Test wicket, in Perth in January 2008•Getty ImagesReturning after shoulder surgery, away recordI think, you know, I always had the belief that I can go out there and do well. You know, although people sort of have have their own views about what you can do, what you can’t do. People believe that I needed doctored pitches in India to perform, and I won’t perform outside of India. It’s not easy performing on any surface. Whether in India or outside, it takes time for you to mature, for you to understand the conditions and then make subtle changes in your game to up your skill to be able to perform there. So even I had those challenges and I had to make sure that I would be able to adapt to those kind of situations. So yeah, I mean there were a few situations like the shoulder surgery which I guess it was like you just have to go through it as a professional cricketer. It was tough being out of the game for almost a year, it took me almost three months to lift my hand up, and those were testing times when you start thinking whether you can come back and play, whether you can bowl the way you were bowling before. So all those negative thoughts keep coming and that’s where the family and the friends that you have close to you certainly help. Their support really is important. So for me it was that kind of a situation.Monkey off the backAnd then when I went to Australia [2003], where I didn’t play the first Test [in Brisbane], and then I barely made it to the second Test match in Adelaide. End of day one, Australia were 400 for four [400 for 5] or something like that, and I had one for 100 [1 for 115] or something. It was a very flat deck, and when I came back [from the ground] that evening I realised, “look it doesn’t really matter, I know there’s been a lot of talk about this, perhaps could be my last chance, If I can perform then I’ll continue to play”. So I just took the pressure off me saying, “look it doesn’t matter if this could be my last game, but let me go out there and enjoy, and bowl differently, and set different fields”.

“It was tough being out of the game for almost a year, it took me almost three months to lift my hand up, and those were testing times when you start thinking whether you can come back and play, whether you can bowl the way you were bowling before.”Anil Kumble

You know the googly was getting bounce, and the batsmen were not picking that well. So when I went into the second day, I knew that they would be going for runs, and if I can pick up a couple of wickets then the pressure will be back on the batting side. So I set fields like how you set for an off-spinner. I had a short midwicket, a square leg, a short leg, and then even sometimes a backward short leg, and then bowled a lot of googlies, and picked up a fifer [5 for 154] in that first innings. On surviving the Tsunami in 2004We were staying at Fisherman’s Cove [in Chennai]. It was my wife and I and our son – just the three of us. My son was about eight-nine-ten months old and we traveled by air. We didn’t want to drive down because it would take six hours and we didn’t want my son to travel that long. We enjoyed a holiday and the day the tsunami happened, we were leaving, so I was to check out early because we had, I think, a 11.30 flight.Somehow, you know my wife, kept waking up that night very uneasy. She kept waking me up saying, “look, what’s the time?” “I’m not feeling well I’m feeling a bit uneasy.” So we woke up early, we had a coffee looking at the sea. Everything was calm, it was cloudy.[…] we went to the breakfast area and as you’re aware, the breakfast area is slightly at an elevation. And we were having breakfast probably when the first wave hit. I was not even aware that this had happened. As we were checking out I saw a young couple in their bathrobes, you know literally drenched, and they were shivering.I couldn’t make out what it was. We just walked out and sat in the car. […] After Fisherman’s Cove there’s a bridge, and I could literally touch the water because the level of the water was barely one foot from the bridge and it was frothing. We could see a lot of people, you know how you see in the movies, where people carry whatever they can and walking with pots and pans, kids on their shoulder and whatever bags they could have. Our driver kept getting calls on his phone then we asked him to focus on driving, but he kept saying [in Tamil] that there’s a lot of water everywhere. When I came back to Bangalore and then switched on the television that’s when I realized that a tsunami had happened so we were totally unaware as to what had happened.A couple of years back I met the [hotel] manager [he said] once we passed the bridge, the second wave which came, I believe, submerged the bridge. So we were probably destined and saved just in the nick of time. She [Kumble’s wife] did tell she saw god in her dream. I said okay that’s fine. You can’t really relate to that. But now, yes, you can you can relate to what she said. Maybe, you know, all these things certainly there was a divine blessing on us to make it.

Senior figures at Newcastle think they’ve found perfect off-field addition

Senior officials at Newcastle United are reportedly confident that the club have found the perfect off-field addition this summer, with the decision now in the individual's hands.

Big changes at Newcastle this summer

It looks as though Eddie Howe has done enough to stay on as manager of the Magpies, overcoming a rocky period earlier in the season to eventually come seventh in the Premier League. A sudden change of manager cannot be completely ruled out, should PIF have a big change of heart, but more focus is likely to be on backroom appointments and new signings on the pitch after the boss arrested a mid-season slump.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe.

One of the biggest stories surrounding Newcastle has been the future of director of football Dan Ashworth, who has now been on gardening leave for a number of months, ahead of what looks like a move to Manchester United this season. Work is being done to find a replacement for the highly-rated 53-year-old, with Crystal Palace transfer ace Dougie Freedman emerging as the front-runner to come in.

In terms of signings that could come in before the start of next season, Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is reportedly wanted by Howe, as he eyes a reunion with his former player at Bournemouth. An audacious triple raid of Palace trio Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise has also been mooted, which could be more likely to happen if Freedman arrives at St James' Park.

Newcastle table offer for backroom figure

According to a new report from Football Insider, Newcastle have tabled a deal to Freedman to become their new director of football after Ashworth.

The update claims that senior figures at St James' consider him the "perfect replacement" for the Englishman, in what could be a significant appointment. It is stressed that "Palace remain hopeful of keeping the Scotsman and are making attempts to convince him to stay at the club", however, so there is no guarantee that the Magpies will get their man.

It is clear at this point that Ashworth will be United-bound if an agreement can be reached with all parties, but finding a successor is tough, given his reputation in the game. In Freedman, however, the Magpies could have a fantastic successor, with the Scot also a renowned figure in his field who got Guehi, Eze and Olise for a combined £46m in transfer fees

The trio are now thought to be worth a whopping £170m between them, and Palace owner Steve Parish has also heaped praise on the 49-year-old, saying: "[He’s been] really important. He’s a brilliant guy. He was the second manager I had at the club. He was instrumental in us getting promoted. He’s been instrumental, he saved the club [as a player] when we were about to get relegated from the Championship with a last-minute goal at Stockport. He got us promoted while playing for Wolves."

Freedman could see Newcastle as the natural next step in his career, no doubt enjoying his time at Palace but wanting to join a team who are playing in Europe next season.

The fact that he could also bring some talented Eagles stars with him would be an added bonus, and the importance of nailing his appointment as soon as possible cannot be downplayed, allowing him to get to work on masterminding new additions for Howe.

Alex Davies turns on the style to edge out Derbyshire in thriller

Lancashire keeper produces fine innings to put target out of Derbyshire’s reach

ECB Reporters Network01-Sep-2020Lancashire 178 for 5 (Davies 82) beat Derbyshire 174 for 7 (Madsen 44) by four runsA fine innings of 82 by Alex Davies helped steer Lancashire Lightning to a tense four-run victory over Derbyshire Falcons at Headingley to give the Emirates Old Trafford side their second win in three North Group games and consign the Falcons to their second loss in three.Replying to Lancashire’s 178 for five, the Falcons managed 174 for 7, although a late onslaught by Matt Critchley, who was run out off the penultimate ball of the innings for 32, kept the outcome in doubt until the final delivery of the twentieth over.Having chosen to bat first, Lancashire skipper, Dane Vilas, saw his decision abundantly justified as Keaton Jennings and Davies rattled up 54 runs in the Powerplay with Davies hitting three straight sixes, two of which were struck off consecutive balls from Sam Conners.Leg-spinner Critchley, had Jennings caught at deep midwicket by Anuj Dal for 29 in the seventh over to end the 63-run opening stand. However, Davies powered on, reaching his second fifty in as many T20 innings off 31 balls with three fours off successive deliveries from Alex Hughes. His second-wicket partner, Steven Croft soon picked up the tempo and hit three sixes of his own. The second of these made Croft the first Lancashire batsman to hit a hundred sixes in T20 cricket, although Critchley’s smart work ran out the Lancashire veteran for 38 soon afterwards. This ended his 74-run stand with Davies, those runs having been scored off just 50 balls.Vilas managed only eight before holing out to Luis Reece at long off and in the next over Davies also perished on the boundary, caught by Leus du Plooy off Conners for a 56-ball 82 that included five fours and a quartet of sixes.Barnes, Derbyshire’s loanee from Yorkshire, was his side’s most successful bowler with two for 27 from three overs but Critchley’s one for 30 from four was also valuable and Derbyshire’s ground fielding remained sound under pressure.Derbyshire’s response began poorly when the experiment of opening with Mattie McKiernan ended after two balls when he skied Croft to Vilas at midwicket and departed for only four. The “home” side suffered a more grievous blow three overs later when Godleman was bowled for seven when swinging across the line at Croft.Reece and Wayne Madsen rebuilt their side’s innings carefully but only 39 runs came in the Powerplay and the introduction of Lancashire’s specialist spinners put a further break on the scoring rate. Reece had made 39 when his attempted scoop off Danny Lamb on 39 only feathered a catch to Davies behind the stumps and his departure left the Falcons on 60 for three after nine overs.Although Madsen revived Derbyshire’s spirits with a colossal six off Matt Parkinson, his side were 73 for three at the halfway point of their innings and sorely in need of the six and four Madsen levied off Liam Hurt’s next over, the second boundary being an outrageous ramp shot, concocted as the batsman avoided a bouncer.Madsen paid the price for his invention, however, by suffering a leg injury which compelled him to use a runner for the rest of his innings. This handicap did not stifle the run rate, though. Du Plooy hit successive sixes off Parkinson, only to be caught at long off by Rob Jones for 29 two balls later when trying to repeat the trick. That left Derbyshire needing 57 off six overs and their task was immediately made even tougher when Madsen holed out at long off for 44, Jones again taking the catch to give left-arm spinner Tom Hartley his maiden T20 wicket for Lancashire. Tom Bailey and Lamb then kept their nerve to see their side home.

Sky Sports reporter: Liverpool enter race to beat Man Utd to sign £50m+ ace

Liverpool are looking to beat Manchester United to a summer transfer signing that could cost them more than £50m.

Liverpool transfer rumours

The 2024 summer transfer window is expected to be a crucial one for Liverpool and new manager Arne Slot. The Dutchman will no doubt be keen to put his own stamp on a squad that has been moulded over nine years by Jurgen Klopp.

Slot will have to make some big decisions on the outings front, with Darwin Nunez's future reportedly up in the air. But it is the incomings that will likely prove key to the Reds' success in the forthcoming season as they look to push for the Premier League title once again after faltering late on last term.

Liverpool are hoping to sign PSV Eindhoven winger Johan Bakayoko this summer, who has been valued at £43m by the Dutch Eredivisie champions. The Reds are also thought to be leading the race for Atalanta's Teun Koopmeiners, with Chelsea and Juventus also in the mix for the Dutchman, who has been valued at €60m (£52m) by the recently crowned Europa League champions.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move for Brajan Gruda, who could cost as much as €20m (£17m) to lure away from Mainz 05 this summer, while a few names from Arne Slot's past could find their way to England in the near future. Former Feyenoord captain Orkun Kokcu and current Feyenoord shot-stopper Justin Bijlow have both been tipped to make the move to Anfield.

Liverpool enter race to beat Man Utd to sign £50m+ ace

Now, as per journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Liverpool have joined Real Madrid and Manchester United in the race for Lille centre-back Leny Yoro.

It has previously been reported that the youngster will depart Lille this summer despite their qualification for European football, and could cost anywhere between £50-85m, even though the stopper is about to enter the final 12 months of his current contract.

Man Utd transfer target Leny Yoro in Ligue 1 action for Lille.

Despite only being 18 years of age, Yoro has already racked up 60 appearances for Lille's senior side, including 44 in 2023/24. His ability to shine at a top level at such a young age has earned the Frenchman comparisons to the likes of William Saliba.

"At Marseille, I knew Boubacar Kamara, at Saint-Etienne, William Saliba and Wesley Fofana, and now there's Leny Yoro," said Lille teammate Remy Cabella. "He has all the qualities and potential to do something huge. He's very humble, and that's another of his strengths."

Moreover, manager Paulo Fonseca has also praised the defender, with his comments suggesting that he has a mentality that belies his tender years.

He said: "To me, the players don’t have age, they have quality. Because here we don’t have the possibility to buy very expensive players, we find a way to make the young players grow.

"I believe Leny [Yoro] in the next year will be at one of the best clubs in Europe. He started here at 16 with us. He is very ambitious, but very disciplined. He grew a lot but he is a kid with a big maturity, with big quality.

"I have no doubt in modern football he will be one of the best central defenders in the world."

No outfield player featured for more minutes than Yoro in last season's Ligue 1 campaign, highlighting the trust that the manager has in his player. Therefore, perhaps this is why the price tag is so high despite Yoro's contract situation.

However, even after going down by two goals, the hosts looked more threatening and within seven minutes they pulled one back, thanks to a strike from Pepe. They kept piling the pressure on United's brittle defence and were rewarded for their perseverance as Samu Omorodion scored a brace to complete a dramatic comeback. And if was not for Harry Maguire's late heroics then Ten Hag would have had to leave Portugal with his job hanging by a thread.

According to it was the 31st time that United conceded more than two goals in a match since the start of last season- which is the most by any Premier League team. Moreover, since Ten Hag took over in 2022, the Red Devils have conceded three or more goals on 24 occasions – which is also the most by an English top-flight team in all competitions.

WHAT KAREN CARNEY SAID

Former Lionesses star Karen Carney slammed Ten Hag's men at the studio during the half-time break, where she commented: "I messaged someone, they’re like a rich tea biscuit! They crumble. That goal they conceded, the first one, is concentration from Manchester United. They just switch off, they lose control. In the 18-yard box they’re not getting tight, they’re not picking up first and second balls.

"Okay, it comes back to Joao Mario… crosses from outside the box is a massive problem. You know that Samu Omorodion is massive. I’m highlighting [Matthijs] De Ligt here, he’s on the six-yard line, at no point to they squeeze. There’s so many things wrong with that clip."

Incumbent Linda Zondi not on shortlist to be South Africa's convener of selectors

Among the new convener’s most pressing early task will be to appoint a new men’s Test captain

Firdose Moonda14-Sep-2020Linda Zondi will not be considered for South Africa’s convener of selectors position, after failing to be shortlisted for the post despite being the incumbent. ESPNcricinfo understands that Victor Mpitsang, Hussein Manack and Patrick Moroney were interviewed last week with Mpitsang the frontrunner to get the job.The post, which has been vacant since Zondi’s contract ended after the 2019 World Cup, has been significantly revamped and is now a full-time role. The convener will no longer only select the men’s national team but will also be responsible for selecting the women’s side, the A team, the under-19 team and will oversee the scouting and selection program in consultation with the director of cricket (DOC) Graeme Smith. Earlier this month, Smith spoke about the importance of the position.”The convenor of selectors is a key person in CSA. It’s a job that comes with a lot of pressure from all fronts,” he said. “The role definition is slightly changed. We’ve shifted it to not only being a national team convener but to controlling the whole pipeline, which speaks to our high-performance strategy. We feel it’s important to create the avenues of communication — the way we play, the way we select, the way we think, the way we operate, the type of people we want involved in that environment is key. We’ve aligned the convenor of selectors right through the pipeline. He’ll be overseeing everything. The convenor now is a much more extensive job. The convenor of selectors working on the whole system and owning the whole system, and being part of all the processes, is key.”For that reason, an extensive list of criteria was laid out for applicants to the post including a minimum of five years experience as a selector and a qualification in sports management. Zondi, who has been a selector for 13 years and holds a diploma in sports management, was told he did not meet the requirements to be shortlisted.”The process to appoint the new convener is currently under way and once it is complete we will announce the successful candidate and other relevant information,” a CSA statement said.It is also unclear when the new convener will be unveiled but ESPNcricinfo expects it imminently. Mpitsang, who is understood to be the preferred choice, convened the selection panel for the under-19 team that participated in this year’s World Cup and placed eighth. He has also worked as a commentator for pay-television channel . He is also the only black African candidate on the shortlist and although CSA’s affirmative action policy does not extend to full-time employees (only consultants), having Mpitsang on the staff is likely to be met with approval from CSA’s transformation policy.Still, Mpitsang does have competition. Manack and Moroney both impressed the interview panel. Manack served as a selector under Zondi and also applied for the DOC position but lost out to Smith. Moroney was being considered under the former CEO Thabang Moroe’s regime and convened the selection panel for the Jozi Stars, the team that won the inaugural Mzansi Super League (MSL).In contrast, Zondi, who will no longer be involved, has a history of selection that stretches back almost two decades. He worked within the structures at the Kwa-Zulu Natal province and Dolphins franchise, as a national women’s selector between 2007 and 2009, as national men’s team selector between 2013 to 2015, during which time he also selected the under-19 squad that won the 2014 World Cup, and as convener of selectors between 2015 and 2019. During that time, Zondi’s picks including the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Lungi Ngidi and Rassie van der Dussen have thrived and he was also involved with Quinton de Kock’s elevation to white-ball captain. He was then reappointed as an “independent selector,” when the national men’s team management was overhauled last December, on a short-term contract which ended in April.Among the new convener’s most pressing early task will be to appoint a new men’s Test captain, even though there is no indication of when the national team will be in action again.
