Pep planning big push to sign £82,000-a-week "special" star for Man City

Pep Guardiola is ready to push through a mega-money move this summer as he looks to recharge his Manchester City side after a failed defence of their treble this time around, it is being claimed.

Two trophies still possible for Man City

After sweeping all before them last season, City have looked a shadow of their former selves this season despite still being in the hunt for a Premier League and FA Cup double.

Their hopes of winning the Champions League in back-to-back seasons ended with a penalty shoot-out defeat to Real Madrid, and the summer signings made have not really had the desired impact yet, with Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes, in particular, flattering to deceive.

There is also plenty of speculation around the future of some of the attacking stars of Manchester City's current side. Kevin De Bruyne has been subject to interest from Saudi Arabia and will be entering the final 12 months of his contract this summer, possibly leaving this as the last chance for City to cash in on the Belgian.

Meanwhile, Bernardo Silva has long longed for a move to Barcelona, and has a £50m release clause in his contract to allow him to do so this summer if the Catalan giants stump up the cash, meaning that City may be without two of their creative geniuses come the new season. As a result, they are already eyeing up a future world-beater.

Pep pushing for Musiala

The player in question is none other than Bayern Munich golden boy Jamal Musiala, whose future seems uncertain in Bavaria this summer.

That is according to The Guardian, who claim that Bayern may opt to cash in on the youngster this summer should he not agree a new deal, with his current contract set to run out in 2026.

It is added that they will command a "huge fee" for the German, but with City having regularly shelled out large amounts for star talent that is unlikely to be an issue.

Indeed, it is added that Guardiola's side are "at the front of the queue" thanks to their "advanced" interest, with former club Chelsea also monitoring the situation.

City are planning a "big push" for his services with Musiala having won over the City boss and is now emerging as Guardiola's top target this summer. He could certainly prove a coup were he to become available.

Man City now chasing to sign "monster" who they think can replace Walker

The Cityzens are one of a number of clubs interested in the talented full-back ahead of the summer.

ByDan Emery Apr 11, 2024

TNT Sports pair Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves have both showered Musiala in praise this year already.

“I think the highest compliment I can give him is that I don’t know where his ceiling is", Ferdinand explained. “This guy has the potential to win the Ballon d’Or. I’ve said it before, he has the potential to do that if the path goes the right way for him and he’s in a successful team. That’s the platform and foundation for that.”

Meanwhile, Hargreaves added: “He rarely ever loses the ball, which is crazy. Normally technical players further up the pitch turn over the ball a lot, but Jamal just has a feel for it. He’s a super special player.”

Should he move, Musiala would likely see a significant hike on the current £82,000 per week that he takes home as part of his Bayern Munich contract, with City likely to be able to offer far more lucrative terms to bring him to the Premier League.

He could well prove the perfect heir for De Bruyne, and City fans will already be excited about the idea of Musiala linking up with Phil Foden behind Erling Haaland next season should a deal get over the line.

Bilal Asif, Faheem Ashraf back in Pakistan Test squad

Usman Shinwari and Kashif Bhatti left out for Test series opener against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi

Umar Farooq01-Feb-2020Pakistan have recalled offspinner Bilal Asif into their Test squad, in a bid to counter what is expected to be a left-hander heavy Bangladesh line-up, for the first game in Rawalpindi. Seam-bowling allrounder Faheem Ashraf also returned to the squad after having been ignored for the team’s most recent Test series at home against Sri Lanka.Pakistan Test squad

Azhar Ali (capt), Abid Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Asad Shafiq, Haris Sohail, Fawad Alam, Mohammad Rizwan (wk), Yasir Shah, Imran Khan, Mohammad Abbas, Shaheen Afridi, Bilal Asif, Naseem Shah, Faheem Ashraf

Both Asif and Ashraf weren’t part of the Test squad that toured Australia in 2019, but have now made comebacks in place of left-arm fingerspinner Kashif Bhatti and left-arm quick Usman Shinwari. Asif was the second-highest wicket-taker in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy, with 43 strikes in nine games, in Central Punjab’s run to the title. Meanwhile, Ashraf, his Central Punjab team-mate, had taken eight wickets in three games in addition to making 118 runs at an average of 59 and strike rate of 90.07. Six of those wickets came in the final after he had missed six successive matches because of a groin injury.ALSO READ: Who is Bilal Asif?An offspinner, who can turn the ball sharply and generate extra bounce, Asif has played five Tests so far, collecting 16 wickets, including a six-wicket haul on debut against Australia in Dubai in 2018. Ashraf last played a Test in January 2019 in Johannesburg.”The Test team is in good shape after winning the last Test against Sri Lanka,” coach-cum-selector Misbah-ul-Haq said. “But now we have a different opponent, we haven’t made a lot of changes and have made only two changes. We went with four fast bowlers in the last Test in Pindi (Rawalpindi) and that’s why we have included an allrounder (Ashraf) if we get the same conditions.”Bilal Asif has been brought in because of left-handers and it gives us a different option if we need it. In the last series against Sri Lanka, if we consider the wicketkeeper as a batsman, we needed a bowler at No. 7 who can bat. Faheem took five wickets in the final and gives you cushion to score runs too, but we consider him as a bowler. We will try to play with an experienced team in the Test matches; we have a settled batting line-up but have also have back-ups.”The first Test will take place in Rawalpindi from February 7 to 11, and Bangladesh will then return to the country in April to play a solitary ODI and the second Test, both in Karachi. The Pakistan Super League, also to be played in Pakistan in its entirety, will be played between the second and third legs of Bangladesh’s tour. The first leg included a three-match T20I series, in January, which Pakistan won 2-0, after the third match was washed out. Both Tests will be part of the ICC Test Championship, where Pakistan are currently placed fourth, with 80 points from four games.Misbah rued the lengthy gap between the two Tests and said that it could disrupt the “rhythm” of the players.”It’s very difficult not only for me but for the players too,” Misbah said. “If the player has scored a century in his last Test and then plays after a gap, it’s too difficult. When you play back-to-back Test series it gives you rhythm. It’s a very tricky situation for the team when you play with a gap of two-three months.”

Tottenham Hotspur kicked off their pre-season campaign with a commanding 5-1 victory over Hearts in Edinburgh. The match saw a dominant second half, with four goals scored after Brennan Johnson opened the scoring in the first half. Will Lankshear, Moore, Djed Spence, and Ashley Phillips all contributed to the impressive win.

Following this, Spurs secured a 2-0 win against Championship side Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road, with Yves Bissouma and Dane Scarlett finding the net.

Continuing their summer tour during the Coupang Play Series 2024 in South Korea, Tottenham faced J1 League champions Vissel Kobe, where they triumphed 3-2. Moore once again made his mark by scoring the decisive goal in the 88th minute, adding to earlier strikes from Pedro Porro and Heung-min Son. Spurs beat K-League XI and then wrapped up the Korean leg of their pre-season tour with a defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich. Harry Kane missed the game due to an injury.

Trippier has been Newcastle United's first-choice right-back since his move back to the Premier League from Atletico Madrid in January 2022. However, the England international is not in Eddie Howe's plans for the upcoming season, with Tino Livramento likely to be the starter for the Magpies.

The Athletic report that Trippier is keen to exit the Magpies this summer and has been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League. However, the report has suggested that Everton are ready to sign the 33-year-old full-back on loan this summer with the transfer deadline fast approaching. The Toffees have already held initial talks about the move with Newcastle.

Everton are looking to strengthen their full-back department this summer and Toffees' boss Sean Dyche is said to be a fan of Trippier. The two worked together between 2012 and 2015 at Burnley before the full-back left the club for Tottenham Hotspur.

James Vince stars with 61 off 24 as Multan Sultans make the PSL play-offs

A rain-shortened game turned into a no-contest very quickly as the England batsman took control

The Report by Danyal Rasool08-Mar-2020Nine overs a side game The rain deprived Islamabad United of any points against Peshawar Zalmi on Saturday, and they will now hope it had continued long enough to ensure today’s match against Multan Sultans was rendered impossible. For once it got going, Multan delivered a lesson in ruthless efficiency, teaching Islamabad how to fly out of the blocks and develop an unassailable lead. A target of 92 might have been tricky in nine overs, but not when James Vince is in full flow it’s not. An onslaught that was frightening in its brutality and exquisite in its execution steamrolled Islamabad, taking just 24 balls for an unbeaten 61. It killed off the contest, with Multan cruising to the chase in fewer than 6.3 overs.Islamabad were sitting fairly pretty in the opening stages of the match, having brought up their own fifty in just 3.3 overs. Their prospects looked bright when Colin Munro whipped Shahid Afridi for three sixes off his first three balls. But the wheels would come off after that for Shadab Khan’s side with wickets starting to fall with alarming frequency. Most batsmen found more height than distance on their shots, a number holing out in the deep, and in no time, a scorecard that read 57 for 1 had slumped to 91 for 7. Since the Munro offensive, only 41 runs came off the last 33 balls, and in a nine-over game, that was too much of a slowdown.Vince vs Akif JavedVersus implies this might have been a contest; it was, instead a blowout. For Vince, who delights and frustrates in equal measure, the former because of the elegance of his strokeplay and the latter for its ephemeral nature, found a shortend game suited his strengths wonderfully. He had displayed his timing was on point with a glorious drive through backward point off Dale Steyn, and Akif had plenty of reasons to be wary. The first ball was heaved into the onside for four and the next a slightly fortuitous edge to third man, and things would only get better. When Akif pitched one up full, Vince leant into one of those glorious drives most responsible for putting food on his table, before a straight drive made it four in a row. There was further ignominy for the hapless Javed when he was bludgeoned through extra cover for five in a row, and the only saving grace was Vince wouldn’t be able to make it six. That still meant eight fours had been scored off the first 11 balls of the innings. It was more a procession than a run-chase from that point onwards.Imran TahirNo matter how you stack the deck against bowlers and how hostile you make the conditions, Imran Tahir always seems to find a way to excel. Coming in for the fifth over – just after Afridi had been spanked for 20 in his – Tahir wasn’t fazed, taking just three balls to remove the dangerous Munro, his over costing Multan just seven. He was just as effective the second time around, this time snaring the in-form Shadab. He had a chance to make that spell an even more glittering one, but his weakest suit – his fielding – let him down as he failed to cling on to a skier by Asif Ali. Even so, 2 for 17 in his two-over spell was the perfect antidote to Munro’s destructiveness, and ensured that Multan wrestled back the momentum. Vince ensured once they had it in their grasp, they would never let of it.Where the teams standFor the first time in PSL history, a new team has entered the play-offs, with Multan Sultans confirming safe passage through to the last four. Islamabad have just seven points with one game to go, and may need other results to go in their favour if they are to maintain their perfect record of play-off progression.

Spurs chiefs now pushing to keep player Ange has barely used

Whilst Ange Postecoglou and his team prepare Tottenham Hotspur's players to take on Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend, work is going on behind the scenes ahead of the summer transfer window.

The focus of the coaching staff and first-team stars should be on the action on the pitch in their bid to secure Champions League qualification by finishing in the top four ahead of Aston Villa.

However, Daniel Levy and the Spurs chiefs behind the scenes are already laying the groundwork to manage the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

They are now reportedly pushing to ensure that one player – Giovani Lo Celso – remains part of Postecoglou's playing group moving forward.

Tottenham want to keep frustrated star

Earlier this year, it was reported that Lo Celso was pushing for an exit from north London as he was frustrated, and seemingly annoyed, with his current situation at the club given the lack of minutes the manager has provided him with.

Now, in a twist to the story, Spurs want to keep hold of the Argentina international and offer him a new contract, according to Tutto Mercato Web, as relayed by Sport Witness.

The report claims that Tottenham are hoping to extend his current deal, which is due to expire in the summer of 2025, by another two seasons to preserve his future in England.

It states that they are looking to adjust his wages to ensure that Lo Celso is happy and willing to remain with the club beyond the summer window.

Spanish giants Barcelona are said to be admirers of the central midfielder, along with fellow La Liga outfit Real Betis, and Spurs are now attempting to scare away potential suitors by pinning him down to a contract extension.

Why Spurs may want to keep Giovani Lo Celso

The Lilywhites may want to keep hold of the World Cup winner as he has shown glimpses of promise in his limited time on the pitch this season.

Lo Celso has seemingly been frustrated, per the earlier report this year, that Postecoglou has barely used him in the Premier League, and his statistics in the few games he has played suggest that the midfield star has reason to feel aggrieved.

As you can see in the table above, the 28-year-old whiz has provided quality in and out of possession, with four direct goal contributions in 17 appearances despite only starting four times.

His 63% duel success rate also shows that the left-footed maestro has held his own in physical battles to either retain possession or win the ball back for his side, whilst his pass accuracy suggests that the talented ace rarely gives it away.

These attributes make him an attractive player for a team that wants to dominate possession, as he has the quality to provide goals and assists as a box-crashing midfielder whilst being solid off the ball and a reliable passer.

Sri Lanka Cricket ready to host India, Bangladesh in July

With fewer than 500 active cases of Covid-19 in the country, restrictions and curfews have begun easing

Andrew Fidel Fernando18-May-2020International cricket may begin in Sri Lanka as early as July, if Sri Lanka Cricket’s (SLC) plans to go ahead with the forthcoming series against Bangladesh and India work out.As of now, neither the BCCI nor the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have confirmed the tours, which will have to involve substantial logistical challenges, including having player quarantine measures in place, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, within Sri Lanka itself, curfews have begun easing, and the SLC believes their mid-year series are viable. There are fewer than 500 active cases of Covid-19 in the island – that number having remained steady for roughly two weeks.”We have made inquiries from both the India and Bangladesh boards and are awaiting a response from them,” SLC CEO Ashley de Silva told ESPNcricinfo. “As of now, those series haven’t been postponed.”It seems likely that beyond approval from the boards themselves, Sri Lanka’s government will have to get involved in lifting travel restrictions and providing bio-secure environments for the players, if the series are to go ahead. There are also serious travel restrictions to negotiate within India and Bangladesh as well. BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has said that until the Indian government gives teams permission to travel, the board cannot do much.BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury, meanwhile, told ESPNcricinfo, “We have to look at traveling restrictions in Bangladesh, and the quarantine protocols in both countries. We are in discussion [with the SLC], so all the factors will come into play. We have to be mindful of the players’ readiness, too, but that’s going to happen. The players will get back to training, but we have to figure out other details about this tour.”India were due to visit Sri Lanka in late June for three ODIs and three T20Is, followed by Bangladesh who were scheduled to play three Tests which are part of the World Test Championship.Sri Lanka has already postponed two home tours – a two-Test series against England, which may now take place in January next year, according to de Silva, as well as limited-overs series against South Africa.

Fabrizio Romano: £50 million ace now set to leave Chelsea with Thiago Silva

Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has shared a fresh update out of Stamford Bridge, with another player expected to leave Chelsea this summer.

Chelsea tipped for fire-sale to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules

Blues transfer chiefs, spearheaded by chairman Todd Boehly, have invested heavily in the Chelsea squad over the last two years.

The Blues are working despite their PSR limitations.

ByEmilio Galantini May 7, 2024

Their total outlay exceeds £1 billion since Clearlake Capital and BlueCo's takeover of the west London club in 2022, with Mauricio Pochettino backed to the tune of over £400m just last summer.

This has led to some concerns over Chelsea's ability to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules set out by the Premier League, which only allow clubs to make a loss no greater than £105 million across a rolling three-year period.

Moises Caicedo

£115 million

Enzo Fernandez

£107 million

Mykhalo Mudryk

£88 million

Wesley Fofana

£72 million

Marc Cucurella

Chelsea are currently far above this limit, and respected journalists like The Telegraph's Matt Law have claimed that Chelsea could have to raise £100m through a fire-sale of players before the financial deadline on June 30 – or risk sanctions akin to those of Everton, Nottingham Forest and Leicester City.

There are many who could be offloaded in a bid to balance the books, with Chelsea considering selling both Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah as two options. Winger Raheem Sterling has also been linked with a Chelsea exit in this regard, but there are many others currently out on loan who don't appear to have a future there.

"We also thought that before June 30th 2024, they're going to have to make sales as well," said Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth last month.

"So you would think decisions, particularly on some of their homegrown players and their academy players, will have to be made before June 30th. So keep an eye on the likes of Conor Gallagher, keep an eye on the likes of Trevoh Chalobah as well, because selling those players would represent pure profit for Chelsea, which is probably what they need going into the next financial year from July 1st onwards."

Indeed, Romelu Lukaku is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, while the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Ian Maatsen and others may well be entering their final summer at Chelsea. One exit has already been confirmed, though, with Chelsea waving goodbye to Thiago Silva and saving some cash on his £110,000-per-week wages.

Fabrizio Romano says Broja is "planning" summer Chelsea exit

Now, Romano has an update on striker Armando Broja, who looks set to follow Silva out the door on a permanent basis.

Armando Broja celebrating a goal for Chelsea.

Chelsea's latest valuation of the Albania international is recorded as £50 million, but they let him join Fulham on loan in January for more game time, where he hasn't exactly pulled up trees.

Taking to X, Romano claims Broja is planning to leave Chelsea for good this summer and many clubs across Europe are interested.

The 22-year-old's potential and past form, with an excellent spell at Southampton coming to mind, highlight his true quality – but it remains to be seen just how much suitors would be willing to fork out.

Broja lands at EvertonLoan with option to buyToffees in relegation scrapWHAT HAPPENED?

Broja will spend the duration of the 2024-25 campaign with Everton, who have an option to make the transfer permanent next summer. That potential fee, if they choose to trigger it, is reported to be around £30 million ($39.4m).

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Broja was involved for Chelsea during pre-season but was ultimately part of a group of players not part of the picture under new manager Enzo Maresca. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Fulham, failing to score in eight appearances, and has netted only three times in 38 Chelsea outings. Soon to turn 23, his best returns have been at Southampton (nine goals in 38 games in 2021-22) and Vitesse Arnhem (11 goals in 34 games in 2020-21). If Chelsea do sell him permanently next summer, it will help the club financially due to his homegrown roots, meaning the fee can be registered as 'pure profit' for PSR reasons.

AFPWHAT EVERTON SAID

Kevin Thelwell, director of football at Everton said: "Having monitored Armando's journey for a number of years, we're very pleased to have been able to bring him to the club. Armando is still a young player who has already built up some impressive experience but someone we also feel has lots more potential to be unlocked. First and foremost, we will work with him to get him fit as soon as possible. Then, his addition will strengthen our options in the attacking department."

When quizzed about Sterling's fitness, Arteta revealed: "Yes, we’ll have to see and speak to him on what he’s been doing and how he’s feeling about it.
